This is a very cool demo! Seeing it side by side with the SNES version was impressive as it relates to color use. I always was jealous that this never released on the Genny back in the day, and even though I have the SNES rom and can play it whenever I want, it's just fun to see it ported over after all these years. I know it's just a demo, but if it does ever get finished, I'd definitely put together a physical copy to sit proudly on my shelf with the rest of my Genesis games. Compliments to the talented team working on this and so many other cool projects these days...you guys are awesome!

The MD version looks fantastic. Looks higher res and uses the full screen as well, no thick black bars that plague every super nes beat ‘em up and 1v1. Also love how there’s more enemies on the screen too than the super NES version. I absolutely adore the super nes version and for so long held it in highest regard as the best game based on a movie. I’m so excited to play the MD version.
the snes version can be hacked to add more enemies on screen. like turtles in time arcade edition(can do 9-10 enemies and 2 players no problem), final fight 2 readjusted, pirates of dark water, etc. my guess is it can handle at the very least 5 or 6 enemies on screen with no slowdown, because there are parts when there at 3 or 4 bystander characters running around, with 2 enemies or so also on screen. i'm sure it can be 2 player hacked as well
@@Rodzilla97No. This game uses 8x8 and 16x16 sprite cells to draw the characters on screen. The 3 enemies and 1 player completely fill the OAM registers, that is, it uses all 128 sprites to display them. Then you can't add more enemies because there is not enough space or sprites. The Mega Drive shows more flexibility in this aspect and although it only has 80 sprites, the size of these is much more varied and efficient to draw what is seen on screen, thus avoiding having to use so many sprites to show 9 enemies and 2 players simultaneously. The hack you mention for Final Fight 2 allows you to see a maximum of 5 enemies simultaneously, not 6, and the slowdowns are more than constant. In addition, the game uses 16x16 and 32x32 sprite cells which quickly causes flickering at absurd levels and continuous graphical glitches. I add that with those 5 simultaneous enemies the OAM table fills up again, you couldn't see any more enemies then. Turtles in Time completely fills the 16KB available for ALL the animations of the enemy sprites. Then up to 9 enemies have been seen in that hack but understanding that all the sprites are THE SAME in addition to having enemies of a considerably smaller size. If we extrapolate that to the Mega Drive, it could add more enemies, more varied and with more animations because its VRAM is not limited to 16KB of space for the sprite tiles that Super Nintendo does have.
You're saying more enemies on screen, but where's your bikers and where's your orchestral music? I like the Genesis, as I owned one too, but come on, let's not pretend this particular conversion is on the same level as the SNES, because it clearly isn't.
@@Longlostpuss It's a demo. Do you think MD can't put the bikers on screen? This demo has been rushed in 20 days by some fans, I don't know what more you can ask of them. MD puts more enemies on screen as you can see, MD doesn't have a maximum limit of 512 different tiles per frame that SNES does, allowing you to place a greater variety of enemies simultaneously, as well as being displayed in full screen without black bars (these bars are a symptom of necessity since it can't handle graphic transfers like MD does) and gaining a much higher horizontal resolution. MD's sound isn't orchestral? Are you telling me that with the XGM driver that puts up to 12 channels of the 4 that are PCM it can't put the orchestral music that is already in the demo? That even the clarity of the audio shown (if you look at the video) is much higher. One thing is that you like one song more than another, something totally subjective, but to judge without knowing or simply without observing seems stupid to me. At the same level? Higher! Why does the snow disappear in the SNES version while in MD it is shown all the time? I'll tell you: more limitations. The snow is formed by SNES through sprites and, when a series of enemies starts in a row where up to 3 appear, it disappears because those sprites are necessary to draw the scene. Why does MD still show snow even with 9 enemies? Because it has the sprite multiplexing capacity with which it far exceeds its limit of 80 maximum sprites on screen and allows itself the luxury of having up to 145 simultaneous sprites as this demo shows with 2 players, 9 enemies and a higher horizontal and vertical resolution.
@@allbundy432 It's not about what I think, it's about what's clearly in front of us. I can't vouch for things that simply aren't there! I don't mind if people laud the effort that's been done in a short amount of time for the MD demo, I just don't agree that in its current state that what I'm seeing and hearing on the left, is better than what I'm seeing and hearing on the right purely as an apples to apples first stage comparison. You could put 50,000 enemies on screen for all I care, the colour looks washed out (look at the poor excuse for Christmas trees in the shop windows on the MD version), there's a distinct lack of detail in the backgrounds, the intro Batmobile pursuit is missing, I could go on and on. While the SNES version was on its 3rd sub stage, the MD version was just hanging around on its first one. There's been some good examples of remasters for the MD, but this is just not a good one in my opinion. Sunset Riders, Final Fight and Street Fighter 2 Hyper Champion Edition is really where it's at if you want to see examples of the MD excelling. The FM synth chip is just not good at certain musical arrangements, but that is okay, each console has its own weaknesses.

