Oh yessss on gassing out. Yrs ago I decanted into an Alclad jar and didn't let it gas out. I go to use it AFTER shaking. As soon as I cracked the cap...kaboom...I'm now a bright yellow lacquer not to mention the fridge and my workbench. Lesson learned
Great demo how to... I've been decanting for a few years off and on, never thought of using silly putty and I have it right on my desk! Taping the jar sure keeps is neat too!

I tried using a pipet since the bulb is end is some what curved.. and I used just the plain testers thinner… a couple areas ended up looking a lil heavy but the model turned out great all done in 3 colors of the old model masters.. on a diecast mobius 68 100 always can learn a new way of doin things ! Decanting paint is a must for the older paints we have where the propellant is gone or a very clogged nozzle. Follow the instructions to use a pin hole and then either enlarge the hole or cut the top off. MUST USE A PIN HOLE!! NOTHING LARGER OR YOU'LL GET PAINT EVERYWHERE. I have used 30+ year old paint this way.
I've done it for years.I found hot gluing the straw around the nozzle makes for a much cleaner transfer of can to bottle. Just one more tip to try. Cheers.
I remember watching this video awhile ago,went out and bought a bunch of cans, ordered from Amazon a bunch of glass jars . I decanted all my cans, labeled the jars......and never ever used any of it . Lol. I like the idea that you have unlimited choices of colors and the ability of mixing colors.

That's almost exactly how I do it too, I use just a short section of straw without the bend though, and don't bother with the respirator and fan since everything is pretty sealed, but you can never be too safe I guess.
I've been exactly doing this for years now, try taking the little round spray tip out of the spray nozzle itself, and replace it with a suitable size brass or aluminum tube, and spray right into a bottle or the airbrush. So much easier and safer. Thanks for the video!
Great demo. I decant & spray through my airbrush because I want a more scale thickness of paint layers. I will often thin the paint even further with thinner depending on what I'm spraying.
I have wondered for a while if/how this can be done (all pun intended 😁) because I was under the impression that if you sprayed paint into another container, it would try to dry up on you. I've now seen a video of the "cut the can" method as well & I think I like this one better. Just got my first airbrush set for 20 bucks a sparmax 3 and compressor. Im going to try this out so i can paint some camera parts with hammered paint since i cant find it in airbrush form.
You don't need to have a straw go to your auto paint store ask for paint mixing cups take a rag or towel put it over cup leave a hole so you can spray in to cup on the side so paint runs down the side

I'm gonna have to start saving my RX bottles too, though I'm not convinced that those seal up THAT tightly. Do you just use them prior to a build or do you actually store paint in those? I've been window shopping bottles on Amazon. I'd really like to get rid of these cans I've collected in a plastic tote since my revival into the hobby. It appears I've collected more tools, paint and kits than I've actually built. *shakes head in shame* I plan on changing that though. I'm thinking I'm gonna get in on the '32 Ford build. Great video it almost seemed like you were talking about me I'm one of those guys that punches the whole in the can don't like doing it with anything but the large cans that I used frequently because of losing the paint but have had pretty good luck with canning jars for storage I've only had one incident where I got a little too big a hole and the video was called explosion in the paint booth and I also did a video on decanting my paint
@@bkmodelcars BK you can take a small awl and punch any can the hole needs to be at the top and let the can sit over night once you got the hole done then the paintence kicks in let the air out slowly! Still can't understand why nobody has come up with an A/C style rig to tap the cans lol 😆

I have an old can wrap that has a pressure valve is use to release the pressure from can. Then I use a pair of tin snips to cut the can open to pour into a 8oz jar. I leave it a little loose to Vegas about 5 min. Then close it up. I don't know if the still make those can pressure valve wraps anymore. Mine is about 30 yrs old or so.

Thanks Michael!! Put a few drops of thinner in the bottles and shake them occasionally. I usually use it up within about 6 months. Enamels dry out a little quicker than lacquers. Good luck and have fun!!
I have found, depending on the enamel brand, a little lacquer thinner does not hurt. I would however test it before painting. With Testors enamels I prefer Testors enamel thinner but I have use a spot of lacquer thinner with it as well with no difficulties. Many thanks for watching!!

Mr Mark - here’s a thought to ponder- do you think the propellant in a rattle can affects the paint’s composition (once infused) and influences its final finish quality (better or worse), after “decanting” it, or is the propellant no longer a factor, after releasing it to the atmosphere? I personally do not think its much of a factor. Lacquers and enamels gas out at different rates but for me airbrush about the same. (maybe a touch more air pressure when applying lacquers) Thanks for watching bro!!

