Hi Jay, Pasquale here, from Italy 🇮🇹
Well done video, also the one with the comparison with the A7III.
Glad you liked the videos and thanks for the comments :)
I have this camera and love it for many of the same reasons you do.
I can highly recommend the Sony AGR2 grip for this and other RX100 cameras. It makes a big improvement on the camera's ergonomics, it does't add too much to the size of the camera and it is cheap.
Every RX100 review should mention the AGR2 grip! It completely transforms these cameras!
The best explanation or kind of tutorial for the RX100 VI on youtube, and love the links below 👍
Thank you :)
Awesome review and am saving now. Thank you.
I have checked out many reviews on the rx100 vi and other similar cameras. Your's is one of the best. I ordered mine today. Will probably use your other videos on this camera to familiarise myselft on its operation. Thank you for this very complete 'real world' review.
Honestly I have seen a ton of all sorts of reviews, I wish people did reviews like you and throughly explain how it all works. Kudos!. I have no idea about cameras and bought this camera today just for travelling and basic photos and ur review really helps ! Can’t wait to start using it. I need visual reviews to learn! Love ur work!!
Thank you very much ;)
Nice to see a camera actually being used for PHOTOGRAPHY!!
Great review went into depth now I can finalize my decision and get the RX100 VII as my first RX Camera, previously had an A7iii. 2.8-4.5 aperture range is capable and having the zoom range opens up many possibilities.
Awesome, thanks for the comments!!
Hi Jay, thanks for this wonderful detailed review video. I enjoyed the real world test you did which convinced me to buy one soon. Indeed, it is a good camera because it is compact and is equipped with some professional features.
Nice video Jay. Yes, this little camera is a mighty atom. I just wish that they would incorporate a larger, more powerful, battery, and, insodoing, the extra bulge created for the bigger battery could also give the camera a much needed grip.
i used it in florida universal studios- very light pictures were outstanding
Didn't want to spend a lot to find out if I would use a compact or wind up just shooting with my phone. I found a 2nd hand HX90V.
It's great. Might go for RX100V if I find the HX90 isn't enough for me. Except for sensor, features near same but no 4k, only 1080p ....
Good review, helps a lot in decision making.
Thanks for this Video. You are great. I hope I get the RX100M6 today!
Thank you very much for the kind words and comments ;)
Great review with real world shots.Fab camera.
I don't even own one of these but couldn't stop watching your awesome and extremely well made review! Now I'll have to check one out! (I'm a Sony a6000 guy) I'll also check out your other vids. Again, well done.
thank you for this fantastic video.
You're very welcome!
amazing camera review love how you explained and showed everything keep it up
Thank you very much Jerald ;)
Terrific video. Very helpful to see real world sample pictures. I have the RX 10 IV which I love, but have been thinking of picking this one up. I've never had a compact camera. Looks fun!
Firstly, thank you for this great video. Secondly, I am in a situation right now where previously avoided buying into the RX100 series because I thought I could not justify their ~/> $1000 price tags for a compact camera. I have 2 Dslrs and almost the all the STM lenses & a Lensbaby fish eye but decided to go back to the pocketable approach. I have an S95 from 2011 and that is still a wonderful camera (a truly pocketable one); I wanted to shoot actually more video (without getting into the Gh5's vs the BMPCC4K world). For a change I went with the Lumix LX10, instead of waiting for the G7Xm3 (which still hasn't arrived) and the savings went to a GoPro6 instead of getting just the RX100 V. So far I am happy with my LX10. I usually use it with my Zhiyun Crane-M. While I do enjoy the big aperture of the LX10, it's range is 24-70mm, which brought me to this quest to supplementing it with the Lumix ZS200 (24mm-360mm), which led me to the Leica C-Lux (which is just the Leica version but at least $300 more expensive), which brought me again to the RX100 series -- the mark VI) whew! So now, which is which? I thought getting the ZS200 would be the most sensible because probably the built in color/picture profiles will be the same and edit will be effortless, or do I get the "Leica" just to try a Leica when it's truly not a true Leica, or should I just get the RX100m6 for all it's tech but editing files with my LX10 may pose additional work?!? Again, thank you for your video and your work.
That is a hard decision. The one negative of the ZS200 is the slower aperture due to the larger sensor and extended range. So as good as the range is, in low light it will be difficult to get anything handheld at zoom. The LX10 and C-Lux are both very nice options as well and offer a faster lens than the Sony RX100 VI or VA. The downside to the LX10 is the AutoFocus abilities, which are far superior on the Sony RX100 VA and VI for both photos and video. You are also missing out on the pop-up oled viewfinder the RX100 offers. For the budget minded the LX10 is a great option if you can live without the Autofocus speed, viewfinder, and better 1" sensor that the Sony offers. Best of luck with your decisions and sorry for the delayed reply ;)
Nice review. Subd.
