My biggest gripe about judo is that the sport is way too focused on rules, to the point that rule interpretation is more important than player skill.
bingo
I agree 100%. I also agree with Chadi regarding the direction of change of judo and his comments about the Olympics. I am also unhappy with the constant rule changes and how this has altered the focus of judo competition and practise. I remember attending my first World Chps in Maastricht 1981 - the judo was great and I was totally star-struck with the judo champions of the day.
Wow that blows!
A great champion must possess the skill and ability to win without relying on rule interpretation, luck, or the judge's subjective judgment.
Another big problem of Judo is that it doesn't have a real program for adult amateurs. Or better, it could be (the entire Gokyo, kata, self defense ecc.),but it's not considered an important part. Competitors training is the priority. 😢
"Tucking someone in bed is not a throw" - all-time classic line
Ah, you beat me to commenting on this line. Ha! Great commentary, Chadi!
This is one for the history books.
The IJF has been moving away from traditional Judo to sport Judo for a long time. Bring back tradition. Bring back the full move set. Let’s honour the martial art.
All federations do the same, promote sport and forget the art
I remember many years ago reading a passage in a book by an Italian master. He was referring to "ju-sport" as something separated from judo. I believe it was the '90s or early 2000s. Things were just starting to change, to benefit TV and the such.
I've been thinking about this. There's clearly a lot of discontent regarding the IJF, Olympic committee etc, why don't some practitioners set up small "Freestyle" Judo clubs in the same way modern BJJ clubs operate?
It might never reach the same heights as the Olympics, etc, but small local regional competitions could eventually emerge.
I'm okay with judo leaving the olympics. Judo changed into a game. We need the judo that tried to uphold the martial spirit.
Amazing comment
meanwhile, they want to remove greco from the olympics to make way for other sports. It´s just strange
As a Classical Fencer, Karateka, Judoka, and Wrestler, there hasn't been a Martial art that's Joined the Olympics and it hasn't been gutted to the detriment of the Art.
Nothing wrong with both tbh.. the Olympics brings prestige &much needed eyes onto the artform in order to supply new generations of lifeblood
@@o-wolf. That prestige is worthless when what they do is not representative of the art. The glory of Judo has not enhanced the glory of Wrestling because they are not representative of each other as specific arts and Olympic Judo is not representative of the art of Judo. The lifeblood argument does not hold to me either. If those who get into the art stay with it beyond competition and pursue the art further, that would be one thing, but that is also clearly not the case. The art will endure regardless, but much like Batareacht and Kyudo, it will persist via the dedicated and passionate.
I wish we could have a hybrid rule set of judo and BJJ where you can still win off a full point throw (the older style, no rolls or anything like that) but can grab the legs and go into extended groundwork to hunt for the submission.
At Kodokan, we used to randori like that, so Aliance bjj guys used to visit us and vice versa
I'd love to see a grappling sport that focuses on stand up like a hybrid of judo, sumo, and Greco-Roman but also includes leg attacks and only allows ground grappling for a few seconds at a time. Even the UFC used to stand the fighters up after a period of time
I agree with you 100 % I got my blackbelt 37 years ago. I see there are Ippons being handed out way to easily.
Judo has been getting watered down too much. The aim is to throw with such skill, speed and force that the opponent could not recover if they were thrown on a hard surface. I took up judo at 18 years of age and found that I never did so well in competition due to players combining over the top Jigotai and only tripping me up to get the smallest point to win the match. When I went for my black belt grading you were only allowed to win by Ippon and I did much better as it opened up my game of throwing big throws.
I don't really think the point is how "easy" ippons are today. What bothers me is that the roots of Judo as a martial art are forgetten. The point of a ippon winning the fight is that it supposedly places Uke in such a position that it's game over. Tori should have total control, technically being able to deliver a killing blow. That's why we expose the armpit in many throws BTW. That's one of the weak points in a armor and supposedly while holding an arm you can reach a tanto with the other and hit the weak point.
While admittedly that doesn't apply blindly to all valid throws, it's a philosophy. As a miminum, the forces involved should be enough to seriously injure or knock-out Uke, say on a concrete floor, or rocks.
