Hi! I want to learn editing, and I really Was confused on which one to use. I downloaded Resolve because it's for free but not sure really. If you are saying this program is better for you after 15 years... I've got no more questions

I LOVED FCPro 7. I could easily put in an 8 hour day and never once did I feel like the software was in my way. FPX was such a disappointment that I continued to use FCPro7 through around 2019 when I finally decided to jump over to the PC and Davinci Resolve.
You just made switching from Premiere look like the best thing i've ever done in my life. I think I love you and Davinci. You're skill level at training is OFF. THE. CHARTS. Thank you sooooo much!!!!!!
As someone coming to Davinci after putting up with years of Vegas crashes, this crash course, so far, is incredible! The multi cam sync feature is fantastic, especially since we record separate audio. Great explanation between Edit and Cut.
Best software introductory video ever made. After using semi-pro, simpler programs, DaVinci Resolve seemed somewhat intimidating - but after watching this everything seems intuitive and familiar.
After watching I think I can stop searching for other tutorials, because this one told me everything I need for a start. Thank you very much! It was so useful! You did a great job! Promise to come back to learn other stuff!

This is, without a doubt, the best Davinci Tutorial I've found to date. Well done Casey. It's so bloody good that 30 min in I stopped the video and removed Final Cut Pro (that I've been using for YEARS) from my MacBook Pro.
The best tutorial I've found on DaVinci Resolve for beginner so far. Very easy to understand and pleasing to listen and watch. Must thank you for this.
Thank you Casey for this wonderful and extremely easy to learn Davinci Resolve (DR) video ....I downloaded the free DR version (Windows, v18 beta 3) and have been "tinkering" for about 2 weeks with it after watching/following many excellent instructional videos (specifically - Casey Feris, Jason Yadloviski, MrAlexTech and Patrick Sterlingand, no particular order). I have also re-edited/re-made several previous vidoe editing/creation efforts to help me learn DR better. This instructional video really helped bring home the difference in the Edit and Fusion pages and how I can utilize each more appropriately/effictively. I have now purchased a Studio license and am waiting for it to arrive (then uninstall Free and reinstall Studio). Not that it's needed, but a little background to help with context ... I am a retired Aerospace Engineer (GE Aviation, designed/built jet engines) and have occaisionally made personal movies/slideshows from family and hobby endeavors (I'm a scuba diver) using Android/Apple and GoPro devices. My video editing background is using Cyberlink's PowerDirector (v13 and v20) and although it is a pretty friendly tool, it is specifically targeted for the consumer-market (me). But I am wanting to do more (not professional but do more family, hobby and also chruch-based videos to help augment our ministries) and so am launching into Davinci Resolve with both feet. Again, thanks for all you are doing to help people (me) learn video editing (with DR) and stoke our passion to be better and do more ... please keep it up! I truly appreciate your humor and the great/friendly teaching style in your videos ... I ALWAYS learn something from them (especially the device to watch and do on own to learn where I thought I knew but couldn't remember how). As a final comment, I appreciatd the advice on the use of keyboard shortcuts, middle-mouse buttons, and other tricks - it's so easy when you know all of those items to take advantage of them during a video and we newbies are scratching our head on how you did some of these now "riding a bike" skills ... they were helpful. Please consider having a video dedicated to just hat topic.
Ever since I've upgraded myself from Windows Video to Davinci free version to paid version, I've never looked back. I am enjoying myself editing videos with this super cool software and I'm still ripping off all the great essence out of it. It's an amazing must have tool to edit your video. I highly recommend this software.
You really boosted me up to switch from Adobe Premiere to DaVinci, its a lot to grasp but this crash course covered almost everything and you made it very simple so anyone can learn and apply. Such a long video but I can hardly remember that I have ever seen such a long video on youtube, you made the course interesting and clear. Thanks Casey 👍😃
Excellent video. I’ve been using DaVinci Resolve for months. I was quick to jump into color grading without understanding the basics of the software. This video is a master class of the fundamentals. Great content.
