Billy Sheehan on the Mr. Big "Big Finish Tour", how one song changed his life, bass playing & more!
Billy Sheehan joins me while on tour with Mr. Big to discuss the "Big Finish Tour" Talas, the David Lee Roth Band, forming Mr. Big, bass playing and a lot more!
Billy Sheehan is a highly acclaimed bassist known for his playing style and innovative techniques. he began his musical career in the 1970s, gaining recognition for his work with the band Talas. However, he became widely known for his tenure with David Lee Roth's solo band in the mid-1980s, where his energetic bass lines and flashy stage presence earned him a reputation as one of rock's premier bassists.
Billy co-founded Mr. Big in 1988. With Mr. Big, Billy further showcased his bass skills, contributing to hits like "To Be with You." The band achieved considerable commercial success and earned Billy even more recognition within the music industry.

I was at the Rockit Club gig and Ravi did a solo and at the end of it Mid said something like enough of that shit..It also wasn't the same with one guitar (no Ben WTF) on the classics. S&B was a good bluesy album, but such a drastic change from the epic Transcendence
Great interview! Still have my Par Records cassette tape that I purchased at Peaches Records on Fowler Ave in Tampa.
The only good Pearl Jam album was Ten, and he didn’t play drums there 😂
Joe, I'm a huge fan of Beau Hill. This interview was disastrous because of your co-host (I assume his name is Pete). Why would you bring him in the first place? You don't even need a co-host. The interview you did with Beau 2 years ago was awesome, and I was expecting similar dynamics in this one. Pete kept talking too much about himself, made long and numerous references unrelated to Beau Hill (many of those unknown to us), and interrupted him too many times to talk again about himself or what just popped out of his mind. Beau has a very entertaining, creative way of telling a story, but Pete kills it when cutting him off. Beau is incredibly polite and patient, a very fine person, although I'm sure these derailments were unpleasant to him as well. You can't let Pete (or any co-host) do this again.
I appreciate your feedback. Hopefully Beau will be back on the show real soon to discuss another record!
@@RNRcoffeeshow That would be awesome. I'll stay tuned.
Great to see you Dave, you're a super cool guy. And Vs. was my first album :-)
The guitar tone on that album is to this day some of the best ever recorded!!! We played it back and forward the summer of 85. Saw them in Irvine meadows with Bon Jovi opening summer of 1985!!!
Was he in Anthrax too?
I wonder if he is putting a book out.
Great underrated actor and great at the "bad guy" roles.
BIBLE STUDY IS IN SESSION 😊
I graduated hs in 1986 so I was there before they came to be, saw them come to fame and eventually be replaced by Grunge. Immediately after I saw Round & Round on MTV, I immediately hopped in my 1980 Z28 and blazed down to the my local music shop and bought my first 🎸and have been playing ever since. That band changed the game and is now considered a legend. Great time to be alive.
It's interesting his entanglements with Eddie Vedder and Axl Rose, two men widely known to be fairly difficult, especially back in the day
To be fair to Eddie. I've heard bits and pieces of things he said in recent years about how he wished he would have acted the way he acted in the 90s and he could go back and tell himself to chill the fuck out or something along those lines. There is immense pressure. When I was a teenager in the late 2000s watching interviews of Eddie in the 90s and such, reading about him it resonated with me how edgy he was compared to those who sort of embraced fame. But now I'm 31 working my ass off everyday. Still love the music of this band, dark matter is a amazing album. But at this age and with my current life experience I find that his behavior was pretty insufferable. It's amazing to compare him to somebody like Liam Gallagher, who at the time seemed definitely insufferable but in a different way than eddie. I find that Layne Staley and Chris Cornell as far as I can tell seemed to have been the most down-to-earth of the singers of the four big grunge bands. Rest easy those guys. Eddie definitely had a form of lead singer syndrome. I think he has come a long way for certain though. If what Dave is saying is true about the way Eddie treated him around the time he was fired, that's completely idiotic of Eddie. I also don't think you can discount the geographic and political aspect. I know Jeff was from Montana but the other three guys were West Coast through and through. I think Jeff had been thoroughly emesh into the punk rock ethos. I think even Steve Albini, also rest in peace as of today, said that looking back on a lot of the alternative subculture there was a lot of elitism in disguised as progressivism. Dave being from Texas I think naturally caused some divide in the way he was raised in probably his ethos in general. I'm from central Pennsylvania which is about as red as you can get, Pearl Jam was a beacon of Awesomeness for me growing up because they weren't red. But as I've grown up I'm definitely not a Republican at all or conservative, but I think I could see things through Dave's perspective much better. I grew up around guns, hunted, shot muzzleloaders, 12 gauge shotgun in the woods of pa. I kind of gravitated as a teenager to the sentiment that Pearl Jam had, primarily eddie, around guns. So when I was 14 I thought they fire Dave for a good reason. And then some reason a few years back when said something along the lines of wishing pain or death to anybody who might own a gun, I was real turned off for many years. Personally I think there's a reason why he shut up about that issue. I think he realized that there was a lot of fans who are sensible on guns. Glorified G at this point seems pretty insufferable, but it is a fucking banger in terms of music
The guy in the hat is the reason this channel only has 2.5k subscribers, he needs to quit interrupting Beau.
Can’t wait sound like old times
4 v 1, any PJ fan worth their salt knows for a fact the band was never the same once he was kicked out. What a shame.
This was a great interview. You allowed him to speak, you knew what you were talking about and it was a great flow. Maybe push on what he was planning on doing next, he hinted some stuff. Also, I WANT TO HEAR THE VERSION OF VITALOGY HE HAS!!! :)
A great interview along with the Tony Harnell one also 👍, looks like you have a great array of guests - just subscribed, thank you.