The Megadrive resolution is 320x224 and the SNES is 256x224, the screen is stretched to fit 4:3, for that reason the sprites are wider - they are deformed - this happens in most SNES games. They are not bigger. If you have a bigger canvas than another and you draw sprites of the same size, they appear smaller in proportion to the canvas. Also the Megadrive version goes to 60 FPS, handles many more sprites - it even has 11 and the two Batman ones - and at the moment it is only an incomplete beta of the first stage.

@@cryengine_x It is a fact that SNES has problems handling many large sprites and transferring tiles to the vram, in addition to its resolution limitation. There is no other problem. One console is better designed than another because it is more flexible and that is why people continue programming for it.

MD versión looks, sounds and plays fantastic. The only thing i would correct is sprites size. As a result of the increase in horizontal and vertical resolution the sprites seems smaller than in the SNES version. Specially, characters seem too slim. See this is what Im talking about, why is it, if the SNES who was supposed to have more/better sprites capabilities than the Genesis (128 sprites on-screen vs 80, with 32 per scan line vs 20), that the Genesis is killing it right here why way more sprites? Can the devs answer that? And can you's make a SNES Contra HARDcorp? And arent these demos kind of a cheat? As they can use all the memory/RAM that they need and have all the time needed to make it all happen. Not to mention, they get to use modern day tools.
Sorry if this is is too long. I'm not a developer but what I know is the Genesis can have less sprites on screen but it can draw them in way more different sizes and shapes unlike the SNES that has only square shaped sprite shapes, I think only 4 sizes IIRC. So with less sprites you can create characters (All are done with various sprites to form bigger complex ones) keeping the usage low, more free sprites. It's not about quantity. Why cheating? ROM size was a problem back then because it was expensive, if they had the chance to use bigger ROM they had used it for sure, money was the only real limitation. And for modern tools, they had their own back then but of course with years and years of experience and development we have reached to those levels of getting the most of the console, something they didn't because they had a budget and a time limit to develop games as a business. Modern development soft is awesome but it still is limited to the console capabilities, it's not like they are using extra hardware to go beyond, it's all done in code and from collective understanding of the console. Also, the Genesis use very common hardware and chips from back then, almost every arcade and a lot of PC used the same arquitecture of 68000+Z80 processors and FM+PSG sound so all the knowledge of all those systems have helped to understand the console, for example there's recent game projects with simultaneous develompent for the Genesis, Neo-Geo and AMIGA computers because they all share similar arquitectures.