My best spent 1h 40 mins in quite some time! As a convert from Avid Media Composer I couldn't have asked for a better crash course on DaVinci Resolve. Truly outstanding work, Casey. Thanks so much for everything I just learnt on this incredible integration of editing, compositing, colour grade, audio post and delivery the Black Magic way. Best Regards, Jon
I'm sliding into Resolve from Premier Elements, and I'm blown away by how much more I can now do. This video is saving me hours of hair pulling, thank you very much for taking the time to put it together. Number 5 alive!!
I’ve been using Final Cut Pro and and After Effects for my entire career in video and film-making, going back 20 years. I know those apps extremely well. I just watched this video through, and although I haven’t yet edited a single thing in Resolve, I am now completely convinced to switch over as my primary. Incredible application! Can’t wait to start digging deeper.
I don't usually comment on videos but this guy makes this shit look way too easy , when I first opened Resolve after downloading it scared me more than any horror movie . Didn't open the it 2 months straight . You're doing great work buddy , keep it up.
Nice walkthrough Casey. I love you resolve videos as you help people like me who are just getting into video editing. You make the tutorial so easy to follow and it makes my life so much easier. Thank you for all your hard work and catch you on the next one 👍🏻
As a brand new editor I can tell you how much I appreciate the content you provide. Was very daunting trying to decide which software to learn from the ground up. I have no bad habits per say as I have never really used anything. I have spent alot of time watching videos and recomendations on editing software and I have decided Resolve is just the best for me and it seams like outside of those editors that "Have been using PP and AE my whole career" for someone new coming in looking to learn and design in an advanced setting this is the best choice. I'll start fee until I hit a wall then I will def purchase. Quick qustion (theres probably a video) but do you have a export for your keybinds that you use? We have a similiar style in arrangement of workflow I feel like and learning on your binds just feels like the right option. Casey thanks gain. Great content. I appreciate everything you put into it.
Question, as a learning editor where do you get content to train on ? I really want to start video editing but I don't have and idea how to star getting Hands on, Thanks.
@@nadirthek7883 There are tools that will allow you to download youtube videos. Barring that, sometimes I use zoom or OSB to screen record content. (OSB= Open Source Broadcaster)
I've used Resolve a bit here and there nothing too fancy but gotta love how much you can learn watching a video for beginners even if you used the software for a while
Pro Tip: NEVER USE THE DELETE KEY on the edit page. If you want to remove a clip, select it and hit the backspace key. Then, if you want to remove the gap as well, select the gap between clips and hit the backspace key again. I know this sounds like more work, but believe me, this will save you heart ache. The delete key does something somewhat unusual in Davinci Resolve; particularly if you are working in multiple layers. When you delete a clip off the timeline it also removes the gap without proper respect to the various layers of all the clips to the right. What that means is if you have nearly finished a project and then go back to remove 1 clip from the middle, using delete can screw up ever edit to the right of that on the timeline. If you insist on trying it, experiment carefully and be prepared to hit undo (Ctrl-Z) if you are not happy with the outcome. It may be that there is some special case that this IS what you wanted to do. But I found repeatedly that DELETE caused nothing but trouble. I have stopped using it entirely. Since I don't use the cut page at all, I am not sure how DELETE responds on that page. I am only saying this regarding the edit page.
I love Premiere, I really do but at this point it feels like that crappy GF you've been with for 10 years and you're only with her because it's comfortable. Meanwhile, Davinici is the girl you're actually supposed to be with who actually treats you right and cares about you. Great content, Casey!
I received an activation code for this software when I bought my Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 6K, and I'm at the point where even thinking about opening up Premiere Pro or After Effects will just automatically give me that overwhelming burnout feeling before I even import a single footage. From crappy workflow to always running low on disk space due to pre-rendering and the like. I'm swearing off PP and AE. Thanks for this tutorial. Extremely helpful and no questions asked from me.
Just got a Mac Studio with the purpose to editing the 2 years of action camera, drone and 360 degree footage that I have generated. DaVinci Resolve seemed to be the obvious no investment choice and you, sir, have done a fantastic job of getting me up to speed on the basics - enough to start with my first project. Thanks for the wonderful crash course!
