Forgot one thing about the S5 - its dual native ISO. That's *the* reason why I'm saving for it to use it as a secondary camera to my MFT gear. Also, as a photographer, I do appreciate sensor shift high res photos.
Absolutely agree... If I do shift away or need to supplement my micro four thirds equipment, I would like to get an S5 and then perhaps even a Leica CL that uses the same amount lenses but is super compact..
I have the S5 and I Love it. If it had great autofocus and no crop in 4k 60, it would be the perfect camera for me. Can't find a better camera under $3000 than this and it only costs $1700 now. The only camera brand that supports two types of RAW, 5.9k BlackMagic and Pro Res.
Thanks for the video. It is exactly what I was looking for, since I'm trying to decide whether to buy the Panasonic S5 or the Sony A7c. I like the styling of the A7c better, although that might have something to do with the fact that I owned a Sony a6000 a number of years ago, and it has the same basic form-factor and rangefinder-style ergonomics. I also think the overall image that the Sony produces is nicer - for lack of a better way to describe things, the Sony seems to produce a creamier, richer and smoother image. On the other hand, I don't like the fact that when you plug in an external HDMI monitor on the Sony, you lose access to the camera's display LCD and whatever touch functions it has, including setting focus point. Based on your information, here is how I now think of the two cameras: If you do mostly photography, vlogging or occasional videography where you don't need minute control of all the camera's functions while shooting, then the Sony is your camera. If you do mostly videography and need good control of the camera's operating parameters and good stills photography capabilities are also important to you, then the S5 is your camera. There are three things you didn't touch upon that might be important. First, the S5 offers a 96MP high-res JPEG capture option. Second, in some markets, the S5 with kit lens sells for less than the Sony (In Canada, the S5 is $200 cheaper). Lastly, while the range of native L-mount lenses is limited, you can buy an adapter and use whatever third-party lenses fit the adapter.
One killer feature on the S5 that doesn't seem to get mentioned a lot is the Dual ISO. I can shoot at up to 6400 ISO in very low light and still get very clean footage. Also the headphone jack is Soooooo worth it. I've been using the Sony cameras for the last two years and when my S5 arrived it's been so nice to have a headphone jack. AF as Shane says is pretty good. Very usable. Colours are amazing on the S5 and V-Log is the full version not V-Log-Light giving 13-14 stops of dynamic range. Also when I use an external monitor I can output the 'on-screen-display' to the external monitor. I love being able to do that as with the Sony I was never sure I was actually recording and missed many a take because of it. With the Panasonic I can have the on screen display on my external monitor and have the border turn red when I'm recording, very helpful and reassuring.

Hi mate, awesome video as always. Btw 9:48 - as far as I know - A7C has a headphone jack too. If you would compare rolling shutter between those two - is there a huge difference? Cheers.

I am trying to decide between A7C with the Sony 24-105 and the S5 with the Lumix 24-105, for landscape and portrait photography, with sharpness and auto-focus accuracy (not speed) being the main criteria. Is the Sony 24-105 sharper than the Lumix 24-105, as the dxomark scores suggest ?
The big question is: Why hasn't Shane got all the specs and release date on the GH6 yet? :P Your videos always look great man, regardless of the gear. Maybe it has something to do with the operator?
Thanks Kevin. I can't wait to see what the GH6 has to offer mate. I am a big fan of MFT for a number of reasons. :). The S5 has grown on me a lot lately, I have to admit. I prefer using it over the more expensive Sony cameras I own as well for some reason. Thanks for the kind words. :)
Thank you, very useful comparision. I am a Pany boy (M43) but I really like that A7C. The small size is the main reason and FF the other. I will get one next year and use it for low light shooting.
Personally I’d suggest looking more into the s5 if your a pany boy. With the systems being so similar from your m4/3 camera, colour science being similar and general design philosophy will make the camera far more easy and simple to swap between the 2. I wouldn’t stress much about the size of the a7C, if you are buying a ff camera for low light, through out the idea of small size. You can’t beat physics, the lenses will be huge either way and the slightly larger size of the s5 will be slight more ergonomic which can actually make it feel lighter. Not to meantion the s5 is also rocking a more recent sensor, from what I’ve heard it handles low light a little better and it also has dual native iso, so you will get cleaner results from the s5. They’re both brilliant cameras but that’s just my 2c
@@jockturner1547 Thank you. I have decided not to go with the A7C in the end. This is because I purchased a GX9 and didn't like the experience I had with it (mostly the lack of joystick). So I prefer not to go that way.
@Jerimiah Cook that is true but the A7IV is in the S5’s spec range so it’s interesting to see that comparison too! Someone may see good autofocus and cheaper lenses as worth the extra $800 since the lenses will be cheaper in the long run, some may prefer the price and stabilization of the Panasonic as well as its pro features in video
Fantastic comparison. I would also consider the level of support (i.e. firmware updates) though this is about the companies rather than the cameras themselves. I think Panasonic tends to be more "generous" in this regard.
You mention the amount of lenses as a plus for the Sony in comparison to Panasonic. But you forget to mention that yes Sony has more options, but there's quite a bunch of other brands that produce L-mount lenses as well. There may not be as many for the L-mount, but all types of the most used sizes are represented now.
Just found your tech channel. Very impressive, intuitive and detailed to perfection. More than just musically talented, obviously more talents than imagined. Always impressed by the quality of the content 👏 again no disappointments .
I'm glad you mentioned lens selection, it's kind of crucial if you're going for AF. Also, if you plan to do photography as well, Sony is the clear winner...
I have both and i mostly shoot photos on the S5...no anti-aliasing filter, high res modes, great time lapse modes...and my vintage lenses just seem to work better....blasting away in auto everything at 10fps? yeah then the Sony is better.
@@robertwlittlejohn Sure, if you use manual lenses auto focus doesn't matter. I started out using vintage lenses for everything from landscapes to sports, but I appreciate AF when it comes to paid jobs like events and weddings.
@@santosovideo no the vintage lenses actually look better on the S5...no idea why, maybe the lack of antialias, it's definitely sharper when that's what I'm after. Nothing to do with autofocus as it's fine for stills on the S5, it just doesn't have the burst speed of the A7C. I'd never shoot paid work on the sony as I'm always shooting video as well, unless it's instructional/educational where you can let the AF do the work and 8 bit doesn't matter.
Thanks for the video, Shane. As an S5 user, I always get envious of the AF-C and lens selection on Sony cameras (heck, I even still own an a6500 and an a6000 when I need AF). Does the a7C allow one to use AF-S in video? Or is it only AF-C / manual focus when shooting video?
Do you feel you have a good handle on the S5’s focus system? I think there’s a video by Luca Bono (not sure I got his name right) about needing to confirm focus tracking by manually tapping the box over the intended subject. Seemed like a lot of the S-series users didn’t know about that. Not that it was a match for Sony’s AF-C, even then, but seemed to help a lot.

