I got a tip! What i use is a Long Shank pan fish hook. The longer and lighter the better. NOW take a fly fishing float and stick it to the shank facing backward. Now your bait will suspend off the bottom at whatever leader you set your weight to. The float hangs off the BACK of the hook not obstructing the point. Add whatever bait and youre good. I learned this after a decade of watching marshmallows and power bait float to the top of the water after a couple bumps. Best part is they come in colors and NEVER fall off!
Haha! It's pretty hard to get strikes on film. You can't move the bait too much or it'll go off frame. It's easy to psych yourself out. This was my first attempt and I got 3 strikes on front of the camera. My latest video I got 16. Go check it out!
Great video! I would suggest the reason that your having trouble hooking these fish is the heavy leader and too big hooks, they feel that resistance from them and spit it out. When using similar baits use a treble (#8) hook and also use braided line for more sensitivity, you will definitely feel the bite easier. This drop rig is the same that my grandfather used for 75 years and it what I was taught to use at a young age, although I haven't used this rig for trout in still water for years I just figure out how high the weeds are and pinch a split shot on the line at the appropriate depth. My go to bait for still water trout fishing is the bright green Power bait with glitter in it, just make sure you put enough on the treble hook (cover the hook up completely) so the bait floats (above the weeds). You can test this before you cast it out. I'm surprised that the corn wasn't very effective, when I was a kid we caught bucket loads of trout with corn but it was always in moving water. As a side note my favorite bait for trout is a threaded live fathead minnow on an open shank double #8 hook however it is almost impossible to use this in a stocked trout lake because the blue gills and bass will hit them on almost every cast before the trout gets to it. PS; If you guys and gals are flounder fishermen there is a guy on You Tube who trolls for them while using a kayak, I believe in Long Island sound, with a Go Pro camera on his rigs. You will get to see some great videos and you will get to see some really fascinating video of fish behavior as the flounder chase and get caught on his rigs. If you search Go Pro flounder fishing I believe you'll get to his videos.

I loved this! It was alot of fun. It reminded me if when I was a kid, I would pleaad with my dad to take me fishing with him and my brothers when they would have their annual "just the boys" fishing trip. My brothers never had a problem with my going, so of course, they were just the coolest brothers (and Dad) in the universe! I was just not content staying home doing "girl stuff" with my 4 sisters; bo-ring! It was additionally exciting, as I love the outdoors and animals of all kinds, so I got the best of both worlds. We would go trout fishing mainly along the Tuolomne river in Northern California, (in the vicinity of Yosemite Nat.Park) where I, and they, always caught fish. Those were the days in the early 1970's, of some very happy memories! I was about 9-10yrs old at the time. It was so beautiful there, patches of goldeny-green grass, a variety of majestic and colossal granite boulders generously clustered in the landscspe, and a mixture of oaks and multiple pines that smelled amazing woven thru the fresh mountain air. You could literally drink the water right out of the river, without having to consider if it was a bio hazzard or contaminated with who-knows-what. Most of he time, my pop had those colored salmon eggs and or worms, and they seemed to work good enough. These are memories I am especially fond of, considering my brother and father are no longer alive, and no longer see or hear from my step brother anymore, so our trout fishing trips have a special place in my heart, and its where my dad taught me how to fish! I'm so grateful to have been able to explore the absolute world class beauty of that geographically outstanding location. Even after all these years and with so many things that have changed and unlikely holds the same prestine appearance, the Tuolomne still flows just as beautifully, and is large enough in June after the snow has melted, that you can distinctly hear the sound of its rushing water, rolling thru the woods approaching it from a distance. The water was always crystal clear, and there were parts of it that were deep enough to go for a refreshing dip on a hot day. It was also fun to have lunch with my dad while we talked about the fish we caught, while pointing out all the beautiful sights in our surroundings. It was during our lunch when we had made the discovery, that the rainbow and German brown trout in this river, love cheese! Some had fell to the ground while making lunch and had gotten too sandy to eat, and not wanting to attract yellow jackets (like Wasps) or ants, we tossed in the river. We were stunned at the reaction that occurred a few minutes after! Even the craw daddy's (like small lobsters) started making their way twards it as they travelled onto the open sandy patch where it landed, and the fish would dart out from shade of the rocks that surrounded it. Dad and I knew we were onto something, and thought we'd go for a change in our bait. Much to our surprise, We caught several fish, one after the other, until we ran out of cheese. By this time, my brothers had come back from up the river, because the fish weren't biting as much in the heat of the afternoon sun. They were understandably jealous and a bit puzzled how we caught so many fish compared to them. We headed back to our campsite so we could clean them up for dinner, and let them in on our discovery. We got to try the cheese bait one more time the next morning before we left for home. And we all caught even more. Every now and again it feels good to think about times like those. This video was fun to watch, as jogged my memory of this fun time I had, by seeing someone experimenting with a bait selection. It was definitely interesting and so much more complete seeing the effect it had on the fish with the underwater camera. It was fun and interesting to see and I really enjoyed it. Thanks so much for making and sharing this video.😉👍🇺🇸🐟🌄🌲🗻🏞🌌
Allison- Sometimes when I go to church while the worship music is playing in the beginning of the service, I can see again me and my Dad in the rowboat fishing. The sky was so big and wide ! My Dad always took me out fishing. He told me twice in his life that his Dad never took him fishing. We went all around the Chicago area, all around Wisconsin. The most beautiful sunsets in Wisconsin. Caught and ate a lot of panfish. That was the’70’s. I was in a club with Mick Thill. Learned how to slip bobber fish. Caught 10 species of fish out of the lake we used to only catch pumpkinseeds and bluegills. In his last 10 years of life, I put him on 8 1/2 “ bluegills and 11 and 12” perch. Caught perch as big as your shoe If you are good, and you enjoy it, fishing is not a sport but a LIFESTYLE Are you going to go out fishing again?

