- Takanori Nagase is a Japanese judoka, who competes in -81 kg weight category. He is 2015 World Champion, 2020 Olympic champion and 6-time national champion. He is the first Japanese judoka to win World championships in -81 kg weight category. His main throws are O Soto Gari, Ashi Guruma, Uchi Mata and O Uchi Gari. Despite his top level achievements and excellent technical Judo skills, he doesn't get as much attention as other more athletic judokas in his country or his weight category. Therefore, I feel he is quite underrated.

Great highlights compilation! To be honest, the first time I saw Nagase compete back in 2015 I remember thinking "how can someone this slow win WC?!?!" Then I realized someone like him must have excellent timing, an exquisite sense of his opponent's balance, and great control and "stickiness" with his lifting leg. He also improved tremendously since 2015. Over the years, I've come to appreciate the efficiency and beauty of his technique more, I imagine he has to work extra-hard to overcome his lack of explosiveness and foot speed.

Firste comment for this legendary judoka best of the world ashi waza expert
Considering his uchi mata is the ashi waza variation (like in the nage no kata, rather than the further rotated goshi waza variation), pretty much all his throws are ashi waza. O uchi gari, sasae tsuri komi ashi, o soto gari, ko soto gari, ashi/o guruma. Truly a master of ashi waza, suits his body type (long legs compared to typical judoka).

What happened at 2:30? Did blue gi think the match was over? Why was he walking away, instead of putting up defense?
usually refree stops when the players get up from ne-waza..... but here refree didn't seem to do so... and he took the advantage of that situation

@@user-dn5uu3fe8b In Italy he is definitely appreciated. Both the Japanese clean and ordered style as well as the Georgian messy wrestling-like kind of judo, they are both appreciated here.
In the years when Ono was dominating the -73 and Nagase was dominating the -81, everybody here were waiting to see what magic trick Nagase would pull out next to win again making it look easy, like it's just regular stuff for him.

Nice video but I have seen him close fights against talaented judokas in order to win by penelties. Fair but ugly. The most "european" japanease judoka in the circuit. Not my favorite.
