Great job on testing the S5 and comparing it to the A7iii camera. I've seen S5 footage with particular AF settings that improved the response time in 24p. Would love to see this pushed into the GH5 via a firmware update. But I suspect it needs a faster processor. Plus, they need something to entice people to buy the GH6 when/if that comes out. So I doubt we'll see it in the GH5.
I almost got a G9 but the full frame system of the S5 changed my mind. Very happy with it. Both are exceptional cameras for video. Came from a sony rx100m4!!
Soooooo what im getting is, the AF in the s5 is greatly improved and this is the production model, and to have somewhat of a consistent look with AF APS-C mode (for now) is best..I bought a G95 earlier this year and I love it, Might have to sell it , do some saving and pick this up for the holidays! thanks for the thorough video!!!

Flat, unsaturated image, or enhanced image with some color clipping in highlights.
Hi Max, if you can please compare the S5 & S1 in everyway please ? I’m S1 owner and now so hard to make up my mind to buy new S5 or buy used S1 to pair with my current S1 🤔
Honestly, we're comparing a camera that came out years ago with one that came out a few months again. The absolute minimum criteria should be that the S5 is at least 3 years better than the A73. Even parity isnt good enough. It should be an absolute demolition in favour of the S5 for it to be a good result in my humble oppinion.

Hey Max, did you manage to get your hands on the S5 recently? Has it improved?
Camera Conspiracies sent me here ! nice channel
Hi Max, it would be very interesting to see one of your great resolution tests with the S5 vs other 4K full frame options. I have yet to find info on whether it over samples, etc. for the full frame image. Looking forward to your next vid!
Over samples from 6k to 4k no lone skipping
Also does internal 6k! I have that video on my channel if ur interested in watching lol
This is going to be a great test Max!!
Max I was considering purchasing the Sony A7Siii, but the specs looked good on the S5. I want to use a camera only for music videos in the future when I get better. What is the difference between Full Frame and APS-C mode? It seemed like the 4K 24fps was much better for what I would be doing in the APS-C mode? Thank you for the great video!
Get xt4
Are the new algorithms going to the G9 and GH5?
The ALTSON EF-L Mount Converter enables the use of Canon EF-mount lenses on L-mount
mirrorless camera bodies, and maintains full lens performance, including autofocus in AF-S
mode, as well as in-camera correction and image stabilization technologies.
Why are they stuck with contrast detect AF? It didn't work before, and doesn't work now.
It allows for better image quality.
mikeoclimberMTB no one has actually praised Panasonic to have better image than Fuji, Canon or others. They need to fire whoever made decision to launch a new product without a working AF.
@@X99Zero www.dxomark.com/Cameras/ S1R is the highest rated full frame camera in the list.
Would love to see this pushed into the GH5 via a firmware update. But I suspect it needs a faster processor. Plus, they need something to entice people to buy the GH6 when/if that comes out. So I doubt we'll see it in the GH5.
Awesome work Max
Quite a big difference in white balance?
Great comparison.. Please help to compare 1080/24-120fps as well, who is better?
I hope the G9 gets this AF update.
I might buy a G9 if it does get the update
If that happens I'm getting the g9 instead
But you'll probably loose the unlimited record hack. That's why I haven't updated mine.
I m proud owner of a G9 and would dream of it cause with the 2.0 frimeware update + the insane OIS of G9 would be the perfect combo
S5 or xt4 for studio video?
max may i ask... lumix finally stepped away from the 4/3. makes a full frame camera that everybody was begging for. why does one test with aps-c crop? why would you do it on a shoot when you have a full frame options now? thank you. great video of course
very good clip to learn more about the S5 AF. Thank you!
Why Panasonic video looks red?
I don’t get why you used the apsc mode if one of the greates things about the S5 is that it is Full Frame
Because the AF is better in APS-C mode on the S5. Would have much preferred more testing in FF. If you want an APS-C camera, you could just buy one and save some money.
Its a nice review, but S5 corners look reddish, is this a camera bug, or something else? What about controls via WiFi or Bluetooth? Is there any lens (upon release) with O.I.S. ?
