I lost it over this line from Gulf Coast Highway: "And when she dies she says she’ll catch some blackbird’s wing, and she will fly away to heaven" -- Fly away, Nanci, on that blackbird's wing. Rest in peace, sweet soul.
I love this song so much too. So much, in fact, that I told my daughter that I want it played at my funeral/memorial service - - - hopefully a long time from now, but not to forget!
How sad this is to find this video and learn of Nanci's death. She was a national treasure and a beautiful singer and songwriter and a beautiful soul. She provided inspiration to so many. May she rest in peace.
Funnily enough, we in Ireland adopted her as our national treasure too. She’s so whimsically humorous and profound in her depiction of sadness that she was “Irish in spirit”. 🥰😢
How true, yes , in Ireland we loved, and will always, love Nanci Griffith. We'll miss her sorely, for a long time. I saw her on 2 occasions in Kilkenny, with the Kennedys, Maura and Pete, and Pat McInerney. Golden nights!🇮🇪☘️😭
a genuine national treasure. A dear and precious person and breathtaking talent. Went into my record, cd, and digital file collections and confirmed what I suspected I would find. I have more of her music than any other single artist or group of artists. Nobody touched me like Nanci. I will miss her, and am so glad I collected so much of her music.
A sad time. I can’t tell you how many miles her voice has accompanied me down the road. By all accounts a really nice person and a wonderful singer. Rest in peace Nanci.
I love that Nanci chose this beautiful song by John Prine, which she duetted with him on her album 'Other Voices, Other Rooms'. Jerry Jeff, Nanci & Townes have all left our earthly plane, leaving behind a compendium of songs that will always stand the test of time. ~Rest them all on a higher mountain, where their voices are carried on the wind. ♡♡♡
Two of the very most opposite artists on the planet - Nanci and J.Prine. Nanci was always such a Texas sweetheart! Touched by the moment and the long view, simultaneously, Ms. Griffith's magic rushes out of a mysterious connection with the common man. A fine & tender voice& writer, lost to us now.
Every time I think about Jerry Jeff Walker, it reminds me of 1976 when he, Hoyt Axton and Vassar Clements did a concert at Colorado State University just a week before I graduated. My girlfriend that lived with me and I worked the logistics of that concert as student employees of CSU. I worked the coat room, which in late May, was just holding all the alcohol people got caught with. Needless to say, I got really hammered. My girlfriend worked the stage…. got tangled up with the bass player for Hoyt Axton. Long story shorter… by the time I sobered up enough to go back home, my girlfriend left me a note that she was going in the road with Hoyt Axton band, and she TOOK OUR CAT!! with her. Obviously broke my heart because she and my cat were my most precious things to my heart. But… I graduated a few days later, put all my worldly possessions in a 5x12 storage shed, and went hitch hiking for the summer. Forty years later, just west of Saratoga Wyoming, I happened to see an old bus parked in a farm meadow with “Hoyt Axton Band” in the destination sign above the cab. I stopped… rolled a joint and sat in front of that bus and just let all the fond memories flood back into my soul. What a great memory…. Life is grand. Just embrace it all, good and bad… and it’s still grand.
Like sitting on a bridge with legs dangling over the side... Watching and knowing water(life) is going by and not much can be done to stop it, just ride, JUST RIDE 🥴
I have tried and tried to listen to Nanci's music without getting emotional but I have to admit I can't. I've been a huge fan since around 1989,saw her numerous times in concert and I am still trying to get my head around her passing. She will be forever in our hearts. Sweet Nanci rest in peace.
Nancy Griffith ,Townes Van Zandt ,Jerry Jeff Walker ,have left this world fortunately, they left us their music still breaks my heart when I heard that Nancy passed away she is a sweet Austin girl.Townes holds a special place in my heart one of the best damn songwriters . Jerry Jeff always had a good time listening to his music. All will be missed
Nanci Griffith is a national treasure.I can’t believe she is gone. 😢 i will always love her. This show is a rare find. To whomever uploaded it to UA-cam, thank you for sharing. I’ve loved Nanci Griffith and her music since I first heard her in Austin in the 70s. It was a time when you could hear some of the most talented people for $3 at a hole in the wall bar (there was also a venue with that name in the 70s.) Lucinda Williams, Jerry Jeff Walker, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, Lyle Lovett were her peers. I also saw her at a theatre in NYC around the time of the release of “Other Voices, Other Rooms” for which she won a Grammy in 1994. Also, she had just been entered into the Texas Songwriters Hall of Fame earlier this summer. I will miss you so much, dear Nanci, And I will always love you and remember you. You are with the angels now. I just wish they hadn’t come so soon for you. 🙏💖🙏 I hope you are with John Prine, Townes, Jerry Jeff, Tom Petty, George Harrison and Roy Orbison, ❤️🎸💚🎸💜🎹 💛
The World was better with Nancy Griffith singing ,,,, she lives in hearts and memories of the Purity of the Song and Heart of the words. Things that bring us together.. Tears well shed ... For loss of something special always comes with a cost.... We have her gifts she left for us...Life is a Journey not a destination