@@danmakuman What you said about the different sprite sizes and therefore shapes is what seems to make all the difference in the world here cuz thats what I've read too. As a snes fan its nice to see this version on the genesis, the music and graphics are very nice even though the music is not the same as the original it definitely takes advantages of sega's sound chip, as a programmer though, this is must be a crazy project to work on, a lot of work. I dont know if it will ever be done, but if it was me i would add some different things instead of trying to make a 1:1 port.
I would love to see someone finish this port. Maybe make it a Sega CD version, to add in a Batmobile level? I'd make it myself, but I'm not a game developer.
Both consoles are equally as enjoyable to me I have both side by side and just switch from one to the other both have thier own merits and advantages I don’t always want to play street fighter or mk on a snes I think the sega versions make up in smoothness and framerate but have weaker sound and that’s not a hardware fault as such but how the sounds were implemented
I just played and honestly I didn't felt impressed, first the song for the 1st stage get's old pretty quickly I think is better choice as a menu sound, then the gameplay is off when batman throw the enemy to the ground is too fast and doesn't feel the "slam" feels weak, and batman voice is annoying and finally the lack of items and the bomb, overall the graphics look fantastic but hopefully the rest get fixed.
It's cool and all, but the color did take a hit. Of course the Genesis version would be nore optimized being made in the modern day with all the time in the world to finish it. I think it's neat this is getting ported, but it isn't like magically invalidates the actual complete game experience of the SNES original. Hell, I like the NES one more than either of these.
I cannot believe how a Genesis version could beat SNES with so much improvement with an inferior hardware... Konami could show the muscle of Genesis at time even with Batman, not only with Sparkster... Is the demo got some improvement in cartridge? Because is almost impossible to compete VS SNES without it...
@ItsPaybackTime89 The colors and the SFX-BGM says the opposite. The FM synth sound chip in the Genesis just doesn't suit this style of game at all. Where are the bikers? It's looking like one of those ports that's just a bridge too far. Interestingly, this was one of the games where I felt the SNES started to pull away from the Genesis. It really started with the Star Wars games, that's when you could really start to see the capabilities of the SNES coming into fruition, particularly in the sound. This game is just another illustration of that.
The genesis music is gritty and digital, while the snes music is muffled and whimsical, most snes soundtracks sounded like whimsical fairy music, that's why it was best known for RPGs 🧚
@@Super_Croptendo Not really true is it, the SNES chip imitated real musical instruments, there was nothing whimsical about the games musical arrangement. While the bit-rate could be on the lower side on some games than others and come across as slightly unclear or just not loud enough, the console overall produced some really good results 90% of the time. It's very rare that anything sounded muffled. It had a Sony sound chip there that was compared to CD quality at the time! Particular games of note: - Stars Wars Super Ghouls 'n' Ghost Super Castlevania IV Castlevania Dracula X Secret of Mana Yoshi's Island F Zero Starfox basically any Konami game Could go on all day really. The Genesis is actually the one guilty of having the lower bit-rate muffled, tinny sound in most of its games. The only exception would be the games developed by SEGA's own in-house teams. The multiplat stuff, for the most part, sounded horrendous.

The MD version aims at being closer to the arcade original than the SNES version, I bet those voices were also present in the arcade release
@@MasterControl90original Batman Returns is not an arcade port. There is no Batman Returns arcade game, this is an original snes beat'em up
The MD version looks fantastic.
Definitely enjoy the audio in the unofficial Genesis port.
@gallinadeyeso9638 Good to know.
Also the Megadrive version goes to 60 FPS, handles many more sprites - it even has 11 and the two Batman ones - and at the moment it is only an incomplete beta of the first stage.

looks like the perfect game for my sega arcade stick
Well, that intro music in Genesis is from DEVIL'S CRUSH...
This is a HUGE release for the Genesis; it looks like an arcade game of the caped crusader, spacially with the art of the life and the 2 player option; the SNES version is still supreme, but I can't wait to see the final Genesis ready!
I want to see the 2P-mode on Genesis. That was my dream all the years.