Great video! Great information!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience of this awesome camera with us. I will add that to my wish list. I am considering a compact camera to complement my dslr canon and that can produce pictures of better quality than my iphone can.
Glad it was helpful and best of luck ;)
What kind of software do you use on this video please? it looks so easy to learn....
Did you ever find out what software we have to download for this camera? I always use Nikon so its not compatible....
Thanks you I m learning alot from your videos! Btw wanderful family!
Thank you very much and I'm glad the videos are helping you out ;)
What a fantastic video review and camera! Can’t wait for mine to arrive. Just two questions please?
1) Can one ‘select’ a frame from the video or slow motion video into a JPEG file?
2) When the camera stops operating due to overheating,
a - how long before you can use it again?
b - will swapping batteries help?
Thanks so much!
Ilse
Hello! #1 No, not as far as I know other than doing it a computer via screen capture. #2 It depends on the ambient temperature and changing the battery might help, but I doubt it. It's more the sensor itself temperature that is the problem. Having the screen out might help a little ;)
Jay SonyAlphaLab
Thanks so much!
Please can you help me with getting HFR video right? I’ve watched your tutorial MANY times but it just won’t work ‘the same’. To start taking the ‘movie’ I need to press the CENTRE button and then the RECORD button when I want it to write it to the SD card.
Whether I choose ‘record start’ or ‘record end’, I always miss the ball coming down into the water. The first few spilt seconds are always missing. When I start the process sooner, it records nothing because the ball is still in my hand.
I get the impression that only a split second is actually recorded at at any setting and unless your timing is by luck spot on, you just can’t get it right? Is that correct?
How much recording time do you have available to ‘catch that crucial action’ in HFR setting?
Thanks so much!
Also, can you tell me where can I find details instructions on all the menu settings?
Thanks so very much for all your help!!
Ilse
@@Jason_Hermann I believe that you can take a photo during non 4K video with the Sony RX100VI camera.
The problem I have with this camera is the viewfinder
Its not a true 2.3mpx
but its equivalent to this
ie it has 1/3 of the pixels which it sequences the 3 colours sequentially at a high frame rate
I am very sensitive to this arrangement resulting in headaches and eyestrain
I'm sorry to hear that and thanks for sharing your experience, so others are aware! I wish I could offer some kind of suggestion, but I can"t think of anything....
Thanks for the review, very insightful. Would like to see a video where you compare the RX10 mk4 to the RX100 mk6 in terms of actual picture and video quality.
Thanks for the comments and request Michael. Both cameras have the same sensor and Zeiss quality optics although different lenses. Image quality and video quality is pretty much identical. The much larger zoom range the RX10 IV offers can get you some better close-ups when you need the reach, and some better zoom transition effects in video for example, but other than the lens range, I would say the IQ is about the same. Also, be sure to check out my RX10 VI Review so you can see for yourself here: ua-cam.com/video/L4_Rlw6hw8Q/v-deo.html
I purchased the RX10 mk4 based in part on your review! This is most interesting that the 2 cameras can delivery the same quality video/ pictures. I value portability so I'm thinking I might swap. I do love the extended zoom range of the RX10m4 though! tough choice..
Very cool!! One other thing worth noting is the RX10 IV can record 4k video for 29 minute clips, but the RX100 VI can only record 5 minute 4k clips due to the smaller size. I forget to mention that in my previous reply, and it's a very important difference if your filming in 4k and considering switching cameras. The size difference is very significant, so I can totally see why you are considering the RX100 VI as an alternative. It's a hard choice, but that rx100 pocket-ability is such a killer feature ;)
How does the RX100 VII compare to the VI? Your video on the VI offers viewers an exceptionally well done and comprehensive review of the VI and the imagery it produces. I would love to see you do a similar review on the VII. Thanks.
H Tom and thanks for the comments/ questions! I'm currently reviewing the RX100 VII now ;) In the meantime I put an article together with other quality reviews and a full breakdown which goes over the new features and differences here: www.sonyalphalab.com/new-sony-rx100-vii-reviews/
@@Jason_Hermann Thanks for the link to reviews of the vii. Nonetheless, I really look forward to your review because you best examine a camera's ability to produce still images & now with a longer zoom and new aperture range. Can the vii better perform in low light & in sunny weather? Most other reviews emphasize vlogging, video, and microphone use. Please tell us about camera lens performance when taking still images. Thanks again.