Thanks Dustin!! It really depends on the paint I’m using and how long they have been sitting. Within and hour of decanting enamel I usually shoot then without thinning. Lacquers I thin just a touch. Personally I find most paints dry quicker when thinned. I think it’s sometimes personal taste. Play around with it and have fun!!
I’d like to suggest just setting the lid on the bottle to keep any dust or floating particles in the air out of the decanted paint. DON’T tighten the cap just set it on the bottle and put it in a safe place (spray booth) for a full day. The paint will not dry out…. been doing that for years.

Hello from Argentina, I have to empty a spray paint for to use what is left with a brush, how long after emptying it into a container should the paint be left open so that the gas is removed? The paint does not dry leaving it open? Thank you
Hi!! I let enamels sit about an hour. Brand of paints my differ. The same goes for different brands of lacquer paints. Lacquers usually gas out quicker. In my climate, about 20-30 minutes. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!!

Thanks brother!! I try to shoot everything at 15 to 20 psi that I have decanted. The only thing I shoot at less psi is Alclad II lacquers. Those I shoot at about 7 psi. Have fun!!
I do not put the cans IN the dehydrator but on top to warm them up. I would not recommend putting them inside at all. I place the can over one of the top vent holes for an hour, shake them up again while warm for about two minutes then decant. Many thanks for watching!!

Since I already have some krylon paint. I wanted to paint the zipper instead of spray painting it. And I was just trying to see how to get it out of the spray can. Lightly sand the zipper with a mild sanding medium so the paint has something to “bite” into. Also try an enamel or acrylic-enamel. In my experience they seem to hold up on plastic a little better. Also, have you considered dye? A little sanding again for bite. Then let them soak overnight (or longer). A slower messier progress but effective. Good luck and make it fun!!

I paint guitars for fun, cars when I need to, bicycles, restoration things like that. I found a complete entie airbrush kit at a yard sale the other day every single thing you need he said it was in a big box yet to try it. I'm not sure what I'm gonna do with it yet but I see lotta great ideas here on UA-cam. I don't really care for the Cholo style shirts or anything like that or the big eagles on cars or anything like that. But don't you have to be some sort of an artist, to do art?
What you are doing sounds fun brother!! I have used an airbrush for about 35 years. I like the control of the air and paint flow. As far as painting art or designs, as much as I practice I still have to use stencils for it to look right. LOL (Not that kind of artist myself)

What psi would you recommend spraying this if you were using a paasche h airbrush with the larger 5 needle? Thank you in advance.

Some spray paints do not stop spraying when they're upside down I've noticed recently

Thanks Doug! I’ve never tried it, but thinned right I think it should work just fine. Be sure to prime the plastic or resin before painting.

Sure Perry! I've used this method with several brands. Make use you let lacquers sit for an hour or so to gas out before airbrushing.

Since I already have some krylon paint. I wanted to paint the zipper instead of spray painting it. And I was just trying to see how to get it out of the spray can. But thank you for getting back to me. What I would do everything you said thank you.
Yes. It will be thin so it my take multiple coats.

@@MarkBatsonHobbydude007 thank you okay I hope it works out for me. Or do you know any paint that I can use that will bond to plastic. And fabric saying that the zipper has fabric around it.
Lightly sand the zipper with a mild sanding medium so the paint has something to “bite” into. Also try an enamel or acrylic-enamel. In my experience they seem to hold up on plastic a little better.
Also, have you considered dye? A little sanding again for bite. Then let them soak overnight (or longer). A slower messier progress but effective. Good luck and make it fun!!

Thanks for the tutorial on decanting spray cans. A safety tip, if you are planning to open the can. Do not use the electric can opener in the kitchen...your wife will kill you!!! lol

I paint guitars for fun, cars when I need to, bicycles, restoration things like that. I found a complete entie airbrush kit at a yard sale the other day every single thing you need he said it was in a big box yet to try it. I'm not sure what I'm gonna do with it yet but I see lotta great ideas here on UA-cam. I don't really care for the Cholo style shirts or anything like that or the big eagles on cars or anything like that. But don't you have to be some sort of an artist, to do art?
What you are doing sounds fun brother!! I have used an airbrush for about 35 years. I like the control of the air and paint flow.
As far as painting art or designs, as much as I practice I still have to use stencils for it to look right. LOL
(Not that kind of artist myself)