I am not a total noob regarding editing, but I was getting frustrated with Openshot. Having watched your introduction’s to Devinci Resolve 18, several times, I bit the bullet, downloaded, and following your tutorials, I have just uploaded my first creation to my UA-cam channel. I do motorcycle vlogs, so nothing too technical, but extremely happy with the results. Thanks so much for your help.
I've been working with Vegas Pro for more than a decade, I've been working with Premiere Pro for the last couple of years and just a week ago made the switch to Davinci Resolve and DAMN, this editing suite ist basically Premiere Pro, After Effects and Audition in one + IT'S FREE! Your tutorial gave me a lot more insight into Fusion especially! Thank you man!!
I just downloaded Resolve earlier this week because i am just starting my youtube channel, and i thought there must be a better way than Windows Movie Maker 😂 i was overwhelmed, but determined to learn the interface and controls. This is the BEST course on youtube to learn deeper into the "Basics". I had to save this video for future reference. Thank you so much!!
I've been cutting my video editiing teeth using Descript for the past few months, and I've found this video to be very useful, and easy to understand. Thank you!!
I needed to brush up on Resolve..This tutorial, covers all your bases for us intermediates, without slowing down and wasting time, explaining the basics. I will refer to this tutorial again, next time I am dusting of resolve to edit a project. Thank you.
WOW, I feel like I should park my steam engine and put the box camera away. Been a photographer for 50 years. I guess things have changed, lol. And you do an amazing presentation highlighting Resolves capabilities and the zillion "hidden" features I would never have found. I've had many aviation related instructors over the years, which has also gotten very technical. So many very knowledgeable educators fail at presenting the basics and jump into the level that needs a foundation to be meaningful. Thank you. I am going to keeping watching and learning, and using Resolve. BM owes you big time. Tim
This is awesome. I haven't done any editing for about a year and had forgotten a lot. Within the first 10 minutes of your video, I learned more than I knew (like the media page and bins which I have never used), before. Thank you.
Took me years to master Adobe Premiere. It is not easy transitioning to DaVinci. Most especially with nodes etc. But you have done an excellent job of walking through the necessary steps to master. Well done.
Yesterday I bought a new laptop for media processing. Downloading DaVinci Resolve 18 as my first app after watching your crash course with Kevin Stratvert. Grateful for the guidance this specific video has provided. Feeling confident with the software, and excited to start creating!
Duuuuuude!! Blew my mind. My face when the mountain moved up with the mask using modes and how easy you made a damn great looking logo. Ha. Then the colour grading.... then audio. Hell this has sold me on downloading Davinci. Everything you've explained is so clear, just awesome. (If UA-cam doesn't work out - I doubt it coz you're content is great - then getting into sales product demo's is for you... you'll be able to sell anything to anyone, brilliantly done).
Coming from Premiere Pro, this felt like I'm right at home. Also I never knew that Davinci basically is Adobe Premiere Pro, Audition, After Effects and Media Encoder all in one, crazy! Thank you for making this tutorial! You made my transition to Davinci easier than I thought!
been using DR for a few years as a hobby - man do I wish I would have had this video - at the start. Amazing training. Cant wait to dig into your specific tools training.
Looks like quite the learning curve for a mechanic and creator who uses iMovie until now. The transition will be a bit easier with your instruction, thank you. Hope to start using it January to improve my auto related content.
I tired to figure out the Fusion page a few years ago and looked around youtube. There were ZERO good tutorials yet everywhere I looked, everyone was ranting and raving about how great Resolve was. I had my suspicions that everyone recommended it because it was free but few actually knew how to use it beyond basic editing. Many were instead commercials for pre packaged effects. This crowd has an incentive NOT to teach you how to use Fusion. I've used Premiere and others in the past few years but I decided to take a second look at Resolve lately. Your tutorial was the best I've ever seen and actually makes sense of it all.