@@philmuller-geib3361 ...Except the throne in Valhalla is more affordable! 🤭
I don't remember this on the Genesis 😂😂😂
MD versión looks, sounds and plays fantastic. The only thing i would correct is sprites size. As a result of the increase in horizontal and vertical resolution the sprites seems smaller than in the SNES version. Specially, characters seem too slim. If sprites were bigger, the result would be much more impressive visually in my opinion (even if it would be necesseray to decrease a bit number of enemies on screen). Hope this fantastic project will be finished someday
Snes version has a cropped resolution and letterboxed display screen, the graphics were stretched. The genesis version fixed that.
@GenesisStillDoes if we accept SNES characters are streched then, the characters in MD should be taller. And that is not the case.
@@GenesisStillDoes Just like in Mortal Kombat 2. Wait
@@pablopena1474 The snes screen display is zoomed in. The sprite's aren't actually taller.
@@GenesisStillDoes I agree with you. The characters height is he same in both games. What i said is, that as result of the higher resolution in the MD version, characters seem smaller (although they are of the same size) and I would make them bigger to increase the visual impact. Even if It would be necessary to reduce a bit the number of simultaneous enemies on screen. The game looks fantastic, It is only my own opinion. Regards!
You need Rain Man to count the number of enemies onscreen in the Genesis version! Awesome! 😎
@@yod1213 audio and color palette wise I've always seen SNES as king but when it came to sprites on screen the SNES fell short compared to the Genesis. Thanks for sharing the technical info regarding the sprite count 'supposedly' being better than the Genesis but in real application it never seemed so.
@@danmakuman What you said about the different sprite sizes and therefore shapes is what seems to make all the difference in the world here cuz thats what I've read too. Nintendo was bound to just two sprite sizes onscreen (a big and small sprite but damn what a difference that makes).
As for cheating with the bigger ROMS, I meant it as of course if SNES had access to todays sized ROMS the output would be better.

Another game that proves the obvious. SEGA Megadrive is better than Super Nintendo
"Different" rather than "better". Each system has its strengths.
😂 the number of ports transferred to the Megadrive nowadays of classic SNES games are some sort of coping mechanism for Sega losing the console war 😂 Long live the SNES!
What are you taking about? snes fans try to do the same with several genesis game's but couldn't , cause snes CPU is too weak 😆

I like the genesis gritty digital remix rather than the muffled whimsical snes original.
I would love to see someone finish this port. Maybe make it a Sega CD version, to add in a Batmobile level? I'd make it myself, but I'm not a game developer.
@@Super_CroptendoJust like in Rock n Roll Racing
@LincolnAbraham-g4l Snes rock n roll racing is cropped, you can see more of the race track on genesis.
@@Super_Croptendo You mean "Racing" because in Genesis the "Rock n Roll" is absent 🤷
Plus these tech demos seldom get completed. Why get excited for something that's probably just gonna be abandoned?
And yet the Super Nintendo still won the console war...go figure.
I don't remember this version of batman returns on the genesis, only on the snes.
Great classic beat em up
from the intro alone it's CLEAR the supernes is the SUPERIOR version
Mega Drive had a few more sound effects and SNES had a larger variety or enemies.
Batman Returns teve 2 versões no Mega Drive?
No, only the version you played this is a new demo.
I had a Sega "Mega Drive", as it was called here, and no f*cking way that console could do these graphics back then.
Why not? You think the mega drive evolved like darwinism or something? Maybe by 2045 it can play Dreamcast games!
The color
I cannot believe how a Genesis version could beat SNES with so much improvement with an inferior hardware... Konami could show the muscle of Genesis at time even with Batman, not only with Sparkster... Is the demo got some improvement in cartridge? Because is almost impossible to compete VS SNES without it...
Snes is inferior hardware, the slow CPU .
@ItsPaybackTime89 The colors and the SFX-BGM says the opposite. I talk as fast-paced-games Lover that loves Sega, I clear this out, but that got a Gaming PC that got a strong processor with a mere GTX 1660, so I know that processor is not all that matters.
Particular games of note: -
Stars Wars
Super Ghouls 'n' Ghost
Super Castlevania IV
Castlevania Dracula X
Secret of Mana
Yoshi's Island
F Zero
Starfox
basically any Konami game
Could go on all day really.
The Genesis is actually the one guilty of having the lower bit-rate muffled, tinny sound in most of its games.
The only exception would be the games developed by SEGA's own in-house teams. The multiplat stuff, for the most part, sounded horrendous.