I use corn as my go to bait for trout and use just plain old frozen corn, put it in a container to take out with me and then sprikle some garlic powder on top or into the corn, just like the powerbaits have it added into them as well. I have never NOT caught trout using this technic. Great video's and easy to follow tips on gear and little extra's to enhance the experience.
Great video. Watching this really improved my hook up rate. Seeing how trout bite, I realized I was presenting bait that was too big. Cut it up smaller and things improved tremendously.
Interesting and educational. The camera can't show the fish sense of smell, but the shrimp apparently has a fishy smell that they like. Need more videos like this
I never comment on any video, and every day I see video of trout fishing and I think that this one is the best one. You explain very well and also illustrated us what is happening.
Someone else probably said this already but I’d love to see a marshmallow vs. Powerbait comparison. Both around the same size, both float, it would be interesting to see which does better.
I was fishing with worms some days ago and the trout never bited it! I could see a lot smaller swimming and checking it out but never taking a real bite! Dunno man, could it be because they already were full or something?
@@izaakmoran8181 Okey, thanks for the information! I am very much a beginner in trout fishing. I am going to try powerbair next time to see if that works better. Have also bought a new float and line and I am going to change to them to see if the fish were scared of that somehow
I've always gone for worms and powerbait for trout fishing. If they aren't hitting worms on a J hook I'll switch to a treble and powerbait, then go through all my flavors and colors until I find what's popular on the menu. Last weekend it was a purple powerbait that was corn scented, and my dad caught a couple on a worm, but both of us were catching them at a higher level in the water table, which we figured would be the case because it was such a cool and cloudy day. Unfortunately that's not always the case though, and we both tried the high water table at a different location on the same lake, got skunked for 2 hours straight, and then we switched to something which could sink to the bottom and caught one right away. Same day, same lake, same fish, different location, caught them earlier in the day at about 3 feet underwater, and later in the day at about 40-50 feet underwater. Sometimes you've gotta go find them.
Great Video! I Fish a high lake in Oregon called Diamond Lake. Mainly a rainbow lake up to 15 lb rainbow have been caught average is 3-5 lb. I have fished the lake for 35 years. I use white marsh mellow and 1/2 a night crawler. I thread the marsh mellow down the line to the top of a # 16 gold treble hook and thread the worm thru the hook leaving about 1in tail of the worm. The marsh mellow helps float the worm. Very successful and big rainbow. The other good bait is rolled up round Velveeta cheese balls about the size of your thumb nail Slide cheese ball down the line onto the #16 gold treble hook so no hooks show.. You can also add 3 red balls of fire fish eggs to each hook with the cheese. You will catch more fish than you can believe. Always still fishing off the bottom from 12' to 50 ft of water depending on weather and water temp. I use different flavors of power bait that works well. but if the fish are not hitting it, I will go to the worm and marsh mellow or the Velveeta cheese and most times catch fish. Hope this technique catches you bigger and more fish.
Berkley gulp sandworms (yes saltwater) in camo color, all I really use for stocked trout any more. Usually on a larger hook like a size four octopus, helps to prevent gut hooking.
@@josiahbenitez9739 I can't say first hand but from my experience a wild trout would laugh at a size 4 hook with anything on it lol. Maybe it works fine on lake trout but the wild trout near me are smart, and pretty small for that matter. I just use small barbless hooks and set the hook quicker than I would if i was fishing for dinner and worried about missing sets.
Any trout at the pond in this video would laugh at a number 4 hook as well! Number 8 is as big as I would go, but I usually use number 10 or smaller. For flies I like to use smaller as well. Hard to get a hook set with anything bigger than a number 10 fly.
Unreal underwater footage man that’s so freaking cool. Just subscribed brother can’t wait for new content. So cool seeing those trout all schooled up like that.
Yeah it was!! I definitely want to capture more species on the underwater camera too! It's so cool to see later on and helps me (and hopefully others!) to understand the fish better. Can't thank you enough man for watching, commenting and subscribing! 😉🎣🐟👍
@@EParkFishing For sure! Seeing how those fish are acting underwater definitely helps you understand them better, that’s so awesome! Do me a favor & check out my channel when you get the chance. Where you from man?
The best bait I've found for trout is any insect found in the water. In a stream, the best bait, hands down, is Helgromites (unhatched may fly larvae) who are found on the bottom side of rocks in running water. Next to that, crickets are killer on trout. I grew up using salmon eggs for trout and have always had good success using them. I've also used florescent power worms that worked good for me.
I've always had success using salmon eggs in streams, & crickets in both lakes & streams. I'll have to try the helgromites , thanks for the tip. & nightcrawlers have been hit or miss for me.
Your videos are awesome, the under water footage is great 👍, one thing I noticed is that your drop shot is too heavy is why you're not able to feel the fish nibbles on the bait, but it also makes for great footage. Keep the videos coming the under water stuff is great to see the reaction of the fish. 😃👍
In the mid 1960,s an old man would always catch a lot of trout on the bottom. He saw me watching him one day and called me over . he showed me his secret weapon, velveta cheese ,he would roll a small ball .The trout loved it.I haven,t used it since then lol
Great stuff! I like using Wanglers (European Nightcrawlers) when I use bait and bobber, otherwise tossing a Mepps Aglia 1 in rainbow trout color scheme, a small Kastmaster silver spoon, or a Rebel Wee Crawfish crankbait are my go-tos.
Tiny red bead above a size 6 hook with bread is a killer bait (some days). Garden worm is definite classic as shown in your footage, great upload enjoyed it much 😀
Interesting to see how they operate under the water. They sure do hit their target pretty ferociously for such unintimidating fish. That’s why I’ve always loved to trout fish. They’ve got a lot of heart and thrash and fight quite a lot. Pretty particular and clever little fellas too. It seems like their appetite changes from day to day.
I grew up fishing almost everyday in New England, 80’s and 90’s. I ran out of bait one successful day and instead of calling it a day I ripped a small piece of tall grass I was standing in and put it on the hook. Lol, the stockies kept biting on that.
That means you are getting "curiosity" strikes. Trout don't have hands so inspect weird objects with their mouths. Sometimes you will get lucky and get them hooked even though they aren't feeding. It's not really a solid strategy for fishing, but might work if you forgot your bait and are extremely lucky lol.
@@rogercarpenter418 I really doubt it, but I will add it to the weird bait list. It'd be interesting to see how they would react to a dandelion top. I don't even think they'd look at it, but who knows.

