- In this video I explain the process of positioning the bridge to ensure proper alignment relative to the fretboard and proper compensation so the guitar continues to play in tune for the entire length of the fretboard. "Compensation" means moving the bridge farther away from the nut than it should be mathematically, in order to keep string distortions from making fretted notes go sharp as one moves up the neck.
Gorgeous guitar !!!!
Thank you!
Very good explanation of bridge placement. Thanks Gary.
Thank you, Mike! I'm glad it made sense.
Que belo trabalho. Obrigado por compartilhar
Very nice work! Well explained and beautiful guitar.
Thank you!
Great video! I know it has been a couple of years, but if you see this I am wondering how you would adjust the distance of the bridge from the 12th if the saddle slot is angled? I have plans for a Ramirez style guitar and it uses a slanted saddle. Looking at the plans, the bridge is aligned so that the center of the slot is right on 325mm.
Great video. I noticed you skipped over the taping of the inside caul. I couldn't get my caul to stay in place with tape, ended up taping magnets to the ends of the caul and holding it in place with magnets. Worked like a charm. I also made my inside caul by pressing Styrofoam over the braces / bridge plate and using the Styrofoam as a template.
Those are good suggestions, thanks!
I really appreciate these tutorials. Thank you. I wonder if the justification for the difference in distance (nut and saddle) is due more to the fact that the strings are of different widths and thus address nut and bridge slightly differently. The saddle is angled such that the one side is closer than the 2mm and the other further away.
Yes, the thicker strings distort pitch more as you move up the fretboard, which is why they need to be moved farther back than the thinner strings.
thank you
Thank you for watching.
Hi. Really informative. Starting on my first. Why is the bridge not glued on before the body is sprayed?
It would be ery difficult to get a smooth finish around the bridge if it wad present during finishing the soundboard. Thanks for watching.
is that a shamisen u have in the back ?
Yes it is! I started building it 3 or 4 years ago but have not had time to finish it.
Hello, I am in the process of building my 3rd guitar. My first two have a bridge that is 7” wide, 1/4” thick... the blank i’m using is 6- 3/4” wide and 5/16” thick. In your opinion, will the 1/4 difference in width be ok?
Yes. I don't think it will make any noticeable difference. Happy building!
@@zimnickiguitars311 - thank you for your quick response, I appreciate it.
@@mikechallgrenguitars9189 you are welcome, I hope it helps.
Hi Gary Did you finish the Classical guitar build? Will be nice to hear it when finished..
Yes, the guitar is finished. I have more videos, but it's very difficult to find time to edit and publish them.
@@zimnickiguitars311 Hi Gary I can understand that with all the work you do. Editing and publishing videos would be difficult and time consuming to keep up with.
Where did you get the bridge?
I built it in Part 16 of this series.
