Hey Jon - I'm a 67 yo female in the US and have been watching your videos for a while. You already gave me the idea to put a kit like this together. I watched other videos to find out the best tools so that I have what I need when I need it. Many of the tools are the same ones that you selected. I have other kits for different things but has been so helpful.

Nail set/punch to remove door pins. 5n1 painters tool would be advised for scraping, spreading fillers and prying things into and out of place, chiselling or even digging. Cyanoacrylate superglue a couple feet of strong fine wire. A bubble Level. You have room for all of these items.

1 meter of 2,5mm copper cable
At least 1 15 cm extension for rattle bits (preferebly 2 stong ones) for Car bateries ect.

Just a quick word of advice on the voltage detector. Never rely on the battery level indicator. Test it on something you know is live then use it to check the thing you're working on. Once it shows that the thing is dead, go back to your known source and confirm the detector still works. I teach apprentices and we drum this into them. TEST-USE-TEST 😁

I hope you don’t teach apprentice’s that, you should never use a non contact detector to prove dead. Test-use-test is standard but it should be with an approved voltage indicator (VAT in Europe) and ideally a proving box.

@@hotdeal3156 they use them as an additional layer of safety.

What I like about your videos in particular is how naturally descriptive you are compared with other UA-camrs. As a blind person I rely on description so that I know what the presenter is talking about; and your natural, conversational way of doing it is an example to most others whom I have found appallingly lazy and lacking in that department. For me, this makes your presentations not only helpful but easy to listen to.

    Fantastic kit.
For fun, I've been putting together what I call the "Bilbo Baggins Burgle Bag," which includes all sorts of tools needed for minor repairs and for potentially getting into and out of things (no criminality intended, of course).
It includes many of the same tools (or analogous), with the addition of a few things like a small lockpick kit, a silcock key, a "janitor" key (for accessing stall doors and soap, toilet paper, and paper towel dispensers), a handcuff key, an Allen key set, and a few other bits and bobs.
You have some great suggestions here that I will definitely be adding to the kit.

As a proud Brit now living in the states, I look forward to your videos each week as a a dose of home as well as gadget glory - thanks for this one Jon, been wanting one like this for a while.
I have the saw handle kit and it is awesome, and so surprisingly cheap to find. I would include:
-Hand drill with space in handle for drill bits (I can get 3-4 in mine, depending on size.
-EDC fans utility knife, which comes with a saw blade and a good size multitool style blade on the side that swing out, as well as a double ended, ball joint 1/4 inch screwdriver head for about $15,
    - Klein tools awesome screw driver socket sets that have bits in the handle, telescoping driver length and reversible colour coded sockets that slide over the screwdriver blade. Available in stubby (with 2 reversible socket heads(3/8 +11/32 & 5/16 +1/4) and 6 bits in the handle, or full size with and extra reversible socket head (1/2 +7/16) and 12 bits in the handle - they’re a much cheaper option to the Wera set

Klein tools has a non-contact voltage detector that goes down to 12 volts which is useful when working on cars in electronics, in addition to that the NCVT-3P has a flashlight built into the tip so you can see your way around the dark shadows of junction boxes

I like the Martindale NC4 for the same reason. I don't often come across low voltages but the higher sensitivity is nice to help find the lives that are enclosed making them harder to detect, before swapping to the other settings to follow individual wires.

Such a well thought out kit. I’ll be updating mine after watching this.
Four more things I keep in my kit:
    1. 20’ roll of Forj: Thermoplastic tape (for temporarily repairing broken odd shaped items)
    2. Surgical alligator forceps 5"-6" (bc I always drop small screws into tight spaces)
    3. Broken screw extractor set (for kits with a cordless drill/driver)

Not sure what all you have access to in the UK, but in the States Milwaukee sells a “fastback” 6n1 utility knife with a built in #2 Phillips and flat head screwdriver in it. It’s really great and durability is fantastic as well. Use mine daily for years.

I dont normally watch these kind of EDC type videos. I tend to see them as fairly repetitive and too focused on the fetishization of stuff as oppsed to skill building. However, I clicked on the video because you look a lot like one of my favorite professors from college, and I was feeling kind of nostalgic. This video was great. Everything was well though out. Even though my kit would be a little different I really like you approach to yours. And that hacksaw handle is fantastic. I'm a union electrician in the States, and we have a tool list with the tools that we need to provide for work. Hacksaws are on the list. They're never used because band saws are so much more productive, but we still have to have them. A holdover from the 80s I imagine. It forces everyone to have bags bigger than they need or want just to accommodate the saw. I think that handle can be my work around though.

Another great video that I watch for ideas. When visiting my mother, I used to take my crammed Stanley cantilever toolbox weighing in at around 40 lbs, from which I can carry out most DIY jobs that don’t need specialist tools, but far too heavy to lug about into and out of my car, so I put together a comprehensive tool kit which is my go to quick grab bag which I take with me in case it’s needed when visiting family or away for a weekend, using a Maxpedition Beefy. Kitted out it weighs around 3 lbs, and additionally to the array of tools inside, I carry a pair of gloves kept in place by the Molle straps on the back.

