It was one of the best highs I've ever lived in my life. Video games were about us back then, the community, it was all in one package, profits were made by sales only and when DLC dropped it was usually another whole package deal. I miss it, but truly blesse to have lived it.
Something about that opening scene, when he looks at him as he gives the order to fire for their salute. It just hits in a weird way. Such a great trailer.
You might be sensing a glimpse of what it's like to feel the call of your ancestors, and to embrace the warrior tradition of your people. In our disenchanted age we only see faint echoes of it in odd places, like video game trailers. Just a century ago or less, though, the spirits of those who came before were always close.

Halo 3 and Gears of War 3 were suppose to be the endings of their franchises. There was a huge hype behind concluding the stories of the two big Xbox exclusives. Then Microsoft had to dig them up after they were laid to rest just to continue printing money. We could have had entire side stories like ODST, Halo Wars, GoW: Judgement, Gears Tactics, etc. Some boardroom at Microsoft thought it was good to linearly keep the franchise going though. Now look what we have; Halo has been a entire mess, all over the place, and Gears is just a weird rehash where you have to read comics to get even the slightest amount of coherency. Xbox gaming went off the rails (in a bad way) around 2012. It'll be next to impossible to put it back on track without wiping the slate of the last 10 years of mud. Halo is trying to do that right now, Infinite is clawing to get back at the level H3 was; bringing back a better artstyle of similar Bungie era designs and a vaguely similar story to CE's. I just don't think it'll ever be the same because the magic is gone and they have been given a million chances before as they fail and fail again. We'll always have those nostalgic titles though. Preserved in a time where a video game was a relatively complete experience and franchises where not out for your wallets nor chasing trends.

Completely disagree, all early halo live action trailers were phenomenal. The only "lightning in a bottle" was Old Bungie and all the talented people at microsoft that helped them.
Halo Landfall for Halo 3, this ODST trailer, and the Reach prequel live action trailer. They captured lightning three times. It wasn't a timed period, it was the marketing team and devs they had at the time. They were in the zone and putting out insane content that modern franchises dream of accomplishing. All the talent is gone and gaming isn't the same market anymore.
@@OldManJenkins23 Forward Unto Dawn had me on the edge of my seat. I love how Tarkov keeps a tattered flag on him so that every ODST he has to bury will get a flag at their funeral. The rifle salute comes from the enemy this time.
People complained that it was overpriced, but it wasn't if you look into it. Originally it was planned as a Halo 3 campaign DLC but it kept getting bigger and bigger until Microsoft said it needed to be a standalone title. So Bungie said okay, but as long as we pad the price out by bundling all the Halo 3 multiplayer DLC on a second disc for the customer. They really sold a side game for $80CAD back then but it was broken down into $40 for the game with a mandatory $40 purchase of the Halo 3 multiplayer tied in. ODST's campaign and firefight is 100% worth $40 and the multiplayer disc worked as a copy of Halo 3 without the campaign. It was a true 2 for 1 combo and people were too blinded by "but I already bought the Halo 3 DLC" mindset to appreciate what happened. ODST is an underrated gem of the franchise and newer fans need to put respect on it's name like they do with Reach.
@@stickeyyyy It came with Halo 3 multiplayer, with every expansion. Like my original comment says, it was half a new game and half DLC and multiplayer (with matchmaking) for the top game of the era.

Prior Army vet. I've been assigned funeral detail. This is spot on. It's wild because the military for the most part is nothing but jokes and ball busting but funeral detail and training for funeral detail is very serious and somber. Usually you practice in front of your command sergeant major for approval (at least we had to). The flag folding is very serious and there is always 3 casing stuffed into the flag to symbolize the seven guns firing their three volley salute. (21 guns) You keep a straight face and stay professional. Which is easy due to majority of military funerals are those of older men who died of old age who had prior military service. But a buddy of mine was on one detail of a fallen soldier who passed away from a car accident. Before they lowered the casket, the son put his toy car on his father's coffin. My buddy, standing stone faced, said he couldn't hold that one in and just had tears streaming down his face during the flag folding.
It's strange. Throughout the years I come back to this video from time to time. People we've played with, some now have moved on to other aspects of life, or we don't have as much time to be gaming as we used to. Some have passed on, and some have grown in separate directions. However, I still remember dropping in the pods and fighting the covenant with my friends. The years may go by, but it was a pleasure to "feet first into hell" soldiers.
I came here from the PlayStation world… we need you… we desperately need you… we are losing the fight for Super Earth… we Helldivers NEED our ODST sisters and brothers… not for the numbers alone… but for the inspiration… we are fighting hard to have you on our side some day, and I pray that day comes sooner than later

