In this video, Terence McKenna explains his theory behind why the universe keeps getting more complex (Novelty Theory). This audio is from Terence McKenna's "Final Interview" in 1998.
Terence Kemp McKenna (November 16, 1946 - April 3, 2000) was an American ethnobotanist and mystic who advocated the responsible use of naturally occurring psychedelic plants. He spoke and wrote about a variety of subjects, including psychedelic drugs, plant-based entheogens, shamanism, metaphysics, alchemy, language, philosophy, culture, technology, ethnomycology, environmentalism, and the theoretical origins of human consciousness.
McKenna formulated a concept about the nature of time based on fractal patterns he claimed to have discovered in the I Ching, which he called novelty theory, proposing that this predicted the end of time, and a transition of consciousness in the year 2012. His promotion of novelty theory and its connection to the Maya calendar is credited as one of the factors leading to the widespread beliefs about the 2012 phenomenon.

@@EB-73- Back in the 80s as a young person I used psychedelics as a party drug but in the back of my brain I realized the Indians(for example) used something similar during religious ceremonies. Those days are long gone but the memories remain, now as I've went down the relationship of psychedelics and humans I have those experiences to draw from. I've also learned that some monks can achieve the same effect through intense meditation without them. I also think modern meds, poor diet(to name a few) has dulled peoples senses beyond rational thought, the opposite of psychedelics. Lastly, I can't help but think this has all happened before.

@@bluefish4999 Huge ups for sharing your story. I'm in agreeance on most points, and have some similar tales of my own, despite being a much younger man.
Depending on how far you want to go with that last thought, I agree completely. In one respect, I think we all have to admit nearly everything has happened before. As much as we love to think otherwise, as individuals, someone else has probably already lived every part of your life, thought every thought in your head. Maybe not all one person, or all at the same time, but the things we take for granted as being 'uniquely our own' really aren't ever ours as much as we think they are.
On the other hand, if you're more referring to the progression of time, one has to wonder, if the universe 'banged' out of nothing, and the universe is supposedly eventually going to reduce itself to nothing, maybe the nothing the universe banged out of is the same nothing the universe is collapsing into. No way to even challenge the concept really, with modern science, but in some respects it definitely does stand to reason.
And in a hypothetical third case, we're probably not the only ones it's happening to. For the science minded, we base so much on the back of darwinian theory, but never extrapolate the concept to higher levels? To think we are the only planet with life is very sort of middle ages thinking, especially when you frame it through the ever so popular lens of evolution. The 'fact' that this is what 'luck of the draw' looks like, is purely subjective, and entirely happenstancial. To make the assumption that there's no other species that has or is currently going through the same processes, is a rather fanciful thought if nothing more.

This video perfectly aligns with the recency bias, where people overemphasize the importance of recent events while underestimating historical context. You touched on how people no longer discuss the fall of the Soviet Union, a monumental event in history that was once unimaginable. I see the same thing happening in my friend’s life, where they constantly focus on today’s challenges, forgetting the immense transformations they’ve already overcome. I'm not a fan. The guy expanded his mind, blurring the boundaries of reality, and it shows. He's quite open about his distorted perceptions. He repeatedly explains how he took something to be something else or saw something different. That doesn't make it so. Case in point, that's not what novelty is. The law of entropy still applies. Religions didn't sense an apocalyptic end, they prophesied one. These points may seem unimportant in themselves, but it's all like that, and those drugs are known to do that. Were this a friend, relaying his experiences on LSD, I would forgive them such blurryness and factual longitude. I'd even engage with them in appreciating the profound insights they found in their psychedelic experience. I wouldn't jot it all down, submit it to a philosophical journal and expect to be taken seriously. It's way to blurry for that. You can't be given the benefit of the doubt in philosophical enquiry. Architects build upon foundations and make structural considerations based on known and tested parameters. Artists, like the very talented artist illustrating this, convey imagery, considering palletes and style, using imagination and guesses. Terrence Mckenna was certainly an artist, but can in no way be considered an architect of anything.

How do you question or refute something so vague and insubstantial as these beliefs? All that's left is to point out how vague, ill defined and insubstantial it is. It's a 'what if' based on no material observations. No observable facts. Nothing but a psychedelic experience that allowed him to distort his perceptions, blur the lines of cold hard scientific observations and dictionary definitions, and allowed him to be OK with it. I didn't take the same mind altering substances as him, and I still need there to at least be some connection to material reality, reproducability and dictionary definitions. These are fuzzy musings with cosmic potential, but no evidence, no handles on reality and no practical application. Nothing more.

