I'm caught off guard and devastated by her passing. Thirty years ago I was going through a rough time, commuting an hour to a job where I was mistreated. Nanci's music helped clear my eyes as I drove home. As she continued to put out new material I was astounded by the breadth of her song writing. Then she turned to honoring other songwriters, introducing me to the music of people I never would have known about, like Kate Wolf. I'm so appreciative of finding this collection. Clearly, David Letterman had a special place in his heart for Nanci,
Same here. She walked me through a time in my life that was filled with beautiful people. All of those folks have passed now as well as the life I knew and loved, regrettably, I took all of them and that life (my youth) for granted. I miss them, that life. To this day it is very difficult to listen to her songs because they still have a great impact on me and pull up so many good (but sad) memories... But, she deserved this tribute and many more.

Why do I get a lump in my throat and my eyes well up every time I see and hear Nanci sing? No other performer has ever affected me the way Nanci still does... so many emotions
She had a way of drilling right down to the soul level. So sad that she left us. I think she was a fairly tortured soul. I hope she found peace.
She was and always will be a free spirit in her own right, this lass certainly influenced myself through her beautiful voice and music

My dad and I are huge Nanci fans and my dad was childhood friends with Rodney Crowell. When we saw him on stage with Nanci and all those other legends, my dad became extra emotional. Neither of us had ever seen that performance and we are so glad Don posted it. Everyone on that stage is a legend in my opinion, but Nanci and Jimmie Dale Gilmore have two of my favorite voices in any genre of music. I fell in love with Nanci's voice the first time I heard her ("One Fair Summer Evening").

I was a teen in 1992 (or 93/94) and a huge John Prine fan and a couple of friends got tickets to a double bill performance in Columbus Ohio

Best Show I ever seen before or since, Just the both of them did a couple duets, most of the two acts were them solo, so fortunate to see that...
The next day bought Other Voices on CD and to THIS day continues to be one of my very favorite albums ever,I bought McA years on Cassette a couple weeks later, Her voice has been with me most of my life her lyrics have become a part of who I became and am truly thankful to Nanci for her influence in my life..

Nanci bought be dinner and drinks at Brown's Diner in Nashville on my birthday in 2000. I'll never forget it.

Strangest thing happened. I hadn't thought of Nancy Griffith in years and something yesterday made me think of her beautiful angelic voice. I found a playlist and had it on all afternoon while I was working. This morning I wake up to hear that she passed.... RIP Nanci.

Nanci Griffith is so beautiful. It is interesting to see her blossom from a pretty, innocent, young girl into a beautiful, sophisticated, mature woman and into a sweet, respectable senior who's yet sprightly and vibrant and her lovely face still bears that sparkle in her eyes and smile. She is one of the few, rare performing musicians who do not let themselves be jaded by the arduous touring and repetitive stage shows. She must have a strong, true, everlasting love for the music.

The duet between Nanci and Darius Rucker at the 53 minute mark is something that lives in my mind rent free. It is a beautiful, haunting, sorrowful, aching rendition of this song. This live performance has made me cry for almost 25 years. I will miss Miss Nanci so much.
Heard her live in San Diego about 10 yrs ago. She asked for requests and I shouted "Gulf Coast Highway" and, she did it.
I remember watching that when it was shown, blown away thinking "that is pure soul and heart" -came back today just to hear it again, and yep it lives rent free with me also :)

Major props to David Letterman. He gave Nanci the kind of major exposure that most music artists can only dream of, and greatly helped her career. In fact, I've never him do this (to this degree) with any other artist. Nanci, you are missed and many thanks for the years of outstanding music and music performances.
Warren Zevon comes to mind. Dave was equally fond of his music.

I saw Nanci playing for tips at joint in Houston, at the Kerrville Folk Festival (several times), big concert hall and on Austin City Limits. Several of her songs mist me up every time I hear them, never more so than today. Fly sweet lady.
I had no idea Dave had Nanci on his show so many times! For musicians, being invited on Dave’s show was like comedians on Johnny Carson: a life changer. RIP Nanci and thanks Don for your hard work putting this together!

I came right over here because it's the place where I fell in love her and her sound. when I saw her photo ,smiling w/ a guitar, in the obits, I was half watching TV, and half reading the paper, I said nooo! shit! what happened? cancer happened. she was a pure joy. and I'm a Letterman fan, so here I am.
I fell in love with Nanci because I saw her on Letterman. "Drive-in movies..." was the song. Went straight out and purchased the cassette. I was this suburban "new wave" kid in SLC but something about her soft voice and romantic lyrics clicked with me. Her death is tragic and hurts my heart.
@@temple13same here. it was that show which made me love her. yeah, I'm a rock/blues guy, but I enjoy a lot of music. and her personality and talent were just too nice to resist. it always amazes me how the death of someone I never met can affect me so much. if there is a heaven, she's there (and w/ out a good word from her, I don't see myself getting there). it just makes perfect sense that she was a school teacher before music.

