I just discovered Townes through an article I was reading about a bar in Galveston that has his image on a banner above the bar. I'm a new fan of his music. I've loved Pancho and Lefty for years, I never knew TVZ wrote it. I'm now listening to all the songs he wrote. I'm so glad I read that article or I might have missed his wonderful gifts he gave us in his music.
My friend discovered Townes in a magazine about 15 years ago.When we listened to his songs they totally blew our minds!. The best singer/songwriter that ever was is Townes Van Zandt!!!. A pure genius!. I have 7 CD's of his music and heard hundreds of his songs.I am left with tears running down my face, listening to him all day and night. When you find someone who writes songs as great as Townes's that hit that mark means he's GOT to be listened to and really get the recognition he deserves!. Sadly he didn't get that recognition but more and more people are discovering him and listening to his songs. Rake, is a favourite of mine, I think it's some of his best work. Highway Kind is another favourite of mine. FUCK all his stuff is great!!!......He's number 1 in my book. So sad he passed away at just 52 but his legacy will live forever!!! R.I.P my dear Townes!.

I’m so grateful that Emmylou Harris recorded Pancho and Lefty on her 1976 album Luxury Liner, that is how I came to love the talented songwriter Townes Van Zandt. I have been immersing myself in Townes music for years and years & my oldest son got tickets for all of us (me, husband, it’s his birthday, son & girlfriend) to go to a Townes tribute concert this weekend, so excited 👏❤️🥰
This is a throwback to legends like Campbell, Cash, Jennings, Robbins, etc. And then there's Townes, he is a legend right there among them. Just consistent hit after hit after hit of great songs. He is quite an amazing singer, songwriter and musician. I really like his fingerstyle playing especially.
Curious: How'd you find him? I found him watching a show about Coast Guard pilots in Alaska; one was leaving three base and transferring to another in the lower 48. He was interviewed on a little local radio station, asked which song he'd like to hear & he said, "To Live Is to Fly." I looked it up and was in love with the music! Little did that pilot know the song is not about actual airplanes!!
@cherylpemberton1676 Well I heard of him just being interested in other folk and country singers like Johnny Cash. I listened to one song and didn't go much further. Recently I got into Blaze Foley through a documentary series I saw and he happened to be close friends with Townes. So it's really thanks to Blaze Foley who is one of the most underrated song writers that a lot of other country singers covered.
Such a great artist. Both with playing the guitar, but more importantly is the words he came up with. I'd say as good as the early Dylan, or Paul Simon....The very sad part is so many people don't know much about him? ...especially 'Pancho and Lefty', all my friends when I ask them "who wrote Pancho and Lefty",,,, they say Willie. I correct them and tell them Townes wrote the song. Now they are educated, and some of them didn't finish High School.
I was introduced to Townes Van Zandt a year ago because someone in my family was playing him a lot. I always stopped what I was going to listen and I still do. Some of his songs sure have a way of making me cry yet I go back for more. Pancho and Lefty was the first song of his I heard and it really left a permanent mark on my music taste.
I see a a common denominator between Townes and Songwriter Phil Ochs who died in 1976 from self asphyxiation after suffering from depression from government oppression
You need to broaden your listening, kiddo. He was good but Dylan and Leonard Cohen are better. Then there's Paul Simon, Dar Williams, Hank Williams. Joni Mitchell. Robert Johnson. Keep your ears open.

First time listener here. Damn this guy is good. I always felt that Johnny Cash was overplayed and his downtrodden mood just wasn't my style, but I find myself really enjoying Zandt.
I don't know if Townes is the best who ever lived or whatever. For singers, I still love Jones best. For songwriters, I must disagree with Steve Earle: I think Steve is a good as Townes. I will say Townes is the creator of one of the very few songs that is actually too sad for me to listen to. That would be "Marie." I can endure a lot after 70 years of practice, but I can't take that one.
@@hudsonthrownunderthebus Jones wrote a few. Seasons of My Heart and Color of the Blues are two early ones, from when the East Texas twang was untouched. Townes is on another level. But Townes does not touch Jones as a singer. Not to my peculiar sensibilities anyway. Wherever those pipes came from (no family history, no childhood mentors from church), he could engulf the listener in emotion that feels so real. (Sorry about the inconsistent verb tenses; but he’s dead and I’m still feeling the emotions.)
The only issue here is some of the total overproduction of some of the songs. As with two of the Nick Drake albums, but it is what it is. I prefer the acoustic live Townes without a doubt.

Such a great artist. Both with playing the guitar, but more importantly is the words he came up with. I'd say as good as the early Dylan, or Paul Simon....The very sad part is so many people don't know much about him? ...especially 'Pancho and Lefty', all my friends when I ask them "who wrote Pancho and Lefty",,,, they say Willie. I correct them and tell them Townes wrote the song. Now they are educated, and some of them didn't finish High School.
I was introduced to Townes Van Zandt a year ago because someone in my family was playing him a lot. I always stopped what I was going to listen and I still do. Some of his songs sure have a way of making me cry yet I go back for more. Pancho and Lefty was the first song of his I heard and it really left a permanent mark on my music taste.

I don't know if Townes is the best who ever lived or whatever. For singers, I still love Jones best. For songwriters, I must disagree with Steve Earle: I think Steve is a good as Townes. I will say Townes is the creator of one of the very few songs that is actually too sad for me to listen to. That would be "Marie." I can endure a lot after 70 years of practice, but I can't take that one.
Jones was a great singer but never wrote his own songs. Van Zandt was the whole deal. Totally original guy.
@@hudsonthrownunderthebus Jones wrote a few. Seasons of My Heart and Color of the Blues are two early ones, from when the East Texas twang was untouched. Townes is on another level.
But Townes does not touch Jones as a singer. Not to my peculiar sensibilities anyway. Wherever those pipes came from (no family history, no childhood mentors from church), he could engulf the listener in emotion that feels so real. (Sorry about the inconsistent verb tenses; but he’s dead and I’m still feeling the emotions.)
The only issue here is some of the total overproduction of some of the songs. As with two of the Nick Drake albums, but it is what it is. I prefer the acoustic live
