Thank you for the great rigging technique. Spent many trips on different lakes trolling for lakers because that's what everyone I knew told me that is what I needed to do to catch them. We might have caught a couple trolling. It just wasn't working out. So I came across this video looking for a better way to fish for lakers. After seeing this I took my son out on the boat to try it. We had one of the best fishing days I have ever had. We caught so many I lost count. My son had never caught a laker before. They all were from 5 - 10 lbs. A heartfelt thank you for sharing this. Gave my son and I a memory we will have forever.
Thank you! Glad it helped you catch some lake trout! That’s why I enjoy making these videos is for things exactly like this!
Great technique. Thanks for the lesson
Thanks, hope it helps you catch more fish!
Tried this method and caught my first lake trout! Thanks!
That’s awesome! Glad it worked for you
Going to try it this weekend
Starting to see more videos of open water lake trout jigging we used to do this 20 30 years ago in Northern Canada guy that taught me was his nickname was jiggin Jake caught my biggest lake trout 42lb using this technique
42 lbs is a good laker! Jigging Jake is one of the better nicknames Ive heard from a camp guide!
Just recently caught a big laker on Georgian Bay using your tube technique. Posted in on my channel. Thanks for this tip it really delivered.
BTW used it ice fishing.
That’s great! I’ll have to check it out. Glad it worked out for you!
It works great both on the ice or open water! It can even be trolled!
John Gaulke who operates Fingerlakes Angling Zone in NY taught me this method in about 2008. It’s an awesome way to target lake trout.
Nice! It definitely works great
Oh man that's an awesome rigging tip! Thanks for sharing! Love it!
Thanks, hope it helps you catch more fish!
@@darylgilbertoutdoors you think that rig attached to a tandem rig would be any good that way you can fish it above and below

Great video and thanks for sharing your tips and techniques, for sure I will try this on my next fishing trip. Tight lines 👉🏻🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣👍🏻
Thanks! Good luck on your next lake trout trip!
Thanks for this great tip! Headed to Lake Mary Ronan in July.😊
Thank you! Good luck out there
Interesting setup and simple too!
Very simple but effective!
Thank you sir! just what I needed to know!
No problem!, good luck with the technique, hope it works well for you
Great video!! Thanks for sharing!!
Thank you!
What a great video informative as! This Aug I'm taking a cousin visiting me to Lac la plonge to jig for lakers.
Thank you! Good luck on your trip hope you catch a giant!
Good video, thanks for the tips.
Thanks and good luck
Nice method of rigging the jig great vid!
Hope it works for you too! Thanks!
Went fishing in a group once. The owner of the boat gave everyone a rod with a large green tube Jig. Then one person got a white tube Jig. He said the idea was all the movement of the other jigs would bring the fish over, and the fish would zero in on the white jig. Then we would just pass the white jig rod around and give everyone a chance to get one.
That’s interesting, how did it work out? We catch on green or chartreuse tubes all the time though here
We had 1 bite, it got off. Most of the other youth weren't that into it . I was the only one there that actually knew how to fish. As soon as the fish got off, the owner of the boat took us somewhere else and then we went back to camp.
It was an interesting method, but it doesn't work if your out by yourself.
Thanks so much! So very appreciated!!
Awesome, Good luck out there!
Great video! Like the tips! We are headed out for some lake trout next week. Thanks for the tips
Thanks and good luck!
Great video
Thank you!
Nice job on the vid bud, great day for a fish
Thanks Terry!
Canoe fisherman here from southern Alberta. Never been able to get deep enough for lake trout but this method looks like it should do the trick! Any more tips for kayak/canoe fisherman going after deep water lake trout/rainbows?
m.ua-cam.com/video/GadQtAvGCFY/v-deo.html
Watch this video of mine it shows a number of other trolling techniques to catch lake trout without using a downrigger or diving discs etc. I would troll the spoons with the inline weight like I show in the video you will catch a bunch out of the canoe/kayak using that method it will get the bait where it needs to be at nice slow speeds
Thank You
Thanks for watching!
Great video. Thanks 👍🏼
Thanks!
hey thanks, great video. Just wish I could see the exactly how the treble hook attaches to the in line wt. I tried to slow it down but still could not see the exact picture of it. Otherwise I cant wait to try it out later this year in Northern Maine.
Use a split ring, attach the split ring to the loop moulded into the line weight and then the treble hook onto the split ring
We still fished for them on lac kipawa when I was a kid with frozen shiners, ran a hook through with a needle and hid the shank of the hook in the mouth of the shiner, sat on bottom in 80 FOW, bail open. Wait for line to start peeling off before setting the hook
Sounds like fun!
You are livin' the dream Sir! ; )
Trying to! Thank you
@@darylgilbertoutdoors I have always dreamed of fishing the "Big Water" in Canada...I'm down in Wyoming and am fortunate to have at least some Mackinaw honey holes.
Also, Kandlefish and Crippled Herring metal jigs are not only deadly for salmon but really deadly for lake trout. Capt Pete
They do work well also! Have caught some big Lakers on jigs like those you mentioned aswell
@@darylgilbertoutdoors Thank you...Pete
Any suggestions in my Lake I have a current when you spot lock on top of them obviously you're line keeps on going farther away from the boat and if I drift I would be off the ledge where they hang out any thoughts you can share on this also thank you great video
Thanks!, how deep is the spot? Could possibly be more effective to troll than jig if the depths are right.
absolutely sick
Thanks! More laker videos coming soon!
Hey Daryl, thanks for dropping knowledge bombs! 🎣 Your video as solid as you rescue missions skills Lol. would you trust the same setup for ice fishing? And what's the secret sauce for weight and hook size? Fishing for advice here, not just fish! 🐟😄
Hey Ali! I do use this setup ice fishing aswell. For the weight I like to find the 2-3 ounce straight inline line weights. They are getting a bit tricky to find now. Hook size a number 2 works well or depending on tube size even a number one
appreciate the tips bro! cheers from Colorado
Thanks, hope it works for you!
Super thankful for the giant weight in the tube tip! I catch lake trout from shore down in Massachusetts. We use 1oz silver and blue kastmasters and have good luck.
Thank you for the Video