It obviously contains mainly engineering tools with spanners, sockets, driver, and even a bunch of cable ties. Fortunately, I've only needed to use it a couple of times, but it's comforting to have. It fits in a small bag strapped to the passenger seat. 👍

Honestly, this is a fantastic kit. I myself have a couple similar kits for various tasks and I appreciate the hunt for that perfect compact tool for the job. I think your selections are great, many of them I have myself, a couple of them I have never seen before. The Leatherman tool bag is awesome and now I want to get one!
I will say though, I feel like your kit could benefit greatly from a small prybar, and a simple 6" stainless steel flat prybar would easily fit, taking up very little space.

Well done for pointing out the limitations of the volt detector. Too many people use them beyond their capabilities. But if you want to give one a quick test and see if it's still got battery life, just rub it on your clothing and the static will set it off.

Very Clever and thoughtful. The stubby hammer looks like it can be adapted to an extension handle that could be held in with a pin running through the hole at the bottom of the stubby handle. This would give the proper leverage for driving bigger nails and pulling stubborn nails.A small VOM would be a handy addition.

Swap out the sharpie for a double sided one. Same size but offers fine Point as well. An Altoids type tin will hold a variety of screws, nails, and even a couple nuts and washers that might save you some time. As always, love your videos.

  • @loupfeu
    @loupfeu Місяць тому

I hope you're fine. I'd say your kit is pretty much complete, of course we all have a different approach when we want to build or repair things of normal life. I suggest a folding 1/2" wood chisel & a few drill bits with 1/4" hexagonal tips. At 1/2" wide the wood chisel won't be too wide to remove wood, plastic, glue in major cases & for in door frames hinges, etc. Drill bits with 1/4" hex tips can help make holes or pre-holes for screws with srewdriver ratchet handle or ratchet itself. A small Philips tip on screwdriver & a hammer blow can make a center punch mark on metal before drilling. Yes it's slow but it works like a handle drill & a smaller bit can open the way for a bigger one. :)

I have a ton of tools, but there are some excellent new ones you show that I haven’t seen before. I have the knipex pliers already, but not too many of the others. Love those scissors and top reading tape measure, and the compact hacksaw especially, etc. The fluke tools are first rate quality.
The only suggestions I can make are to also add a sharpie for writing on dark surfaces, they make them in both silver and copper colors, and they work on black metal or rubber surfaces where the standard black won’t. (?) And the only improvement I can suggest over the Ox is the Milwaukee Fastback utility knives, especially the “6 in 1” tool with side cutter and bit driver, etc. Really great value at about $15, and I have three of them scattered about, although the locking blade on the Ox is a nice feature.
I notice most of the bits you show are different than the standard 1/4” bits you see in the US? Not sure if they’re proprietary UK with a kind of “skirt” to them? Hopefully they’re interchangeable.
Thanks again for an excellent video, I’m happy to improve my own car kit with these suggestions. 👍

Hey Jon, 1st off I love your videos and enjoy every one that you post. I am in the states and have a similar kit in both my vehicle and my wife's and it comes in handy ALL the time! I'll be adding a few bits thanks to this video, but I would say looking at your kit I think the socket wrench is way to small, and same can be said for the screw driver (especially if you're working on a car.) I love the bit/socket kit you have in there I would just add a bigger socket wrench and the Klein Tools 32559 6-in-1 (which will work with all those bits I believe.) Also, a pair of nitrile gloves and a pair of proper work/mechanic gloves. And the last one would a little bit of plumbers epoxy (kinda like your tape but really great for metal.) Overall I think you made a beautiful and useful tool kit and you inspired me to add a few pieces to mine. Cheers mate! Keep making these awesome videos!

A nice complete toolkit, I already had most of these, bought some to test. The only thing I wouldn’t recommend is the flashlight. It has such a focused beam, if standing it up on a shelf or whatever it always seems to miss what I want to light up. Haven’t used the headband much.

Thank you for the hard work on getting all this together. Man, a lot to go through. I do like the Leatherman case, but I think I'll keep using my over the shoulder case. Its bigger which luckily is needed because here in the U.S. we have a mix of Metric and Empirical measurements. Empirical/Metric tape measure seem to be at least a minimum of 0.75" in thickness, (forgive my emierical mind) and I do like the Tool-Check-Plus systems but will probably have to purchase both Metric and Empirical sets. I do like Self-Amalgamating Rubber Tape recommendation. I'll definitely use the credit card trick to save space. I do like the ratchet screwdriver, but will have to save up for that one. A soldering iron is something I reach for a lot. But Weller makes some compact propane ones that should fit in the kit nicely. Again, thanks for the recommendations.

The Metco ratchet driver is cool, but not exactly safe if you work with anything that has electricity. I use the Williams ratchet screwdriver which is the same as the Snapon, but at 1/3 the price, and it has a plastic handle. The Wera tool kit is cool too, but I went with the Icon set that comes in the little red box, and also got the icon 1/4 inch sockets in metric and SAE. I put the sockets in two small zippered bags. A lot more tools, for about the same amount of money, and the Icon ratchet is a whole lot better. I do like that saw. I’ll probably get one of those.