I too noticed an instant respect from Dave towards her. He never tried to grope her or do any of the shtick he’d do with starlets. Dave politely shook her hand for the first ten years, then later an occasional peck on the cheek. From the first, Dave invited her to come back anytime and introduced her as a “good friend of the show.” He genuinely liked and respected Nanci.
Letterman was partly responsible for introducing this ( one of a few thousand ) wonderful artist to us.
Nobody else like Nanci for me - She took me off to somewhere with her songs, voice and stage presence, somewhere I can't explain, she just takes me - I have never seen her live, I so wish I had, she seemed to have a special knack of carrying you along when she played - So beautiful as well with that lovely smile and those big eyes emphasising her lyrics - Love this talented artist - Can't believe she's left us
Oh, this is just too beautiful and too sad. I discovered her work when she performed Beautiful on Letterman in 2005. With her passing, that song becomes so much more poignant and bittersweet.

Thank you for posting this Don. My father and I watched this entire video minutes after learning that the great and wonderful Nanci Griffith had passed away. I lost count of how many times I had the privilege of seeing the true voice of Texas perform after my dad turned me on to her music. The only time I attended a show with my father, we actually met Nanci's dad. He was wearing a denim jacket with The Full Moon Orchestra logo stitched across the back and we asked where we could buy one. He grinned and told us he didn't think we could and that he only had one because he was her father. I'll never forget how nice he was and how proud he was of Nanci. She is my absolute favorite and I'm heartbroken about her dying. Thank you for giving my father and me 90 minutes of amazing tribute to an amazing woman. If there's a heaven, Nanci and John Prine are up there right now making the most beautiful music ever.
edit: I also feel compelled to thank David Letterman also. You can tell he sincerely liked her and her music and we all owe him gratitude for having her on his show so many times. Thanks Dave!

I'm 55 and until about a year ago I did not even know her name. Today at work I went to play "Love at the Five and Dime" but did not go to UA-cam 1st, so I was suddenly confronted (on Google) with the news of her passing. I cried. At work. With no shame. She was a jewel.
I was introduced to Nanci Griffith in 1987 or 88 by a fellow waiter at a restaurant where we worked in NYC. Years later (1994), I heard that she was performing on Broadway and was dying to go. A guy I had been dating just a few weeks or so ended up surprising me with tickets. I couldn’t believe it! The night before I had told an old friend that I was going to break up with him. When he asked why, I said, “well, because he’s taking me out to dinner tomorrow night but if her were THE ONE, he would know I want to go to see Nanci Griffith.” You can imagine my surprise when he showed up with tickets. We’ve got married about 2 1/2 years later and saw her together several times over the year, whenever she came to New York City. She is part of the fabric of our marriage. Thank you for putting this compilation together - so wonderful to see and hear her beautiful voice again, especially to see her over the years, just as we did as we followed her career.
Having followed Nanci's music for thirty years, knowing there will be no more new music is sad. But the library of work will be with us to remember her.
Like Stan Rogers. We must make the most of what we've got.

The day she taped with Tom Russell I was in NYC and found out she would be on Letterman. I was to late to get a ticket, but the lady in the window said I could wait around for a no show if I wanted to. I waited for hours, but no luck. So I saw a flower stand across the street and bought a bouquet and asked them to give them to her, with a card that just said "Thank you, Miss Nanci." Lilies. I hope she got them.

Will, thanks for being her harmony in so many Letterman performances. That was a detail I had likewise completely forgotten.
Putting this together all day and night yesterday brought back to me all those transcendent moments, and there were more than a few times I welled up in grief, gratitude, and love. Those things one can’t adequately explain but can only experience. And this comes only from a fan. I can’t imagine what it’s like to her fellow musicians and friends.

I have loved Nanci all of my life. One of my favorite albums she was on was the Chieftains Christmas in Dublin. It is getting to be that season now and you can be sure I will dig out my well worn copy of that album. Gifted/sweet/amazing-we miss you Nanci. Thank you for sharing her appearances on Letterman...and thanks to Dave for having enough sense to have her on his show so many times over the years. Nanci Griffith was my all time favorite singer. I loved her style of writing and her sound. I was blown away when I saw her in concert the first time. Nanci was one of the most enchanting people I've ever followed or been a fan of. Rest in peace, Nanci. You were the light!
I am 60 years old and didn’t grow up with Nanci Griffith but am now catching up on all the artists who weren’t Top Forty. Nanci is simply brilliant and her star shines even brighter after her passing. So brilliant and so great at giving credit to others. Seeing her is brilliance, humility, and graciousness personified! I look forward to hearing her in the great ever after.

