My two cents : as a judoka and former wrestler (but still train sometimes with wrestlers for randori), I think that the big point with judo is balance. The wrestlers work more on the levels changes and power where judokas work more on the balance and the feet speed since the majority of judo's throws are done with the legs (think o soto gari, uchi mata, o uchi gari, ...) or need the feet speed to turn quickly (like seoi nage, harai goshi, tai otoshi, ...).
Also, the grip point aside, I don't really understand why judo throws would be sunddenly inefficient in mma. It's like for any other combat sport, you have to adapt your style. Boxing guard isn't the same if you're boxing with big gloves or mma gloves. Same for wrestling, we rarely see in the octogon a single leg or double leg like a pure wrestler would do it (meaning the knee drop on the ground). In fact, it looks often more like a morote gari.

I think judo definitely can be used in MMA if one can get their head thinking outside of the normal judo rule sets. Good participants in any sport fight like they train, so changing your mindset is hard. My son has been doing judo since he was seven and recently started competing in intermediate school wrestling. He took third in the championships for his weight class in his first season. He also struggled with the time limits, the speed of wrestling, and the nuances of the rules... but I could tell that he instinctively wanted to use judo when he got frustrated with wrestling techniques. He learned to adopt some throwing techniques without the gi and his control on the ground is definitely judo centric. I don't think it's ironic that there are some BJJ kids wrestling. I see them on the mat practicing BJJ before wrestling practice. It is ironic, however, to see these BJJ kids doing poorly in the championships. I'm not sure why. So, if people are going to wrestling in order to prep for MMA, and my judoka son is doing well in wrestling because of judo, I guess someone can also make the association that judo is good for MMA. Just my two cents...

As far as the BJJ kids go, we had a couple on my wrestling team growing up. Their biggest issue was a lack of strength training. Wrestlers spend a lot of time training to be strong and explosive, and BJJ guys at that level just didn't. They tend to get overwhelmed by a wrestler's aggression and power.

Thanks for another outstanding video ! Just as Kosen Judo is Judo with an emphasis on Newaza there should be Judo dojos which teach No-Gi Judo as part of their training. Of course they would end up calling themselves a new name, like Kosen Judo did, but it would probably just have something to do with the city in which it was taught, again like Kosen Judo did. Judo, true Judo, is like a sponge. Unlike the Gracies, Kano NEVER claimed to have invented all those techniques in his system. He studied many styles of JuJitsu and absorbed the ones he wanted into what started out being called Kano Jujitsu. For example, some of the Atemiwaza of Judo were gleaned from the techniques Gichen Funikoshi brought with him when he taught at the Kodokan. Many don't know that the Kodokan was the first place in Japan that Funikoshi taught OkinawaTe. which became Karate, and later Shotokan Karate as Shoto was the nom de plume of Gichen Funikoshi. So Shotokan Karate translates roughly to "Place for learning the way of Shoto". I believe Judo is a great base from which to learn a variety of martial arts, just as ballet is a great base for learning dance.

Technically, Sambo and Combat Sambo have already done this. But we are not lucky enough to have the abundance of Sambo classes in NA or EU, unfortunately. I've seen about one Combat Sambo club in Montreal, and that's about it. I am currently in Calgary, AB, and I am very saddened that there is none here, it's the perfect all-in-one martial arts for mma. And it's the reason why Fedor and Khabib became great fighters. They were both Combat Sambo champions, which includes many Judo moves integrated. Both Khabib and his successor-to-come Islam Makachev, use leg lock judo throw down techniques, over and over again. You can go check. It's more like Judo and Wrestling combined. However again, I am saddened we don't have Combat Sambo here. In Calgary there is one Judo club which when I went to, the learning process was way too slow, with too much focus on moves that were useless in combat. It was overall very disappointing and it felt like such a waste of potential from a great martial art. Currently back to a club that teaches muay thai, wrestling, and jiu jiutsu. But I really want to learn Judo take downs. Sad world my friends.