I don’t think 2012 was the end, but the end of something and the beginning of an end. He said novelty spiked and then flat lined. Facebook went mobile in 2012. At your fingertips 24/7 and carried with us every where. The way that social media and smart phones are changing our brains, our grey matter... it's concerning. The mental health crisis and addiction to social media... it was created to become just that. I think maybe that's what Terrance saw. I definitely could be wrong, but I feel it. I know what my life was like before the world was at my fingertips. It was better. And it's slowly returning since having quit it.

I remember the first time I had taken mushrooms. It was in February of 2013, my junior year in college, and the world was still there. I remember driving around the city with my friends that day. It was a cold day, a lot of pollution in the air from the inversion. People were fueling up their cars at gas stations, walking out of liquor stores, and staring at their phones as they walked down the streets. I remember observing this and thinking, the world didn't end in 2012, but maybe that was the year of no return for humans. As if we had crossed some sort of line. A dependency on fossil fuels and internet. That if you took those out of the equation, we would be done for.
Anyway, that idea stuck with me for years. I want to remain optimistic for human civilization, but Terence was right, things have only gotten weirder. To a point where I find myself talking about how weird the world is all the time to my girlfriend and friends. It's a very common topic now.

You can still remain optimistic for humanity, you just have to change the lens you are observing it with.
Don’t equate weird and turbulent with bad. Embrace the reality, which is that most people are resistant to change. As humans get closer and closer to the next leap in evolution- expect growing pains. The crazier times get is just the visual evidence of how much closer we are to something beyond ourselves.
Humanity isn’t lost- humanity is shifting into a new plane of existence.

Duh, when skeptics say that the US will not have the grid capacity to support EV vehicles, they are not adding any perception to any of what they say because they are focused on the now, just one very small point in that will all and ever be. When people who have had a psychedelic experience and understood it for what it was they get everything and anything of all that ever was and all that will ever be. The third eye opens and you see all. This is why Jim Morrison named his band The Doors from the book The Doors of Perception. Humans who have never had a psychedelic experience do not have any perception on anything, and when you perceive consciousness as a soul and not of the energy of the universe manifesting itself to explore the anything and everything that is out there or will be out there, you are not perceiving yourself as the focal point of everything that is happening or that has ever happened but just what you are perceiving yourself to be you at small one point in the everything that is and will ever be.

This theory aligns well with my practice in zen Buddhism. When the mind has been stilled after the practice of meditation over many years, or especially in a meditation retreat, the nature of reality is perceived directly. From the empty mind all kinds of things emerge and the beauty of it all unfolding is clearly seen. To directly experience this, come to meditation with a straight posture, and a mind ready to let go of things that are unnecessary or hinderances. When all mental happenings are quieted, a different form of knowing is developed and we can perceive things as they truly are.

what an amazing articulation. the illustration was fantastic too.
2024 now, i have definitely been experiencing the novelty increasing since 2012. i feel like it really started gearing up in 2001, 9/11. So awe inspiring to see goalposts now reflexively shift in the night. Is social media a driving force or is it the resultant output, or is it both at the same time.
in order to cope with the wierdness i spent 2020-2023 doing a deep dive into buddhist practice and some dmt work. i have an acceptance of it all now, it doesn’t bother me, but it does fascinate. fellow travellers, the dmt is only as good as your own mental incisiveness; sharpen your instruments well! psychedelic experience clears the mist, but where you are standing influences greatly the view.
i am very grateful to be a witness to interesting times, but realize too that interesting times happen in every life regardless of epoch, its how you interpret experience that lifts the veil.

Reality is stratified. While his timing is off, he is right about that being trivial. Because of the acceleration of complexity and novelty, as he says, we get a deeply stratified outcome where people disperse about the multiverse, many going to lowly dimensions, while those who were mindful of the process and elevated themselves get their Just reward and help others to do likewise. This acceleration results in transdimensional beings going on journeys beyond, while vulnerable basic others are taken to realms of suffering in greater numbers than the snatchers currently acquire. The irony is that basic people need protection, but duality generates the enemies and the vulnerabilities; when we go beyond duality, the enemies disappear. While we still need to avoid them here to live smoothly, the higher dimensions serve as their own refuge free from predators unable to penetrate the vibrational barriers until they are worthy and also on the Path of Return. In the end, the Law of Fairness resolves everything....

This is so interesting. He did this talk in the 90's...that was my mid 20's to mid 30's and time WAS speeding up! I remember my grandparents telling me how time goes so much faster the older that you get, but I knew in my heart that it wasn't just that it seemed faster only to me while I got older...especially since covid! That completely effed up what I call the 'time/space continuum (to anyone who listen) I knew it! Weekdays actually drag on longer than they should, but weeks are a little faster, and the months and years are FLYING by at the speed of light! THAT canNOT just be because I am living it in my 50's now, because talk to my kids all the time and they point out the same thing...and they are only in their 20's. Something universal is happening to time. I am not a scientist, so I don't know what it is, but it IS something. Something changed at the beginning of this century and it has increased its speed in the first 24 years of it.