Today I see ippons awarded to rolls. Barely no impact and after the roll, Tori has no control whatsoever of Uke. I've seen a ippon awared for rolling Uke on the back, with Tori rolling with him and landing sitting in between Uke's legs, perfectly positioned for a rear choke - a totally vulnerable position. The complete opposite of the original philosophy.
I would add that throwing someone with complete disregard to how you finish is another thing. Going for a major throw that might land someone on their back but you're a momentum carries you so far that you end up underneath them shouldn't score. It would end up getting you killed on the battlefield unless you landed with so much force at first that you knock them completely out.
100%
wdym end up underneath. if I imagine tai o toshi, if the momentum is strong, you do a roll over them
@@HantonSacu so you never see judoka (and wrestlers) end up on bottom or giving up their backs after throws?
Change the battlefield to in the streets and you got me.
100% agreed. This is a combat art, not a game. This constant addition of restrictions and leniencies is polluting the spirit of Judo. To the people responsible for this...Show some respect. Allow the people of today to see the rich legacy of this art in its true form.
Judo is a martial art that was designed to be practiced at full speed with all it's techniques except perhaps atemi waza safely. (thus I didn't see atemi waza till after shodan and we don't see it in shiai. Shiai however was not in the original format of Judo but since it's addition measures have been taken to ensure a level of safety. In the 1930's leg locks left Judo. Soon after standing arm bars left. This was done 'because' of the original spirit of Judo envisioned by Kano Shihan.
@@jimlasswell4491 I don't practice judo, I only now academic trivia, but am interested in your opinion. What was the spirit of Kano, don't fight?
@@josephmalone253 Somewhat depends on the definition of fight. If it entails; I'll meet you outside then, no. Kano was born in 1860. The Meiji restoration was a very new thing. The Samurai had been outcast for years and considered unnecessary but they had still been a factor. Martial arts learned by the non samurai were practiced for that split second you might have to defeat a sword when you had none. That's where farm implements like nunchaku became useful. Kano, a slight kid with a relatively wealthy father with a sake making business wanted to learn to defend himself at school. Dad finally relented but Kano soon saw that the demands of training with the samurai now really gone were too dangerous. Possibly having his eye on his future career and the title 'The father of modern Japanese education' he re-evaluated these training practices. Thus Judo was born from Bu or Ju Jutso. A Martial art that could be practiced using all the standard techniques, at full speed, safely. How would you do that with Karate? Judo provides you with the spatial awareness and muscle memory to deal with almost anything close; as long as you're not the aggressor. Bullies need not apply.
@@jimlasswell4491 leglocks and standing armbars were taken out because Kano considered them bullying people?
@@josephmalone253 wow, did you just take the last line out of context and apply it in a warped version of 'what if'? I believe I answered your question honestly and succinctly. I started Judo in 1967. I taught it for over forty years. This discourse is over.
Kano referred to Jodan and Gedan Judo (all encompassing and focused on only one aspect) he did not like Gedan and considered Shiai to be that. He worried that the essence (ki) of Judo would be warped by Shiai but saw it as the stimulus to bringing Judo to worldwide attention. Kano was first and foremost an educator after all. A man came to my dojo once to join us, donned his well worn gi and white belt and stepped on the mat. After about five minutes of watching him with one of my students I called him over and asked him where his real belt was. He had studied Judo in England and later in Japan with the Kyoto Police while he taught English where he gave private English lessons for two years. He was afraid Americans viewed Japanese Judo as 'watered down'. They did no kata. For my Shodan I displayed all forty throws, all hold downs, all chokes, all arm bars and was Tori for the Nage no Kata. That an American Olympic medalist does not know the name of her favorite kansetsuwaza sickens me. You are correct Chadi no facet of Judo was about winning by causing the other to lose.
I see you're a lifelong Judo teacher.
What can you expound upon concerning the empty jacket method of Kano Jujutsu/Judo?
Thank you sir.
@@SoldierAndrew I've never heard or read of an 'empty jacket method'. As far as I know Kano would have referred to the top of a Judo gi as uwagi
@@SoldierAndrew Never heard of the 'empty jacket' method.
Modern sport Sambo looks more like judo than judo itself.