I had two hooks every drop shot and switched between power eggs, powerbait, salmon eggs, egg clusters, and red worms The red worm outfished every thing I had
I appreciate that you make your own content! I loved the vibes with the music and also the education portion as well! We need more people like you posting content!
Great video, I think these are stocked trout in a lake, correct? Just shows that many different baits are possible and some more effective than others. Before Powerbait was popular we used mini march mellows. Awaiting a comparisons on Powerbait, power worms, mouse tails, etc. versus marshmallows, lures, and natural bait like nightcrawlers, or crickets. I was once fishing a small native trout river with someone who had crickets. I forgot what I was using but we could see the fish and were sight casting. He hooked the crickets and casted upstream above the trout. Once hooked the crickets floated and were moving their legs in a fast erratic action. The trout attacked every time one floated by. I imagine they produce the ideal bait trifecta of sound, smell, and sight that is too irresistible for predators feeding on the surface. I’m not sure what would happen if the crickets were placed towards the bottom, if the crickets would die or not or how stocked trout would react to them since they are grown up eating man made food. I also wanted to point out that the trout behave differently in a river versus a lake. Most perhaps all fish are sensitive to water temps. In a river temps are more constant and fish prefer structure to wait and ambush prey that moves down stream. Stocked trout have been raised in a certain water temperatures (I think around 55 degrees). So they will tend to be attractive to the water temps they are conformable in. So perhaps the most important step in a lake is finding those holes which have water temps that the trout prefer. A lot of bank fishermen set up their poles and chairs and hope for a bite. IMO it is better to be mobile. Casting a few times in a 10 to 2 o’clock pattern and if not getting bit move on to another location
Thanks for the comment! I'm planning on a powerbait color comparison video next, but I want to do some comparisons between natural baits, flies and powerbait as well. I have a feeling the shrimp would win out but whoknows! But bigger fish would probably be caught on flies. That's been my experience anyway! Welcome to the channel! 🙏🎣🐟
@@EParkFishing btw i think uou mentioned you are in Central OR. I have family moving near Sisters so that will be a while new fishing experience when I visit.
Use a size 6 or smaller circle hook and let the trout set the hook on themselves. When the rod tip bends, let it bend and load up 2-3x before reeling in. Use a bell alarm to alert you to when the trout have become interested in your bait.
I fish in both salt and fresh water and use circle hooks exclusively. Most of those trout that took the bait but didn't but didn't get hooked would be hooked with a circle hook.
Thanks for the compliments!! I'm going to be working on a video explaining my underwater set-up and improvements I'm working on to it as well. Can't wait to do it!

