Some notes: - I am aware of some issues with the video (color grading, eye contact, etc.). Please bear with me as I work through the kinks with this new format. - Pictures of any people from the event in the video are not of the actual people in question. Many pictures used during the telling of the story were stock images, as there are no pictures of the actual people in question. They were meant to visualize the story. It seems like some of these images may have been AI, which was not my intent. I will do further research into the origin of these pictures going forward. - Not sure when the next upload will be but I appreciate your patience and kindness 💘
This is what I love to see when talking about dark subjects such as this. You took so much time and care into making sure that the victim, that Isaac Mercer, was respected and remembered. Your kindness is overwhelming.
I was originally drawn to comment about the eerie opening "..and they will stay here until THEY'RE ready to go..." and how this whole concept would be such a strong idea for a horror flick. But then this video became something more. The story telling was captivating and the lessons much more meaningful then I ever could have guessed. My favorite video of a channel that continues to produce time and again. Outstanding work. I hope this style reemerges down the road.
Wow, you really nailed the documentary format! And while the stone and the people might be gone, this video will go on, and keep the story alive. I also noticed the British flag, and I wondered if newfoundland is closer to Britain than the rest of Canada?
i really liked your narration! a lot of channels similar to yours plagarize their videos or just play long portions of other's videos/audios instead of being transformative; i particularly enjoyed how well you cited your sources and made your own fantastic investigative conclusions through the help of others :)
This was the first video of yours to come up in my recommended. Definitely earned my sub! Completely unrelated, but I thought it was cool that we have the same desk chair :D
I grew up in Labrador. We had mummers come once when I was 11. Scared the shit out of me. They were all female mummers. Mummering is very aggressive. The way they barge into your house. Demand booze, and demand dancing. One number grabbed me when I tried to leave and forced me into a dance. I couldn't wait to escape to the basement lol.
I did my own lookings into this case a while back and while I cannot find a burial record or a cemetery listing with Mercer's name in it, I did find a marriage registery with Mercer's name in it, it was listed for the district of Bay Roberts and it notes that a Isaac Mercer and a Elizabeth Brown were newlywed on the 13th of December, 1860. I have a suspicion this is probably him as several articles mention he was newlywed.
Yes, you're right. It probably isn't. It's the only Isaac Mercer I could find that died in 1860 with any kind of record, so I thought that maybe the "Find A Grave" record could have just been wrong about the age. In all honesty, we'll probably never know.
Stock images were sourced from pixabay.com. Some were just from google image searches. Wasn't aware that they were AI. There are no images of the subjects that the video is about so the images were meant to visualize the story. I'm sorry if you feel that they take away from the video. Thank you for voicing your concern.
@@unslashcultured it’s okay, thank you for answering. ai is so prevalent on today’s internet it’s becoming normal to fall for it, i just think visual content should be taken with as much importance as written sources. but again, thank you for understanding!

I didn’t notice any of the issues in the first paragraph. Great video.
Thanks, appreciate the feedback

Thanks for your supportive words 💘
It's insane how often I am told that "Canada has no culture" when something as intriguing as this kind of holiday is never mentioned at all.

Thank you! And it used to be a British colony, and we joined them in the war, which is why many gravesites fly the Union Jack.

Thank you very much!
Incredible video! This video was made with such compassion and thoughtfulness. I'm sure those who the video was dedicated to would have loved it ❤
This video is so well put! Your story telling is so encapsulating, and the work you’ve put in to see the gate and share its history is just incredible
King of storytelling, just watched this with my landlord
Super creepy tradition. I hate it. Never heard of it before.
Poped up on my for you page, wasn't dissapoined. Great material.

Great channel, thank you for your work 🤍
Fascinating stuff!
Thanks!!
Man, this kind of event surely could only ever happen in select safe countries from ages ago.
This seriously needs at least 1MIL views holy moly
Much appreciated ❤️

Its giving, Strangers movie. 😭😭😭😭
Omg new video drop! I'm currently watching it with my tenant. Mummers wear masks but my favorite UA-camr does not 😮😮😮😮

Thanks for this!!
All I ever knew about mummers, is in the museum in Philadelphia, PA. The costumes are very glitzy.
Yes, the Philly mummers are much more colorful and vibrant then the Newfoundland ones lol
6:01 Not sure if that's the right issac if he died at the age of 10 months and 21 days

omg face reveal
Real fans know the real first face reveal is now unlisted 😮
Yeah, this would go over like a lead balloon, get it?
was pretty interested watching it until the ai images started to show, thats just straight up missinformation in the form of pictures

I would agree with you. Thanks for holding me accountable!
I can't say I've heard about this in the UK. Can someone inform me if it's region specific? Or perhaps something done some years ago?
I think it comes from a very long time ago, and takes a different form in different places. Look up "Mummers Plays" that have happened in the UK!
@@unslashcultured Okay. Thanks for the info :)
