This is why I try to be open with my sister on this thing saying stuff like have an open mind don't immediately think someone's crazy if they say something happening thats odd bc this world is odd and to be smart enough to know and question is the first step to understand or at least try to understand these things. Also teach her how to fight or be brave
I agree with those in the comments that appreciate the 2 brothers love for their sister, they are indeed awesome...But can we PLEASE appreciate Kim's Dad for checking her apartment so thoroughly??? What a dude!
I'm so glad that Melissa's brothers listened to her instead of making her feel crazy, AND even after not witnessing anything weird themselves, continued to be supportive and came to her house right away when she called them for help. Those two are AWESOME and possibly saved her life.
How terrible do you think the mother took it? I mean her own son broke into her apartment every single night and as a result she lost her friendship with someone she in a way as acting as a form of therapy for as they enjoyed being around each other.
Social anxiety isn't connected nor correlated with traumatic experiences. You don't see war Veterans being unable to leave their apartment because they're afraid the dog walker will say hey how are you!
Those fucking brothers, I love them, I'd do the same thing if my sister was afraid like this, I don't give a shit how it sounded, my little brother and I would be there until we figured it out. That girl has some damn good brothers.
@@tumbles8350 yeah technically if they had killed him on the spot nothing would have happened. He was carrying a knife. He was an intruder. It would be self defense.
Oh my god imagine how awful that poor girl’s anxiety is now. She never feels safe in public and now the sanctity of her home has been invaded. The thought of never feeling safe anywhere is horrifying.
That's why guns are referred to as the great equalizer. With proper training, which does not take long and is easy for everyone to understand, anyone can feel safe and secure.
When living alone, I had a landline with two handsets, where you could call one handset from the other. One night I was watching telly and my phone was ringing so looked and saw the other phone was calling. I answered and nothing happened. Called again, and again and again, so I called a friend to come right over while I sat frozen on my sofa. My friend turned up, we searched the house top to bottom, no sign of the other phone or someone in my house. I checked inside the sofa where I'd been sitting as the calls came in and found the other handset. I'd been arse dialing myself 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️ my friend was not impressed
Thank goodness that was all it was! I creeped myself out one night listening to ballen. My channels started to cycle through. I ended up rolling over on the remote.
God bless the father in the second story too. Actually did a really good job checking the house out and probably saved his daughter's life in the long run
If he was such a good dad, and if she was clearly unable to interact with literally anybody, even to the point of not going to the doctor to audit her medication(ffs!), he wouldn't feel she was safe living on her own. If my kid was so afraid of the world, I legit couldn't be sure they would make it out in the wild on their own, and would be a failure as a parent to teach them the social skills needed to thrive.
I live surrounded by wilderness and my brother spotted a howling noise, this wouldn’t have happened if he was ignoring my mom yelling at him. The howling was a pack of coyotes, so we all safely went into our basement.
Their has been multiple times where my little sister thinks she hears sounds in the house and I with out question immediately start searching the house just to make sure
To compound Kim's nightmare, she probably would've had to testify in court. I can't imagine how difficult that would be for somebody with extreme anxiety.
Not at all difficult. If some mentally ill person had been drugging you and sleeping next to you for a long time you desire for justice would have trumped your social anxiety.
I guarantee she didn’t set foot inside a court room as there would be no need for her to do so unless she wanted to speak to prosecutors and the judge directly requesting/explaining something specific that would alter outcomes. And that’s before factoring in her detailing her anxiety disorder. In my case, which was FAR worse (they caved my skull in and stole my car) they told me directly that they would understand if I didn’t want to sit in the courtroom after I was out of surgery.
@@alexcisneros2980 that’s not how social anxiety works. It doesn’t just switch on and off, no matter how much you ‘desire’ something. I’m sure it was extremely hard for her.