Nanci, the poet, the songwriter, the guitarist, and oh, such a lovely voice! Ping. Going up! Love at the five and dime. Love you, Nanci, for all time. May you now gently sing to the angels whom you now join.
I know Nanci had some cancer diagnosis some years back but thought she was regaining her health in recent years. So sad beyond belief that she has passed away. Although 68, (not really that old nowadays), she seemed much younger. Just her whole personality, she always came across as a young at heart performer. Nanci, may the angels surround you now and may your voice be heard in the heavens.
I saw Nanci first at the Cactus Cafe, a little bar on UT campus in the mid 80s. Fell in love with her and her music instantly. I thought it was so cool to be in a place where the artist sang and played, then went to the bar during the break and talked to folks like she was just part of the crowd. A regular gal…but so much more. An incredible song writer, a gracious performer who did plenty of benefits. I saw her again in Albuquerque at the Zoo for a fundraiser. A talent like that! Doing a fundraiser for the zoo? That’s Nanci! This summer I found myself missing her music more than usual and hit her site hoping to find a concert schedule only to learn she had retired from performance. So I listened almost solely to her earlier stuff on the road and during my solo time at camp all summer long. Now I know why. Preparation for your blackbird’s flight. My heart will never be the same. So thankful we have UA-cam and records so we can still see your face and hear your Angel voice. Your commercial success did not reflect the impact your music had and will continue to have on our hearts, our memories, and our lives. Thank you Nanci.
This is an especially tragic concert video. All of its featured artists are either dead or no longer able to perform. How apt that the show at which it was recorded is no longer exists either. Fortunately, Mark O'Connor is still here and fiddling away. Be kind to one another; we only have one another. We will always treasure the gifts you gave us. Thank you, Townes, Jerry Jeff, Frank and Nancy.
To the person or people who uploaded this tract God bless you for that. I do not know how that stage held so much talent. Now Nancy Griffith, Townes Van Zandt, and Jerry Jeff Walker are gone. I am not sure about the other two because I do not know them. Oh, and what a wonderful thing it was that Nancy’s first song was a John Prine song. Townes loved John Prine‘s work. It was their love for John Prine that first brought Blaze Foley and Townes together. And what a beautiful introduction she gave to Townes.
I first heard and saw Nanci at the Kennedy Center three decades ago. She and her group were openers for a Willy Nelson concert. She was the real star, shining bright and pure. I never met her face to face but my soul loved her. In some ways, she was appreciated more in Europe and the Uk than here in the US. The Irish really loved her, as did I.
The only one of the five left now is Janis Ian. That line in the Jerry Jeff Walker song he sang on this video is poignant... "I see the light of our own time get dimmer every day.", man... ain't that the truth.
A treasure, a gift, an inspiration but such a giving soul who may not ever realized what a talented artist she was and genuine humane being. She knew life was more than hard...she knew early that it not ever easy!!
Jerry Jeff sings my favorite kind of blues, his words are real from his heart, to soothing ours. Words like "Sometime music is all weve got". Missing you-Jerry Jeff Walker (born Ronald Clyde Crosby; March 16, 1942 - October 23, 2020) was an American country music and folk singer-songwriter. He was a leading figure in the progressive country and outlaw country music movement. He was best known for having written the 1968 song "Mr. Wikipedia
Just watched he tribute to Townes with Nanci, Willie, EmmyLou, Guy, Steve, Rodney, Lylle and other greats. Still processing this great loss. RIP lovely songbird. Catch a blackbirds wing sweet one.
Saw her at Holidays in Houston as a kid, grew up with her on her Mike night. Saw her at Anderson Fair, The Paramount. On black birds wings Ma'am. I Grew up with you from 8 track to cassette too radio and now video. Being from Houston, my heart goes out to her family and friends. Never forget love at the five and dime. My greatest love of my life had everything to do with her songs. Sincerely with much love and sadness. Bren
My Gosh, I fell in love with this woman the first rime I saw her perform in 1986 I have not come to terms with her passing yet Thankfully,we still have her music Thanks Nancy !
That song by Janis Ian "This Old Town" (sung with the great Nanci Griffith) is one of the finest songs she's ever written. I wish they done an LP together. Nanci you are missed
Wow, this Frank Christain guy is pretty great. So's everyone else here, but he was unknown to me before this. Nanci, you were gracious and lovely. Townes, your gift came from some mysterious force of the universe. I am glad to have been alive when you were, so I could discover your wondrous music!
Her version of Prine's Speed of the Sound of Loneliness is simply hypnotic. The swaying beat that feels like a Hawaiian luau transported to Texas, the way the chords waft gently in and out of your mind, the honey-sweet sound of her incomparable voice... just dumbfounding. What a loss.