How weird is that bit where Ben asks the interviewer about the gig that Midnight got fired after: Was it a good gig? "Yeah, I thought so".
Eiger 👍🏽
I love you forever,Dave A. The peak Pearl Jam drummer.🥁
Thanks again for for taking care of my son James
Watching from Ireland
As a fan of PJ throughout their career, I feel that Dave IS solely responsible for their reputation as a great live show. His spirit and resulting live energy from the first tour until his last show completely guided how the rest of the group moved and grooved on stage. To not collectively acknowledge such a simple truth when the evidence is clear is COMPLETE BULLSHIT!
facts
I just finished up Tom’s book. It is a great read that transports you into his life in the music business during the 70s and 80s. The behind the scene stories and the making of landmark records is highly recommended.
"Promosm" 💔
pearl jam was never the same when you left dave. i was always saying since at the time that you were still in that band that you and mcready possess the rocker mystique of the ban.d. its not eddie. its 2024 now and look how the band sounded? it's like the heavier version of tom petty and the heartbreakers!. try listening wreckage from their latest album, dark matter...you know, looking back, at first, i thought maybe the band developed and matured musically. but to me, after no code and binaural, i believe they started to lose their hard rocker touch. they somehow changed their image and sound and adapted the vibes of young listeners and new fans .
I was never a big fan of Pearl Jam, I just don't dig Eddie's whole thing. It's not for me. But I always respected Dave Abbruzzese's drumming. Way, way underrated. He deserved way better.
Vedder sounds like he's always takingng a shit
The best Pearl Jam record was Ten. Period.
and the best PJ drummer was Dave A. period
the best drummer of pearl jam
For sure my favorite of all the pearl jam drummers.
Thanks for sharing this, mate! I think you are a great person, and a huge artist. You deserve everything better for your life. Keep bringing us your passion and performance!! We all love you for what you are!!
Pearl Jam were never the same after kicking Dave out of the band. They should ask him to rejoin, give them a much needed kick in the pants.
He broke Eddie’s guitar and never apologized. Wonder what their records what have looked like if he hadn’t done that.
I would love to get Dave’s take on the records they recorded after his time with them. I felt that Jack Irons did some good work with them, and even though I haven’t been a fan of Matt’s work, he actually did a great job on the new one!
The worst sounding interview ever. Fuck dave for not being professional enough to have a good mic or having a good connection. Unlistenable
I am suprised "closer to my heart" and "between the eyes" were not bigger songs. That opening riff on between... was heavy. If Ratt would have been able to just get along. They would be selling out arenas. Pound for pound Ratt blows away Motley in talent and songwriting. So many great songs. Then "Infestation"! A L.P. that could have been the follow-up to Cellar or Invasion. Such a shame. I do love the backup vocals especially on closer. I really thought it was King Crosby and Juan.. R.I.P. Robbin. The day he went out of control, it was the beginning of the end...
Midnight was the band, it died with him. No singer will ever be good enough to replace him.
This was a great interview Dave
I wonder how that tape sounds
RELEASE YOUR TAPES DAVE
I have an old VHS skid row home video. And used to watch it all the time. Omg yes it needs to be on digital format...i would totally buy a dvd of it. Omg i just wanna know what he cooked up. I can hear him eating and whatever it is it sound good 😂 why am i picturing bowtie pesto pasta hahaha.
Im just imaginin Rob in his kitchen cooking and cleaning soem dishes (thats what it sounds like) hahaha i wosh there was video yo this audo. That would of been fun watching hi cook dinner while doing this interview. He was always my favorite in the band. I think i still have pics from magazines and poster rhat covered my walls in h.s. in the late 80s of him and kid row. I think i saved some in storage bin. I could be wrong but i feel like i did save some.
You were great Dave and still are❤
Such an interesting person. I have always enjoyed her work. 🤓
A legend! ⭐👏 Super work in the X-Files, episode 16 of season 2, terminator style! Great! ❤️
36:24 haha I didn't expect that fact in this interview. It's very true but most people in europe don't even realise it :) funny I noticed that watching during intro and the end credits of terminator where the soundtrack is sped up a little bit. I'm a fan of 24fps btw :)
The 2nd album was great as well. There's no capturing the lightning from the first one, but there's no sophomore jinx with white trash.
I love the second album as well! Still have my original CD. What a great band.
People need to stop telling him to let it go. It is unhelpful & dismissive. Nothing wrong with him discussing his experiences.
On another note: I heard some of his recent session work: pretty amazing stuff.
Screw the above comment for whinging about the audio & being outright insulting. Dave A. explained the issue succinctly in a pinned comment. He never broke Eddie’s guitar. Eddie is a liar who lied about that as did Brendan & Nick. He went to a drum seminar but the guitar breaking incident never happened. Screw that jagoff for calling him a joker & discarding his HOF worthiness, he is 💯 worthy of the HOF like Iron Maiden & Motörhead no matter what Eddie thinks.
People need to cut Dave A. some slack. Let the guy lament about his mistreatment & not getting his due. Back off, Jas**n M. for calling Dave A. a joker & discounting his Rock Hall snub. Yes, Iron Maiden & Motörhead should be inducted but Dave also is deserving of induction & his snub courtesy of Eddie is indeed a major slight. You are the joker, you assclown.
It is irrelevant that he did not play on Ten. He toured in support of Ten & played on the albums that made them superstars, which makes him part of that era.
Dave and Jack were their best drummers. Obviously Matt is a phenom drummer...but he worked much better in SG. His style is a little too forward for this band IMO. They sound best with a Jack or Dave playing on, or just slightly behind the beat to give it groove and soul. Matt sounds like a robot with them for some reason; not sure why.
So bizarre right ?! On paper should be the greatest pairing of all time. Yet he just doesn’t quite fit. Dave A the goat !
