i use my cluctch if i shift up or down, not taking a chance with my transmission
+jared sword look you 1. you hold the clutch when you start 2. put yo feet under the shift shit n pull it up 1 time 3. when you start puling yo gas let go of the clutch slowly 4. the when you hear the moto start getting louder you pull clutch let go gas shift up 1 tme n gas
+jared sword unless you mean you not going to go fast n go down gear without clutch i agree with you on that
once you get faster and more experienced on a motocross track you won't use the clutch for downshifting.
Thank you. Rode for the first time with boots and realized my new bike's clutch pedal was too low! Thanks for the experienced advice on that.
I have YZ250 2 stroke. Its fully ported, high compression ratio, fatty pipe, bored carb, well tuned, race tech suspension valving and springs...all the best stuff. Clutch shifting is just wrong, for so many reasons, including the bike balance and traction. I also spoke to 2 former Pro Supercross racers whom I ride with, and they have never heard of using the clutch for shifting. Dirt bike transmissions are built to not use the clutch - thats how they are designed. Use the clutch for traction control, but not shifting. To shift without the clutch, just "twitch" the throttle off for a micro second. This unloads the transmission and the bike will smoothly and effortlessly click into the next gear. Downshifting is done under braking thus the transmission is already unloaded. This "use the clutch for shifting rhetoric is just bad advice.
Coming from street to dirt I always used the clutch to shift. Recently stopped using it and it is much easier and faster without using it. And as a technician you are correct it will not harm the transmission at all.
When I try to downshift on my DRZ400SM without the clutch, there's a ton of force keeping me from pressing the shift lever. I could blip the throttle to get rid of that force, but that means adding throttle while trying to stop AKA it's slower. I use my brakes to stop the bike, not the engine. There's literally no advantage to downshifting without the clutch.
When I was a beginner on quads, I wouldn't use the clutch to shift. People act like clutchless shifting is an advanced technique but it's natural for newbies. In reality you have no control over the rear tire speed when you just dump gears without the clutch. Slipping the clutch on downshifts to control rear wheel speed, is the advanced technique.
@@atypical_moto perhaps for stopping or slowing down fast it best to use all 3. Pull in clutch n bang down a gear, now all at same time u slowly release clutch for engine braking AND u apply both brakes smoothly
Yeah Mate, I'm Stickin' to No Clutch Upshift with Throttle Blip! & Clutch Downshift with Rev Matching! What he's Saying is Backwards to me! Racing or on the Road, if you Downshift without the Clutch you'll be Smashing Gears & Causing a Rear Wheel Lockup! I'm Not Changing, even if he's the Expert! 👍🍺
the shifter goes up into the next gear allot easier when you clutch......you should try it..... have to put 2x the force on the shifter.....no clutch. shift slower if you want.
I really loved your clip
this video helped me allot thanks man i Learned me new stuff i didnt knew ill show my friends this video :)
Thx for the tips
Yeah I found its good to use the clutch even a little bit its insurance of solid shift I have raced and not used it,but if the clutch is brand new,and your budget unlimited,ok,its good to always use a little just be safe, your fingers should be there anyway,I learned eventually when I got serious about racing.Believe I could go out and ride without it but you'll be smoother with it and smoother useally means faster.track conditions will vary too making clutch use more important than when traction and the track is just perfect...but those days are not all the time, thanks Gary...
Thanks alot for this video
thansk for this content master
I'm about to buy my first bike, and I found this really helpful
Great video. So if down shift without clutch no damage at all ?
I saw some video of gary at 63 he said he is...an he still gets thru the middle of a turn an out of a corner faste than the majority of the planet...very impressive set up mid corner an drive out the exit wow....i know he was the 1970 supercross champion...did u win an out door title too...i go google that...
MX riders are the masters of multi tasking!
It's really opinion and preference. I always use the clutch shifting up and down. What I feel, it's good for the bike but so inefficient as your trying to go fast and so in engrained in your mind. I need to start experimenting shifting up clutch less or hydraulic clutch.
very helpful 👍👍👍
road bikes you can up shirt without a clutch. always downshift with. as you go down the gears your increasing the revs.. smooth transition in. i still cut the throttle on an upshift but with decent timing wont cause problems. same principle as a quick shifter but it does the throttle for you
Cool video
for upshifting, can you use a combination of bending your ankle up and using your leg?
