Let's Model GAME ASSETS (part 1) in 10 MINUTES - Blender 2.9 - Ep. 41

  • Hello everyone! This is the 10 Minute Modeling Challenge but this is the start of a little mini-series for a few episodes. I model game environment objects for 10 minutes and in the bonus material I also import those assets into Unity 2020.1 and begin to make a game. The miniseries may span 3-5 episodes within 10 Minute Modeling Challenge and next week I'll add a hero, then enemies, and other elements. I'll animate and implement those into the game in the bonus material each week. I expect the episodes to be about 30-45 minutes long each :)

I've been modeling in Blender since about 2015 but more recently in the past couple of years. I've been making games and assets in Unity since 2011 and I'm currently working on a multiplayer RTS game that I'll be happy to announce later this year.
I use a Canon Lumix GH5 camera to record my videos with the Olympus 17mm F1.2 lens as well as the Laowa F2.0 7.5mm compact dreamer lens. Sometimes I also use a GoPro Hero 8, a Insta360 One X and a Sony rx100 mark vii. For audio I use a Rode NTG shotgun microphone connected to a RME Fireface UFX II sound card.
Thanks a lot for watching and sharing my videos :)

Awesome tutorials, man.. simple, fun, engaging, and very useful for just starting with blender & unity. I got my son (12) to follow your tutorials (just starting to learn blender & unity) and he’s having a blast. I do have to help him a little bit here and there, but otherwise he’s managing to follow your tutorial pretty easily. One suggestion I wanted to make in this regards though: when my son gets stuck following your videos is typically because of a few things that you had omitted in your videos: like, the bool tools add-on, or loop tools add-on etc which you perhaps installed a while back in your earlier videos and forgot about them, then use them in later videos without mentioning that these tools don’t come installed with blender out of the box. Or if you’re using features only available on newer version of Blender etc. My son doesn’t follow the videos in the order you released them necessarily, so when he follows the ones later in your chronological sequence he may come across some features that you don’t cover in a video that perhaps were covered in earlier videos (like what add-ons you have installed or how to setup the color swatch material etc). Perhaps if you could make a video specifically about how to get your setup ready (colors, add-ons etc) and then mention that video at the beginning of every new video, it would help the beginners who otherwise may get stuck, not knowing why a certain key combination doesn't do what your particular key combination does etc). You may even add a section in the video description itemizing the concepts you’d need to know or the setup you have to have in order to be able to follow a given video. Once again, you're doing a great job! Keep going!

I was in the process of learning Unity a few years ago, and was starting to get pretty good at it. I got into Blender to make Unity assets, but I found it so fascinating that I never went back. Now a lot of what you were saying was familiar to me ("prefabs," "SerializedField," etc.), though I have very little memory of what most of it means.

Maybe do some bad guys, a jumping pad/trampoline, a cannon... Some Ladders?
Maybe a bird you can fly on to get to the flying city portion of the game, and a dolphin you can ride on to get to the underwater zone!? 😉

You know, you need to model that TOY and make some sort of game out of it. ;)

If you are designing your rocks, then you use proportional editing to make it have a irregular shape, but if you do that, then the quads you started with are distorded in a way that the quad changes in 2 non-coplanar triangles with of course shading artifacts. Is there a way to propertionally edit this while keeping it a quad or while keeping the 2 triangles of the quad coplanar ?

That's a good question. I know afterwards you can go back and flatten the quads, but being able to not get bad quads in the first place would be nice.

Great video! Is there a way to keep the shiny edges that you have in blender when you transfer over to Unity? I think they aesthetic of the shiny edges is very nice and it's a shame to lose it.

I've been banging my head at trying to do this the past 2 weeks - and despite looking through most videos I can't find anything..
