  • The way we hold our shuttle and move our hand can make a difference when tatting over tails.
This video really breaks the movements down - I hope it helps!

Thank you so much. You’re right, after practicing (and creating a small pile of mini-rings) my 83 YO finger memory ‘got it’ and I’m very happy with the new skill.

Thank you, this are great tutorials. I just unpacked my tatting from when I was taught back in 1984. I think I didn’t finish my project because I didn’t know how to join on thread. Now I’m going to finish it, but I think I’ll have to pause the videos a few times :).

Thank you for the hand movements. I have watched the way you and other tatters hold the shuttle but couldn't quite mimic. Armed with knowing it's the same way as I hold a pencil, I am ready to try it out. Just curious, I had viewed and used the Magic Thread trick first. I really like that technique. Which way do you prefer?

That's great! How did you go? Did the pencil grip help you? I use both tatting over tails and magic thread. When you start a piece it's easier to tat over your tail, - because your tail is already there. When you're coming to the end of your work, the tail doesn't exist yet - so magic loops are good as they can be put in place for when you DO have the tail.

The pencil trick is definitely helping. My wrist isn't getting sore and I can tat longer into th evening. Somehow I am also managing to turn my work to have the core thread come straight off the tip of my finger now too instead of a 90. That alone is making picots so much easier to do. Thank you so much for your videos.

Thank you! So glad you're enjoying the videos. I use both methods to hide my tails. I tat over tails at the start - because the tails are there, so IO don't see the point of putting magic loops in just to pull the tail through... but I use magic loops at the end because I don't have the tails yet. I hope that makes sense!