Your kit is brilliant. I might include a Stanley 7in wonder bar as it requires little room, but will greatly extend the kit. This inclusion might allow for some variance in hammer selection, too.

Great video Jon! I did a super organised compact toolkit a few years back but have some great new tools to add and I think you would love it.
Very impressed by the ToolLan 8in1 though I will be getting that one asap 🎉
The Metmo is nice too but a trickier to justify 😅😅

A while ago I got a similar saw handle. I found it useful to get push saw blades for it, while most tool blades cut on the pull stroke. It just felt more stable and controllable while making cuts by hand. If a blade cuts on the pull stroke I prefer it to be a thin blade which is removing less material per tooth, which again doesn't match most tool blades.

Very nice kit. I put together something similar with many of the same tools using a Veto ProPac bag. Very handy to drag around depending on what I am planning to work on, I may swap a few things out (like if I plan on installing outlets I'd add wire strippers, connectors, a plug tester, and a real voltage tester). Only drawback to a kit this great is cost- When I look at what I've put into this kit I realize it gets expensive really quickly especially if you add Wera, Knipex, Fluke and Gedore tools....of course, these tools are actually a pleasure to have in my hand so it's worth it to me personally.

Great video! While I don't think I have any exact kit as yours, as you get pretty much in the details that are not relevant for me, I do have some kits inspired by yours and I have bought some products from your links as I have never knew I needed them before. From the producst I have found from your videos, I think the RovyVon A8 Gen4 is my favorite. I also have the A28 but the size of the A8 is just impressive. Thank you for your videos and I am wishing you all the best.

One other thing I carry in my “Mr Fix-it” tool kit is a soldering iron. It’s a regular main powered iron, but have wondered about swapping to a gas powered one. Especially useful when you’re working outside.

i once worked for a company that distributed Tengtools, used in garages etc. but they also have / had really small ratchets etc. could be worth a while to look at. it is Very, very, very strong. Mini ratchet still working well after 24 years.

Excellent video. Still building my travel tool kit and there are some excellent products you mentioned here. One thing I would add to any kit are zip ties or even velcro ties. They take up little space and have many uses for unexpected situations. Plus one on the light. I have a similar setup with wuben light that also works head head band.

Very useful sollection. I'd allow myself a little more space in my Kit, but some ideas of yours will probably end up in there as well. I really like that saw handle, never seen something like that before that is so universal.

Good idea with a smaller/compact tool kit sleeping in the car. If i am called for help (reasons obscure since i am completely worthless) i always pull my old rusty metal tool box from the cellar and it is well over 20 kg ;) Do EDC, but it not include anything more complex than a small SAK, band aid, alcohol for disinfection, hex bit holder and a Goofy Pez Dispenser. 😊

I always love your set ups Jon and this one is no exception. If I would try to add something to your selection of tools it would be a pick, and a small pry bar. Just food for thought, lately I tend to like more the pass through ratchet socket set than the standard one but I guess there is no room if you use the wera tool check plus.

This is very useful. I have done this with a flex drill bag I got when I bought the drill.
It fits a 12oz hammer and the Bosch drill. it has the side pockets for easy access to pliers and hand drivers etc. this to me is edc. Because everywhere I go my car is there.

I know rachteting screwdrivers are great, I love mine! But for a kit like this have you looked at the SabreCut SCRS01 4-in-1 saw and bitdriver. It's non ratcheting but you already have the mini Wera. It also only takes reciprocating saw blades, but you can store a few extra, it removes 1 handle from the kit, so you can add something else. I also love my 4-in-1 double boxratchet from Proxon number 23236.

I don’t get all the hate online for the Wera compact. Yes it’s really expensive. But the quality and form factor are so awesome. I’ve been carrying one in my backpack for a year now and have gotten a ton of use out of it, often quite heavy duty for the size of the small wrench. If it keeps performing like this I find it well worth the price.

Thanks for the in depth review sir! I never understood the "non-locking blade" law. I would think that such laws would made for the safety of the user, in which case, the blade would be less apt to close on your fingers. ??? I am going to get one of these kits for my bike. Thanks again Mr. Gadget!

This is such a brilliant video Jon, and it's like looking into a mirror. I recently purchased the Wera Tool Check Plus, a superb addition to my grab-and-go tool kit. It is clever and lightweight design sold me immediately! I also have the Knipex Water Pump Pliers, Plier Wrench and Super Snips, but those Bolt Cutters are now on my list! I'll vouch for those Miller Scissors. I've had them for some time, and they are much better than the Klein Scissors. All my gear is snuggly held inside an Aer Slim Pouch X-Pac I picked up in the USA last year. I do like that Metmo Pocket Driver... I feel my wallet getting lighter as I type this!

Have tried a fair bit of different voltages detectors and elma volt stick wide is by far the best I’ve tried. It’s always on and have a extra more sensitive mode where it can detect voltage down to 12v or if the cable have thick insulation. and selv test and a light. Elma is the first with the no contact tester so they have some practice to 😅
