- Dave Abbruzzese joined Pearl Jam in 1991 and played a crucial role in the band's early years, contributing to albums like "Vs." (1993) and "Vitalogy" (1994). However, he was dismissed from the band in 1994. Dave remains a notable figure in the history of Pearl Jam.
Dave shares his journey, recounting his audition and relocation from Texas to Seattle to join Pearl Jam, his initial tours, his strained relationship with Eddie Vedder, his stint with Guns N' Roses where he joined and subsequently left, his life after Pearl Jam, his induction into the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame, and other experiences.

Hello everyone! David Abbruzzese here... I want to let you know that I am aware of the challenging aspects of listening to some of this podcast. I had no idea that the audio was not fully coming across. It was a windy day and the microphone was having trouble dealing with the background noises.
As for what some have voiced opinions about... Talking to a little face on a phone isnt a natural way to communicate for me. I wear glasses and without them, I can't see the interviewer clearly. Thats why i dont look into the camera comfortably. My incessant cough is the tail end of a wicked chest cold that was going around in my circle. The mic cutting in and out and the occasion coughs are annoying to me too! I encourage you to read the comments below because I will be attempting to clarify any of my statements that are unintelligible or that dropped out.
As for my laid back nature and the choice i made to have a bite to eat while doing a podcast interview? I have paid my dues and at this point in my life and career, I am not going to be something that I am not. I was hungry and at a fantastic Italian coffee shop. The idea of talking about these topics isn't something that I can prepare for, so i just let the truth be told.
Thats easier to do if I don't think about the fact that you're going to be listening!
30 years ago. Wow. It might seem easy to go back to that point in time, but the truth of the matter is that my Pearl Jam experience, although certainly a meaningful and impactful part of my life, is but a small part of my story. I am honored that so many are still interested and curious about me and that version of the band. To be a part of the soundtrack of so many lives is something that I am very proud of. I appreciate you and wish you all the best. Enjoy the music. D
Dave, I am not a drummer but put you and your talent in such high regard. All the best to you!
Great interview, thank you Dave!
Hey Dave the Early Mid 90's was a Time like No other! Esp. w/ You Drumming in Pearl Jam! The Parties ,the Women and the Acid Trips were like No other Time in History. I been a Drummer since 1983 and I must say Pearl Jam in New Orleans in 2016 was my Retirement Party!. Check this Out! I smoked a Joint in the Parking Lot in front of a under-cover cop. He Turned on his lights 10 yards in Front of me. Tripped Me Out He Leaves w/ Lights on. I grabbed my Egg Shaker snook it in the Concert and Un-Officially played Percussion w/ Pearl Jam. I was Hi and had the Time of my Life!! New Orleans 2016.Today I'm Rocking a RMV Drumset 20,10, 14 Fl w/ Gretsch Bell Brass 3mm. Things are Rockin in the Studio. I Love You Brother! Thanks for the Memories , Good Times and Drumming Videos. Peace Out Jonathan Richard
You should be very proud of those PJ years. I have a 12 year old daughter who loves listening to Rearviewmirror and especially the drum finale where you toss the drumsticks at the end of the mix. The music lives on...✌️
I appreciate your talent so much just hope you realize you have amazing talent and drumming capabilities. You are a amazing role model.
He was the best drummer for Pearl Jam’s sound. It was never the same after he left
I agree!
Nah Jack Irons was peak. His drumming on No Code is insane.
Ed had true 'angst'. Wasn't playing 😂
Guy needs to get over it
Exactly!
I've followed pj for 20 years and the only views I continue to watch are from 91-94. Thanks Dave!!
easily the greatest slight ever by the RRHOF and by the band. dave was the driving force behind pearl jam when they had their rise to fame. that is simply undeniable. those live shows 91-94 are what got so many people to love pearl jam. it's the biggest joke in the world that dave wasn't included.
🙌
We were shocked he wasn’t included, totally agree with everything you said.🎧
It was the Hall's decison, not the band. It's well documented. Original and current drummer only. Was it fair? no, but that's how it works.