Judo is great for mma. I believe don Frye is a 2nd dan when he was fighting. I have Been training and fighting in Muay Thai for years now so my clinch was pretty good when I started adding judo to it it leveled my clinch up. Obviously no hip tosses but my ashi waza and inside thigh throws form belly to belly have gotten pretty much unstoppable. So even judo can be adapted to Muay Thai as well.

One more thing: cage wrestling is its own animal (kabib being the best at it imho) but one of the reasons why folkstyle (traditonal us style) wrestlers do well in mma is because of this one unique aspect:
In Folkstyle dragging/breaking people back down gets you points and so does getting back up. Thats why usually us folkstle wrestlers tend to be great "riders" even in mma.

Yes, and Judo has some wonderful techniques that work really well from the sprawl, but they are no longer practiced so much in Judo. One of these is a Hiki Komi Gaeshi with a crossed arm grabbing your opponents neck and far-side arm, which roles sideways, grabs the inner side of the leg with your free arm, and ends up in a nasty twist and choke. Judo has a good deal of stuff like this that can't be used in tournaments anymore but would come in very handy with a more permissive ruleset.

Without any sprawls I've been able to counter a lot MMA -based wrestling styled shooting for the legs, and I never needed a sprawl to counter them. Just the awareness positioning of Judo works, if you train against those techniques.

Judoka need to practice no-gi judo using (under hooks over hooks etc) to make their techniques work in mma or a gi-less fight. But many wrestlers have taken many arm throws, reaps, sweeps from judo (I believe). So now there are many good wrestlers that have not trained in Judo but have techniques like Judo in their wrestling which almost makes it pointless to train gi Judo if you have a coach that can teach you nogi judo. That is why we see way more wrestlers than judoka in mma and having alot more success too.

That alone in itself can be a very potent combination, the problem as always being that these disciplines generally aren't trained with the same goal and methodology as Muay Thai or submission grappling. judo is a very good base, it takes some tweaking, for example, the grips, I actually don't use the gee often in judo competition, only to bring my opponent to me. the only thing is the sleeve, but that can easily be replaced with a quick wrist grip. it's an art that takes a long long time to learn and it teaches you to throw people in all positions and against people that are masters at not being thrown. that's one thing that I learned from judo, if you try and you are not highly trained, apart from a double leg tackle, you won't get me down.
but I definitely think there are major benefits to judo over wrestling. mostly that with judo, when you throw someone you are thought to go down and get them in a hold imeadelty, either a submission hold or a hold that makes sure you control them. wrestling misses out on that, wrestling just hugs someone and then you hold them weird, but the wrestling holds are by far not as competent as those of judo and BJJ when talking MMA. when you trow someone in judo you imeadely get the chance to throw an arm bar or a choke without having to really break your grip, in a lot of wrestling moves you would have to let go first to get let's say an arm bar or a rear-naked choke.

I imagine the technique would change a little from having to grab the opponents body and arms instead of sleeves and collars and at this point does it just become Greco Roman wrestling but with trips? I am torn between finding a mma school where the wrestling coach has a Greco Roman background or going to a judo school or going to a bjj school I like that bjj does a lot of rolling and wrestling seems like the aggressiveness and pressure is much more real and judo seems to be a good balance between the two right now I do a style of Kung fu and tai chi but we moved out of our building and into a studio with no pads for the foreseeable future so its a lot less sparring and no take downs because no one wants to get thrown onto a wood floor so this is why I figure doing some grappling will help me get some of that higher pressure training and fun fighting that I enjoy back into my training regime

If you know why you're gripping and how to accomlish such, jacket or no jacket then you can do nearly the same thing. Handfighting and kumi kata. If your game is based on those fundamentals then jacket, no jacket, sport, leo, sd, combat you'll see the light. If one is basing skill on specific sequences vs chunking concepts you'll be led down the wrong rabbit hole. If you understand kumi kata and build off that, your learning is scaffolded, if not you build on sand. Holes in your game with no idea how to fill it.

