"Dropped in quality."? I think you were dropped on your head. They introduced stronger weapons, better movement (sliding), better backgrounds, awesome neon aura-lighted floors...
Mega Man 4 is such a good game, it deserves all the praise. This is the third best in the NES series after MM2 (#2) and MM3 (#1). The level design was awesome!
I didn't like 3 for the sole reason that it made you fight each boss by going through their stage again, which was then followed by Wily's Castle itself. That shit dragged on forever.
Squirtle Leader I think that MEGAMAN 4 IS BETTER THEN 3! Got difficulty just right and not as elemental and more unique bosses! Has Dr. Cossack's music of better then MEgaman 2!
MM4 is of more ambitious nature than MM2, for sure. Still, some of it's design choices were questionable. The weapons were top-notch, (right up there with MM9's set of special weapons), music, level designs (excluding those of Drill Man and Dustman). And I agree that the difficulty is 'consistently balanced' now.
Squirtle Leader I liked the Drill man level and Dust man. The dust man level gimmicks RETURN AT ALL! Only in the gameboy titles twice! D= Megaman 2 was fun but 4 has my favourite charge shot. The green, blue, and black charge shot that WORKS MUCH BETTER THEN MEGAMAN 5's! The charge shot is more satisfying to use compared to the rest of the megaman games.Though unbalanced.
I kinda like the Dust Man stage myself. MM4 on the NES is one of the absolute best MM titles (after MM3 and MM9, maybe it's debatable on which is better, MM2 or this) Yeah, I have also played the Game Boy titles. Mega Man IV is my favorite (the best on the GB!), second favorite is 'V' (new levels, robot masters, enemies). I like those games, but the first three weren't much good.
Dropped in quality? Less creative? You forgot a new plot element the other games lack: the attempt to convince you Cossack has replaced Wiley. Routine? In ways maybe. But 4 is my favorite Mega Man game, followed by 3, which--by the way--it's more challenging than, which is another reason for it being my favorite.
Mega Man 2, 4, 6, and 9 are my personal favorites. The level design, the robot masters, the incredible soundtracks, the charming stories, the weapons. Those games had all of those things in the highest degree, in my honest opinion, and immediately became classics to me. 10 became like that over time the more I played it too.
I agree, after Mega Man 1, 2 and 3 the series did go downward (Kinda like running out of ideas). Not counting the X series. As a collector gotta have 'm all tho
I always felt the X series was an inferior clone. 4 is a great game, and I'm not saying the Mega Man series didn't decline, merely that it wasn't with 4 but after that the decline began.
C´mon Undertow, Mega man 4 is second best of the classic-series, it´s almost as good as Mega man 2. And I think that charged mega buster is great idea, it brigns new element to the gameplay and I really don´t understand why Capcom removed it from Mega man 9 and 10. And soundtrack of Mega man 4 is awesome. This is a very good game.
This game has Pharaoh Man! Pharaoh Man!!!! The robot master who changed the world! The best robot master of all time! Dare I say, the greatest video game character ever!? YES!! It's Pharaoh Man!
Disagree. The endgame is by far the best designed in the Nes. and while the robot master stages arent as good as 3, they are definitively better than 2. 2 has strangely empty levels really. it feels like they introduced gimmicks but forgeted to place enemies in the stages.
@@Jrdotan holy crap thanks for reminding me how awfully this comment has aged . 4 is the best in the nes series . I despise mm3 , dont know what i was going on about .....
Remember this is right after Capcom realized the success with the first 2 games, so this is the point when they started doing them annually witch is NEVER a good idea for ANY game in ANY series (Look at COD, or any sports titles) you're bound to not being able to improve or evolve the series in any way because of that annual constraint. By the times they got to Mega Man 5 and 6 the ideas we're in the trash can, they even asked kids in Nintendo Power to come up with ideas for bosses ....
I would say mega man 4 is my fav mega man game especially for the nostalgia and it being my first mega man game... I wish these "hardcore" fans would stop complaining ablut the "mega buster charge shot in my opinion it doesnt take anything away from the game it just adds more variety
the soundtrack for this one had to grow on me. i really thought it was as much of a dud as 1 and 6 but i really like it now. not anywhere near as good as 2 and 3 and i like 5 a lot better but 4 is awesome. excellent boss, enemy and level design. plus a great soundtrack. no slouch by any means. tough game BTW.
Surprised by some of the review. I always thought Megaman 4 had some of the best weapons all time. Sure, may not have Metal Blade form part 2 but Rain Flush, Flash Stopper, Dive Missile, Drill Bomb, Pharaoh Shot & Skull Shield were all a step up from the random straight foward firing weapons from part 3. Megaman 4 is the Megaman game I use most powers from.
You're complaining about the charge shot? Seriously? The element that's been a staple in the series (as well as the X games) since this game was released? And the fact that it didn't "innovate" or whatever? I guess just being another great Mega Man game wasn't enough, even though the level design was varied and fun. Toad Man had you running through rain and wind and eventually into the sewers, Ring Man had you running on rainbows and Skull Man had some kind of weird skull fortress to go through. But I guess that just wasn't enough, was it? COME ON, MAN!!! This is ridiculous! I want to like you as a reviewer, but half the time I listen to you I just want to pour battery acid in my ears! Where are TJ and Mark when you need them?!
This was the game that ended Megaman's Mega-Streak. They should have released it for SNES and hired better composers, game developers and character designers because it is mediocre and Megaman 5 and 6 are worse.
that is ridiculous, 4, 5, and 6 are all way better than the first three games, all the megaman games have good robot masters except for 3 because characters like hard and needle man just don't cut it. and what about megaman 6 having jetpack wings with no energy limit?
Not a bad review but I don't share. Usually I'm with you Derek, but I just happen to think every MM game had something remarkably special about it and I think the quality level never dropped. And the "2 and 3 are classic" thing... that's an excuse. In retrospective, 2 was just "okay". It brought nearly nothing new to the table, but had a godsent soundtrack. What'd MM2 be if played mute? 3 however? THAT was a step up. And yet to me, the "best NES MM" title belongs to the sixth and final game.
I don't like Mega Man 4, but this is still a pathetic review. It really seems like you had a rough time deciding between not liking 4 and loving it, to the point where you sound like a little paranoid of what others think.
It's a very short review and doesn't even mention the Cossack plot/attempt to make us think Wiley isn't the boss, which is one thing I like about this game. At least they did something different with it from every other Mega Man game.
Mega Man 4 > 2 and 3
There I said it.
Thank you. I totally agree.
Crazy talk
Mega Man 4 doesn't have the shitty weapons like Mega Man 2 or the stupid doc robot stages from Mega Man 3.
i agree its better than 2. but Nah 3 is too awesome
"Dropped in quality."? I think you were dropped on your head. They introduced stronger weapons, better movement (sliding), better backgrounds, awesome neon aura-lighted floors...
Mega Man 4 > Mega Man 2
Do you agree?
Drop off in quality? Bah, MM4 is the best game ever in the franchise! It's been my favorite ever since the early '90s, Just an incredible game.
... Toad Man killed you?
... I'm speechless.
this is still my favorite Mega Man game of all time!
0:48 Toad Man killed you..... FAIL!!!