I recently wrote a sad song about a young Nephew that was killed in an accident. In the song the line is I hold back the tears! Well such a great fan of Nanci and I really can't hold back the tears at her passing. She ranks with the best and will be missed. Much too young.
If there's an Angel of music , Nanci Griffith should be a nominee! Will miss her - along with so many others! The world is poorer for her loss, but Heaven gained an Angel!
I was in the hospital fighting breast cancer and severe Covid-19 when She, John prone and Joe Duffy, all died. I was sickened by these loses when I found out!
What a wonderful concert! Thanks so much for sharing it. Nanci has been one of my favorite singers for years, and I was so sad to hear of her passing. Rest in peace, dear Nanci.

Sooo Sad But Blesss Nanci and Her Family and Friends - just know she is with the Lord Jesus,No consolation for us though! Was a folk fan first in my early youth, however loved all American music too….so much intermeshing of course as it is part of all our human histories…wow lit will all live for ever,Thanks to All who Noted,Preserved,Photographed,Filmed,Passed Down,et al….Many Blessings and Love(from England,in 2021.)
So much beauty these artists have given us, only Janis left now. Remembering the John Hall for Congress benefit I helped out with (recommended the Bardovan). Wow, I actually had Nanci and Pete Seeger in my car that night...
Part of my heart is gone! I will miss her unrecorded songs that surely would speak to me and all of her fans! Thank you Nancy for being the song bird and showing us all what you loved. We were the lucky ones! I found out about her passing looking to see if I could take my family to see her sing in concert, looking for tickets on Friday 10.8.21.
Nancy memories....at EmmaJoes in Austin.....hanging with Paul Watkins ( of the"flow people") at a going away party; standing in the beer line at Kerrville. She was a one of my favorites of the many voices flowing out of Austin back then.
I lost it over this line from Gulf Coast Highway: "And when she dies she says she’ll catch some blackbird’s wing, and she will fly away to heaven" -- Fly away, Nanci, on that blackbird's wing. Rest in peace, sweet soul.
How incredibly sad and beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
I love that song. It makes me cry, too.
Love love this piece on American music shop , love NANCI Griffith. R. I. P. Sweet 😇
Nanci and Townes, together again.
I love this song so much too. So much, in fact, that I told my daughter that I want it played at my funeral/memorial service - - - hopefully a long time from now, but not to forget!

I have tears in my eyes... Thank you for your gifts to us...
Sadness compounded with this particular song as the songwriter was John Prine.
Nanci spoke to my heart & soul. Her collaborations with Prine, Townes, Earle, Lovette, etc enriched all our lives. Thank you Nanci, & Godspeed
Damn it all. Still grieving Jerry Jeff.
We will miss this sweet song bird; her Kimball will sing on in heaven.
Funnily enough, we in Ireland adopted her as our national treasure too. She’s so whimsically humorous and profound in her depiction of sadness that she was “Irish in spirit”. 🥰😢
Griffiths originated from Wales too.
@@CC58 I know this. All my Irish musicians friends LOVED her.

Very sorry to hear that Nanci Griffith has passed away. I'm sure Mr. Van Zandt has saved that bar stool for her.
Next to John Prine's stool too.
And sadly now Jerry Jeff too 🥲💜
Nance, Townes, Guy, Jerry Jeff, Billy Joe, Mickey and many more.God has the ultimate Texas Singer/Songwriters up there with him.

A beautiful rendition of a great song
John Prine could so nail humankind on the head. And Nanci could so bring it home.

Part of my heart is gone! I will miss her unrecorded songs that surely would speak to me and all of her fans! Thank you Nancy for being the song bird and showing us all what you loved. We were the lucky ones!

Janis Ian, a great songwriting talent, sadly unappreciated.

Underappreciated... and tiny!
I'm weeping .
