I replaced my plugs and wires on my 2005 CLK last weekend, following your excellent instructions here. I bought a Mercedes sparkplug wire removal tool - basically a 17mm openend with a bend for leverage - 16 bucks on Amazon. Everything went well, just tool about two hours. Thanks so much!
I didn't need to lift the engine. However, I had the engine mounts changed a few months ago and the engine had settled lower on those old mounts. If I had changed the plugs then, I would have had to raise the engine.
It's a good idea to blow out the spark plug recess with compressed air or brake clean before removing the plugs. This will prevent any debris from falling into the combustion chambers when you remove the plugs.
funny how nobody comments on this i know this i do that every time its only genius these common folks are airheads they want oil and sand in the chamber then they list it for sale once debris gets in then WE buy it lol cheers🍻
Hi I very helpful tips and advice. if I may. have a 1999 CLK 320 Convertible which is in need of much tender loving care. I did manage to change all the spark plugs without jacking the engine up or removing the whole air filter box. I removed just the air filter box cover. The air pipes which was necessary for another job but came in handy when eventually removing the spark plugs. I moved the screen wash reservoir to one side without disconnecting it. It was very difficult to remove the spark plug caps and is an Idea to use any Mercedes tool to remove them.
OMG, what a job that is! Sure glad my SL320 has the venerable old school straight six in it. Now I just have to figure out why my automatic dome lights don't come on. Best, Anton
get a cheap 17mm offset box spanner and cut the box end in half - it makes it a crescent, jam it on the metal bit of the wire and lever it against the valve cover to pop them out, MB tool is the same concept its a 17mm open ended spanner with offset.
Hello & thanks for this. Do you have a video on locating and replacing the PCV valve for this type of engine or 1998 c240 Sport? This would be most appreciated. God bless.
I used a 17mm wrench for removing the plug. Just pry against the valve cover and counterhold with your finger so you don't bend/break the sparkplug. Works like a charm! Did not lift he engine, just used an universal joint. However i have the 2.6L version on the 211 chassis. Had the same plugs bosch platinum F8dpp332. Any improvement after the change?
+fupabox Yeah, I ordered the 17mm wrench that is specifically designed for Mercedes V6 Spark plug wires. Perfect for a novice like me who has never replaced them before.
That;s a debate that has raged for years between mechanics . Some swear to use it some say only on the plastic boots. I've seen many rotted pins with no grease in them , but no rotted pins in connectors with grease in them . The connection on electrical pins should never be compromised by the grease as long as the pins are tight in the sockets . I'm sure the debate will remain as long as cars remain. Appreciate the comment .
Just changed my plugs in my m112 engine wow what a diff i had no previous history on when they were changed my car has 250 k on it and started to lose power and rumble quite abit. Now drives like shes brand new
Question: In the video you said to tighten to 8-10 ft pounds. I just did my switch out and used Bosch iridiums and said on the box to tighten to 18-20 ft pounds. IDid I way over tighten? I did use a little anti cease and they went right in. Also, a trick I learned which can be very helpful. I used a 3" 3/8 piece of rubber hose and slipped it on the plugs and used that to screw in by hand then pop them off. The reason is because when I used the plug socket and extension like you did...when I attached the wrench you tend to set the socket down harder on the plug and when you go to take the unit off the plug, it will separate and leave the socket on the plug. What a bitch that is to try and get off without having to remove the plug again. This way you slide the whole wrench with extension and universal down on the plug just enough to tighten..then pop the whole thing off. I have a 2003 C320 and just did my plug change at 126K. The service records I had from the guy I bought it from had them done at 60K so before winter wanted to get a jump on doing them. Also, have a 1999 C280 so I've really enjoy your videos!!
+Robert Boisvert I'm glad you caught the torque figure I said..it was a bit low..I was doing a video prior to that on a motorcycle and the torque for the smaller bike plugs is lower. on the Benz torque should be around 18-21.. I'm going to have to add a notation on the video for that , I'm glad you pointed it out..amazing that I never caught it lol..the rubber hose trick works well I agree
just finished my c280 with the same engine & i didn't have to jack up the engine nor did i use a special spark plug boot tool............even though i belive the plugs where never changed..........
very informative I own a Chrysler Crossfire and has same engine. Keep making these helpful videos. this Crossfire is my First Chrysler and Mercedes. I always wanted a Mercedes and since I got this car very cheap. My engine cooling fan does not work I tried so many things to remedy. the car does not overheat but it winter. I think someone messed up the harness. I bypassed thean to see if the fan was bad but it works I took the fan control box apart and it was not fried so guess I will find out when the weather warms up I don't have a garage. also the ac pump does not work either but has a Freon R134 charge it has pressure so guess there is something in the system. I joined the Crossfire Forum today so guess maybe they can help me
Thanks for the great tutorial. Everything worked for me. How do I get the air hose back in its place? I can not get the hose over the pipe? Is there a trick?
remove the lower engine mount bolt from that side (comes out from underneath ) and place a wide piece of wood between the jack and the bottom of the oil pan to spread out the load and gently lift the engine slightly
ok. When I disconnected the main lead to coil #5, the engine did not slow down. So I switched coil #4 with wires to the #5 spot, likewise #5 coil and wire to the #4 spot. No change to the #5 spot, thus coil $5 coil and wire now at the #4 spot worked fine and engine slowed down when I disconnected the #5 coil athe the #4 position. Question, is there a re-set for the computer somewhere?