Thanks and good luck out there!
Dude that’s awesome. I’m going to Crescent Lake in Oregon for my first time ever never even fish for Lake Trout. I just have a 10 foot inflatable pontoon boat and I’m gonna try like a 1 ounce chrome cast Master up and down off the bottom and maybe like a 1 ounce or 2 ounce whitehair jig do you recommend anything? Thank you so much.
Good luck! Definitely take some white or chartreuse tube jigs
@@darylgilbertoutdoors I caught a 7.32 for my first one on a 2 oz laser minnow by pline 🤘 … addicted!! lol
Nice video bud
Thanks!
New to jigging here, so do you find them on a fish finder and them jig the area? Or jist randomly through a jig down and hope for the best lol
You’ll want to find key structure points where baitfish get trapped or frequent. Look for gradual rocky drop offs or even sand. You’ll also find them on deep structure such as mid lake reefs either on top or around the edges. Look for the key structure then search on it or around it with your graph to pinpoint them then break out the jigs
Awesome thanks for the advice.
Thanks for the video dude..do u have link to the rigging parts?...if not that's alright...thinking about using that setup on Sebago Lake in maine..cheers bud
thefishinhole.com/index.cfm?action=product&kw=%2FKRAMER%2FJUMBO-JELLY-TUBES%2F&se=33020. Thats a link to the only place I know that sells those oversized tubes. The other parts can be found at any tackle store, just inline line weights, split rings and #1 treble hooks

@@darylgilbertoutdoors yes!!!!!!!!! thank you
How do you connect the treble hook to the trolling sinker? I'm about to order some but can't see a way to connect the two
Use split rings
Nice video!
Thanks!
Not jealous. Nope no way. Yes I really am and thoroughly loved the vid. 1st time watching. You are a guide? Hmm
Thanks for watching! Yes I guide full time, haven't been to Great slave to guide in a few years though
Do you think this method could work offshore? I guess not exactly vertical presentation but kinda diagonal.
I think it would work well, can't hurt to try!
Going to have to try this at flaming gorge every other method I've tried hasn't gotten me a big one. Only big one I caught was chasing a Kokanee on the surface and I got my tube between them she turned and ate my tube. And the fight was on.
Awesome! Good luck
Thanks for sharing the jig tip to make my own. With the 1oz jig head and tube setups I used to start trying jigging for char, I find they come off easily. Vertical presentation probably better eh?
I find you get way more hook ups with the vertical presentation and keep a lot more fish hooked with the treble over the single hook above the bait with the traditional tube jig heads
Do you have a link for those 3oz inline line weights and 5" oversized tubes?
The weights keep going out of stock everywhere, so I don’t have a current link for them. The tubes are called jumbo jellies and can be bought at many retail stores across Canada. Any 5” tube will work though that is larger diameter
Great, I want to do the same here in Italy! Can you please describe me your setup with measures? Especially wich kind of rod and reel do you reccomend?
In this video I’m using a 7ft med heavy Cabela’s pro guide rod. The reel is a Cabela’s baitcaster made by Daiwa which Cabela’s doesn’t sell either anymore. I like jigging for lakers with a baitcaster but some people don’t. Preference really. Definitely worth trying one if you haven’t, lots of control and you can get some fast retrieving baitcasters that will help with fishing for lake trout!
Hey would you mind sending a link for those weights and tubes
www.amazon.ca/Fishing-Trolling-Tor-Pedo-Saltwater-Freshwater/dp/B09PFSMHRY/ref=sr_1_12?crid=KTHPVF5VBCHW&keywords=trolling%2Bline%2Bweights%2Bfishing&qid=1683302795&s=sports&sprefix=trol%2Bline%2Bweights%2Bfishing%2Csporting%2C732&sr=1-12&th=1. These look ok, just need some split rings on them.
thefishinhole.com/kramer-jumbo-jelly-tube-tails.html. These are the exact tubes in the video.
Would the lead fall out, or is there something to attach it to?
The lead has built in eyelets on each end. The top end you connect to your line the bottom you add a split ring and your hook. They don’t really move around easily inside the tube you need to press them in and pull them off. Just buy the right size weights for the different size tubes you are using and you won’t have a problem.
Thanks for the video! New to lake trout fishing. I can't seem to find any oversized white tubes or weights around where I am at. Weights I have found online. Any chance you have a link to the white tubes or a brand for easier finding?
Thanks for watching the video! The first link are the ones I'm using in the video, the second are ones I have used before that are comparable to the first link.