💯
If only there was chokes
@@mrboy9658 that’s always been weird. However, most Sambo players compete in judo. Heck, I had a judo coach that grew up doing Sambo. He said when judo tourneys happened he put on a judo gi. When Sambo tourneys happened he put on the kurtka.

The Olympics need Judo not the other way around! Amen Chadi!
Careful, therewas serious talk of removing all combat related events including fencing and all wrestling
@@baoxidiaoyu really? Why fencing and wrestling? Those are Renaissance arts? Was this an attempt to put them on par with actual combat arts? I think most likely.
You say that like it’s a bad thing?
All combat sports/events/arts are better off without the modern Olympics.
@@psychedashell I think Olympics bad for combat too.
Bring back leg grabs!
I agree completely with the stuff like "rolling" or "following" people onto their back after an incomplete throw/turning them over to get an ippon.. imo it's supposed to be a powerful throw where you have control. For me at least the functionality and relevance of Judo comes from the idea of the ippon, because it essentially means "yeah he threw him on the back/head, on any other surface he wouldn't be getting back up, so he wins". Now if someone stumbles after an attempt from either of you and lands on their butts you can just push into them into the ground and get points.
You have clearly never competed in any Judo competition. If you would have done Judo professionally than you would know what you are saying is nonsense and impossible to be as fair as possible. Do not judge high-level judo while being just a spectator of the sport. And i am not defending todays rules, but Riner was countered and it was a clear score.
You are also mistaken. It was a competition (the highest) and he wasn't score. And you have no experience at that level too.... this argument is fallacious... it is a roll over and not a judo projection. No one is defeated in real life battle with that roll... it is only a turn over it should Never have been taken into consideration has a point since early 2000. There is a misleading direction of judo to greco roman battle: it is not the same sport ! More and more People dislike judo because of these koka-throws counted tokay as waza ari or ippon. It is a non-sense...
@@honzajansky2938 He is right lol. Otherwise tell me your name so i can google how many olympic medals you have. If you don't there is nothign that makes you the superior source of knowledge.
When it gets to this point, you're right, it's ceases to be a martial art and is focused mostly on entertainment. It's a terrible thing when people who don't understand a discipline make its rules.
I think that maybe one of the reasons why there's now a quite big amount of competitions is that the amount of competitors themselves also grew drastically through years
I love Judo and practiced for many years. I think the Russian desreved at least a waza ari, for he made a counter throw attempt and Riner's shoulders rolled onto the tatami. These are 100+Kg Judokas so the Big Throws don't always occur. Cheers.
Good ideas here sir, but I have played Judo since 1962, and the organizations have always been off the mark. They are there for themselves and not for Judo.
This video made me want to cheer. THANK YOU for making this.
I agree I love Judo too,I'm glad you brought it up. My Judo class in the beginning was traditional after the pandemic the value went to gym class and not even knowing how to tie their Judo Gi. and I troun to leave or stay and teach as much the right way . Thank you keep up the good work!!! Miriam
Great video Chadi san! Muito obrigado!
The first big mistake is that Morote-gari was banned.
It is extremely difficult to throw an opponent who is focused on protecting only his upper body.
Thanks for the video, Chadi. I got back to judo last year after over 31 years and feel disappointed that a lot of judokas focus on just winning the fight using the rules instead of THROWING people. I also watched the fight of the French guy and can't believe the Russian didn't get the medal...
The Russian guy - Inal Tasoev did actually get the Gold medal! That means that his throw was awarded in the Golden score! So, the question is - why Teddy Riner also got the Gold medal?!
Thank you for making this video! I love Judo very much and it’s true the excessive rules are killing the sport
Words of Wisdom... Merci beaucoup Chadi, super vidéo
Chadi. I must admit. This is one of your best videos, sir. Very well said and supported. Especially the Football/Olympics example.
Very good subjects to be discussed and fixed. You are 100% right in your comments. Thank you.
I agree with all you say, Chadi. Excellent video!
I absolutely applaud you for this video that highlights something I've long since felt about Judo.
My experience of Judo is from 1971 to 1975, so not very long, but I remember how changes to rules back then we're already affecting the art of Judo. I guess it's what is to be expected when sport rules for competition override any fundamental principles of the true combative art form. The same can be seen in other sports related to martial arts.