@@tombic6373 Will do Tom, but to be clear the lens on the RX100 VII is the same exact one that is on the Sony RX100 VI, so you can expect the images to look the same. I appreciate your sentiments though and I have a ton of sample photos already, so the review will be highly detailed with the info you are looking for. I just don't want you to expect a difference between the RX100 VI and VII as far as basic photography goes...
@@Jason_Hermann Thanks--you are correct. Apparently, the only new change that may affect image quality is the new lower ISO 100 base with extension to 64. And given the camera's same 1" sensor and lens, is there anything else that might affect image quality? Thanks again for your time, courtesy, and expertise.
Explained perfectly well
great video. thanks!
Thank you!
Dear Jason. Great video. How would you compare the picture quality on the RX100 vi to that from the a6400 with the Sony 18-135mm ? Similar range!
Well the Sony A66400 has the larger sensor, so it will be a little better in low light situations I would say. The A6400 w/ 18-135mm lens is gigantic in comparison to the RX100 VI... And still the RX100 VI has more range. The larger sensor gets you better quality most of the time if you are using a good lens. The RX100 VI also takes a great photo and video, but is so ultra compact it's a little harder to use and can't record in 4k as long without overheating issues... It's so compact though, you can bring it everywhere with very little burden. I would still rather have the A6400 though, because you can get different lenses and get way better image quality with good glass... I hope that helps, Jay
@@Jason_Hermann Thanks Jason. I already have the A6400 with some Sigma primes. I was looking for a telephoto lens. My choices are between the Sony 18-135 and an Rx100 Mk6. I mostly shoot photos during the day and Almost no video!!
I would prefer the Sony Rx100 Mk6 if it produces sharper results than the 18-135. If the results are comparable, then a used 18-135 makes more sense.
I hear what you are saying but I don't think the RX100 VII is going to produce better results, but they may appear sharper due to the depth of field difference caused by the smaller 1" sensor in the RX100 VII... The 18-135mm lens is very sharp, but lacks some contrast due to the cheaper build compared to the really expensive lenses. It's still a great lens though for the money. Again, it's hard to say what your opinion of the image quality difference would be, but I would still prefer the larger sensor and 18-135mm... If anything I would invest in a better lens for the A6400 before buying another camera. However, if you want a turn key solution the RX100 VII is just that.... I hope that helps? Jay
Thanks again Jay , good familyman, me like 🙏
Thank you Edwin :)
Jay
Great reviews thanks
Do you have a recommendation for a decent Wind Filter for rx100 m6. Dislike the real hairy versions.
Does Anybody have any suggestions?
Good review!
Does shooting in raw file makes the battery die quicker?
Not really, but it may take a little longer to write the larger raw files to the memory card which may result in a little extra battery juice being used now that you mention it. I really don't think it would make that much of a difference though. The screen and sensor power is what draws the most I would think...
I have one question, I just got a Sony RX100 IV and when i'm on Manual mode, if i go to the DRIVE MODE the only options are Single shooting and Self timer, the rest is restricted. Do you know why this is? Thanks a lot!!
Hi Jay, your coverages about Sony RX100 VI and V are great ! Am new to camera. How significant are they in low light conditions between SONY Rx100 VI (f/2.8-4.5) and VA (f/1.8-f/2.8) shoot in auto mode ? You showed the 'Macdonald' photo in this video for Sony Rx100 VI. Just wonder how will it look like in Sony Rx100 VA. Thanks.
Hello, The High ISO abilities are so good on these cameras nowadays, that photo would not look that much different on the VI vs the VA, but the VA would certainly look a little cleaner when pixel peeping.
Hi Jay, thank you so much for your reply. Actually I prefer to buy Sony RX100 VI to use it as a additional camera to my IPhoneXS. If I understand your input correctly, low light conditions between these two camera can be quite the same if I were to view them on a laptop or tablet without cropping or magnifying the photos ?
Hi! Best settings for fast paced low light concerts? I guess there are bright lights too, that always messes me up. Any advice is appreciated! Thanks
Hi Jay thinking of getting into photography as I do a lot of walking and wild camping I've looked at a lot of cameras to be fare but keep coming back to the rx series v or vi,
At the moment I take all my pics with my phone I would like my first camera to do everything lol.....but do realise there will be compromise......I would love to be able to shoot some star pics on a evening my friend uses his go pro 4 on manual mode and gets some real good images on a night considering it's a actione cam how would the 2 rx models do against go pro and would there be a massive difference between the v and vi would be gr8 if you had some pics of 5 v 6 shooting stars as I can't find any on net ....great video mate and yes I have subbed you. Atb rob
I have a Sony RX100 V and although it can record video at 4K, one of the feature, Intelligent Steadyshot only works at 1080 setting. I wonder if in this VI version, Sony has made it possible to have Intelligent Steadyshot (basically stabilization) available in 4K mode. Thanks
No, intelligent Steadyshot does not work in 4k video on the RX100 VI either... It does have basic sensor stabilization though.