Im just getting into chasing lakers, I caught a couple through the ice, but I was just using suckers, would you recommend any other style of jigs?
There are a lot of baits you can try. For vertical jigging I would base the size of your baits off the water you fish though. Hair jigs, Bondy baits, ripping raps, tube jigs, jigging spoons, cicada's, or even try drop shotting ciscoes or bait depending on the regs in your area to name a few to try for sure.
Curious where I can purchase that jig head? That would be perfect for where I fish
Its actually an inline line weight. Most tackle stores should sell them. Pick up some split rings and trebles and you'll be all set
Can’t find those inline weights anywhere!! Cabelas and sail both don’t have them and I’ve tried a couple other local stores. Even when I search online I don’t really find what I’m looking for :(
They are hard to find! Fishin hole in the western provinces used to carry them though but last time I was in store they didn’t have them either
Try “trolling weights” that’s what we call them in Florida. They have come up in my searches.
@@thomasg1671 you’re a legend. I found them. Thanks!
How deep was that spot? Good video thanks man.
Thanks!, this spot ranges from 20-55 ft deep. They would be on different areas of it depending where the bait were.
How deep is the water in this video, can you use lighter maybe 2oz(
I don't want to use lighter. Lake trout don't hit jigs like Walleye do. They don't feel weight and drop a bait. You are better to use a heavier weight so can can work fish more effectively and get down faster
Do you have a link to buy the setup youre using . Im trying your technique this year
You have to put them together yourself as nobody makes a pre rigged one this way. The first link is for the oversized white tubes which are the hard part to find for this set up.
thefishinhole.com/index.cfm?action=product&kw=%2FKRAMER%2FJUMBO-JELLY-TUBES%2F&se=33020
The weights can be found in store at most tackle shops. Just make sure they are the straight ones not the curved mooching style ones. Split rings and #1 treble hooks can be found at any tackle shop aswell. If you don't want to go with the 5" tubes you can also downsize everything to fit your needs. A 2-3 ounce line weight fits well in standard tubes.
@@darylgilbertoutdoors what about your rod and reel im new into the jigging technique
@@frederickjuneau7874 The rod and reel setup I'm using in this video they don't make anymore unfortunately. It is a Cabelas medium heavy pro guide 7 ft rod with a Cabelas baitcaster reel. The reels were made for Cabelas by Diawa but Cabela's isn't carrying Cabelas branded gear anymore it seems.
@@darylgilbertoutdoors thank you for the tips buddy