great list, thanks. And the awesome 20-60mm lens is a bargain!
Those are two lenses I haven't used on either system sorry. I do know the Sony GM 24-70 version 2 is supposed to be hard to beat.
Hi, it all sounds great, but, I don't shoot video! so in your opinion what camera is the best for still photography? Thanks again mate!
The big question is: Why hasn't Shane got all the specs and release date on the GH6 yet? :P
Your videos always look great man, regardless of the gear.
Excellent review. Kudos to your models, human and canine.
@@laurentyarp514 that’s fair! I also own a gx9. Brilliant little camera that one 😍
Could you do one on the S5 vs the A7IV? They seem a lot more matched this time around so it’d be very interesting
@@Alexrocks1253 with cashback here the s5 cost only like 1300 € :D
@@benediktmeyer that’s a great price especially considering the import tax usually raises all camera prices!
I like your glasses!! Can you send me the link? please
Fantastic comparison. I would also consider the level of support (i.e. firmware updates) though this is about the companies rather than the cameras themselves. I think Panasonic tends to be more "generous" in this regard.
Very informative video. Thank you!
I need help on deciding, is the S5 not having a low pass filter a problem for TVC production camera?
I am not too sure about that, but most of the Lumix range is Netflix approved (or they use the same sensors in the cameras that are not).
Thank you. Panasonic it is.
Bravo,ottimo video,mi hai chiarito tanti dubbi 👍
You mention the amount of lenses as a plus for the Sony in comparison to Panasonic. But you forget to mention that yes Sony has more options, but there's quite a bunch of other brands that produce L-mount lenses as well. There may not be as many for the L-mount, but all types of the most used sizes are represented now.
Absolutely. I just reviewed all of the S series primes. Since they are now fully available, it makes the L mount decision far easier.
Over 225 L mount lens r available now :)
I always love Lumix
Just found your tech channel. Very impressive, intuitive and detailed to perfection. More than just musically talented, obviously more talents than imagined. Always impressed by the quality of the content 👏 again no disappointments .
Thanks so much for the kind words, Cathy! :)
very fair video. nice one.
Dzięki. Pomogłeś mi. Wybieram S5. ;-)
which camera were you using to shoot this video?
The Panasonic S5 for the S5 part and the A7C for that part.
I'm glad you mentioned lens selection, it's kind of crucial if you're going for AF. Also, if you plan to do photography as well, Sony is the clear winner...
Well... the S5 is a good stills camera as well (notwithstanding the differences that Shane mentioned in the video).
I hope this video is helpful if you are deciding between these two cameras!

I have the Sony A7C. How did you set the picture profile on the Sony camera so it looks more like film rather than live (like the news or a soap opera)?
@@sarajennfunvideos208 That's the no picture profile. I am using Auto White Balance as well. No tricks, I just hit record in Aperture priority mode. :)
Lens of lumix is more expensive than sony
Is that woman in the video that chick from MAFS?... I can’t think what’s her name is atm... btw I just purchased the A7C last night in the Black Friday Sales from JB... the website says I should receive the camera in January... gawd I hope not.
性价比最高的全画幅相机
Yes, Sony is the one!
The choice is easy, Lumix S5 all day long. Had both, only have the S5 now. Sony feels like a cheap Chinese knock off, build quality and grip are awful, missing a front control wheel, EVF is a joke, and menus are probably the worst around, you won't enjoy it as a creative joy to use.