These songs are so important to my entire life, like a timeline, I have lost everyone who mattered to me - these songs take me back to a life I once knew and now that life is gone. I love her music, have all of her CDs, and I am sad she is gone from us, but as much as I love her music, I can no longer listen to her songs because my heart breaks for that life I once knew, and all of my precious people I have lost.
I discovered nanci 10 years ago. I was working the graveyard shift, driving home while the sun was coming up I was listening to kdhx out of st. louis and I heard nanci and have been a fan every since.
My wife and I were in the September 13, 1999 audience. It was a magical experience to be able to hear her do Five and Dime live.
I really liked this singer, from way back in the 80s. More talent than I ever had. RIP, N. G. Thanks for putting a little bit if your soul into every song you ever sang for us.

I worked in a music shop, JG Windows Ltd, in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne just as Nanci was becoming known. A colleague of mine, Gordon, played "Last of the True Believers" seemingly on a loop all day, every day until by osmosis,Nanci had inhabited every cell in the bodies of those of us atuned to her fantastic talent. I was lucky enough to see Nanci in concert twice; 1st when LOTTB gained its international release and secondly when she released Other Voices, Other Rooms. To say I adored her, is an understatement. Prodigious talent, wonderful personality, all-round good egg. RIP Nanci, gone far too soon. RIP Gordon, also far too young.

Eric Taylor, one of the singers in the Texas musicians group that sang Guy Clark's "Desperadoes Waiting for a Train", was actually married to Nancy from 1976-1982.
Miss Eric so much. And now, both of them. It just knocks me down, some days. I haven't written a single song since Eric passed.
Nanci Griffith - her talent didn't speed her to the turbulence of popularity that drove other artists mad, she just showed that music is the most abstract art form and the most poignant.
Rest in peace Nanci. Brought so much joy with voice of an angel.
God, she was such a treasure. Many thanks to Letterman for giving her so much exposure. I remember so many of these performances.

What a great collection and time capsule of Nanci. I had seen many of these clips but many of the later ones are new. And who the heck is giving this thumbs down one day after she passed away?

Only discovered Nanci fairly recently. Was so sad to hear of her passing, but at least we’ll always have her music.

I discovered Nanci on Austin City Limits on PBS in the late 90s. I collected all her albums (and still have them) and even got to see her perform live. Been over 15 years since I've binged on her music and enjoying the memories of those times in my life. So sad she's gone, RIP
I read an article entitled "She Didn't Know How Much She Was Loved". My late wife Betsy introduced me to Nanci Griffith and on 08/14/21 I was wondering if she was tourning when I was completely shocked and devastated by the news of her passing. I was beside myself and very depressed and even today. I watched the Kennedy's tribute on 08/15 and cried and cried. Betsy absolutely love Nanci as we saw her at the Madison (WI) Civic Center and again at the Crystal Grande in Wisconsin Dells. I have 8 (yes only eight) of her albums on my Ipod and shuffle them at least 3x a week. I'm sure Betsy is enjoying all of Nanci's concerts now.

First encounter was "From a Distance" on Austin City Limits many years ago. Have loved her beautiful clear voice and music ever since. She was never afraid to use her voice and music for social commentary and the ideals she believed in. It's a sad day for me and I'm missing her dearly.
I first heard Nanci on a UK TV show about New Country in the late 80s. They showed the vids of Lone Star State of Mind and Ford Econoline. She instantly became my favourite singer-songwriter, which she remains to this day, having collected all her albums and rarities along the way. RIP, Texas songbird.
I love watching the transformation taking place right before your eyes when you watch this. The first time on Letterman's show you could see she was nervous (who wouldn't be?) and then as time goes by you see how much she has grown her stage presence. This makes me appreciate her even more. She will be missed!
I am so glad I get to see her live a half dozen times and have most of her CD's. Each album had a song that spoke to me (if not more).

@@ZachKopkaZake Memorial Hall in Kansas City Kansas. She opened for John Prine. That was the first time. The others were at the Midland Theatre in Kansas City MO.
Okay didn’t expect to immediately start bawling like a baby but that’s what happened. What a wonderful singer. What a great loss.