July 28, 2021----68 years old and as a kid, used whole kernel corn and nightcrawlers to catch bluegill. Now basically use nightcrawlers for bass and trout. Brother and his family live north of Tampa and they use those shrimp platters sold by Walmart which comes in handy as you can also eat that bait. again, mainly for bluegill. I've also used Velveeta cheese for trout. This is the stuff that comes in the cardboard box and NOT the pouch stuff, though now I wonder how thing would work if I used a piece of corn and a dap of that pouch cheese.
Michael Paul casters are the cocooned version of the maggot. That’s the stage between a maggot and a fly. Casters are excellent bait for lots of coarse fish.
I think the missed hook sets are from the way the drop shot is rigged, i always tie my drop shots straight to the line, instead of off the line with a leader. (At least in my head) that leader acts like a buffer and doesn’t give you the immediate power of having it tied straight on to the line.
A much better setup is a drop shot hook, size #6. Hooks much better. And instead of using a drop weight rig, use a bullet lead with a swivel and a bead to act as a bearing between the weight and the swivel. It lets you feel each strike. Notice in your video that a significant number of fish inhale the bait as they are rising. With your setup you can't feel those bites. A bullet weight above a swivel and a bead to act as a bearing lets you feel each nibble. The larger drop shot results in many more hooked fish.