Eddie was behind it. Short man syndrome
No f*cking way. With the amount of first-class inductions Eddie has done for the Rock and roll Hall of Fame clearly they had the clout to make him also get inducted.@@sashlipinski7034
Dave is the reason the Unplugged show was as good as it was! Total Masterclass on how to play in that setting! Dave by far and I mean by far was the best drummer PearlJam ever had and the bands music was never the same since! Hats off to you Mr. Abbruzzese! And an amazing interview! Keep up the great work! 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Krusen man, Krusen.
No disrespect to any of the other drummers who have sat for PJ but Dave is hands down my favorite. I remember being 16 and standing in line at midnight for VS to be sold. From the first track when those drums kicked in, you could tell that album was going to be different. It's still my favorite PJ album because of the drums.
Yes! Dave had the groove, feel and power.
Dave also had the independence, syncopation and dynamics. Solid time, Linear fills, and he wasn’t a little bitch like that dude that sometimes was standing in front of him with LVS.
What is LVS? Lead vocal something??@@latentsea
Me too. I love the drums on VS. I was 13 when that album came out, first album I ever bought on CD. I learning drums at school, and Set up a kit made if different size Rubbermaid tubs at home and learned it front to back.
@@JasonKavetis Lead Vocalist Syndrome
My favourite PJ drummer he was so good on the MTV unplugged performance, Porch was amazing!
Neil Peart was a fan of your drumming. He wrote this in his book.
and also of Matt Cameron's drumming.
Yes
He was a perfect fit for Pearl Jam,the other drummers didn't fit their style.
Definitely the best they ever had. The comments on how the energy left the band’s albums after he was fired are absolutely true. I’ve seen them a number of times after the sacking and the songs off Vs and Vitalogy weren’t the same. Awesome drummer!
What is undeniable for me is that the Pearl Jam sound was never the same again after Dave left, and that era of Pearl Jam never returned. I have been in bands with friends and the magic that is created by a unit is untouchable. We will never truly know what was cooking in the minds of everyone when these decisions were made, but at least the best of Pearl Jam has been immortalized in a few albums, and nothing can take that away from Dave
Truly a forgotten hero of the grunge era!!! So cool that you got him to do this interview!
He’s always been one of my favorite drummers. Such a good guy!
He isn't forgotten. Every YT video of PJ has tons of comments regarding him. All true fans miss him.
He’s a great man. Not egotistical at all, great drummer. Keep it up man you’re awesome.
I was amazed at the drumming the first time I heard PJ. As soon as Dave left, I never listened to PJ again. His drumming was mind blowing to me, the fills the hi-hats on the live version of “Daughter”. Amazing drummer.
This interview answered sooo many questions I have had for a lot of years. I hope Axl see's it. Hell I hope Jeff and Mike see it.
This is the one big black mark Eddie has in his background. How he treated Dave. Had Stone do the dirty work to such a nice guy. Dave deserved much better.
there are always two sides of the story... ;-)
Stone was in charge back then.
@@dolcegarbo46 since Vitalogy, Vedder its the owner of the band. You can tell even by the music. He started to play guitar, write music and said "Fuck U guys. I am the owner. You are my sesionista arreglements from now on."
@@christianp4500riiiiight. The HOF stuff kind of gives it away though.
GO is one of my fave PJ songs. Ridiculous drumming on that and he wrote the riff. Dave’s a beauty.
He made the songs from "Ten" sound even better live.
What an absolute gift to the planet earth Dave Abbruzzese is! A true Renaissance Man. Still growing in all directions, No Ego at all. Not a vindictive person, this video has lessons of life for not only rock & roll fans, or drummers, this recording has lessons of Life far more valuable than anything PJ gave us. Love you Dave. Thanks RNRCS.
Well said, thank you! 🙏
30 years since Pearl Jam, but it's because of what Dave played on those albums/shows, that this time difference has become irrelevant. When you make something great, it remains great. No amount of time can diminish it. One of the best drummers I've ever seen - only once, Brixton Academy 1993 - but such a class act.
I never enjoyed the totality of the Pearl Jam sound after Vitalogy. Dave’s drumming on Vs. was the best mix of swinging funky rock/prog improvisation /unpredictability. IMO Dave was a force that helped make them exciting and funky in the beginning of the band’s development. The band’s groove never felt quite as robust after his departure. He’s a marvelous drummer🙏🙌
Vs and Vitalogy are the best PJ albums. Because of Dave
One of the best drummers
Dave’s hi hat work changed the way drummers played. Instead of playing Tom fills, he did this hi hat stuff that was never seen before and obviously influenced the gospel and hip hop scene. He deserves his recognition for inspiring that shift. It happened on the first SNL performance.