Shooting in wrestling require to change lvl and give the higher ground to your opponent , it's dangerous cause of knees ,sprawls and ground n pound .
A judo based take down game can give you an edge in securing the dominant position and give you good grip over some submissions.
Greco Roman wrestling which doesn't have so much lvl changing is also good for dominating stand up grappling but it has no submissions.
There are three types of distance in fighting , this is what we learned in pankration , striking distance , stand up wrestling and ground fighting those can also be further cut down to categories for example striking distance can be cut down to kicking distance boxing distance and clinch- dirty boxing distance , stand up wrestling can be categorised to limp manipulative throws like kotte gaeshi , foot sweeps like ashi waza and body takedowns , ground fighting can be categorised to pins-positioning, ground n pound and submissions.
Having a good grip at throwing someone is very important in MMA , I have seen fights where the better stand up wrester dominate the fight . Stand up wrestling is the transition between striking and ground fighting it's the middle component , forget about what the Gracie's say about all fights ending to the ground , the Gracie's proved themselves in an era where ground fighting was underestimated all three aspects of fighting are important and when it comes to street fighting and self defence , being able to throw someone to take away his mobility while doing damage is more important and safe than rolling with him on the pavement.

hey man, i have a question.
i've trained in boxing/kickboxing/bjj and i'm pretty good at all 3 of them but my biggest hole in my game is wrestling or takedowns and clinching. so i'm torn between learning wrestling or judo. in the beginning i thought judo was shit and wrestling is superior but after all these Dagestani fighters came into the scene (khabib/zabit/islam/etc..) i noticed that they are much superior takedown artists because they combine wrestling with judo, so i'm thinking about doing judo but i have a couple of questions about it.
    1. the obvious question is am i gonna be allowed to use no gi grips in the judo gym or do i have to use the sleeves and are there techniques that aren't reliant on the gi??
    2. i heard there is a shit ton of belts in judo and the techniques you learn are limeted to your belt level is that true? i don't want not to be tought the good techniques just becuase i don't have enough years under my belt (i prefer the bjj way)
    3. i also heard you only start getting good at judo after you get your black belt which is crazy because in bjj a blue belt is a killer and knows tons of techniques, if that's true I'd rather do wrestling at least i'll not be held back by the belt system
i'd really apreachiate it if you could answer my questions, thanks in advance

  • @objectivistathlete

The idea that you "just" need to learn overhook/underhook in order to adopt Judo to MMA is silly. In a no-gi grappling situation, a wrestler has far more tools than a Judoka in the overhook/underhook, because they've trained that way for years and years. There are all sorts of throws and takedowns available from the overhook and/or underhook that Judo does not have.
I think Judo is a highly valuable martial art for other reasons (#1 being the usefulness of the gi in clothed fighting), but let's be honest, it's not the best for MMA.

I like BJJ for some technical ground game, but the reality is in real combat fighting, its almost not worth it and will not end the fight quickly. In my opinioin, based on my own experience and what I watched, that depends on how you train.
You don't have to rely on the Gi during training. Also you can modify stuff as you need it. If I can grab the gi in my oponents neck I can also grab the neck. If the throw is going backwards for your oponent you can grab the chin instead and as arms aren't straight you don't slip that much, especially if you grab over the joints.
Also, if your school is balanced enough you'll also get a lot of ground techniques that will help.
So even if I would recommend to add something like muay thai for the striking parts, I would absolutely recommend judo as a potential base.
Just don't limit your training to the bounderies of judo when you try to fight outside of them. It's not like the IJF-rules would be the spirit of judo.
Whoops, that was a late reply. But it just popped into my youtube landing page ^^

There is a whole pedagogy behind teaching & learning of throws up to a level where it can be applied with success agains an opponent of similar level in competition. Countries which have done a lot of research in physical education - like Germany - teach it at university level.