I watched this videos and I went dirt biking and my shifting was a lot bette.
what is a DVD ? nice video here, thanks for the tips
i think downshifting without clutch and blip throttle can blocking your rear will and cause slide
when you're on a slippery, hard-pack surface if you downshift too early or downshift twice then yes, but otherwise it's not a problem, your weight should be over the rear when you're decelerating anyway which should help prevent the rear wheel skidding.
only downshift or upshift on a jump without clutch, never when rear is on the ground.
I can't downshift without the clutch on my DRZ. There's a ton of force holding the bike in gear. I can up shift without the clutch if I blip the throttle and neutralize the tension. I still use the clutch up or down though.
Cool Thanks!
You have Been very helpful man keep up the good vids
i have never had an issue with my transmission or anything and i never have used the clutch to shift. He is correct in what he says but idk i never have missed gears or had issues with it, i suppose its personal preference.
from my past experience. You NEED tons of clutch work to make a 2 stroke go fast. If your not banging on the clutch, your not running it right on a 2 stroke. =)
Zombie Dead Girl that's true. If your skilled enough. US mere mortals and avg peeps need that clutch Hella bad...til we improve. Definitely spot on though...once ya get good enough.
That's BS! I ride a two-stroke and you can shift faster without the clutch. I can haul ass on my 2-stroke without using the clutch. Have you ever ridden one?
For all racers out there, You always pull the clutch in when shifting down! Never let the bike its self slow down through shifting, besides the fact its bad for the engine it takes away time. When shifting up? I personal don't pull in the clutch just bc it takes away the power from the bike
i'v ride 10 years never used clutch when shifting expet now some times whit the 350 sx-f bechose it makes it some times litle bit easier when in the low gears
when i shift on my cr80 do i have to be super quick to shift or can i shift slowly because im starting out on shifting
I’ve never had a problem shifting until I bought a 2018 husqvarna te300, it’s either too high or too low I can’t get it just right, I changed my shift lever a few times and even changed my boots to a thinner toe boot but for some reason can’t get it fight
from one motovlogger to another... keep em comin
I dont use the clutch going up but ALWAYS use it going down... thinking of how much stress your put on the selector and gears themselves but crunching down the gears
Me too. I've always found that a slight blip of the throttle on upshifts to work as well as the clutch. Then flick the clutch on downshifts.
Just got some new boots and I can't feel my shifter at all. Going to have to try to break them in if that doesn't work get rid of them.
Do you guys know who this is? If he says do it you should do it, he was one of the best I think he knows what he’s talking about, and when your racing you tend to ride different then just out riding
Wish I had watched this 8 years ago haha. Just now realising my shifter was set up way too low since I bought my husky new, thought I must just be a sook and the factory surely knows better. Better late than never
Im pretty sure that im using theclutch on down shift road race habit..also dirt since the beginning...but star yamaha was working with haiden deagen an get him to practice doing clutch free motos....is that new theory...i know full throttle upshifts are no problem since my 1986 CR 250R two smoke....i just time my shifts an later just having a fresh clutch installed it shifts pinned wide open...back in the70s older guyswith not as good a trans as we have now used to hit the kill button as they shifted wide open....thats kinda like using ignition but japanese bikes dont need the clutch on upshifts just to keep the front wheel down...2 strokes i had holeshots down to leaning my head forward or my helmut back to maintain the front wheel at 4 inches off the ground i found the right place to sit an used only my head to break the back tireloose if the front came up....four strokes have 2 much traction i see them clamping the front down too far the rear suspension not loading at all its just a pretty rooster tail...
I think thats true i may not pull it in all the way but i do pretend like im using the clutch u need to be on its in case...u needed it
Ive never used the clutch to downshift on my banshee tbh and I ride it pretty hard I only use it to upshift
Fresh!