Yes
I have one of his drum sticks with my blood on it!!! It slipped out of his hand at one of the two night stands in Saint Louis with RHCP and Smashing Pumpkins! I saw a flash of light under the lights and next thing I knew a drumstick went through my upper lip! We saw the whole band when I got back from the ER and Eddie and the rest of them game me big hugs! Dave wasn’t there at that moment but when he found out what happened he sent me a letter in that mail with a sincere apology. He felt terrible, but I was really impressed that her cared enough to send me the letter, which I can’t find anymore, unfortunately. 😢
I was there at that show!
Massive influence. Amazing drummer.
Can’t WAIT to See MORE of DAVE!!!! The World is A Better Place when YOU’RE Behind the Kit!!!!!!🔥🔥🔥
Dave is damn sure my favorite PJ drummer. His energy is incredible.
Dave is so honest and open about everything here. I love this guy! My favorite drummer!
👍 One of my favorites too!
He seems like such a nice guy. What a bitch ass move for Eddie Vedder to not even have a conversation with him about his "dismissal." Definitely sobers me up to who the members of Pearl Jam really were in the early 90s.
Dave, I'm sorry for what happened to you. You deserve the best. Rock on.
Great interview Dave, love your stories. Your Angus story reminded me of my story about my first time to interact with rock gods (to be) and it’s u brother! I was a senior in high school 1992 in Detroit and there to see the peppers and pumpkins, we never heard of pearl jam lol. After that show pearl jam was our band for life…
I’d been to plenty of kiss, ozzy & maiden shows growing up, but only in large arenas. This was my first time to actually be so close to a band on stage and it blew my mind. To top it off being in the pit and moshing was like I’ve found my people…
So actually Eddie was my first touching as he did a stage dive and got his sweaty ass shirt all over my face while kicking me with his doc martins.
Next was u, the bathrooms were in the basement and I was walking up the stairs as you were coming down and I’m holding a drum stick that u tossed out. U stopped me and was like dude u got my drum stick, how cool! I’m like really that was u on stage? You’re like yeah, then I say u can just walk around here without security and u say nobody knows who we are yet. I still have the stick and that night changed my life forever. Thank u sir!
No lie....I haven't listened to any post-Dave PJ. I still LOVE everything he played on. HIS DRUMMING BUILT THAT BAND. The "first Dave", who played on Ten, laid down draggy, too slow rhythms. Hence why Dave A played ALL THE TEN SONGS INFINITELY SUPERIOR to Dave K.
If you read this Dave, you NEED to read UA-cam comments written on the live shows you played with PJ....the comments are mostly about YOU!
THANK YOU for all the chops you helped me develop when I was younger. Thanks for all the spice you put into/onto your cymbals....I learned so much.
One of my top 5 drummers of all time! I love you with all my soul bro :)
Agreed. It was over for me.
For sure my favorite of all the pearl jam drummers.
Back then Eddie always seemed like a try hard just trying to fit in and be cool. The way he'd act at the grasmmys or the way he'd yearn for the admiration of Cobain. Hell he stopped doing videos when Kurt said he hated their video. Dave was a great drummer and my personal fave from that bands history.
I still love the VS album as a drummers album. The sound of that twangy rattle in the snare , the ever steady aggressive pulsating kick patterns-and the plush short sounding cymbals were everything that made it a unique sound. The delivery of that record on the drums still is a top 5 record for me. He crafted that. I tip my cap. Love that record.
So good to hear this interview with Dave..Truly the best drummer Pearl Jam ever had and this is no disrespect to all of the other greats in that band..I love all the introspection from Dave on his life and in relation to being in the entertainment industry..Myself and others out there can’t wait to see you back on the throne playing music..Lot’s of love to you Dave you fill my heart with joy listening to your drum tracks..Stay well brother..
Thank you so much for watching!
I still cop his grooves and fills to this day.
eddie single-handedly took control of the band. They never hit that same level of creativity and greatness as when Dave Abbruzzese was there.
Agree!
That's a matter of opinion. Think PJ has gotten more creative over the years
@@robertk2007 Agreed.
