Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture. With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

Not saying them other colors are much better but jeez, Deere and Harley are two companies that just want their customers to suffer. You can only get their parts and service from them and pay their ridiculous costs. Or you can be broke down and never get anything done. You'd almost think people would catch on 🤷

Next time on "Millennial Famer": Jim replaces Zack's phone ring tones with the 4640 error beep. Becky lets Zack know that he still hasn't cleaned up the "bin mess" in the yard and he needs to get on that. Zack's father calls to say the digger is working great and has no electrical issues and hopes Zack's day is going well. Police are called when Zack has a breakdown at the local super market about food he wants to get but can't because it's on row 12.

As a retired engineer I have a few thoughts; first, one bad sensor shouldn’t be able to stop the whole operation. You should be able to take that sensor “ out of scan “ and continue planting one less row or there may be a problem with the program itself. Secondly, it appears the sensors/transducers may not be heavy built enough to withstand the environment they’re in-- heat or vibration. I plant and sell an acre of sweet corn every year using my 2 row 3pt Ford 309 planter. No GPS. No sensor. Works great. Good luck.

  • @Cragified

I would not be surprised with the rain+wind it got exposed to if a weatherpacking failed in a connector somewhere and there is some nice blue and green crusties causing a voltage drop to ground that's confusing the sensors. That 5V undervolt is a great indicator of it. Or a wire somewhere got damaged in the tornado, perhaps internally without insulation and there is an intermittent connection. And hunting that down takes time and isolation. And time... time is certainly not on your side :(

I agree - this is exactly what it sounds like. This type of thing is also likely to be intermittent which also takes longer to troubleshoot. A trouble code "connector 42 is intermittent on red-white striped wire" would be easier to find.

And they need to be planting right now not spending days and days isolating connections and looking for faults.

I'm not sure how much of a pain it is to swap sensors from row to row but I'd start switching those one at a time to see if any of those make the problem move. If any do make it move replace that one and pray. If the problem doesn't move with any of that, you may have a bad motor or the wiring has an issue somewhere. Zack wiring for the sensors on the planter heads are a 5 v system per another video while the planter was in diagnostic. This tells me that it's a very low current system. The terminals in the plugs need to be pristine clean and I'd bed them with dielectric silicone grease. Wiring down the frame of the planter I assume at all bundled together. This can cause a huge issue with sensor wiring. For instance say you seed motor wiring is laying next to down pressure sensor wiring eletrical noise can cross over from your seed motor wiring into your down pressure wiring causing problems. A good sensor wire either isolated from high current wires or have what they call a drain wire constructed like this, power wire, sensor wire, voltage return wire ( some people call it the ground) all wrapped in a foil or foil with a bare wire grounded to the frame. There's alot more but this is a good start.

That planter would do my head in. I personally run a 12 Harvest International, vset2 meters, Agleader downforce, and drives. Its a really good system, sure it throws the odd issue but nothing that shuts it down. Load cell might play up, set that row to match its opposite one and carry on. Motors never ever give trouble. Occasionally it will share the cotter pin on the drive. Still a 5 min in field fix. The best part- its the only one in New Zealand like it. I have no dealer support apart from agleader and carry my own spares. Id 100 recommend looking into it. This year we’re building an 8 row kinze/agleader, hopefully it proves as good

I agree with some on here. With all the moisture y'all have experienced this year and the impact that planter took from the roof falling on it while rain was being driven at 100 mph, I bet connections have corroded or sensors got waterlogged. With the impact and all the movement that planter makes I also wouldn't put it past a pinched or partially separated conductor somewhere that makes intermittent contact which would involve a continuity test on every conductor. You could do that with a multimeter. I would definitely get some electronic contact cleaner and some dielectric grease unplug every wire and sensor and clean the connections and coat them. You could always bypass in parallel the bad sensor with a few wires from a sensor that is working next to it. The computer will not know the difference. All it sees are connections. The downside is if it does stop planting you won't know. They should install a system or diagnostic that lets you hook directly to that one row and run through all the motors, sensors, belts etc. Good luck.

I am so glad I found your channel. I grew up on a small farm on the eastern side of Wisconsin. I used to help my Dad with planting corn for many years. Nothing as sophisticated as what you have. I think we planted 6 rows at a time. My Dad ran the tractor with the planter and I ran the truck with the seed bags and fertilizer. After Dad would fill up on both I would drive the truck down the lane to the next fill up spot. Then I’d lay out on the bags and work on my farmer tan. My Dad passed away last Nov. but watching your videos brings back so many good memories. Thank you for sharing your farmers life. Blessings to you and your family

I'd love to find the engineer's dad that came up with electronic sensors and hand him a couple boxes of Trogans. Sometimes adding electronics to things isn't the best idea.

It doesn't matter what color it is. They are all great when they work. And they all suck when they don't

In theory, all these electronics are supposed to increase efficiency, provide better and more even seed placement and increase yields and productivity. However, that is a theory only. These new planters are simply getting too sophisticated with computer technology and the productivity is suffering greatly. We need to go back to simple mechanical drive. Even going slower through the field, there would be no stopping due to electronic issues. Can you tell I hate computers, and the added problems they often bring to the table? We are simply too dependant on computers! Period!!!!!

amen to that from someone who has worked on and with electronics for 20+ years, best thing is to stay away from tech as much as possible cause it ALWAYS will fail and fail when you need it most.

Its not just the complexity is thats the problem its the software thats a bigger issue. JD doesnt want farmers fixing anything. They want you paying them. Theres no reason even if its throwing so codes you shouldnt be able to just bypass and continue. Thats fully on JD's bad behavior. They fight Right to Repair very hard and throw tons of money at making sure it doesnt get put into law

Electronics can be great but the must never fail in a way that stops the primary purpose of the thing. I fight this every single day for you. - software dev

Our 30 year old seeder is still working like a clock every time we pull it out of the shed. Just need some grease, put seed in, do the adjustments and go to field.

Zack I Feel Your Pain,,, and the planters I used were 45 years older,, I wasted more seed and could only do 4 rows at a time.... Stay True Bud,, It will work out,, somehow, someway, ,,lol