I've owned the full studio version on Resolve for over a year and struggled with switching from Premiere Pro, which I've used for a decade or so. This video helped A LOT. I'm finally confident enough to cancel my Adobe subscription for all my client work going forward. Thanks Casey, you're a life (and money) saver! Cheers Fred
I've been editing for over 20 years and 2-3 with Resolve but I learned a few great tricks (short cuts) here today. I think that global link bypass is my favorite. I do a lot of unlinking clip by clip manually. Its important to note that while this may be a lot to take in as a beginner, after you have gathered the basics, this is also a great refresher on tools you may have overlooked or not known you needed during the first pass.
Thank you Casey. 10 months into using Resolve (after years on Premier) and I finally got to watch this one in full before I jump into your fusion course. I've learnt a lot watching this one, mostly things I didn't know about fusion, Fairlight and use of nodes. Thank you.
@@kdramachats Its worth it. I've learnt a lot by just trial and error, a few youtube videos along the way, and mostly those from Casey. Dont get blocked out by the new platform, its very similar and more intuitive. Enjoy
As someone who hasn't used an editing software before, apart from The color correction, fusion and fairlight section, getting into it unbelievably intuitive
Love hitting up Casey's videos when I'm stuck. Casey seems like a person I would like to just chill with in person. Keep up the cool vibes and good work man!
Excellent video! When i first installed and loaded resolve the first time and saw all the controls and features..i was SUPER overwhelmed! This video took a lot of that overwhelming feeling away! Thanks!
I am in agreement with most of the comments below. This tutorial is the most straight-forward one I've viewed out of dozens on Davinci. I'm a total beginner who has only used ShotCut and was a little afraid to move on to such an advanced editor, but I finally did it, and am looking forward to watching many more of your videos.
Other people have already said as much, but dang your good. I almost never leave comments, but I really felt I had to on this one. As a very small time creator, I've been wrestling with editing for months. I'm only halfway through your tutorial and I'm already breathing a little easier. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
i was getting a little overwhelmed with this Davinci but as you really got into Fusion it is all coming together... i just was yelling at myself why i never got Davinci in the first place... Fusion makes sooo much since...along the rest,,, yes it is alot but it put all my others apps in just one place i love that... 🤘
Excellent! And I finally got the Cut page. I actually watched the whole tutorial and learned something new in every part. I really like the speed and density of your videos (I will just skip back 10 seconds if I need to).
This video is going to save me days of effort. I'm learning video editing from scratch from the first time and in less than 2 hours this has taught me 10 times more than my day of playing around with Davinci.
Just decided to start learning to use Davinci Resolve 18 properly. I've used it before but only on the surface (in the edit page mainly) and this is the first video I've watched to start. Thanks so much for putting this content available to us, I subbed and cannot wait to learn more with your other videos!
This was an amazing video! I'm the old dog trying to learn new tricks. I was just about to delete the Davinci because of the level of complication in learning but you have brought new light to the app. Coming from iMovie to Resolve is quite the leap. Thanks!
Finally saying good bye and good riddance to FCP X.This was an intense and VERY helpful insight into Resolve 18 for an editor who started cutting film on moviolas , then Steenbecks and Kems, then Edit DV, then Premiere, then Final Cut through Ver 7, then down the toilet of FCP Pro. Hallelujah, I'm saved!!! Bravo, I'm really looking forward to this experience. Mahalo from Maui.
Man this video is one of the best Davinci tutorial I have seen. Very clear and precise, it shows that you know the program and most importantly you know the world of editing. I'm starting the switch from Final Cut and looking for info and this is by far the best video I've found. Congratulations!
Great job Casey! I learned so much from this video. When I first opened DaVinci Resolve it was very overwhelming not knowing how to get started as there are a ton of features in this product. Your presentation of the material was perfect for me and you covered the key aspects of each page. Thanks for putting this together and sharing!
If I wasn’t sold on resolve before this video, I definitely am now lol. Probably the best rundown and explanation video on pretty much anything I’ve watched.
it's really one of the most enjoyable and well spent hour of these last months, way better than to watch any of those blabla turorials...thank you. the perfect Davinci resolve movie lol
Dude, I've watched it in full like twice. Thanks a lot for this content, it's instructive. For someone who's not really new to video editing as I have worked before with both Vegas and Hitfilm, this was full of new things to learn, so I've needed to watch it multiple times. Very helpful! Thanks again and keep it up!