@@robertk2007That’s an interesting opinion.
@@robertk2007disagree and I saw them on the Yield tour. Songs after Vitalogy just don’t have that same energy and meaning.
I love you forever,Dave A. The peak Pearl Jam drummer.🥁
This is the interview I’ve been waiting for. Thank you for taking the time, Dave, and we look forward to seeing you play out again. Keep up the awesome work!
I’m glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching!
No drummer has been able to capture the bands essence since Dave’s departure… Including all of them! Dave, don’t worry about the food or the sound…. To me, this was an informative power lunch with one of the greats of my generation…
I'm a 63 y.o guitarist and IMO young Dave is as much fun/talented to watch as Moon, Mitchell, and Bill Ward. I must have watched the Las Vegas 93 version of Dissident 500 times. The Las Vegas, limelight and Utrech concerts are astounding.
Dave's drumming on the famous April 3, 1994 broadcast is mind blowing. The highlight for me is Why Go that night. Listen to how he starts it. Whole band was on fire but Dave was the driving force start to finish.

Dave not being inducted to the RRHOF was the final straw. My long tested patience with Pearl Jam ran out. We finally broke up. If I want nostalgia I play STP.
STP blew them away
1994 Boston’s Orpheum Theatre was one of Dave’s Best Performances/Shows! Thanks Dave for being a part of my Life growing up because Your sound-drumming with PJ was a massive influence on My Life!
the way that dave plays druma is superv
Dave’s unique ability to contribute to the songs while making them interesting at the same time (with a very jazzy and unconventional approach) was to me one of the deepest influences listening to that era of PJ growing up. Monster drummer; to this day his time with them represents to me the best work they ever did.
So interesting.
I've had my heart pulled out my arse by being blindsided.... not his level of success but it still stings.
Keep moving forward dave. Badass.
Thanks for sharing this, mate! I think you are a great person, and a huge artist. You deserve everything better for your life. Keep bringing us your passion and performance!! We all love you for what you are!!
Wow Dave! Incredible stories bro. Amazing how things happen. Love ya man! 🤘🤘
Thanks to you & Dave for a very enjoyable & candid interview.
Dave and Jack will always be my favorite PJ drummers. There was an additional level to the band with them.
Dave was amazing and always clicked. Jack had the best groove and feel. I havent listened to PJ since Binural (which was matt camerons drumming and was good but i cant stand anything after this album).
I love Abbruzzese. Im a massive Pearl Jam fan. I love all their records. Abbruzzese was my favorite drummer.
Pearl Jam fan since 14 yrs old. PJ would never have been PJ today without this man. All the drummers are great and add a lot, but Dave’s free flowing driving sound embodied the sound of the time.
Fantastic interview. Thanks so much for the chance to see Dave’s side of the story. I am sure for years he was told to keep quiet for legal reasons and it’s nice the his story is finally coming out! He’s my goat drummer!
A lot of people would love to hear Dave and Pearl Jam play again. It’s just that sound
Im from Germany and Pearl Jam back then was my holy grail. AND DAVE made me love music so much … my band covered Why Go and that beat what a drive it has! I started learning drums 1,5 years ago and the first thing I wanted to play is Why go „by Dave Abbruzzese“! Man you inspire me so much and all of my friends. Just to let you know.
What an absolute honest , open and insightful reflection. Just goes to show how things that happen in life impact one on the journey forward.I have posted so many times Dave was the Rolls Royce of Pearl Jam , I love the band always have always will but equally will always wonder what we missed out on after Dave’s departure. I didn’t think my respect for Dave A could evolve, just did after listening to him here.Thank for the time in PJ mate , major part of my life , sincerely , all the way from Australia
I love his playing style.
Same the drumming king of grunge
1993 Pearl Jam was the first band I fell in love with after seeing the Unplugged on BBC 2 on a Friday evening. Stayed up until the early hours to record the 94 Fox Theatre gig on the radio. Dave was a massive part of the alchemy for me. It’s really poor how badly he was treated. Loved watching this conversation, great stuff 👍👍👍
I’m really interested in listening to the alternate version of Vitalogy Dave was talking about. It’s a shame he was let go the way he was. At least Stone had the decency to tell Dave to his face. It also sounds like it was emotional for the both of them.