When computers become smarter than us and are everywhere then what? They'll be able to read us like a book and manipulate the weaker among us easily. Read Daniel 12 and Matthew , Mark, and Luke where the parable of the fig tree is told. This "fig tree" generation (1948) shall not pass until all of these things have taken place. The fig tree is Israel and Israel bloomed again in 1948. The generation born in 1948 is called the fig tree generation and although many many of them will perish younger than a full life a few will be alive for the human life span of ~120 years. The fig tree generation only needs to be alive to see the end to fulfill all of the verses. And they will see the end. This is inevitable.

We must be vibing, I've been thinking about his omega point idea recently. It's one of the most fun big picture ideas I have ever heard. Reminds me of Robert Monroe's books on astral projection, he goes to some level where transcended cultures of self-aware beings cycle back through some center point of the universe, bringing their transformation back as yummies for the all being. It's been 20 years since I read those, pretty fuzzy on the details. Certainly makes me wonder about potential design elements in the universe, that we really are taking part in something grand and sacred, despite how ugly it can be. McKenna's idea does a better job of explaining why that stuff is happening than a simple "God's will" idea. It's like, sure, but what is the shape and texture of that will? What's the story?

Consciousness. If you could control the energy around and inside of you, you can experience anything without leaving the farm so to speak. Really. People will figure this out someday. We may already have and if so, we'll see the world and as it really is someday. The energy around us that we absorb from our environment can be manipulated using science. Energy can cause our five senses to experience any "virtual" reality. Matter is not there unless you are looking. This is science.

Terrance McKenna seems like a good guy, so not hating- but his statement about complexity and thermodynamics is clearly based upon an incomplete understanding of the concept. I think a better way to look at it is that the universe’s “goal” is to turn every quantum of matter into heat (i.e. the most useless and disorganized form). So by creating highly complex creatures, it is actually achieving this goal in the long run. Highly complex organisms (like us humans) create significantly more heat than all of our constituent atoms would on their own. For that reason, to me, it makes perfect sense why complexity would evolve. It aligns perfectly with the goal of the universe- to turn everything into heat.

    • @erawanpencil
      @erawanpencil 4 місяці тому +5

I think this is correct... I can't remember who said it but it was something along the lines of if you shine a light on a rock long enough (the sun on the earth), thermodynamics/entropy necessarily and unsurprisingly would engender 'life' to accelerate the heat. Though I do wonder if temperature is more perspective-dependent than we realize. Entropy has a subtle dependence on what initial conditions the observer chooses to define, and in some sense, the second law could be 'transcended' once all those perspective/observational points necessarily unify (such as in the remote, rarefied future, when there's just photons and all black holes have evaporated). Cyclic imaginary time is (the inverse of) temperature. 'Heat' is one of the most coarse-grained (amorphous) quantifiable observable we have, so I wonder if we're selling our cosmology and physics short by reducing all of our ontology and metaphysics to mere temperature.

You trip so hard that you don’t even realize you took Datura. You forget, because your memories are imaginary. On Datura, you can have conversations with friends you knew from high school. You might sit there for two hours having a conversation with this good friend of yours, only to realize later that you never knew this person, and they were never in your room. You were just talking to the wall, hallucinating an entire human being with whom you believed you had an intelligent conversation.
Now, people might say, "Oh, Leo, that’s crazy, that’s pretty far out there." But all that shows is hallucinations, right? No, you misunderstand. I am that hallucination. Right now, you are hallucinating my entire body and voice. I am just your mind talking to you. You’re hallucinating me right now. You hallucinated all my videos. You know, I warned you at the beginning. Do you really want to know what reality is?
This is the highest teaching. I’m giving you my highest teaching. It took me over 15 years of reading, studying, thousands of hours of contemplation, meditation, going to retreats, doing powerful psychedelics, racking my mind to understand all of this, to figure it out.
Here it is: my highest teaching. Number one, you are God, and there is nothing but God, and you are all alone. That’s number one. Number two, everything is imaginary. There is nothing but imagination. God is infinite consciousness-infinitely intelligent, infinitely powerful, unlimited. It is also infinitely Terrence Mckenna and infinitely loving.

But then as you fully let go and the death occurs the next Split Second you're so relieved. It's like your entire life was this giant thousand pound weight wrapped around your shoulders just tons and tons of weight and then all of it was just lifted in a split second and you realize that you're untouchable and that you're Immortal and that nothing could ever disturb you again. It's complete peace just utter peace and joy and profundity. The beauty of it is Indescribable.

God is the faceless, the boundless and the infinite. “We” are the products of infinity being split into the finite and shrouded in the veil of forgetfulness. I believe this is all done to know what I AM. If God is faceless, boundless, and infinite, what is God? I do not know. So the only thing to do is to create and observe.