Thanks, the door switch is confirmed good. Soo the the overhead switch may be bad OR there is a bad control module hiding somewhere. Thanks for the advice. Best, Tony
Hi, First of thanks for the video. I wish you had something for replacing the O2 sensors for a CLK320. Can't seem to find anything on youtube for this model. I have a question if you are able to throw some light on it. I am getting p0170 and p0173 codes have been advised to start off with the MAF sensor. I cleaned it with the MAF cleaner afew times but the Light won't go away. Also, my MAF was clean as a new one when i first opened it up. Could it still be the MAF, even if appears new and shiny?
THANKS A LOT FUPA, My mercedes is misfiring cylinder number 3 , hopefully it just the coil 'cause I have heard horrible things about these cars, but for me so far so good
that hydrolic lock as you say, may aid the removal of it from the plug next time. as you and I know how difficult that is. sometimes it take a different perspective to judge with. these wires won't pop off, being how difficult it is to get off in the first place, heck they are as hard to put back on. but having raced a Lancia scorpion in scca. yes plug wires do pop off from the electrical firing a high revs. still not quite sure the exact reason it does it. but the lancia scorpion runs normal plug wires, like those found on domestic cars. and they come off way easier.
The only reason I can think of them popping off is a build up of heat in the boot end , that may allow some off-gassing from the rubber which may be combustible and blow the wire off.. or just air in the boot end heats and expands the pops the boot off.. I used to burp the boots on my 911 with a paper clip to allow the air out, as they tended to come off as well.. They did make a loud pop when it happened so I never agreed when people would say they just slipped
No anti seize..the Denso tt plugs have an anti seize coating on the plug from the factory, as do most platinum and Iridium plugs..because of the lengthy plug change intervals most manufacturers use the coating to prevent seizing
changed all 12 plugs , motor is still shaking as if a spark plug is not connected. At higher RPM (3000( the bucking stops. Should I check the coils or maybe the wires (looked ok) need to be replaced. My e320 wagon (4 wheel drive) is 2000 with 186,000 miles.
John Saunders could be an ignition coil (if it is only a bit gone it won't trip a check engine light ) could also be the harmonic balancer, engine or transmission mount ..or possibly a torque converter (doubtful) I would check the harmonic balancer first since it can do thousands in damage if it goes ua-cam.com/video/DN4ufRjb3CM/v-deo.html
I have a leaking valve cover gasket on my M113 engine. I've looked at your videos but haven't seen a vid on this? Is this something that is best left for the dealer?
valve cover is pretty simple, just a lot of fiddly stuff to remove which takes quite a bit of time...I think the dealers charge about 5 hours + parts to replace the seals... I found a forum posting in my files on the procedure www.benzworld.org/forums/w220-s-class/1927017-valve-cover-gasket-breather-cover-sealant.html
Fupa is it possible to show how to trouble shoot a leaking power steering pump... i have the a 2002 ml320 with same M112 3.2 v6 and if you tell me how to check if pump is good ? as i am thinking the resovoir needs to be replaced but not sure. basically the sterring fluid leaks alot over night..thanks!
start at the reservoir and look for leaks in the hoses (this is the most common area to go bad) have the engine running while someone turns the wheel side to side, just be careful and stay away from moving parts, but you should be able to spot the leak without being too close.. if the reservoir and hoses are wet and covered in fluid . wipe them down before starting the engine and checking for the leak, it will be easier to spot if it is all dry before you start it up.. If it isn't leaking from anywhere up top then you will need to look under by the drivers side wheel... you should be able to get under and see up to the steering box without jacking the truck up.. again wipe everything down so you can see where the leak is coming from ( again it will likely be a hose where it connects to the steering box.. it is fairly rare for the box itself to leak significantly... if it drips out overnight sitting still without the car running, then the reservoir is possibly cracked, or the lower hose is leaking
thanks Fupa i will let you know how it goes. Last questions how do i know if the pump connected to the belt in functioning properly? also do you know how many hoses are connected to the pump on this platform? thanks your such a big help
Ok, thanx for sharing! Im planning a trip to Fl. and I want to have my coup in tiptop shape. I can't find a Chiltons or Hayes repair manual for my clk. Any help u can offer for the clk320, PLEASE post. Any info on the BSR, ASR lights comin' on. I changed the brake switch and nothing. Also I need to replace # two\bank two o2 sensor. Any info would b appreciated.
#2 bank 2 is the drivers side after the cat..easiest one to do..I got that code last week and ordered the sensor from "Rockauto" original Bosch ,around $60..The code was popping up every other day and I would clear it with my OBD scanner..Since the plug swap..no more code so I haven't replaced it yet,but it is about a 10 minute job from under the car..Do you also have the ABS light on ? The ABS will effect all 3 (ABS,,BAS,ASR) but if the fault is in either of the other 2 the ABS will not trip a code.
Good video...clear and concise. I just changed the plugs on my Chrysler Crossfire that has the same engine. It's a "fiddly" job that can be done by anyone with a bit of patience. You mentioned "Remove the MAP (Absolute Air Pressure) sensor." Doesn't this engine use a MAF (Mass Airflow) sensor?
My apologies, I was wrong. You were right in your reference to the MAP sensor. The engine (same as in my Crossfire) also has a MAF sensor in the throttle body. First of this type that I've seen. My old Dodge turbo only had a MAP sensor.
I did the spark plugs on my w202 c280(m112) today. my car originally had bosh platinum in it. i used bosh platinum+4, but it is running really rough and is down on power, there was no problem before i changed it though. what could it be? do you think it can be that i didn't change the wires as well or maybe the plug wires arnt on tight enough?