@@Jason_Hermann Thanks for your answer. Can you recommend me any not too big Sony camera that can do that in 4K
No mic input hmmp
I used to use g7x mark ii
It had great pictures but slow af killed me. Would you recommend me rx 100 mk5 or mk6?
Hi and yes I would recommend either the RX100 VA or VI for the latest and greatest, but the Mark IV is also a great camera with excellent AF. The RX100 VI has much more zoom range than the IV or VA however, just to make you aware. 24-70 vs 24-200mm, but the Mark VI is a lot more money than your current camera as well which is worth noting. It really is and amazing camera though when you look at all the features, real world performance, and ultra compactness. I hope that helps, Jay
Sony please add a mic input and this would be the ultimate vlog camera!
Go to 9:26, you'll see the lens is 28-70mm f3.5-5.6 so that is clearly not RX100 VI. Nice try though...
You are correct about that particular photo and I apologize. I took two of the same images comparing the RX100 VI and Sony A7 w/ 28-70mm kit lens for another video and mixed the photos up somehow. The image I showed there by error, was the A7 III sample and not the RX100VI as you pointed out. I have the same exact shot from the RX100 VI, but somehow picked the wrong image by mistake for the review collection I created in Lightroom. I'm really sorry about that and I can assure you that was not done on purpose!! If I really wanted to intentionally lie about things, I could have easily manipulated the EXIF data to make that say it was the RX100 VI instead of the FE 28-70mm lens as it showed in the video, just so you are aware... Again, my error, and thank you very much for pointing it out! I'm really shocked I made that mistake and did not notice while editing the video. The link to the RX100 VI sample photo gallery is here (photos.app.goo.gl/kQNmYcTjpCtNmYceA), so you can check the correct image out for reference, and again, my apologies for the error. Here is the video where I compared the A7 III w/ FE 28-70mm vs the RX100 VI for reference so you can see both images compared if you like: ua-cam.com/video/92rPXIW2Hlc/v-deo.html
One big fault of the camera: LCD is crap in direct sunlight and when you pop up the EVF you always need to adjust the diopter correction because it won't stay in the same position when you close it and open it up again. Very annoying from an extremely priced camera!
Image quality is nothing new, same as my old RX100IV. The more than one stop slower (not just a little bit slower) lens makes it almost useless in low light compared to the 1,8-2,8 lens because low light performance is not improved at all. The ND filter is really missing when shooting video in daylight and no app store/no interval shooting. I should be able to install the purchased apps on five cameras but Sony changed its mind and showed the middle finger to the customers. HFR shooting above 240fps is just a gimmick feature if you care about image quality.
So for me, the camera is really a mixed bag. The long reach is good but I'm still not sure if it's enough to keep it.
Who cares about super slo-mo - that's a novelty add-on - so often it comes across as a main feature.
I particularly love that feature, and it has a spot on the mode dial, so it's pretty high on the features that matter list I would say. Also, if you want high quality slow-mo for any kind of stunt type work, or sports practice captures for coaching assistance, then this camera is a great option. I can totally see how Slow-Mo would be of no interest to somebody just interested in photography though, so depending on your needs that makes total sense... Thanks for the comments Paul, Jay
Paul, you can look at it as a novelty add on, or something that could be usefully even above 240FPS at an affordable cost with just a little post editing compared to other slo-mo capable cameras, or slo-mo dedicated cameras. ua-cam.com/video/bNdldbNVNh8/v-deo.html Even cameras like the Chronos starting at $3,000 US, and others going up much higher in price for same frames rates but sometimes lower resolutions. Then take the sharpness of the 200mm range lens that fits in a pocket, being able to have that range with the High Frame Rate was impressive. In my opinion if you want a camera that’s portable, does video, has 25 frame capture, fast autofocus or 88% semi-pro DSLR manual options in a pocket it might work for you. I’ve spent more on semi pro DSLR kits with multiple lenses to get less features, no video, and no slow motion when I first switched to digital from film and not nearly as portable. It might not be for everyone, but for some hobbiest that don’t want to carry (or physically can’t) a camera bag with lenses this little camera offers a lot for the price.
next time pls hide your head when showing the example fotos thank you!
Thanks, I really appreciate the feedback and I am doing it that way now. It's way easier for me as well ;)