Love your love for Judo. I'm planning to visit a club this week. Wish me luck.
Great video, you addressed the problem honestly.👏
An excellent critique, Chadi! 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
I agree about the overscoring of poor throws and the loss of the beautiful clean dynamic techniques of the past. Bring back the nuanced scoring of the yuko and koka! (and reintroduce the leg grabs!) Unlikely to need so many golden scores either. Always enjoyed the flag waving decisions in tight matches in any case.
Also, why reduce the osaekomi times? Fighters never used to tap out when held.
Next, I believe the mixed teams weight categories deliberately exclude the far greater pool of more skillful players incl. up and coming juniors who exist at the lighter weights. I would switch to U66, U81,and U100, plus U52, U63, and U78kg. Who decided to start at light middleweight?
This would improve the quality of the competition and also allow more nations to field teams, plus make it more realistic for fighters to go up a single category. This would produce some fascinating and otherwise unlikely matchups and remove the tedious open weight bouts where the few great technical judoka appear to have been Japanese like the ‘diminutive’ Muneta .
🤷🏾♂️🇬🇧
I think mixed team is bad, better than women and men compete separately. And for men would be 66,73,81,90,+90
I couldn’t agree more Chadi! 🙌💯
Thank you 🙇🏻♂️
Love the amount if passion displayed in this Chadi! It happens, by fluke, to jibe very closely with my opinions on Judo. Even in my studies, it seems, teagically that even Kano himself would be less likely to be imoressed by the effect of the Olympics, which he worked so hard for. It does seem to be turning competitors into games as opposed to combat. Then again, it is likely human nature to do this. However when such luminaries as Neil Adams firget rule changes, one has to wonder deeply: is Judo travelling in a good direction? I have my doubts, tbh...
*tragically
*impressed
*forget

Someone needs to explain to me why when
Tosoyev countered riner it didn't count but when Pinot did it to niizoe in the teams it counted. Is it cause riner and Pinot are both french cause that's how it's looking from here
This whole video reminded me of how that karate guy won gold at the olympics by getting kicked too hard in the face.

A perfectly executed throw is a thing of beauty. Some of the players are just dragging their opponents to the ground and it’s horrible to see.
I love the retro footage you feature in your videos. Is there a public archive where these can be viewed?
Sensei, maybe I am not a formal student of yours but you have my support. Something similar is happening with Karate do, I can undertsand the idea to create a set of rules to create a safe combat, but in order to create a Throw I think I need use both hands in order to create a save throw, but The Olimpic Comitee said it looks like Judo, Karate and Judo (and the others japanese martial arts) need to be close to each other, learn from each other but keeping the fundamentals. Even the great teachers/founders of karate train in Judo. I send you a blessing sensei and hope someday have the honor to train with you and greentings from Venezuela
As a karateka I was going to post the same comment but you said it for me. Big organizations like the Olympics and WKF ruin the purity of combat sports.

Totally agree. That's why I don't watch Judo competitions : I'm just confused all the time.
Even during practice, I try something new, and I'm sometimes told I wouldn't be able to do that in competition. So as well as trying to learn proper Judo, I have to think constantly about the many small things I can and can't do. It's complicated.
But they still teach you things that might not be allowed in competition, right?
Fully agree with you...
I got my 2 Dans Black belt 30 years ago.... I definitively love Judo but when I look at Grand Slams competitions nowadays I am always disapointed with new rules and interpretations made by referees.
Seems that now the topic is to win by Shido at Golden Score for a majority of Judokas..
Koka and Yuko disapeared to score and Shido is pushed up.
Medals are the main target to reach and money with sponsors are modifying the true original spirit of Judo..
Many throws or movements have been forbidden and as a result I barely see a great throw leading to Ipon..
More and more technics of Jiu Jitsu during Ne waza too now..
I cannot say I like modern Judo and I still teach my son old traditional Judo and most of all I teach him the spirit of Judo in daily life
Very well said
absolute right you are
totally valid points...
I agree so much with you!
Super video chadi.