I'm an absolute beginner to video editing so your free teaching videos on Resolve have been GREAT. I'll be taking your Introduction course to start with in July and then your UA-cam and Color Grading courses. It is amazing that Resolve has such a comprehensive free version. I did see a video about how they use method this to market their hardware. For me this is the beginning of a career change. At first it seemed like an unclimable mountain especially when I discovered the User Manual is almost 4000 pages! However I feel confident that with your training I"ll pick it up and gradually increase my skills over time. Really Looking forward to being creative :) Cheer Adam
Casey has explained all the pages - especially the fusion page - in a terrific manner. As a beginner it is very difficult to wrap my head around the concept of nodes but with your friendly explanations it become far less daunting. Thanks a ton!
I have used a number of video editing software over the years, all much less intimidating than Resolve, so I really appreciate your tutorials. I will be learning much more as I begin using version 18.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! This comprehensive introduction finally sets the stage for me to actually start trying out the intimidating tasks of working with Davinci Resolve.
I can't believe they don't prompt you to setup proxies after install, it's insane how much they help and I had no idea they existed until I saw this, thanks homie
I've been using Vegas for years now. I think 2024 is the year I want to learn Resolve and really up my video editing skills. So far your tutorial is fantastic. Resolve doesn't seem as imposing as it did when I was just fiddling around with it. Funnily when you were discussing nodes I thought "Wow this is a lot more complicated than layers", but then when you started using masks to animate the logo, my jaw hit the floor. Obviously getting used to everything will be a slow process but wow I could do a lot with this program. Thanks for your hard work!
Awesome! You can do it! A lot of it isn't much different from Vegas honestly. And yeah nodes can be intimidating, but man they are a really powerful way to work. You got this!

Hi Casey, One of our members has been having issues with 4K and understanding how to use Proxy files. He came up with this process for us to use.. Could you see if we are on the right track?
Greetings All,
I have cracked using the Proxy feature. It is essential for me when using 4K files in a project, otherwise my laptop will not cope.
Critical is that the Crash Course video does not describe how to actually create the proxies.
DVR is not needed for this process.
Follow the following steps to create the Proxy folder and files you will need.
Load the Proxy Generator App. (It can be found in the Start list of Apps under Blackmagic Design, NOT within DaVinci Resolve itself)
In the App press Add.
Navigate to the folder of interest where all the Video Files are located. (Multiple folders can be selected by Adding them to the list
Select the folder. (If you are testing this use only a couple of files in the folder of interest otherwise the processing can take a long time.)
It will appear in the Watch Folders table of the App. I tested using only one folder.
Start the process
A new folder, called Proxy, will be created within the folder holding your videos. This Proxy folder will contain your proxy files. Nothing has to be done with this folder.
You can now follow Chapter 9 of the Crash Course video by Casey.
If you haven't dragged the 4K video files into the DVR Project, do so.
Go to the Playback dropdown and select Proxy and select use the proxy from the menu.
As you can see your video has certainly helped our group.
15 years premier pro user here. You’re the first person to actually get me switch to Resolve. It’s so hard to get over 15 years of muscle memory..
I also switched after a year and feels like I've been scammed by Adobe.
@@L.I.T.H.I.U.M bro. I can't wait till I switch. I've paid Adobe over 10k
Please consider having a video dedicated to just hat topic.
typo fix ... "(especially the advice to watch and then do on your own to learn..."
I've been using Resolve for a couple of years, and still learned a couple of things from this video. Highly worthwhile.
This beginner's course was SO incredibly helpful. Thank you so much for helping me make the transition from Adobe Premiere Pro to Davinci Resolve!
Our production team just made the switch to Resolve. This was immensely helpful. Thanks for your time and hard work. -Randy
You present your information at the PERFECT speed - this is rare - Well done - Very helpful
This guy is a blessing to the Resolve community! Thank you so much Casey ❤️
Can’t wait to start digging deeper.
please, let us know how has using davinci has been in comparison.
Hi, have you switched from Final Cut Pro since this comment? Just wanted to see how it was going.