Man I remember being like 3 years fresh out of high school, went to a bar in Flagstaff, Az with a couple of my gamer friends (Brent and Rob) and we're sitting at the front bar where the big screens are and theres people playing pool, people watching Baseball, doing their own thing, etc, etc but then this started playing on the one of the flatscreens and the whole bar, WHOLE BAR dropped dead silent, all to watch this trailer. It was one of the best highs I've ever lived in my life. Video games were about us back then, the community, it was all in one package, profits were made by sales only and when DLC dropped it was usually another whole package deal. I miss it, but truly blesse to have lived it.
History repeats itself, hopefully we can live for that day.
Something about that opening scene, when he looks at him as he gives the order to fire for their salute. It just hits in a weird way. Such a great trailer.
He has been to many funerals. He's seen many young men enlist and perish. He knew the boy would soon fall into the gears of the war machine.
You might be sensing a glimpse of what it's like to feel the call of your ancestors, and to embrace the warrior tradition of your people. In our disenchanted age we only see faint echoes of it in odd places, like video game trailers. Just a century ago or less, though, the spirits of those who came before were always close.
@@JakeBowenTVsoon enough, they will be closer.
Because he knows out of all the people at that funeral there is only one person whos life can take a completely different path simply because of that death. The mother and father and sister can all just go home and live out the rest of their lives in the same way. But what will the brother do? I feel like thats why he looks at him. Almost sizing him up and wondering what path he will choose.
@@TexasGreed Powerful thought; I think you're right. At the same time though, I always thought there was a hint of sadness there too. Sadness that in a losing war, it was likely that boy would end up with the same fate.

"O.D.S.T." You are still remembered.
I miss this era of gaming. Back when it was exciting, waiting for a particular game to release. With today's releases, now I just hold my breathe and hope the game is mostly complete and the monetization isn't too egregious.
its because everything is digital now so midnight release hype and shit is gone. Nobody goes out to gamestop to look at the cool interactive advertisements either so gaming stopped being physical and purely digital.
there are still some gems like elden ring but i get it. Everything feels unfinished and scammy i wish we could just get more games with the same spirit of the old halo games
i second this whole heartedly.
What you miss is the days when gaming had a culture behind it. The slaughtering of studios by EA and Microsoft saw to it that all our old cultural icons were desecrated, so now you can barely look at them without feeling lost and sad. God I fucking hate the way things have gone

@@budaonthetoast Seems he also worked on the Halo 3: Believe ads, this guy carried old Halo ads
This and Gears of Wars “Mad World” trailer were prime Xbox. Two of the greatest trailers ever made.
Fun fact, you can dub Halo 3's believe trailer with Mad World to make it slap even harder

Remember Rookie.
I occasionally come back to rewatch this.
Bitterness from the halo show still lingers in my heart.
14 years later and this video still gives me the chills
CHIMO! This helped me become the soldier mentally I wanted to be when I became adult.. wonders now that I'm 32 and served it did help mold me this game series, not the story or SciFi but the idea of soldiers. Remember I was a teenager and knew nothing about life then. But I realised they weren't wrong on the ideas of soldiering.
The soldier shouting in Hungarian (I think) goes off hard man
I just made the connection that the reason they speak Hungarian is because they're on Reach, populated primarily by Hungarians. It wouldn't surprise me if almost all ODST training was conducted on Reach.
you are right they speak hungarian. Their name is russian but in Reach there were many hungarians, and places like Aszód, Sopron, mentioned in reach are real hungarian cities.
Fun Fact, the drill sergeants in the video were actual Hungarian Special Forces soldiers.
13 years later and i can still feel the G's as we see the trooper drop into combat. Say what you will about the past, present, or future of halo but this was an artistic peice of marketing to say the least. I hope whoever produced this got recognition
Hell divers gave us what halo never did 😭😭
Is that why this trailer has been on my mind! Talk about staying power.
I'm getting reach vibe on malevolent creek and draupnir. The way our mission is to defend and evacuate civilians while facing the overwhelming forces of automatons. And each day you see the liberate % dropping to red.

but yeah helldivers definitely has a ODST vibe. Funny the main character is called Tarkov. wonder if that is what inspired the game of the same name
2:12 I always liked to believe this was the Rookie before he transferred to Alpha-9. Maybe he had to change squads after Tarkov and the others died in a failed operation.
We need an odst game that shows the true hell they jumped into
Halo 3: ODST, that’s what this is a trailer for.
@Nick The OG was great for its time. With today's graphics we could get a very dark and gritty ODST game. Something that feels more personal ect. They could even adjust gameplay to make it feel more legit.
Tried playing ODST the other day
Fun and memorable but too slow paced to the modern times
A reboot with improved handling and added ability to run would greatly improve it

Odst doesn't get enough credit, easily one of my favorite halo games.
@@SkyNinja759 It was overpriced though. No matchmaking. $80 when every other AAA game was going for $60 at the time.

(21 guns)
You keep a straight face and stay professional.
Wow. Very interesting and by the end, moving.