Agree! Some of the rules changes came from trying to stay in the Olympics (leg grabs, I believe.) Maybe Judo doesn't need to be in the Os, anymore. I don't know how much Judo benefits from being in the Os; I don't know how many people even realize that we are in the Os. On rules: 1st thought is that you should only penalize a player for an action that is endangering one or the other player. I would love to see them bring back the koka--if one player is stalling, award the other a koka, without stopping the action, might not be important at the time, but it would stop a lot of the Golden Scoring matches.
I'm going to mention the elephant in the room here... You will have a far more "combat" focused "Judo" when you go to an MMA or submission grappling coach who has a strong Judo background in conjunction with BJJ & wrestling, who integrate Judo into a more finishig-focused gameplan, rather than just playing by whatever rules int'l judo decides to concoct. Someone like Jason Flores, Justin Morris, or Jeff Lawson (a few others too).
One thing that's for sure with judo is that the rules will change again. The people in charge watch this videos, fine work chadi
Thanks for this video, Judo .. Beautiful art done the right way by those who are traditional and those who keep Judo, Judo!
whoa dude good points, i love judo
I agree with you 100%.
Many of the issues you addressed in your video are fixed in Sambo. I am a black belt in Judo and competed at a repetitively high level before transitioning to Sambo due to circumstance. I’ve found their lack of rules for gripping and the addition of leg grabs actually leads to more aggression than in modern Judo with its endless amount of rules limiting technique and grips.
Not all countries have sambo,e.g Nigeria
@@pelejahosoba4032Sambo is underrated. Needs more attention.
Thank you Chadi, somebody has to say it like it is!
You're soooo right!
Great positioning!!!
This World Judo Championship was one of the most boring I've ever seen. I am very disappointed by the direction it took. And with all due respect to governing board, including Neil Adams, their "BANNING MODE" is nothing less that just to make the work of "judges" easy instead of preserving the Beauty of Judo
I can see why Chris Adam the brother of Neil Adam went into pro wrestling. It may be scripted but more moves than judo. Now these days there are legit catch wrestling competition. Something Chris Adam didn't experience in his time. Or how some judokas were told they were too old. Laetitia Blot of France was told she was too old for judo. Then she decided to go to women freestyle wrestling and sambo. Now she in MMA. And training with a guy who have black belts in bjj and luta Livre ( mix of catch wrestling and judo). Her dream is to go to UFC.
Laetitia Blot trains with Nicolas Reneir. Who have black belts in bjj and luta Livre.
Bring back old school judo
Thank you Chadi, i agree with everything you said.
I am a lifetime martial artist with experience in judo and bjj. But my focus has always been karate-do. And unfortunately we (karate ka) are having the exact same problems. There is too much to get into specific details. But since the ioc got a hold of karate, things have gone downhill to the point where i simply dont even spectate unless my own students are actively competing in the ring.
The way things are going, I truly cannot consider (competitive) karate a martial art anymore.
Exact same thing has happened with taekwondo. Look at the tkd matches from 80s, 90s and early 2000’s compared to now. Matches today resemble ballet dancing. Olympics did the same thing and killed this once upon a time feared martial art.
Karate isn't an Olympic sport anymore. People like me pushed for its exclusion.
@@LordFarquaad35 yes. These comparisons were used to pull karate from Olympics. It is not going to be in the next Olympics.
Even after being pulled, the ioc still has a huge amount of influence into the rule changes in competition. These changes started way before the last Olympics and will continue regardless of the fact that karate was pulled.
Chadi, can we make a comparison between Japanese competition rules and the IJF Rules and than try to make a positive critic in terms to actually agree on what the rules should be?
I mean there are some rules which you were open about to which I agree f.e. give back the leg attacks let's maybe make a summary of them.
Funny thing i was at a local competiion last weekend and just overhead some discussion from black belts and amateurs:
- what if we would start competiting with old rules...
- yes, but than you would have to start your own federation
Another one:
- That's why judo loses support, because it's hard to explain the rules to random people.
Is it that impossible to start a Traditional JUDO federation?
“It’s the Olympics that need judo, not the other way around.”
Heck yeah!!!! 💯!!!!
I agree with you one hundred percent.