In those AF tests for example in Vlog, you should try with sunglasses, because many times in vacations you do were them. i noticed lot of change AF while wearing glasses
Since then firmware has been updated. S5 firmware is on 2.3 now. Not checked Sony yet. Do you have a test planned for new firmware? I know 2.0 improved focus, but 2.3 added Blackmagic Raw and more.
Hey Panasonic here’s a free advice: Swtich to phase detect AF!! You want to sell more cameras right?
How does the H264 422 footage compare to the R5 H265 422 which is uneditable on most systems? Same issue or does the H264 compression make it work okay
Great job Max!
Great job Panasonic. Now imagine Panasonic did this improvement for their initial S1, S1R, SH1.
I don't expect the G9 GH5 to get this AF via firmware... but it would be awesome if Panasonic did.
I wonder why Panasonic took so long to improve the AF for video to at least get close to the competition?
Great Job Max, thanks a lot!
can you please do a video on auto focus settings for sony a7iii ..... which settings are best
What would you recommend for a lens though for content creation?
I got it with kit lens 20-60mm. Upgraded from the a7sii with the tamron 17-28mm. Miss the wide angle but the stabilization on the s5 is superb!
@@nyrubin awesome and thank you!!
This sold me on the S5. I was weighing with the R6, which has better AF (right?) but an overheating problem. This AF is just fine. I am very likely going to buy this next.
Does it have a fan?
That's an excellent test, thank you! I'm curious how well or badly the S5 would perform with Leica or Sigma glass, since they are supposedly not supported for DFD focusing.
They support DFD just as well as native Panasonic lenses.
@@farren7254 Hey, didn't Sigma even get an update? Because I consider getting the 28-70 or maybe even 24-70 but I am not sure about AF. Will use it for 70% videos (DJ-mixes and talks) and 30% photos.
Why not compare against the A7Siii again? I don't quite get the specific purpose of comparing a 2020 camera to a 2018 camera...
They're both $2000.
Id like to see the S5 and A7Siii
Great video, looks good autofocus especially in aps-c 60fps even 24fps. But how does it work at low lights? the final version of the firmware is much better in full frame? can you publish some examples in low lights and with the new firmware? thanks. I would like to buy this camera what do you think, sorry my english i'm italian :)
I’d be interested to know what your speed and sensitivity settings are?
What is the color of that lamp? Panasonic is towards ping, Sony has some weird yellow-orange-pink transition and wall and skin is yellowish again. And Panasonic image seems somewhat more flat. To be honest I somewhat prefer Sony's colors which are likely not completely natural, but yellows are somewhat enhanced which I prefer to pink (yellow or pink is seen everywhere - one has yellow grass, other has dull brown, one has blue-green sky, one has blue-gray and whole image looks hazy (which is likely close to reality)
I'm actually not sure what I prefer. Flat, unsaturated image, or enhanced image with some color clipping in highlights.
The best test ever, great job.
did you get to test out full frame 1080? A lot of my stuff I still shoot in 1080 for turn around speed. Just curious how it compares to 4K APS-C mode?
Max releases a review... I drop everything and FOCUS! No pun intended. 🙃
Surely the IQ and IBIS DEMOLISHES the a7iii
Thanks a ton for this review ! There are many videos on UA-cam that just write off any of the Panasonic camera's autofocus outright !
The image seem much sharper on the sony. Also the light in the background by the wall has completely different color and exposure. What is going on with that?
In fact, in the entire video, the panasonic looks much softer. This is the only video I have noticed this big of a difference between the A7III and the S5
Great informational video the autofocus looks good, hopefully they can do a update on there other cameras! 💪🏾💪🏾👌🏽
What about about against the latest Sony?... I might upgrade in a year from now to FF from M43 if things don't change
Great comparison. Looks like panasonic wants to prove everyone wrong. They're getting very close! Huge improvement. Much better ibis too.
How about vlogging with the Sigma 16mm 1.4 in aps-c crop mode on the Panasonic S5? Is it the perfect camera for vlogging?
Please let us know the lenses u used..coz lumix af not perform well with many othe L mount lenses...
Very good video! Helped alot!
Hi, why at minute 3:10 and over, the panasonic image unclear and the colors dull and cold, compared to Sony?
Excellent, you have followed years, excellent video, thank you from the heart. I hope that you develop your channel
S5 footage looks little pink and pink shade also there..
is any colour problem it have ?.
Great work Max!