WOW, DAVE ABBRUZZESE LOOKS GREAT!! 🥁🔥🔥🔥🔥 INCREDIBLE DRUMMER!! IT'S SO NICE TO SEE HIM!! 😊🩷🤘✌️ I STILL LOVE PEARL JAM, I HAVE RESPECT FOR ALL PEARL JAM DRUMMERS.
The irony is the amazing musical chemistry between Ed and Dave. Ed likely felt like he didn’t want to share the lime light, it was Dave who would see Eddie’s intensity and raise him with a busted hand!! Haha!😅
Thanks for everything!
I would love to get Dave’s take on the records they recorded after his time with them. I felt that Jack Irons did some good work with them, and even though I haven’t been a fan of Matt’s work, he actually did a great job on the new one!
Cool interview, thanks! By far my favourite PJ drummer. The energy, groove and musicality, playing that enhances the songs. Also I like the drumsound on those 2 albums.
Thank you for watching!
@FreeAssRecords
Dave what a great interview! This is the stuff I had been wondering for 30 years…
For what my little opinion is worth Dave, you will always be the most proficient and thoughtful - song serving drummer Pearl Jam has ever and will have. Wizardry behind the kit. Perfect metronome timing and so wildly creative and making it look easy.
Glad to see you want to get out there. I know I’ll be at the show!!
~Sean
I totally agree 👏
Dave gave Pearl Jam its energy back then. He is an incredible drummer. What a shame what they did to him.
What an awesome interview with Dave. A real and honest human, and STELLAR drummer. Thanks for such a great episode R&RCS, you’re the best⚡️
Thank you so much for listening! YOU are the best! 🤘
I thought it was cool that you were comfortable enough to eat and just have a conversation. I admire that. I would’ve been too far up my own a$$ to be able to do it. Thank you for continuing to tell us stories. And Thank You for the music !!
I think the technical issues made me listen more intently. So well worth the extra effort to get the nuggets out. For me the big one is that you can try to explain yourself well but sometimes people are just going to take it the way they want to rather than listen to what was said or written. I don't get why we do that. It's no wonder we all have trouble getting along. Glad Dave isn't bitter and has learnt so much about himself. We've all got a lot to learn.
What a blast to be on stage, behind the drum riser on my crutches watching this man operate at the Boston Garden cir 1994
Great drummer, great interview. Laid back but passionate, and feels very honest.
Everyone playing drums for PJ will always be compared and just filling Dave A’s spot! And I’m a huge Matt Cameron’s fan, in Soundgarden, bot in PJ!
Absolutely. I love MCs work in soundgarden, but everyone makes themself look stupid sitting in Dave’s spot. There is no other
This dude definitely inspired me to play drums in the early days… really talented and a pure gem of music history. Stoked to have had the pleasure of listening and witnessing early PJ energy 🤙🏾
Dave Abruzzi is the best drummer of Pearl jam ❤️❤️❤️....... Specifically VS album 👍👍👍my 1 favorite🇵🇭
Great to Dave… my favorite drummer of all time!
Would love to hear that original version of Vitalogy that Dave was talking about….
A true star! I was learning the drums when pearl jam were at their most popular and I wore out my cassette of Vs in the end. Such a fresh and creative drummer!!!
Omg I love Dave! It's great to see him... You look amazing ❤️ You should join a band dude! Epic!!
Hi, Leandro from Argentina here
I wanted to say the thing i like the most of this interview is how naturally it flows... eating, drinking and coffing while telling stories about living amongst music legends. Dave, thank you for the music and sorry for my english 😅
Love Dave's drumming style 🤘
Great interview! Dave is truly one of a kind. A real hero and most of all: THE GOAT PJ DRUMMER 🙌
🙌
Saw the 92 lolapolooza in Vancouver. Best show, best summer ever.
Dave's band and album Green Romance Orchestra was his finest moment after "GO". The whole Green Romance album is a giant drum solo performance if you will. Unreal music. Miss Green Romance Orchestra! Regroup it Dave !
