    MORTSKE MONDAY!!!
I used to rebuild starters, alternators, etc.
Drop the starter down into the jaws of a decent size bench vice and clamp it down under the jaw (not so hard you crush anything). This will keep it from jumping out since it's clamped around the main housing/body.
Use a piece of hardwood (a hammer handle works in a pinch) to push in on the starter drive gear to test its strength/power/torque.
BTW, that's the correct term for it. Bendix is a brand of starter drive gear......the more you know...😊
You can also get spray-on insulation for the windings.
Disappointed that Mojo didn't use his growler on the armature.😢

Another great episode in the "Mortske and Mojo Show"! My '59 Chevy Bel Air had the 235 CI "Blue Flame" six in it, and one day the battery would just barely turn the engine over. Frustrated, I grabbed the fan and pushed it down, and the damn thing roared to life-- very nearly taking off some of my digits! I learned a valuable lesson at 17 years old...

It'll sell. Be well.

My guess for the bed wood would be Valspar. My old boss swore by that for the wood trim on his boat and if it stood up to that, the bed floor should be a walk in the park for it. Either that or Thompson's Water Seal, commonly used on decks.

  • @Stovebolt2024
    @Stovebolt2024 3 місяці тому

Absolutely love your will-it-starts, Duff, and Mojo! The 1951 3100 usually came stock with a 216 6-volt system. The flywheels have different counts of teeth between the 12 volt 235 and 6 volt 216. Equally important, the pitch of the drive gear teeth is different and will not mate precisely causing excessive friction. Maybe something got swapped over the years? I have always kept the starter and flywheel as a matched set. Some people refer to these as 6-volt flywheels and 12-volt flywheels. Additionally, the foot start lever system has to be synchronized so the drive gear is engaged just before the electrical contact is make. This can go awry with worn linkage, the special shoulder bolt pivot being worn, or the contact arm being worn. The removable electrical contact can also get worn and pitted, but the contact pad inside can be turned to a fresh side or sanded smoother and a little dielectric grease applied. Hope this helps!

Dude its the best car ever made!!!. I had 77 and was getting the rust in the roofline as well. What you have to do is make it a convertible!!!. or make it with a convertible roof the kind that has the straps across the top like a bed frame, curved to shape weld them in to a roll cage lol. You will see that the rust area was never shot with primer. I wish those bodies were galvanized dipped. My old one was 77- 403 performer rpm' with some 280 .449 lift cam and buick cop gears :239 or so. And I took a headlight driverside bright out and made ram air blower intake when the guy shortened the snorkel on the air cleaner assembly. It fitted a dryer vent hose over it perfectly. Used the ram under bumper scoop, if its still there for you, and routed the hose over the alternator, cut the hose where alternator fan blades spin and bow the hose to crush onto above the alternator. Weirdly it did work. Carburetor lift plate made it run better after custom cam. Technically the intake looked like a Akoubir intake on a Spitfire. I was going to paint it up in ol Desert Spitfire Camo but alas..... Had that color car in 79 version with 350 too pinstriped. Posi-traction was the best!!

I ran a 6v starter on 12v for 8 years. Does fine as long as you don't crank forever. Only reason I'm not still using it is because I swapped to a 250. Look under the trans crossmember, there should be a hole on each side to access those cover bolts.

And the award for the smokiest exhaust cam goes to....The Delaney Brothers! Not sure it would help with this one, but I learned to drive on a 69 Rambler (3 on the tree) with unsynchronized R and 1. The trick was to hit the clutch, then run it through 2 and 3 to get the synchronizer dogs spinning, and it would then drop into R or 1 without a fuss. Good to see that you and the crew could get this one out on the road.

I seem to remember B&S used a YC12 chsmpion spark plug or something like in the old flat head lawn mowers engines.
But I could be mistaken, because that'd be about the time I was driving for the first time in my ole man's 3100 5 window 262 straight 6 with 3 on the tree.
But you learned real quick that you didn't try to do any fancy shifting between 1st to 2nd, because it would lock up like it was in both gears at once, and it took two flat head screwdrivers to get the linkage separated where it had locked the linkage together.
It only took anything flat enough to go into the key switch to turn it on, and simply step on the gas pedal with your heel, while pushing your big toe on the starter button next to it.
I'd tell you bout the time I borrowed it one school day to go to the lake with young lady friend.
Drove around on the shore line, and couple places the mud got little thick.
Being on the ole bias ply 5.0x16 it was hold it to the floor and hope we made it through the muck.
We stopped at car wash and cleaned it up inside and out, but I forgot bout those big ass fenders.
Three days later guess what fell out in huge clumps on all four corners.
Ole man thought it was funny as you know what, but Ma wasn't so happy.
Let's just say I only went to school and ball my own games for month.
With the addition of my little sister being 10 years younger and just a baby, you can guess who was the babysitter after school on days didn't have a game.
Plus the parents started going dancing every Friday and some Saturday nights with you got it free baby sitter

I just finished watching " The Ghost in the invisible Bikini" on YT. The scary "Puddin" special effects was about on par. But it is one of those coincidences that I find charming.

MOJO is a treat and a treasure. That last starter sounded like the field windings are swelling when they get hot . Did I see a Porsche back there ? Good stuff as always .

This channel has become my #1 that I look forward to watching. Great laughs on this one 😂 hey, if you go to the video when the truck is parked at the side of the road and you’re in front of it with the blue skies and fields behind you with Duff in the car, epic shot. You should frame it. 😁👍🏻👋🏻

Hey dude all you have to do is burn the wood before you put it on and you'll seal it and then it'll work dark. And you can use it all the time and it's waterproof

Crazy how prices have gone up! I bought a 49 Chevrolet for $200, and a 53 GMC for $250, and drove them both home.

Hmmm, running twelve volts throuh a 6v starter and then cranking it for minutes at a time to refire an engine that hasn't run in decades? I wonder what the pattern could be with yall our smoked starters ;-) Love what you do Mortske, keep em coming!

Good morning from Cape Cod ⛵ Curse of the starter Monday 😠 I know you've had problems with starters in the past but this was ridiculous 😭 a Chineseum carburetor to the rescue. All at all seems to be a pretty decent truck, runs and drives and who needs brakes 😉 thanks for an awesome video ✌️🇺🇲

Late to the party, as usual... The motor is a pre-1959. They moved the oil filler cap to the middle of the valve cover in '59 to accommodate the lower profile hood. Still a good engine for durability and low end torque. The trans is technically a 3 speed with a "granny gear". First gear was used for way heavy loads and stump pulling and such. For normal driving you pull out in "2nd". Very satisfying vid. Pretty decent project for a guy who can weld.