Do you reckon a company starting something similar to Combat Karate is doing but for Judo? Bring old rules back w/ leg grabs. I see that combat Karate is trying to restore what old Karate was, maybe it will have an impact for Judo?
Freestyle Judo in the US is doing that
I`m with you for almost everything, specially because i see the same thing, the same discutions in Karate/Jiu Jitsu rules. Karate for exemple if your opponent puts himself in danger, and get a "knockdown" or even a knockout, you are the one punished.
But i have to desagree on you about the olimpics..
In just two words: Spot on!
Completely agree 👏
Nice video
Great video. So many people agree. Is there a way to create a mass petition of sorts? There must be some way to organize something.
Great video with good ideas and thoughts in it.
And finally someone with common sense about the final Riner vs Tasoev. The French tried to fight the whole match, the Russian tried at the beginning and then he waited for Riner to attack, so he did absolutely nothing else than trying to counter, almost the whole fight. Finally something happens, and it's not even clean or well done, and worse, the player fail to deliver correctly the technique because he forgot the rule or was in the heat of the fight. At least Riner throws his opponent in the end, the back of Tasoev doesn't fully connect but Riner goes to pin him anyway, and they look so tired.
It wasn't a great fight, but also isn't +100kg category bound to be like that considering the height and the weight of the players?
What was wrong with that match?
@@josephmalone253 Some people (mostly Slav people I guess?) think Tasoev won the fight but the judges robbed him the victory. When Tasoev countered Riner and made him fall, they didn't give the point to Tasoev because of a new rule and people are mad about it.
It's always like that with people, especially on the internet, they think they are right, that in this case the judges, the rules, nothing is more important than what they believe.
I agree 100% , i have been practice judo for almost one year the Teddy fight that was not a throw is just roll over is not a counter as many people are calling ura -nage. But is true rules in judo are a bit confuse. Ura - nage you throw your opponent backwards. Beautiful technique good to counter, defend and attack.
Totally agree about the Olympics! I can respect the idea that it's a world renowned skill level, but everyone gets so concerned about how things look on TV that it kind of messes up the art in my opinion. The same thing seems to be happening with some other new sports in the Olympics.
Example: for skateboarding, when I compare what I see in something like the Vans Park series to what I saw of the skateboarding events in the Olympics, I was not impressed with some 12 year old kid struggling to make a handrail in the Olympics when compared to the insanity of tricks being performed in the Vans Park Series.
And it seems to come down to the 'watch-ability' factor for the average TV consumer. It drives me buggy thinking about it.
🤝 agreed👍 "for the streets" boarding is better than ioc. Every martial art has a sport and fighting version. The problem is when people push sports = fighting. It's not the same and dangerous to suggest so. This is mostly lack of comprehension and speaking skills.
Years ago we were discussing koka juko wazari differences. Civilised fighting will always end in rule-discussions and strategic fighting. The new rule set can be fun, too. Maybe two big problems could be erased, if the first wazari and first shido during regular fighting time are not on the bord. But introduced like: the counting bord is open or penalty bord just opened, to keep it non judoka watcher friendly.
As a practitioner, I don't think the current rule set is anywhere near as fun. It takes some real Stockholm syndrome to think so, IMO. And as a spectator? Man, the old matches are *much* more fun to watch. The current sport-Judo can't be fixed by one or two little changes... just go look at the rule book now, and compare it to the rules of old. I recently read through the 1951 rules; the list of prohibited acts is about one page.
@@yakovdavidovich7943 true and might be. But times change. Fighters are way stronger than in the old days, which itself asks for rule changes to prevent injuries. Kani basami destroyed so many knees... i did not like the actual ruleset at first, too.. but teaching it for a while i realised the positive aspects and started to like it (which totally qualifies for stockholm syndrome) :-) ... sometimes its better to learn to love something, that you cannot change.
@@sebastiamg.1404 it can be changed if enough judokas around the world reject it. The IJF has too much commercial power, and shiai has overtaken judo. It's sad do many people follow the money, and a bunch of us normal people would benefit from someone different.
The whole riner thing isn't about whether Tasoev's technique should have scored, it's about the inconsistency in the rules where rolls like that have scored within the same competition.