I spent an unfortunate amount of time researching this due to these comments LOL but apparently it's rainbow trout that can't stop eating, but Brook and brown and other types of trout have the sense to stop. So the rainbow trout are the only ones that are in danger of eating too much corn. Kinda hilarious. They're like me at Christmas dinner 😂 Also I'm doing a powerbait underwater video right now and I was shocked to find out that powerbait actually doesn't hurt the fish either. They can pretty much pass anything that can't be digested. It was designed to be biodegradable as well which makes sense.

Sometimes when I go to church while the worship music is playing in the beginning of the service, I can see again me and my Dad in the rowboat fishing.
Caught perch as big as your shoe
If you are good, and you enjoy it, fishing is not a sport but a LIFESTYLE

I use corn as my go to bait for trout and use just plain old frozen corn, put it in a container to take out with me and then sprikle some garlic powder on top or into the corn, just like the powerbaits have it added into them as well. I have never NOT caught trout using this technic. Great video's and easy to follow tips on gear and little extra's to enhance the experience.
What setup do you use with the corn
@@jackcasey2218 just a slip float to determine best depth for what fish I wanted and a #14 hooks. 4lbs line and light to medium rig
Great video. Watching this really improved my hook up rate. Seeing how trout bite, I realized I was presenting bait that was too big. Cut it up smaller and things improved tremendously.
Interesting and educational. The camera can't show the fish sense of smell, but the shrimp
apparently has a fishy smell that they like. Need more videos like this

I never comment on any video, and every day I see video of trout fishing and I think that this one is the best one. You explain very well and also illustrated us what is happening.
Wow thank you! That's quite a statement and I appreciate it! 🙏🐟🎣
My friend OMG I've drop shot for bass for years BUT never thought of this for trout!! Man I owe you a huge thanks for high pressured trout waters!
Someone else probably said this already but I’d love to see a marshmallow vs. Powerbait comparison. Both around the same size, both float, it would be interesting to see which does better.
Ya I think powerbait would be the best of both worlds, shrimp smell and mushy like marshmallow.
I was fishing with worms some days ago and the trout never bited it! I could see a lot smaller swimming and checking it out but never taking a real bite!
Dunno man, could it be because they already were full or something?
@@RubberTagit’s also pretty good fly season right now so they could be full but keep on trying
That's awesome! I'll have to try Diamond lake sometime. Tight lines!
Been using dedicated flys only for 55 yrs. On sweet water, but bait and metal and plastic on salt. Video was really good. Thanks.
Thank you for the kind words!! Love that you call it sweet water! 🎣👍
Combining a worm with a salmon egg always works well for me.
Berkley gulp sandworms (yes saltwater) in camo color, all I really use for stocked trout any more. Usually on a larger hook like a size four octopus, helps to prevent gut hooking.
Ever worked for wilds
@@EParkFishing Agreed. 8 is useable but I only have used them when I am out of hooks and the bait shop doesn't have any 10,12 in stock.

Underwater footage was national geographic. Fishing skills just leveed up. I may put a camera Underwater now
Awesome video especially to see how they react to the different bates
Thanks dude!! Tight lines!
Do you recommend about a 1/2 oz egg weight above a swivel then the leader with the floating bait as the terminus?
Also use very light line . No spitting out !

