Duke Robillard is capable playing blues and/or jazz with the same mastery.
One of my favorite guitarists. Love him as a blues artist, admire him even more for his jazz output. Thanks for the hours of fine music, Duke.
I've seen Duke live and he covers a lot of ground in terms of styles. This film is cool for presenting him in a trio setting with just bass and drums. That's a heavy gig for any guitar player - but especially in the jazz setting - but Duke brings it off without any problems at all. Tasteful and as melodic as always. I hear a lot Kenny Burrell in his playing here, which is high praise as far I am concerned, because KB is one of the all-time greats on jazz guitar. Interesting, too, because he is playing mostly straight ahead modern jazz instead of the older swing and big band material he has done in the past.
This is my first time listening to this cat and I really dig it so far!
Love Duke. Been listening for years and saw him live back in late 90’s. Agree with the Kenny Burrell comparison and love that rich humbuckery tone. Very cool indeed.