adrian jennings. The +4 plugs are causing the ignition problem...Mercedes doesn't recommend using them ..some cars will run fine with them, most won't...
***** others say its makes their c280 run better. do you think it could be that one of the wires had a broken piece of the spark plug jammed in it and in order for me to remove it i had to open up the wire and break parts of the rubber insulation off?
Thanks for the video! Question: When you were removing the old spark plugs, how tight/hard were they to remove? I'm getting ready to change my spark plugs and I've heard they can be hard to remove. Thanks!
Just so you understand, each coil fires two plug wires to the same cylinder. and they both fire at the same moment, so which plug wire goes to which plug is up to you. They are the same electrical point (known as a node) or the timing would be pre-firing one plug before the other. Each single coil fires both together, so you don't have to mark them.
No No.. while it is true they fire at the same time SOMETIMES.. they more often than not fire sequentially, and the sequential timing also varies. The coils MUST be plugged into the proper plug or you could actually damage your engine similar to using very low octane fuel
Fuuupa Heeelp ! Even if you left the m112 behind we still love you and think of you as a king. Do you know the spark plugs gap for the original bosch ones like the one you take out without the thinner tip. Im trying to re-use them(Im from argentina and we are poor) but im getting 2 infos.. or 0.032 or 0.038. Im going crazy and cant get the answer. Could god fupa have the answer?
A breeze on the ML in comparison... You just didn't mention the plugs will be held in there by the jaws of life itself after 16 years... Nearly gave up because I thought I was destined to destroy the head wailing on a 2ft bar on the plugs. Or was debating cutting holes in the wheel well and breaking out the 2 stroke impact ;) haha ended up all good.
+The Stiver Oh crap..original plugs !! Scary . I'm going to be doing the c240 plugs soon , and at 50k miles I'm sure their still the factory plugs. I think I'll wd them a few days prior for extra safety
+fupabox just seemed like with the heat from the exhaust a few of them didn't wanna come out. I just worked them like a tap, back and forth little by little. It's funny on the inline Mercedes engines you can have like a million miles on the plugs and they come right out since they're a little more protected.
+fupabox do you have any insight on the intake tube to the throttle body? Both the clips on mine are broken and I can't get it to stay seated on there so I'm getting a leak and poor performance. I should be able to get another tube from junkyard because it appears to be the same part for most 98-05ish m112&m113 but how are the clips supposed to work/be removed?
+The Stiver do you mean the 2 "s" shaped clips that seem to push together ? if so they do nothing and don't actually come apart..the whole clip looking assembly pulls off of the engine in one piece with the intake tube
+fupabox yeah they're clean snapped off my tube and the one that was on the only ml in the junkyard near me currently. Didn't think of looking at other m112 & m113s the other day in the yard. But since mine are broken, I just didn't understand what they clip on to on the manifold or how to release them to remove the tube
following up, been a while, so ya, you can take em out without jacking the engine, but you have to pull the valve covers off ))) I did both jobs so I had em off and it was far more manageable, but still a huge b**** as you know already ))
First list tools used in the beginning or under descriptions. Thumbs down for me because waste of time to find simple information. I don't even know socket size. Whatever!
+Ray Wash ..almost 99% positive it's the MAF sensor..make sure to get a genuine Bosch..the aftermarket units won't work...other posibilities are cam or crank sensor...if there is a check engine light *should be ) an OBD reading will show the exact one causing the issue...crank and cam sensors are a 10 minute replacement . at arount $60 for the part...Maf is 5 minutes, around $200
David Browne sup ,bro I have 03 clk 500 did you have to lift engine to remove spark plugs....
I didn't need to lift the engine. However, I had the engine mounts changed a few months ago and the engine had settled lower on those old mounts. If I had changed the plugs then, I would have had to raise the engine.
thank u sir. didn't know that it has 12 plugs ))) i hope u doing good and u and ur family r healthy. greetings from Germany
As usual great details and little tips and tricks. Thanks so much for all the knowledge you share. Your videos are great!
It's a good idea to blow out the spark plug recess with compressed air or brake clean before removing the plugs. This will prevent any debris from falling into the combustion chambers when you remove the plugs.
funny how nobody comments on this i know this i do that every time its only genius
these common folks are airheads
they want oil and sand in the chamber then they list it for sale once debris gets in then WE buy it lol cheers🍻
Thank you ! You saved me a lot of time & head scratching.
Hi I very helpful tips and advice. if I may. have a 1999 CLK 320 Convertible which is in need of much tender loving care. dome lights are most likely the drivers door switch,or the upper switch on the rearview mirror panel
Would you also be able to do a coolant change and flush video for the w208/w210? It would help a lot!
Wait a minute, I take my some of my comments back. I just noticed u have a couple of vids that will probably address my issues. Thanx : )
No problem at all.. A lot of my videos on the w202 playlist will apply as well, most of the chassis/suspension is identical
get a cheap 17mm offset box spanner and cut the box end in half - it makes it a crescent, jam it on the metal bit of the wire and lever it against the valve cover to pop them out, MB tool is the same concept its a 17mm open ended spanner with offset.
excellent idea..thanks.. I'll definitely make one ..:)
Hello & thanks for this. Do you have a video on locating and replacing the PCV valve for this type of engine or 1998 c240 Sport? This would be most appreciated. God bless.

