  • Trevor's barnfind 72 Chevelle is coming along. We have successfully revived the car and gotten it back on the road. We have been focusing on not only getting it running but also attempting to sort through the mechanical systems to ensure proper operation and reliability.
Although the Chevelle does run, it's not running very well. The car is starting to develop a misfire. Trevor and I have a goal of attending several local car shows with the Chevelle this year, so this is something that we need to address. So it was time to give the barn find Chevelle a tune up.
Now the timing of this was perfect. I have been looking to buy an old Sun distributor machine for years, something not easy to come by in current times. Days before we did the planned tuneup on Trevors Chevelle, I was able to finally pick up a very nice Sun 506 distributor tester.
Trevor and I spent the day going through the ignition system on his Chevelle. We confirmed our TDC marks on the balancer, gave the car new plugs, wires, and rotor, and of course, we spent some time playing around with the distributor on my new machine.
The time and effort was worth it. The difference in how the car ran was dramatic, surprising Trevor as he fired it up after the repairs.
So follow along with us as we take yet another step in getting the Chevelle back on the road, and not stuck on the side of it!

    About AutoTechNick:
Growing up in rural Oregon, I was always around Hot Rods & Race Cars. I imagine my early exposure to this culture ignited a spark of interest in cars, which remains my passion.
🎓 I am a proud Alumni of Wyoming Technical Institute @WyoTechAutoMechanicSchool where I studied Automotive Technology, Performance Engine Building & Street Rod Fabrication. In addition to "WyoTech," I graduated from the BMW Service Technician Education Program, more commonly known as BMW S.T.E.P.
🏎️ I spent nearly ten years working in various BMW dealerships as a Master Technician. After a move back home to the PNW, I found myself no longer servicing German-made machines but now working with Italians. I spent nearly another ten years as a Ferrari Master Technician & Shop Foreman at a local Ferrari dealership.
🏆 Ferrari selected me as one of 12 technicians worldwide to compete in the "Ferrari Testa Rossa Awards" for four years consecutively. Finishing in 3rd place in 2016, & in 2019 I was able to place in 1st, winning the competition & earning the title of the "Top Ferrari Technician in the World!"
🚀 As my time with Ferrari came to an end, a new career path awaited me…. Aerospace. I am currently working at Blue Origin, helping to build & develop the BE-3PM and BE-3U rocket engines.
With my new career path, I needed an outlet for my automotive passion, thus the reason for this channel…

How many of you have had the opportunity to use one of these old distributor machines? Better yet, do any of you still own one?

New subscriber! Nothing wrong with points! I had bought a 72 Chevelle 4 dr ht that was in a garage since 2004. I went thru the cab and all new points and tune up. I have a distributor machine too. My vacuum pump don't work so I use a hand vac pump. I grew up working with points and got lots of miles out of them. I'm working on a 70 Chevelle now that's all stock. I have a few dwell meters in my tool box too. A vac gage is another tool I keep around as a tuning tool. Great chevelle you have there. Good luck!

first off, i am proud you are "teaching" the basics of repairing of the cars, second i am curious, is trevor "extremely too young" to actually drive? third. is he homeschooled? did he drop out of his acutal school and does he do this part time after school for education wise only? no hands on, as you have to watch out for his well being? be careful of the cops doing this illegally.

Yes, Trevor has many more years ahead of him before he is able to drive! He looks a lot older than he actually is.