I have the exact same fox red racing shirt
Shifting with a 4 gear electric moto is similar. EBeast and Efox is a electic dirt bike with 4 gears and a manual clutch
I prefer upshift with the clutch so you can get an extra little pop of speed
I keep the throttle wide open when up shifting and just flick clutch. is this cool like
#newrider question, sorry in advance.. On the upshift, is it clutch and shifter at the same time, then throttle ? or is it clutch, wait a beat, shift, wait a beat, then throttle ?!
You probably figured it out now but if not. You have to pull in your clutch shift up (clutch in) then while letting the clutch out slowly work the throttle the more you do you it you will get it.
Pardon my English I'm from Sweden.... ;-) in Sweden we in have a word called cross växling . I use clutch going down in gear , and just release throttle going up . .. but that's just me ;-)
that's fine when you are not racing-like on the gas... not the full 40-50 hp on the transmision
It depends what situation im in because pulling in the clutch actually makes a huge difference to speed so if you are riding next to someone else and u need to go fast dont use the clutch, motocross bikes are for speed therefore using no clutch makes no difference
I’m a new rider, just got mx style boots for my drz400 and have a really tough time shifting up into 3rd. If I dig my boot in deep enough to make sure I hit third every time, my boot gets wedged in between the peg and shifter. Any tips? Thanks
You can move your shift lever up by rotating it one notch on the shaft. Just make sure it doesn't run into the chain at the front sprocket when you do upshift. It won't be long and you'll want to move it back down. And practice practice practice.
my biggest issue is keeping a finger on the clutch it is very hard to break that habbit. the other thing is when I try and keep a finger on the lever always contact my other fingers when I pull it in and can't stand that
Can someone explain me how downshifting without clutch works? I'm riding Honda CB600 Hornet (I don't have any experience with dirt bikes but I'm planning to change it in the future) and i can't even imagine to downshift like that. Please I'm curious ;)
i only use the clutch when i need to i dont sue it when i shift usualy but im always slipping it im on a 85
I always use the clutch
What's the power band and what is shifting for power?!
You put gear on to stand in the garage ??
The dirt bike Channel says not to use the clutch. It's a constant mesh transmission. Shifting without the clutch will not hurt it at all. Downshifting without the clutch might be a little hard on them. I only use the clutch to start off and to downshift. I almost always rev-match when I downshift.
How practical are the MX boots for touring on highways with 10-15% riding on trails/off -roading? I ride a Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 and thinking on purchasing Gaerne Fastback boots than a adv/touring boot like a Dakar or Sidi Adv 2. Your thoughts?
I watch Mx tips all the time and I can't seem to find any videos that aren't this guy
God bless u
Learn control of your riding means knowing how to use your clutch, with brand new clutch plates yes u can shift with out using clutch but that's more if an advance technique working your way up to the pro level control means u can stop the bike as fast as u make it go and that means mastering the use of the clutch,I can tell u this the top pros are on their clutches, especially on a supercross tracks out doors u could probably get away with out it,loose soil, hard pack ....or wet muddy condition, don't use the clutch hope u enjoy laying on the ground..
FIRST OFF!! Experienced upshifting can be done clutchless. Downshifting can be done clutchless too (as long as the rpm matches the speed.. If either shifting preference if not done the right way YES!! you can mess something up.. I only use the clutch when taking off from a complete stop or making a complete stop without going to neutral.. Experience dictates how or when you use it & since everyone & their mom rides diffent you'll get all kinds of answers as to when, how or IF you use it.
Of course it can be done, but there’s minimal if any time/speed benefit, and while clutchless shifting doesn’t immediately trash a transmission it does cause more wear than shifting with a clutch. I’ve only ever used clutchless shifting when I’ve had a mechanical breakdown
I love stuff like this.
I recently started getting back into riding. I just missed it so much.
One of the things i noticed is there are just certain scenarios i upshift with out the clutch but i always make sure i let off the throttle entirely. But for the most part i used the clutch.
Do you have any videos of arm pump ?
@@FirstGendodgegarage yeah lol when you're riding for awhile especially over woops and you start feeling you forearms get weak/puffed up. its just called arm pump cuz it feels like you forearms are pumped up and stiff and you loose a bit of strength in your fingers as a result.
