One of my favourite halo books!

I think its important to not give every character the death they deserve. Its a cold cruel reminder of the reality of war and the human condition which the writers of halo have done amazingly

Since he's arguably the most connected to the player (I said arguably, as Noble 6 might be even more connected, depending on how you view him), it's only fair that we get to play as him, and THEN die as him, not give him a cheap death on a book many might not read

If being a life long fan of Elder Scrolls and World of Darkness has taught me anything. It's that lore is what you want it to be. Rookie is alive and still the biggest badass in the ODSTs.
Wouldve been awesome to see The Rookie as a spartan 4. We got to see and play as a spartan 2, spartan, 3, and yes spartan 4 but a more personable character like Noble Six and Master Chief wouldve been The Rookie. The Silent Trio from 2 to 4.
Yeah, that was bull. It felt weird to have a player character so callously killed off. Rookie's apparent ability to track and be able to basically be a Futuristic Noir Protagonist made me think he should have been tracking Master Chief.
So I just noticed something, sort of as a way, for us to not completely hate a single person for his death, I just realized the writing basically made it so we could blame multiple people for his death. For starters, Buck, being the one who gave the order to flank that resulted in his capture in the first place. Then Mickey, who quite literally stated in the novel, jumped the insurrectionist, causing her to panic so she shot Rookie. Then of course Dutch who we know joined the Insurrectionists in the first place. Romeo I’m not sure, so I’ll just simply say we already didn’t really like him because he was an asshole in the first place.
Unless it happens on screen, it doesn’t happen for me. Same thing with Noble Six. The shot cuts before that sword comes done. Very easily could’ve been blocked.

ODST had great characters and good writing for those characters and I wish bungie had actually done more with this type of game. They had something special with ODST and they just opted not to further explore it and I can’t really fathom why. I think seeing the halo universe from the perspective of a regular human is far more intriguing than seeing it through Chief’s perspective who’s always at the epicenter of all the major events that happen throughout the franchise. Missed opportunity for sure to do more with all of these characters besides buck who I think was a pretty obvious choice to eventually make him a spartan within the canon. And even if they wanted to do a game centered around these events that would be awesome you could do a reach style ODST game with boots on the ground where Buck is presumably the only person to make it out of the mission alive considering he’s the only person we catch up with again later in the games.
That’s so weird, there’s a Mandela affect or something because I swear Mickey betrayed the UNSC and he’s the one that shot Rookie and killed him and Buck tried to stop it and they were both disarmed and buck through his helmet at Mickey I think after Rook was shot but Buck succeeded to take him down.

Rarely ever did an ODST see a happy ending compared to your average marine. The Rookie doesn't need plot armor before he's killed. He did several things that were impactful, so therefore he wasn't "fridged," or killed off without having done something impactful. So, why does his death work? Well, it forces Buck to be a better leader and play his cards better in the future. It teaches Romeo how to be a better friend and person overall. It makes Mickey so consumed with guilt and anger he defects to the Insurrection before being redeemed by being reminded of what things were like and how much he needed to care. It reminded Dutch that people are only around for a short time, which was something he was used to, he just hadn't seen it since Reach. And it reminded Dare to be a better leader when she took over as well. So hos death wasn't pointless, in fact, it was kinda necessary to move Buck and the others along as characters. But if y'all wanna be pissed off about a death, look up Spartan Team Black.
The most important thing is that the Rookie didn't have any incomplete arc or story reason he should have survived to do X. He was a blank slate character who went on an adventure, got out, and continued service for the rest of his days.
Doesn't matter, there is not a single justification that you could ever make to justify killing a primary character off-screen. No one reads the books, so finding out he died in a fucking book is going to piss off a lot of people as it feels like being punched in the dick for getting attached to the character.

Then the ship crash lands on a planet by the banished and the insurrectionists and the rookie has to find other survivors and fight to find a way off the planet with a boss being a banished spartan who nearly slays the rookie before being saved by an odst drop pod door barreling towards the spartan followed by the rookie being saved by Buck.
They should make a sequel of after odst and a prequel of before halo 5 where u play as buck during that whole battle with the insurrectionists and watch all your odst members die in front of your face, it’d honestly bring a nice solid sad toned halo game to the franchise knowing that the halos after halo 5 were just all sunshine and rainbows and everyone wins