Any improvement after the change?
What size and type of socket used to remove the spark plugs?
Excellent video !!! I think I'll wait til summer to do mine )))
Thank you for this wonderful video. I REALLY appreciate it before I replace plugs and wires on my w203.
+mechaike the suggestion someone posted of using a 17mm wrench to lever the plug caps out is a good one...better than the bent pliers. hope that helps
+fupabox Yeah, I ordered the 17mm wrench that is specifically designed for Mercedes V6 Spark plug wires. Perfect for a novice like me who has never replaced them before.
when my man says do not cross thread the plugs, he aint exaggerating . you will be sorry and never forget what you did no matter how many years pass !
amen to that
You don’t want to put the dielectric grease on the terminal only between the ceramic body and boot.
That;s a debate that has raged for years between mechanics . Some swear to use it some say only on the plastic boots. I've seen many rotted pins with no grease in them , but no rotted pins in connectors with grease in them . Just changed my plugs in my m112 engine wow what a diff i had no previous history on when they were changed my car has 250 k on it and started to lose power and rumble quite abit. Now drives like shes brand new
Love it when a cheap fix like plugs makes a big difference ... It makes the whole day so much better :)
That's why I bought the last year model of the W210 that had the M104 straight six. Much easier to get to and less spark plugs.

Can you do a video on how to lift up the engine 🙏😭. I’m having trouble with the last plug cause there isn’t much room for my wrench 😔
remove the lower engine mount bolt from that side (comes out from underneath ) and place a wide piece of wood between the jack and the bottom of the oil pan to spread out the load and gently lift the engine slightly