Exactly
were do you get the oversize tubes-would this work for much deeper trout say 80-120 feet
These tubes were bought from a fishing store in Western Canada called The Fishin hole. the Tubes are called Jumbo Jellies. Waterwolf another Canadian company also sells similar oversized tubes. This technique would work that deep for sure especially with the 3 ounce weight.
@@darylgilbertoutdoors OK thanks 40 bucks for 4 tubes sent to america no thanks i will find something else.
@@thomasjefferson5241 Yea that's little crazy! Should be under $10
Ever use bondy baits?
Yea, we have used lots of them. They catch fish. The multiple trebles can get annoying as the second seems to hook them in the eye most of the time though. It wouldn't be a bad idea to take one of the smaller ones they have now and rig it up differently so its only running one treble.
@@darylgilbertoutdoors hmmm well they do have big split rings. Wonder how the hookups would be if you swapped for big single hooks??
Only wondering because finding big tubes around here is insane. Drove all over hells half acre and couldn't find any bigger than 4"
@@WheresTheSauce I would fish this spot in the video with the standard Bondy's some days. They still caught small fish on them as well the size didn't make a difference. I'm not sure how the singles would work on one. You may get less hook ups depending on the way the hook is facing and how the fish hits the bait. Try here for oversized tubes bassmagnetlures-waterwolflures.com/product-category/water-wolf/tubes-water-wolf/. We used those waterfwolf Tubezilla 5" tubes they were comparable to the ones Im using in the video. I really like this presentation. Cannot find anything online similar heavier than 2 oz, and the links provided in an older comment do not apply. I have 2 trips within the next month- Boundary Water lake and Manitoba. Both hold lakers. If you could provide any further info on the manufacturer that would be great. Thank you.

Number one tip is Lakers almost always hit on the drop, watch the line

Oh really
Try it next time without the Tube, just the weight, you'll be surprised. Maybe not so much just jigging on the bottom, but on the chase, they will hammer it.
Interesting
Classic big fat white Tube down deep for lakers vertical jigging. Looked like a nice day ......Still the go to way for them with the tube jigs>>> Can't wait for my state to actually get around to stop doing publicity thing of the no heat electric during winter months , no fishing etc etc that they were sharing with someone else promoting .... To going back to normal again so I can get out fishing again hit some lakers up .. NIce day also
Can’t beat a white tube jig for a lake trout!
Are deep drop offs good for big lake trout?
They can be for sure. It's all relative to the water you are fishing though. If the deep drop is near the deep water that holds Lake trout during your summer months you can bet you'll find some nearby.
@@darylgilbertoutdoors alright thanks, got big plans, gonna try to beat a state record this summer!
I’ve had better luck for big Lakers on flats shallow or deep not too far from shelves. Most assume because of these videos that their mostly on ledges.
@@MountainStateAngler Im not fishing the ledge. I said there's one behind me in the video that they come up to the flats that I am fishing. In this video I'm fishing a big sand flat with virtually zero structure other than the odd depth change.
@@darylgilbertoutdoors i know I watched the whole video. I was responding to the guy above. I guess I could have written my message better when I said “these videos” I think I heard the word drop offs when I wrote that. But a lot of videos lead people to think drop offs or ledges are where you get the big fish. :D
How deep are u fishing here
In this video I was anywhere from 20-60 ft. This water is unique though in the fact that the Lakers don't go deep on this waterbody because it is so far North the water is always cold.

30 lb leader....clear water. Lol.
You obviously don't realize there's fish exceeding 30 lbs caught here regularly
@@darylgilbertoutdoors my customers catch lake trout on lake superior up to 50 lbs with 12-15 lb flouro leaders and using jigs up to 8 oz. Highest lb leader I've ever used for jigging lakers is 17 lb and that's an overkill.
Different waters require different set ups. With the rock structure we normally fish around and the possibility of catching a 50 plus lb fish, I'll stick with the 30 lb fluoro. When a client breaks off a trophy fish boat side due to a light leader usually they're not too happy about it. The small difference in diameter of the line especially when running fluoro doesn't effect the fish or action of the bait where we are so its not a problem for us.
@@darylgilbertoutdoors if you look up where I fish.... it's a 5x1 mile rock called "stannard rock" home of the best lake trout fishing in the world. Was only trying to give ya some advice....but, then again, you are the one posting videos giving advice. I'll still hold to my comment and say 30 lb is an overkill. But, different strokes for different folks I guess
Everyone is definitely different. I as a guide take pride in landing the clients dream fish, after time guiding you realize the guests could care less about a light line bragging title than they do having boat all their fish. Everyone is definitely different but it’s like the guys who brag about getting 2lb bass on light mono. It’s like cool but I’m not baking your congratulation cookie for you. I’d love for you to send me some 50lb trout like Daryl here has got and I’ll be the judge if you’re all talk or if you can give us some help. Please my Instagram is emmm72 I’m waiting :)
Are there Techniques That Guides Don't Want You to Know? really? like we go to bed knowing we could have caught more fish if we wanted to? that's the plan? keep secrets? we are guides.
What
Do you use a fish finder? What depth are you looking for?
I run a garmin livescope now, in this video I was running a hummingbird helix. Depends on the time of year but a good consistent depth to find them all seasons would be around 55-70 ft for lake trout
great vid!!
Thanks!
