Thank you for talking about the importance of fish safety and health. Catching fish is fun; sharing tips is fun; however, too few people practice conservancy of the fish. This keeps fish healthy and hatcheries full.
They dont know jack shit about fish safety and health, NOONE with a bit of knowledge holds a fish up in the air for a minute, try running for your life for 5 min then put your head under water and see how well you feel after a minute. My bet is you can MAYBE last 5-8 seconds.
Awesome video. Very educational and intuitive. Gonna be applying these techniques to our spring trip up here in Quebec on lake Memphremagog. Nice clean release btw!!
congrats on a great fish. in efforts to conserve the health of these beauties, i usually tare my scale with the net on it and weigh the net. thats a great tip for chopping down a rod. im going to give it a try, but i may have a harder time doing that to a higher end rod... but i guess if its a dedicated rod.....
Your rod looks like it might be a little light for these big fish. I would think you would want a heavier one so you could handle these big fish better or is the light rod for a purpose?
try getting out there and fishing. i use one bait for lake trout, i have hundreds of hours of lure washing tied up in to this bait. that being said, when i give the same bait to a fishing buddy, i generally tend to out fish them with the exact same bait. if you must know what bait he was using, it was a silver grey tube jig, looks like a 4 inch and likely a 3/4oz jig head, but you would know that if you watched the vid and paid attention. next step, go out to the shop and buy exactly that, see how poorly it will do on your set up. trust me theres more to it than whats tied on to the end of your line.
@@philspaces7213 seems to have a nasty bug up his butt. Maybe he isn't getting laid, otherwise he might have been willing to just answer the question without being an arrogant jerk. Good luck Jim Munoz. I had the same question myself as well as line and leader type & size. I have always caught my Lake Trout trolling but am curious about trying something different.
In the seventys thru the ninetys we trolled wire line and heavy gear. A old art of fishing till we noticed these Jiggers be were working about a fraction of what we were and were liking our butt with big fish. We caught a lot of thirty's and occasional 40s but they exceeded that.
Well done on the quick release without barely any handling!! I am going into Tazin Lake Sask for a month this year, Can not wait to see how many monsters I come across!!!
@@philspaces7213 Myself I caught a 31 and 51 lb laker. One of my guests got a 60 lb. Two of my other guests 3 weeks ago got a 37 and 39 lb ers. One nice big 45 inch pike.
Hey there...I've watched this vid waaaaaayyyyy too many times! LOL....make me cut the top off of two very nice rods! :) my question is about your boat of choice. I'm NEW to lake fishing (fly fish on the rivers). I bought a small 16.5' Crestliner SportFish last year and now have become addicted to chasing the Lakers. The wife and I like our little boat but I think we'd enjoy more room. I've started looking at upgrading...looked at larger versions of what we already have. Seriously looked into cabin type boats like a Duckworth. These lakers tend to be in larger lakes around me (Wyoming) which can get nasty quickly. So, what made you decide on a bass boat? For large lakes...what would be your boat of choice? Thanks in advance!
Look into Weldcraft. I recommend getting some nice downriggers and a planer board setup if you want to catch them more consistently. The jig bite doesn't always hit, but it's the most fulfilling.
Awesome. Get yourself an unhooking mat made for European carp angling. Makes handling big fish much easier and very safe of course. They cost pennies to boot. Weigh slings are useful too.
zack muir oh haha well I would suggest releasing anything big and also releasing any trout you catch in river because people get mad about that. And I would release all bass, pike and lake trout
Know exactly where you are and the point you are fishing. We are headed up there this weekend for a 4 day fall run. Macks are moving in shallow, the feedbag should be on this weekend.
Even though you asked a year ago. To be honest with a light setup anything over 12lb is a bit overkill, I use 9lb nano line and cant even break off on a rock snag if I wanted to. Most lines are rated 15-20% under the actual break strength. Using a palomar knot is the best option on braded lines that match water color makes the line almost unbreakable compared to a light setups max drag. Figured in the last year you figured most of this out, but hopefully this is some insight for new watchers
If you’re not going to keep the fish, no sense bringing it in the boat. They struggle less and survive much better if you only bring them out for a quick pic
This is Flaming Gorge Utah/Wyoming. Huge Lake Trout and awesome Brown also. Huge Kokanee salmon also. Please share more information, somewhere sometime somebody shared information with you. Pay it forward. Thanks
Thanks for not "hot spotting". Our reservoirs out here see enough pressure with Fishbrain Facebook and UA-cam. For everyone wondering what hes useing... Figure it out yourself like the rest of "Non hot-spotters".
These videos are great but not showing what they are doing and what they are using and they make it look so easy when I have fished for days and only got one bit off big fish and if this is at flaming gorge the locals get very mad if they show exactly how they catch the big fish
Why are you releasing those fish?!?! Those are great looking fish to keep and eat! After days of looking at Colorado fishing I’ve only seen one or two videos where they actually kept the fish to eat it. It’s really starting to make me believe that people in Colorado don’t believe in catching and keeping fish. Can someone explain this to me?
I am a Colorado native and I only release after I have caught my limit. A lot of my buddies from out of state who moved here release their catches so it must be the non natives who are here. That is my best guess.
@@mikebaldino296 Those big fish maybe 30-40 years old and not as good to eat as fish in the 5lb class. These big fish will be the spawners too. Why not release them and let another angler have the pleasure of catching them.
@@AFishTale I have never had a bad lake trout regardless the size, and I only try to fish for them from Blue Mesa Reservoir where it is encouraged to keep them as they harm the salmon population in the lake and river. Yeah since Weed became legal everyone moved here so the price of a Fishing License is going up every year we’re having a problem with invasive species. And yeah with everyone moving here you don’t know if there are many big fish but a lot like to Catch and release. And yeah if you don’t release some the fish you do catch like the monsters that are there then you end up fucking everyone over if no monsters that means bad ecosystem
I thought it was about eating fish? So we catch them, release them, and then go buy farm raised fish for 12 dollars a pound? Sounds pretty backwards to me.

Jim Taylor as long as they aren’t hot spotting these reservoirs. All these yuppies run straight there and keep their limit and now that reservoir is all but fished out.
"Extra heavy rods"? Lmao. There's nothing about any of the rods on that boat that are "extra heavy". I own a few rods that could be considered extra heavy. They're about 12 feet long and capable of heaving 8 ounces+ of weight and bait. A good size bluefish would probably snap those "extra heavy" guppy rods. LoL
Ed Hotchkin your lame because you comment trash on a video which took time and effort. And do not blame people for being more intelligent because they use better equipment.
Y0ungSpagh i beg to differ. Using computers against live animals is such a pussy way. We dont need to hunt any more (supermarkets) so going about this sport (wish I am not against) should be done in a more equal way. Like a laser sighter rifle on a bunny rabbit... it’s for dumbshits.
Is it just me or it seems like everything you are using was a secret and you didn't want anyone to know other than you mentioned how you butchered up a rod to give you some backbone to haul in these lake trout. Dude- share about the reel, rod, line, lures and action of it to get the trout to bite...
Your gonna end up ripping your net apart realesing fish in it. Release them in your hands best way also to stop the hook from going into your net,,, net the fish dump it right away in the boat you wont hurt the fish yah it will flop everywhere
