I love how this scene makes Plan 9 From Outer Space seem like a grand triumph of cinema. It's perfect in the way it captures how Wood was too close to his own process to be able to step back and see the flaws, and it draws us into Wood's own vision of his work until we too see it the way he did as he was making the movie. Edward D. Wood Jr. may have been short on actual ability as well as money but long on dreams and ambition and determination to see his vision brought to fruition. And as has been pointed out, there are quite a few directors with even less talent than Wood ever had in the biz today.
@@godzillavkk so are you saying wood's films are better than those so bad it's good films or worse? I guess worse at being that bad because they were slightly better? Damn, i gotta watch those now
@@LaLogic2 Worse. It's also hard seeing Johnny Depp as Ed because of how selfish, immature, and manipulative he is. Yeah, I don't believe his claims about Amber Heard. The timing is too accurate. She may also be selfish, but he made the first move. Even his newest film, The Professor performed poorly with critics and audiences.
Ed Wood may have made fuck awful movies but he DID have guts and vision. And it took real balls to finance movies independently in the 1950s when Hollywood was completely controlled by a few big studios like MGM, Fox, Warner Brothers etc. He was an 'Indie' movie-maker a generation before his time
Here is a man who loved cinema. Who believed so passionately in what he was doing that he never gave up or backed down even when those around him did. I find him inspiring
If you haven't already, look up Tommy Wiseau. He's very much the modern Ed Wood, and Greg Sestero's book "The Disaster Artist" says basically the same thing about Wiseau that you just did about Wood. Both are majestically bad directors.
Wiseau is kind of ruined now because he's far too self-aware and plays up his image too much. A modern Ed Wood for me would be Neil Breen. The guy not only makes terrible movies, with utter sincerity and conviction, but he also takes himself very seriously and doesn't seem to be self-aware at all. He even banned theatre chains from advertising his movies as camp films.
At least Shymalan has learned from his mistakes via The Visit and Split. Ed may have loved movies and was a nice guy, but he never learned from his mistakes. Besides, everyone in their own way is egotistical.
I love this movie SO much, that if Ed Wood never made his movies, Then my channel would not exist today. This movie is love letter to ALL filmmakers out there. "Visions Are Worth Fighting For."
i still remember being so thrilled when i heard they were making a movie about the wood-lugosi years. never thought that would happen. the results, although not entirely accurate, were excellent. it was funny but it didn't demean the characters. eddie had a big heart and it definitely shows through in this movie.
I'm a 63 yr. old drummer and I was sitting in with a band here in Austin, Tx. the other day that was so bad, I almost fell off my drummer's throne. The music was 60's and early 70's copy songs. BUT their love of this old music was just like Ed Wood's love for for film making. I've decided to write a screenplay about their love of music in spite of how bad they were.
Plan 9 From Outer Space may be a terrible movie, but it sure is entertaining! I'll never forget being forced to suffer through "Rashomon" three times for a film class--and the sonofabitch professor gave me a "D" on the paper for my trouble. Give 'em hell, Ed Wood---and thanks a million for the movies!
I remember the first time I saw this movie with my brother. When the movie ended, he turned to me and said "Wait, wait... this Ed Wood was real? Like, all of this really happened? 'Plan 9 from Outher Space' truly exist and THAT'S how they filmed it??? with the cardboard props and all of that???". He was trully shocked, ha, ha.
Obviously was not a genius, but Edward Wood believed in his dreams, believed in what he was doing as if it was the masterpiece of the century, so his enthusiasm was always strong. Just for that you can't dislike him. Tim Burton catches that essence, love for making movies, in his masterpiece
I just watched "Plan 9" again a couple of days ago. It beats the hell out of anything done by half of those hacks in Hollywood these days, and they've got huge budgets to work with. If you don't believe me just check out Wal-Mart's $5 bin sometime.
Tim Burton who made the film Ed Wood starring Johnny Depp as a cult filmmaker Ed Wood, and he make movies like no one else like Disney's The Black Cauldron, eh?
Being known as "the worst movie ever made" draws some interest to it and makes it a cult classic of sorts. It got me to watch it. It certainly was bad, but bad in a fun way. And seeing those home movies of Lugosi inserted in the Movie, was a treat to Dracula fans.
So because he's a good actor he should be punished? I don't think so, Johnny Depp is still Johnny Depp. He shouldn't be punished by his fans for being successful.
@Shanethefilmmaker I think there are movies that are even worse than Plan 9, such as "Manos The Hands of Fate" and "Monster A-Go-Go" , but you're right--none has officially taken the "worst movie" title from Plan 9. My take on it is that Plan 9 is at least fun to watch; Manos and Monster A Go Go don't even have that going for them!
Manos The Hands of Fate was just unwatchable. It was incredibly awful and not one-bit entertaining. Everything about it was awful. Plan 9, as bad as it was, was and still is entertaining to watch. Plan 9 was 1000x better.
Good movie but not historically correct. Ed wood made 3 other movies that wasn't mentioned in this movie. Ed wood used Bela legosi simply for his name to try to get budget for his movies. And besides glen or Glenda Ed wood always lost funding during the filming of his movies making it so he couldn't afford to print the negative prints of his movies, making it impossible for him to show them. So the two scenes at the movie theaters in this movie, it's impossible for it to happen. And he only made monster nudie films because the only kinds of studios that would pay him anymore were porn studios.
Josh this is just an FYI: don’t expect movies like this and the Disaster Artist to be 100% accurate. Tim Burton's best movie as far as I'm concerned.
This is Johnny Depp's best performance as far as I'm concerned.
I totally agree!
Without a doubt. Mind you, he's made some stinkers.