MM4 quality is the best.........this is THE best MM game out all of them IMHO.
Mega Man 4 > Mega Man 2

I always thought 4 was the best. It refined everything that was great in 2 & 3. I know I'm in the minority (5 seemed to get a little stale).
In Japan, it was released in 91'. America got it January 92'.

And the series never declined completely. Just has its ups and downs
MM4 is my personal favorite of the series.
Yep, my mistake. I didn't realize that MM4 and MM5 were released in the same year here in the states!
you to remember the 8bit NES system was still very popular more popular so still had a very long good life cycle.
There are definitely some days when I prefer 4 to 3. Those are the days I don't feel like dealing with the doc robots.

Press 2 for Toad Man's pelvic thrust. :D
Agreed, my first mm game and still my fave.
Yep. 1987, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993 for the original 6 NES Megaman games.
I see how its so motivating.
Mega Man 4 has the catchiest soundtrack.
This game is tough as nails
The music is still awesome, most important part
This game has Pharaoh Man! Pharaoh Man!!!! The robot master who changed the world! The best robot master of all time! Dare I say, the greatest video game character ever!? YES!! It's Pharaoh Man!
A 1-4
B 5
E 2
F 1-3
8 years later, I’ll still stumble back to this review. Awesome
Does anyone else think the level design is obnoxious ? Personally, that's what makes this game not as good as 2 , 3 or 6 imo
Disagree. The endgame is by far the best designed in the Nes. and while the robot master stages arent as good as 3, they are definitively better than 2. 2 has strangely empty levels really. it feels like they introduced gimmicks but forgeted to place enemies in the stages.

This is the only NES Mega Man game I own. I got it from my friend by trading Adventure Island for it. He also has 2 and the rare 6.
Funny, I just picked up this game!
I love Mega Man 4. The soundtrack is pretty good.
the soundtrack for this one had to grow on me. i really thought it was as much of a dud as 1 and 6 but i really like it now. not anywhere near as good as 2 and 3 and i like 5 a lot better but 4 is awesome. excellent boss, enemy and level design. plus a great soundtrack. no slouch by any means.
tough game BTW.
ppl can say what they want about megaman 4 5 and 6 but those games were better than about 95% of other crap games on the nes
Dust man has some sweet music!
Well, Megaman 4 on the Game Boy is quite a bit better than the NES game - and the same goes for Megaman 5!
I agree with 5 but 4? Just no

One of my favorites. 5 and 6 are too easy (I hardly use the special weapons in those games because all the bosses are easy anyway).
Wasn't this released in 1991?
I love Megaman!
but in the end he beat him without getting hit once.
Maybe it was all part of the show...
Well, than you should have bought the 3DS.
dont like the megabuster then dont use it

The Mega Man for GB are way too diferent from the NES games. Don´t compare, that make no sense.

You have to be very lazy to think the second trilogy is worst than the first one lol
Wanna get this for my vita! XD Megaman 4 on the go? I think yes!
ALL HE DOES IS MAKE IT RAIN!
@0:18 look at megaman's face... "not willy again =___= "
uhhhh.... megaman 6 isnt rare :3
mega man is such a great game series XD
Did he cut his hair?
Nice review, I like these nes magaman games!
Out of curiosity, are you playing with an auto-fire button? :) You shoot pretty fast
toad man making it rain

No Mega Man 2 has more balanced weapons, better level design and better music. But the controls were perfected in Mega Man 3, so you do have a point