Jeff Ament stated something about them dropping Dave because they like to play with feel. Dave was the feel. Stone plays white boy funk and Jeff played the same bass line 5 times on 5 different songs on the Ten recording with Krusen. Dave carried them all hard until they actually learned how to play. Eddie sounded like he had marbles in his mouth for the entirety of Ten. Dave was straight up VS. and the band woke up by Vitology where Dave was just as awesome. Dave was done wrong and PJ shouldn’t get any respect for that.
never was a Jeff Ament fan. and if it weren't for "grunge" blowing up, nobody would have given a shit about MLB.. there I said it, deal with it.
I been such a big fan of Dave since he joined pearl jam. . My style of playing was heavily influenced by him. Such a underrated drummer
PJ was never the same after he was fired. I think Vitology was the last album I bought. After that it was done IMO. Dave brought so much to that band.
You were the best drummer they've had! I'm 43 years old and I seen Pearl jam 11 times or so something like that and they were always the tightest and seem the happiest when you were playing. In my opinion I don't know what went on behind the scenes but when you guys are out on stage jamming it was amazing!! And "go" is my favorite song btw!! Lol
I remember as a teenager during the 90s EV didn’t get along with Dave A…it was kept low key and suddenly Jack Irons was their drummer…it shows EV was and always is the final say in the band. main songwriter, singer and leader, face of PJ…Dave A contributed to their 90s records which are arguably their greatest…he captures the fierceness of their sound and aggression. unforgettable
As a goof letter to Ten Club we asked Dave to call us, and he did right before the Vs release, and he was really cool and nice, and was asking us about Joey Buttafucco lmao.
What’s interesting is I have never really heard what Eddie was really like, but now I’m like, oh he’s a dick, makes sense.
Still on my Favorite List !!!!
VS is one of my favourite Rock albums, and certainly the best sounding Pearl Jam record they ever did IMO. The thing about Dave is that he has a signature sound / personality on the drums which was as significant on that record as the Guitar Tones, or Eddie's voice. When you listen to that record, the drums aren't just supporting anonymously in the background. It's like listening to Alex Van Halen on 1984, Ian Paice on the Burn record, or Bonham on the Houses of the Holy album. The drum parts are EXCITING. That snare sound is pure joy. The biggest sadness is that we didn't get to hear Dave on any further mainstream Rock albums, he'd have been amazing in GnR or ChickenFoot for example. Matt Cameron is obviously a world class drummer, but I just listened to PJ's last two singles and, honestly, the drums are just...there. I don't think the current PJ taste in mixing helps.
He was the best PJ drummer and wrote/cowrote some of the best songs they've ever released.
First off I’m really glad I ran across this interview. Dave is one of my favorite drummers. I’ve been playing the drums since 1970 and I still play in a couple of bands to this day. We play out two or three times a month so I do know a bit about the instrument. No disrespect to any of the drummers for PJ. I just feel like Dave was the best fit for Pearl Jam I’m glad to see he’s doing okay.
Dave in GnR now that Slash and Duff are back would be amazing.
Cheers to the best PJ drummer, after watching this, I Think you might have been to normal for the band, no ego is a great thing to have. I wish you well. ROCK ON!
I love Matt Camerons' drumming with Soundgarden - unbeleivable. But Abbruzzee was the best Pearl Jam drummer, no question.
I will say watch this whole interview! I was familiar with Pearl Jam in the early 90’s ! I had turned 20 in 1991! I rem the videos ! I’ll be honest I’ve never been a Pearl Jam fan ! When the im still alive video cam out ! I seen the drummer! Then it wasn’t to much later! Dave is in and I’m like that’s not the same guy and few years later Dave is gone and he was replaced ! But I rem. Soundgardens drummer took over as permanent drummer! I was like what was happening to the drummers in this band ! ⚡️space ace Ron ⚡️
The part where Dave talks about being happy to celebrate the band's Gold status while "whoa is me" Eddie and the band of mopers sat in a depressed state to even celebrate it just reminded me of what I hate about that band and the overall attitude of the grunge era bands. Mostly good music, but the prissy arrogance is off the charts. Fuck Eddie, All hail Dave.
I agree! Unbelievable!
“I drive a 1994 Toyota truck”
(So I am still cool) Eddie.
“I drive a 69’ Toyota Corolla”.
(Let’s trade and you can be even cooler). Me
I would have slapped them for that behaviour. This was the part of grunge I hated. Every day above ground is a good day.
Dave is the best!