@@CarsnStuff I know what it is I’m laughing at your comment asking for them , eat your veggies and do some chin-ups you’ll be alright pal , your arms are just tired and need strength
totally disagree about using clutch for upshift. A very slight release "twitch" of the throttle unloads gearbox and enables a smooth effortless upshift & its a quicker shift then pulling and releasing clutch lever. It also gives more consistant power to rear wheel thus keeping bike balanced. Clutch should be used as a traction control device on corner exit and off starts.
@@emmapringle1945 I find it faster to not let off the gas and just use clutch.
I do the Opposite! No Clutch Throttle Blip Upshift, Clutch Down Shift With Rev Matching Blip, It Seemed to Work, I Raced 2 Strokes Mainly! If you Downshift on a Road bike without Clutch it can Cause Compression Lockup & Skid the Rear! Or in the Wet you'll Probably Crash! I'll Stick to what works for me! But he's the Expert, Don't listen to me! 👍🍺
same I use my clutch no matter what.
Wife: oh you’ve got your gear on have a nice ride
Dipshit: I’m going to stand in the garage
Hi is there anyone that can show or tell me HOW do I adjust my gear shifter to be a bit lower because it's to high I wear a size us10 and the owner before me had size us12 so I need to adjust it BUT HOW PLEASE HELP!!!!
Idiots. Idiots everywhere learn how the sequential gearbox works and how to torque is transmitted through the gearbox and come tell me that i can't shift without clutch. Sequential gearbox was created in the 19th century and is still being used, designed to be used without clutch.
I have rebuilt many gearboxes and i can safely say that shifting without clutch is not gonna wear it off.
Yeah, but neglecting to use the clutch on downshifts is going to lose you lap time. Clutchless shifting issues in mx arent about wear, theyre about what conveys power to the dirt best
How do you know ay what time to shift
Gday..Mate i got a 2007 kxf 250..went on a 4 hr enduro ..im sorry to say your wrong ..my standing up position with booots on pegs needs shifter bout 50 mm (2 imch) higher than foot peg ..with shifter level with peg i did nothing but hit down shift when landing after jump and changing up gears with side sole of boot hiting shifter....riding in the aussie outback bush ..not a graded motocross track....you wont have a foot for long poking your toe down that low ..hence the modified shifter...
.just saying ..this was discussed with ALOT of riders ..and they all had their shifter above foot peg level..some custom modifyimg ( which im planning to do ..) others bought after market longer shifters ..my boots are oneals ..very thick on toe ..bout 60 mm soul to top ..much thicker than your alpine 8's..just saying ..cheers
I have alpinestars and the two box is almost the same as your o'neals such a drag
I think you are riding flat-footed (hence the accidental shifting down after jumps) and that's your problem. Try riding at the balls of your feet, predict which gear you are going to be in for the next stretch and try to slip the clutch when you are slightly off the optimum gearing. Go over to Ryan Hughes channel for proper tips on MX riding.
When should you shift up as in with the RPMs should they get close to reaching over RPM or during when it's going over the RPMs or what
When you feel like you should just shift better to be higher in gear then lower
Clutches are so light nowadays that there’s really no reason not to always clutch shift...as someone who grew up riding big 70s Laverda triples and Ducati desmos with non-hydraulic clutch mechanisms I cannot understand why people don’t always use the lever. My DRZ400E clutch is a feather weight compared to old superbike clutches.
Because not using the clutch is faster on the track. And it doesn't hurt the bike at all.
When changing up gears snap the throttle off each time and when changing down blip the throttle.
This guy has forgotten more than most of us will ever know so what he says try it can’t be wrong
I just Stay in 4 gear or if i need to accelerate I go down then go up again
What’s up with the engine and swing arm when he moves his foot, it like warps. 0:40
I have a size 14 or 15 shoe and i find it extremely hard to shift. Is it possible that i may need a longer shift lever if possible because even my friends bikes are easier to shift with longer levers
I have size 15 boots and all you got to do is ride at the balls of your feet and adjust the gear lever a bit over the height of the peg to be able to slide the boot underneath it. I ride a 500 EXC for dirt riding.