I've used both of those programs too! I'm about to switch to resolve. How has the transition been going?
I don't usually comment on videos but this guy makes this shit look way too easy , when I first opened Resolve after downloading it scared me more than any horror movie . Didn't open the it 2 months straight . You're doing great work buddy , keep it up.
Nice walkthrough Casey. I love you resolve videos as you help people like me who are just getting into video editing. You make the tutorial so easy to follow and it makes my life so much easier. Thank you for all your hard work and catch you on the next one 👍🏻
Blackmagic should hire you. This is the clearest, most concise video regarding how to use Davinci I've seen. Well done!
I'm starting in resolve and just yesterday watched your Resolve 17 Crash Course video. Heree we go againnn!
Loving your channel!
I don’t know why I am in love with this channel.......In all honesty the man behind the video is a great teacher,,,, ❤️❤️🇧🇩🇧🇩
Thank you!!
Yes … .finally someone who talks easy & not lab rat science. Keeping it simple & understood. Great work / 10/10 this channel
Well done.
I'm making the switch right now and am struggling to say goodbye to Premier Pro. Hoping I can learn Resolve quickly.
Yesterday I bought a new laptop for media processing. Downloading DaVinci Resolve 18 as my first app after watching your crash course with Kevin Stratvert. Grateful for the guidance this specific video has provided. Feeling confident with the software, and excited to start creating!
That's so awesome! You got this!!!!
Thanks! Its such a valuable content :-)
Cheers
Fred
I've been editing for over 20 years and 2-3 with Resolve but I learned a few great tricks (short cuts) here today. I think that global link bypass is my favorite. I do a lot of unlinking clip by clip manually.
Its important to note that while this may be a lot to take in as a beginner, after you have gathered the basics, this is also a great refresher on tools you may have overlooked or not known you needed during the first pass.
BRAVO! THANK YOU. Ive been editing in FCP for almost 10 years now and this video just gave me the confidence boost I needed to make the switch.
Thank you Casey. 10 months into using Resolve (after years on Premier) and I finally got to watch this one in full before I jump into your fusion course. I've learnt a lot watching this one, mostly things I didn't know about fusion, Fairlight and use of nodes. Thank you.
I'm also switching from Premier Pro (which I have loved) to DaVinci Resolve and am intimidated by having to relearn a program and start at base 1.
Thanks Casey. Even though I've been using Resolve for well over a year, I always seem to pick up a tip or two when I watch your videos.
Ditto GDN's comment 10 months ago. Awesome, clear and so informative. Gives confidence in using Davinci. Thank You!
hands down, best UA-cam Instructor/Teacher. Thank you!! Subscribed for life.
Wow mate. This is by far one of the best tutorials I have ever seen! Thank you for sharing something so valuable!
it's really one of the most enjoyable and well spent hour of these last months, way better than to watch any of those blabla turorials...thank you. the perfect Davinci resolve movie lol
I never comment on videos BUT wow. Blown away how easy you made this look. Great presentation.
I've been stumbling my way through Resolve for like two years and this video made me go, "Yo...WHAT?" so many times lmaooooo
I wish everyone making UA-cam tutorials would learn from this video. Just outstanding job!
I really appreciate your over exaggeration when showing some of color work as I'm red green color blind and don't always notice minute color changes.
You may be my new favorite UA-cam person. Thank you for doing what you do and for being you.
Fear and anxiety about the concept of nodes in Da Vinci Resolve are now almost gone. Thanks, Casey!
You got this!
man honestly, i struggle to learn through watching, and this 10/10 was able to follow on and reference back when needed, clear & easy to follow with great explanations, great work!!
Fantastic tutorial. Thanks a bunch man.
Just made the switch from Premiere and I loved DaVinci thanks to you!
I've viewed many educational films.Your presentation is outstanding, and you explained each component in a way that was exact, easy to follow, and clear. Thank you
I am in LOVE with this software. What the actual frig. I think this IS, in fact, black magic
I was intimidated by this program until I started watching your videos man thanks and I have learned a lot in just a couple weeks
One of the best vide tutorials on the site! A Plus!