I completely agree with this.
Absolutely agree! We need to bring back spirit and technique of judo, excluding only really dangerous ones!
Sadly, without the Olympics Judo becomes a tiny niche sport and the IJF should do all they can to remain an Olympic sport.
What I don't understand is why there isn't Judo competition franchises outside of the Olympics which operate different rules. Take BJJ for example, IBJJF, ADCC and EBI each use different rule sets, different scoring. Judo could do the same thing.
Ammeter (Olympic) boxing is scored completely differently to professional boxing as another example. Freestyle (Olympic) wrestling is a completely different sport to Collegiate wrestling in the USA, yet those wrestlers enter the Olympic program when selected.
Well said Chadi!
Totally agree with you.
Its all about the money!!
Dude, I feel the same way about the rules in BJJ. I'm never going to take a seat on purpose during a fight. On our roll videos, whenever someone does that, I add the "boo, rubbish, slime, filth, muck, boo!" sound byte from The Princess Bride. Shameful.
I love hitting that concept at 4:48 when someone is standing up from the ground while I'm doing the same, using their shoulder to assist my get-up.
Thanks for the great videos, as always!
get over it.
Great idea with the princess bride. You Sir are a legend.
I agree with the concern you addressed. However, It has to have honest mistakes to be found the right answers.
Agree with absolutely every point. This is not the Judo I fell in love with 25 yrs ago, in rules, spirit, mechanics and competition frequency. Great post
Hi Chadi. I agree with most of the points you make in this video. Indeed Judo needs better refereeing. Back in the day I competed, it was hard to score an Ippon. It had to be very clear and contain all three elements of the ippon, undoubtfully. If there was a doubt in judging, it should be scored no more than Wazari. Period. Also, Yuko should come back to the scoreboard. Anyway, IJF should follow the traditional Japanese rules for competition. HOWEVER, I must say, what Tasoev did was clearly a score. You can see that he stops Riner's motion and changes the direction of the movement, throwing Riner and making him roll over the line between his shoulders. That was a clear score for Tasoev, a Wazari! This is the purely technical analysis.
I just spoke with some folks from Judo I know and they explained to me that the rule changed and this kind of move is no longer to be scored... This is a fact, and perhaps Riner even let himself go in throw aware that it would not be scored. But I still stand by the opinion that the rules should be in such a way that this would be scored as Wazari.
Agree with you
@Fernando Henrique dos Santos Riner knows his Judo and the rules. You can clearly see he doesn't look a tad bit worried after Tasoev gets up and start celebrating. Riner even makes a gesture as he gets up like "nope". Riner wouldn't have started a throw he knew could get him to lose control to an accepted counter, especially in a WC finale like that.
I totally agree, the rules need to change as fast as possible. I particularly was thought the leg grabs and leg takedowns, but could never used it. Rarely followed all the events of the year, is just too much. And, despite not liking what judo have became, i watched mainly the Olympics because is when high level judo is, even though the rules always were a issue for me and my friends. Judo got diluted, and the subservience to the Olympics Games reminds me of rugby sevens, like it was design for the Olympics and that's it
O couldn’t agree more. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I agree 100%!
I was taught an ippon throw is one that you couldn't get up from if it was on concrete...the fight would be over...finished.
This like the changes in folk style wrestling that started to happen in the 80's where people start going for points instead of pins. So I feel your frustration where a sport you love changes into something that is not what the original intent was.
Hey Chadi, you really nailed it with the modern day judo rules and chasing .... I just don't understand why JUDO FEDERATION is selling cheap . It fells JUDO is selling off their brand. It's such a shame that there is no more worriors anymore just making celebrities. Salute to Judo worriors
je suis complètement d'accord avec toi
peace! i am 100% agree with you Sir, i don't understand what was the purpose of changing the rules , the Judo was really at his best 20 years ago , with many different declinations at that time it was easy to recognize the Corean Judo (very aerial ) , the Azeri judo (very wrestling and with some direct foot grabbings) and many others it was so rich and there was always new tricks an traps to build over especialy on the ground too (some Judoka were beast on floor fights) now no room for all of these. and we have lost the true spirit of Judo , it was sold for free.