I use it if I have time for it lol sometimes you just have to shift
His help me on my dirt bike
We all went to school but we all do what's tested and proven and make us happy lol
I bought brand new o neal boots n it has steel toe but i cant shift up just down and i have tried breaking them in can anyone help
Outside of more seat time, possibly look at moving your shift lever up one spline. This will give you a tad more room to get your toe under it.
Has anyone here consulted the manufacturer on clutch use and whether using it or not using it causes damage ?
to avoid any problems.. USE CLUTCH every shift wheter its up or down.
that way you wont stall or miss any gear... thats all i thank you
Do you pull the clutch in all the way or just slightly?
Charlie Lano test when it ingages and disengages then that's how far you gotta pull it in
I would never downshift without using my clutch. You can upshift without the clutch tho... This guy had it backwards imo
+XxKtm49xX sorry i'm new to dirt biking and not using the clutch when shifting up wouldn't it cause you to wheelie? or does only the clutch cause that to happen or how much gas you give it?
+oHerroPrease Exactly, you have to use clutch when downshifting otherwise you force it in, upshift doesnt need clutch, some bikes like my ktm 525 dont want clutch with upshifts at all.
tell me if im right, to put in first gear you hold the clutch an down shift once. then to change gear you up shift holding clutch. correct or incorrect?
+Charlotte Jewell Correct, you have to make sure you go far enough upwards that you go back through Neutral into 2nd
Make sure when you downshift that you slow down because it locks the back wheel some times
0:18 More difficult
I've been riding for 5 years and have always used the clutch while shifting down??????? Can someone explain to me a bit further why you don't need the clutch while down shifting? I ride a 125 2 stroke if that even matters.
i use it to i guess you should because of the ratio of the gears change when downshift and acts a a natural brake and puts alot of stress on the tranny
I have a 4-stroke 125, I have been riding since I was 10, I'm currently 15, I always use the clutch otherwise you can end up blowing the transmission/gear box,
Sure sure.. IN the old days, i had a 91' CR250. I don't used the clutch for shift. Never blowed up. Never! Never had a problem.. This thing is depend on manufacturing quality. For example Honda make better quality than other manuf. in the 90's. My friend had Suzuki, TM, Yamaha, etc.. but none was so good like Honda's.. I believe today the other companies make better quality. At least i hope..

You use the gears like a car to slow down don't slam it on 2 from 4th but has you use breaks you use your transmission..and I only use going up down don't reason ..
What up all 👍😀
U can up shift and down shift without clutch....u have to feel it when u ride...clutch for stopping and start.
This made me laugh 😂 thanks
1000 th like
I'm only six feet tall but I have giant feet. Size 13 ! I'm gonna adjust my shift lever up a bit. Thanks for the post.
+Johnny Vegas I will also be adjusting my shift lever after seeing this, now that Ir makes sense why it was so hard to get my foot under it haha
+Burnin Green Found out hammer Head makes a 20 mm shift lever for big feet. I'm gonna try it cause my foot has got stuck between the shifter and the peg many times and some day it could make me wipe out.
1:42 its the daft fucking boots that make it difficult cant stand them off road boots its like riding with your feet in plaster casts
Thanks for the video, very informative.

When Gary talks recommends using the clutch while upshifting is he just offering this recommendation to four stroke riders or is this something he's recommending across the board for both two stroke and four stroke racers?
I would have to think he is backwards on his shifting idea... clutchless upshifts are perfectly fine on these bikes because of the kind of transmission they have but you can get damage from clutchless downshifting...
It's across the board for both 2 and 4 strokes, especially 2 strokes. It takes more clutch, throttle and braking finesse to go fast on a 2 stroke.
Tj1056 Thats what I was thinking because way back when I was on a 65, clutchless downshifts (now that i think about it) felt horrible because the bike was slowing down by just stomping the shifter and not smoothly feathering the clutch.
I have watched videos of Gary Semics ever since I was a kid in the 50cc class! Thanks for the great content and helping me become a much better rider my entire life!