In the mid 1960,s an old man would always catch a lot of trout on the bottom. He saw me watching him one day and called me over .
he showed me his secret weapon, velveta cheese ,he would roll a small ball .The trout loved it.I haven,t used it since then lol

Yeah my Dad took me out fishing for panfish with velveeta as a kid. I definitely always thought of it more as bait! Lol
That was a great educational show and so very cool.
Thanks for all the ideas!! I've been using minnows lately and having pretty good luck. But I had no idea about some of these! Cool..
I have never seen someone miss so many fish
That was very cool! And eyeopening on what those little buggers are doing down there!!
I grew up fishing almost everyday in New England, 80’s and 90’s. I ran out of bait one successful day and instead of calling it a day I ripped a small piece of tall grass I was standing in and put it on the hook. Lol, the stockies kept biting on that.
is it a good time to say now that i have hooked trouts on both earplugs and ciggarettbuds?
That means you are getting "curiosity" strikes. Trout don't have hands so inspect weird objects with their mouths. Sometimes you will get lucky and get them hooked even though they aren't feeding. It's not really a solid strategy for fishing, but might work if you forgot your bait and are extremely lucky lol.
In a stocked trout pond like this just a dandelion top is good enough. Brook trout in streams good old worms
@@rogercarpenter418 I really doubt it, but I will add it to the weird bait list. It'd be interesting to see how they would react to a dandelion top. I don't even think they'd look at it, but who knows.

My son says when he fishes for trout, he uses the very very smallest hooks he can possibly find, and it works really well for him.

Dude thank you so much! Can't believe I didn't see this comment until now!
i wish the fishing holes near me had that many fish
They do. Fishonline
By the way, those trout are both stocked and wild.
@@EParkFishing btw i think uou mentioned you are in Central OR. I have family moving near Sisters so that will be a while new fishing experience when I visit.

Awesome to see what’s going on with the fish! Thanks! I’ve used worms, works great!
Good stuff thank you!
Reading all the comments on bacon, eggs and potatoes gave me the munchies

July 28, 2021----68 years old and as a kid, used whole kernel corn and nightcrawlers to catch bluegill. Now basically use nightcrawlers for bass and trout. Brother and his family live north of Tampa and they use those shrimp platters sold by Walmart which comes in handy as you can also eat that bait. again, mainly for bluegill. I've also used Velveeta cheese for trout. This is the stuff that comes in the cardboard box and NOT the pouch stuff, though now I wonder how thing would work if I used a piece of corn and a dap of that pouch cheese.
Power Bait always works for me. Never tried shrimp for trout but for Surf fishing works great the Perch love it!

Now it's powerbait
Amen. They just can’t help themselves.
over in the UK if we dont use flies, maggot is always the killer bait, along with worm. natural trout will rarely touch anything else.
That's complete nonsense, seen fly rods being used loads and also seen it being more effective than worm / maggot
@@krismcstay1325 read it again!!
Vince can you explain the difference between maggots and casters?
Michael Paul casters are the cocooned version of the maggot. That’s the stage between a maggot and a fly. Casters are excellent bait for lots of coarse fish.
I think the missed hook sets are from the way the drop shot is rigged, i always tie my drop shots straight to the line, instead of off the line with a leader. (At least in my head) that leader acts like a buffer and doesn’t give you the immediate power of having it tied straight on to the line.
You just need to yank at the right time right when hits hitting it
Great video, love seeing the trout attacking the bait. Aaron from New Zealand.
That was one of best under water and reaction Video thanks

my favorite bait is Berkley power bait..

Thank you!!! That's nuts! Yeah it's crazy to think corn would hurt them but powerbait wouldn't 😂 or marshmallows, bread or any other human food. Yet there are a ton of people in the comments here saying corn kills trout.
They're like me at Christmas dinner 😂
Also I'm doing a powerbait underwater video right now and I was shocked to find out that powerbait actually doesn't hurt the fish either. They can pretty much pass anything that can't be digested. It was designed to be biodegradable as well which makes sense. I wanted to research it first though and I can already see the comment storm coming 😂

@@EParkFishing Its not that corn kills trout, corn can kill any fish. Its only about size...a small fish that eats corn can get it stuck in its intestines. Thats the main reason.