The creep who would sleep next to his victim should have gotten WAY more than just 3 years in prison. I have no doubt in my mind that, had she woke up and saw him, she would have been murdered. It's how most of these situations play out.
(Edit: I've also heard it said "change the man, change the locks." It could literally save your life. Just a mind blowing fact. There is a condition called Aphantasia in which it is impossible for you to see things in your minds eye. @@xXTwigManXxWow! Way to go, buddy. Way to ignore the fact that Kim has a form of intense anxiety that makes it difficult for her to interact with people, let alone society as a whole. That's like saying that someone with Autism or Down Syndrome or any other mental disorder should just ignore their illness and just get on with their lives. While it is possible for them to have their own lives, their disorders will make it more difficult than it really is. You don't just move on just like that, just like how you can't ignore a migraine/headache. Hell, I'm someone who is in the spectrum of Asberger's Syndrome, and while I can say that I have indeed made a life of myself, it came after several years of going through life with support from my father after moving out of my mom's house, because she was never gonna help me succeed the same way my dad did, because all she wants is to keep me under her wing. And guess what, I still get moments of panic/stress when things get rough for me. And I'm not very confrontational, if I can avoid confrontation, I'll do so like the Black Plague. I *can* speak up, but only in situations where push comes to shove, because otherwise I don't want to make things more difficult than they already might be. So, are you saying that Kim should just ignore her anxiety and move on with her life like nothing happened? Because let me tell you something: THAT AIN'T HAPPENING! Or at least, not that easily. Especially after what she went through with that sicko who was Olivia's son. Your statement just sounds like something you'd say because you don't understand nor can't relate to the situation at hand. Almost tasteless even. And that just rubs me the wrong way.
I think the "psycho" title is a little unjust. Her son most likely had a delusional disorder called erotomania, characterised by an undoubted belief that they are in a relationship with somebody when they aren't. Keep in mind it is a delusional disorder and the relationship he had with her, although fictitious, was just as real to him as our own actual relationships are to us. I'm not saying this excuses any of his actions, and I hope he apologised after he got help (if he got help). I just think in situations like these we should use a little more empathy instead of just writing them off as psychopaths and creeps.
@@sammi1841 Sammie, I didn't know about this condition. It makes me sad because we judge so quickly when we're so ignorant. @C Patir Quite the opposite actually. People with erotomania are rarely homicidal. It saddens me to see that some people would rather help stigmatise mental illness rather than try to understand it, even though more stigma means more untreated "psychos" walking around.

That literally makes her the perfect victim. Seriously think about it, who’s you target? Someone who hides away and isn’t interacting with people. Or someone who has friends and is constantly around people.
I wish I could meet her This sounds creepy, but when someone is victimized by someone, it makes me want to be around that person 24/7 just to keep them safe This is because of two people in my life having a similar experience, and me being powerless to prevent it Let’s just say that some men need to control their urges better, my younger sister still experiences trauma, even saying that at times, her hands look like his, and I’ve had to pick her up from school multiple times because it was too much to even be in the same building as that little fucker, and my friend, she stayed quiet for a while, until she heard my sister’s story and gave me info for a therapist and explaining it to me Since then, I’d become a lot more protective of every female in my life, because I don’t wanna see them get hurt, friends, family, I have three sisters, and I refuse to let any of them get hurt ever again

Always change the locks on the doors when you buy a new house to you. You have no idea who might still have keys to the original locks. First day, plan and buy new locks. It was smart of her brothers to booby trap the TV so their sister knew for sure some one was definitely downstairs.
Unfortunately if you live in an apartment you have to give the landlord the key which would not have helped the victim at all. It's usually in your lease you aren't allowed or if you do landlord must have a copy in case of emergencies.
Yeah…I doubt they planned that as a booby trap. They were probably just being brothers, watching TV at their sister’s house. They had the volume where they wanted it & when they turned the TV off, that’s where the volume stayed. But, it worked!!
@@RebeccaGallin I just moved into my first high-rise and my landlord permitted those hotel slides bars on the door to the hallway....where the ball slides down the hoop and stops door opening completely, better than a chain. So it stops repairmen or landlord unlocking and walking in, and would make a bunch of noise if a prior tenant tried entering with a key. I hope it helps!!
@@RebeccaGallin (I'm a landlord.) In most states, it's illegal for the landlord to use the key unless the tenant has abandoned the unit, is being evicted (has to be done with a police escort), or the police need to get in. In fact it's illegal for the landlord to even enter the unit (if the door is open) without the tenant's permission. I keep the spare keys inside a safe so only I can get to them, though it does require the tenants to trust that I won't use them illegally. The slides and chains (like you find in hotel rooms) would've prevented the second story, but they only work when the tenant is at home. When they leave the house, there's no way to close those to secure the door. So an intruder or rogue landlord could go in then and prepare a second method of entry (like unlock a window so it can be slid open from outside). I do encourage tenants to put up security cameras inside (I have cameras covering the outside). You can configure the newer ones to send a notification to your phone or even view it remotely if it detects movement inside while you're gone.

That last story was sad in so many ways. When the killer said "now I feel safe I'll have a better home than I've had in years" after his sentencing it gives you a glimpse into his mind.
Crazy. He should have just asked her out. The mom could have introduced them but he had to be super weird about it.

If he hadn't been so isolated and almost definitely depressed I wonder if he would have been capable of murdering his friend? When I moved to CA 2yrs ago, I discovered Mr. Ballen videos. I was going through a lot, (a break up) and his videos helped calm me so I would watch his videos before falling asleep. After 2yrs of being miserable in CA, I decided to move back to Az where my family lived. While I was looking for a new apartment in Az, I stayed temporarily at my sister and her husbands house. Night time comes around on that first night, so I get settled in bed about to start a Mr Ballen video when I suddenly hear his intro music very loudly upstairs. Turns out they also watch his videos before bed too. I went up there, we ate some popcorn and had a Mr Ballen marathon until 4am (just like younger kids would do at a sleep over) lol
I can guarantee you that someone in your life does the same thing and you don't even know it lol