What is the gap supposed to be
I have a 06 ML350. It is idling high. Goes from 5 to 20 when I put it in park. And feels like it wants to stop when I'm in slow traffic.
I kind of jumped through the video and didn't notice, but did you apply anti seize to the plug threads?
No anti seize..the Denso tt plugs have an anti seize coating on the plug from the factory, as do most platinum and Iridium plugs..because of the lengthy plug change intervals most manufacturers use the coating to prevent seizing

I changed my spark plugs without lifting the engine. I took off the valve cover to do it.

thanks Fupa i will let you know how it goes.
Last questions how do i know if the pump connected to the belt in functioning properly? also do you know how many hoses are connected to the pump on this platform?
thanks your such a big help
omar s 2 hoses.. 1 in and 1 out... if the pump isn't working you will have a very hard time turning the steering wheel

The ABS will effect all 3 (ABS,,BAS,ASR) but if the fault is in either of the other 2 the ABS will not trip a code.
no, no abs light on
Good video...clear and concise.
I likely sounded like MAP, but yes, I would be the MAF
My apologies, I was wrong. You were right in your reference to the MAP sensor. The engine (same as in my Crossfire) also has a MAF sensor in the throttle body. First of this type that I've seen. My old Dodge turbo only had a MAP sensor.
Thank you. Really good video. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
How much did you day the Bosch Iridium spark plugs cost? I saw them for $7-10 at Autozone.
daimasongoodspeed at "rockauto" the Bosch iridiums are around $5.50
I’m pretty sure it’s a T30 for the bolts holding the coils
I did the spark plugs on my w202 c280(m112) today. my car originally had bosh platinum in it. i used bosh platinum+4, but it is running really rough and is down on power, there was no problem before i changed it though. what could it be? do you think it can be that i didn't change the wires as well or maybe the plug wires arnt on tight enough?
adrian jennings. The +4 plugs are causing the ignition problem...Mercedes doesn't recommend using them ..some cars will run fine with them, most won't...
***** others say its makes their c280 run better. do you think it could be that one of the wires had a broken piece of the spark plug jammed in it and in order for me to remove it i had to open up the wire and break parts of the rubber insulation off?
adrian jennings. that could be it , yes.
How does this compare to doing a W203 with the same engine? Do those have more room, or about the same?
the w203 has a bit more room
Thanks for the video! Question: When you were removing the old spark plugs, how tight/hard were they to remove? I'm getting ready to change my spark plugs and I've heard they can be hard to remove. Thanks!
the plugs themselves were fine to remove, not seized or stuck
Thanks! My next weekend project!*****

any time :)

ok, now i know the right way of removing the airbox . so many unnecessary ways its been done
what gap did you set for the plugs? My "pre-gapped" plugs are all over the place
.039 in or 1 mm
thanks!!
Thanks for the video. I have this engine in my 2000 c280. Neeed more videos for this engine in particular. Again, thanks.
How did you move the hood to the verticle position? Thanks!
there is a tap on the hood shock, push it then you can open the hood to 90 degree.
luckyyu2004
yes..luckyyu is correct ..on the passenger side hood spring..a little tab to push
Thanks guys!!
very cool, will show to some of my buddies
Thanks for the very detailed and informative video. Great job.
thank you for showing broo
How could I know on a c240 2004, which is cylinder number 3 ?
hector garcia looking from the front of the car towards the engine.. #3 is the middle one on the left
Why is the spark plug vp supposed to be
What is the spark plug gapp supposed to be
Fuuupa Heeelp !
1mm or .039 inch . Still have an M112 in my ML350 . It has the last version of the M112. A 3.7l
241 hp . Same plugs :)
@@fupabox Thank you so much ! Its nice to hear that (L With all this info you got on this motors Its nice that you still have one.
what is the firing order?
143625
You cannot make it in one hour for sure, but nice work. Use a torque wrench for recommended tourque,
3:16 this is how it work /you cant put it wrong

nice quality video..
I think i lost a lot after (i 'll be back in second) plz i iust need to c the details ....
Top lead always goes forward, bottom lead straight down.
were is the 202 ?
Thanks.
Great video, thanks buddy :-)
Called local MB dealership. They wanted $610.
Yeeeouch !!
Just like my Chrysler Crossfire
its the same engine) Mercedes engine in that Chrysler :)
thank u, gonna go do my wife's crossfire
Hi
Could you help me please ?
I'm looking for or plugging the hose,

20 mins to show how to remove power packs and plugs. It could have been 5 mins
First list tools used in the beginning or under descriptions. Thumbs down for me because waste of time to find simple information. I don't even know socket size. Whatever!
I have a 06 ML350. It is idling high. Goes from 5 to 20 when I put it in park.
