Rolls was an outstanding Judoka and seemed to have a great spirit and attitude. I believe BJJ would be different if he were still alive 🙏
What do you think would be different, if he was still alive?
@@Jake-df2zj probably BJJ practitioners would be more engaging and aggressive in taking the action to the ground(instead of being led to the ground). Another thing would probably be the exchange(punches and kicks) aspect of fighting being more present in BJJ fighters. His death has probably thrown MMA 20 years back. Our luck was Marco Ruas who was talking about that and became famous after becoming a UFC champion. But since Marco wasn't famous in Japan such developments got delayed, IN MY OPINION. Of course this is just an exercise, specially for those who had some contact with Rolls but no one can be sure.
@@Abaramotorai absolutely nothing would be different in bjj,the popularity of sport bjj rules changed bjj forever toward an almost entirely ground style.Only the gracie university, rickson ,behrings and valente bros are still teaching combat BJJ. Rolls would be just another 70 yr old red belt now,he would have no more influence than Rickson .
@@scarred10 You missed my point entirely. I was talking about the development of BJJ in MMA around 2010ish. That would probably be reached sooner if Rolls was around. Why, you might ask. Bc the idea that BJJ as it was practiced was enough was something Rolls was not selling. For him BJJ (or just Jiujitsu as we call it in Brazil) was punches, kicks, take downs and submissions. I am one that appreciate how open he was as a BJJ master compared to his counterparts in the 90's.
@@Abaramotorai except you mentioned nothing about 2010 in your post,your point is still nonsense.BJJ for vale tudo only worked before there was MMA .Nowadays,you have a striking coach,wrestling coach and ground coach rather than just bjj,it doesnt work in that context anymore.

Few people know or remember, Rolls had an American mother and spent time in the USA. Look up a wrestler named Bob Anderson, the "Americana" was named after him by Rolls,,,,
Chadi Rolls was an avid Freestyle Wrestler who learned I think from an American Wrestling coach named Bob Wall, so Rolls learned Wrestling, Judo plus Sambo outside of Gracie Jiu Jitsu
I asked about Rolls at a Rigan Michado seminar, Rigan told a story about one of Rolls' students who was built like a gorilla bragging about winning a Judo competition. I don't remember the story exactly, but the student bragged about outmuscling all the other competitors and claimed Judo was bullshit. So Rolls' asked him to back up that claim, and ended up throwing him to the ground a 100 times. He obviously respected the art. Rolls was sick. "Rolls is my ROMEBOY" RIP
& this is what made the "champions" of the family: cross-training in other disciplines, to add to their overall grappling game.
Couple that with lots of time to practice (& the money to set that time aside from life's day to day struggles) & you'll have a rounded athlete on your hands.

Rolls was the most open minded Gracie , hé has helped to introduce news technics in to Bjj from judo,sambo even wrestling,. It seems like Carlos Gracie didnt learn all from his master, Gracie jj lacked a lot of technics ,for instance before thé fight between Kimura and Hellio Gracie they didnt not now about ude garami. Without Rolls bjj wont be what it is today. There are so manies Gracies pretending to hold shodan in judo but none of them are good as Rolls was.
True. It's odd that didn't know about the Ude Garami (taugh ti them by a wrestler) or the Gyaku Ude Garami (they learned it after Kimura).
It really weirds me out as they specialized on ground techniques, so why didn't they learn those techniques. It would be ok if they didn't know about something like the Tomoe Nage but...

But wasnt ude garami part of judo or jiu jitsu? Its like a basic technic? DId kano kick it out from the jiu jitsu curriculum? Or how comes, it wasnt part of what the gracies learned?

Rolls Gracie is an innovator in his own right🙏🤼🥋He integrated and incorporated Judo, Sambo, and Wrestling principles before the mainstream would ever know the value of doing such (with the Russians being the execption, since Sambo is an amalgamation of their various native wrestling arts and Judo).
He is truly one of Grappling's Renaissance Man💪👍Oss🙏

I watched a documentary of Rolls life story and admired his sense of adventure and willingness to learn from other arts. He was an amazing individual. So sad he's not around today to enjoy the fruits of his family's endeavors. May He Rest In Power. 🇧🇷

Very effective and efficient fighting when judo skills are allowed to come into Jiu-jitsu after all Jiu-jitsu is only old school judo techniques from the old judo katers ie judo syllabus the to different styles will eventually become so entwined and excepted and become very popular and effective at the moment is not quite excepted how intwined both arts are.

@@nicocontreras5366 treinei BJJ em 95 e comprava várias revista ,Tatame e Gracie Magazine e lia muito sobre a história e o Rolls foi considerado o melhor de todos e pelo fato de ter morado nos EUA treinou luta que não existia aqui no Brasil que foi Westreling e Sambo aí adaptou ao Jiu-jitsu

Você está pensando em Bob Anderson, que Rolls conheceu quando Bob visitou o Brasil. Bob era um lutador campeão olímpico, e Rolls o derrotou em um "roll" (chamamos isso de roll em inglês)

I trained with a brown belt from George Yoshidas school in Manhattan. George Yoshida was one of Kanos Black belts. He taught us Osoto Geri with a sweep that came down like a back kick from a high knee position coming across the mid to high area of the back of the calf. The judoka in this video uses a stiff legged swing. Is the way I was taught called something else, or it's just a different way of doing it with the same name?
Rolls did not mount the way you showed. He faked the step over mount then switched his base to slide the knee over to mount. Beautiful transition.

I love it this shows just effective Judo is from the stand up to the NeWaza it also shows how the bjj only grappler was always behind and trying to catch up or escape and if he got up he was taken down again by he trained Judoka. today's only bjj grapplers are really know half a martail art because the Gracie's of today don't know and won't cross train Judo

grabbing the legs should also be legal as a counter, imagine countering an uchimata or an ura nage (I am not sure if that's name of front facing uchi mata, that throw where you place your knee between their legs and turn around) by back stepping and picking up the leg

I think Rickson has a Judo black belt as well. Rolls trained in Sambo and wrestling too. What a lot of people failed to grasp is BJJ practitioners have no issue dabbling and using techniques from other styles. Its becoming even more common today for them to cross train. Which is why I laugh at the idea that they dont know takedowns.
I'm brazilian and trained jiu jitsu. I can say to you, BJJ is just Judo for street fight. The BUDO spirit was lost and JUDO today is only a sport. A pitty...

The Gracie’s originally learned Judo from a Judo black belt that was promoted by Kano.
What they do is their interpretation and evolution of the Judo that they learned.

Rolls was a free spirit he was not stuck in to Gracie's dogma ,exactly like his big brother Carlson was. I think Rickson and some few hold a black belt in judo but they suck. Rolls was a legit judoka from all of them even todays.

Judo evolved into throws.
BJJ evolved into ground Judo: pins, submissions.
The first UFCs shows the deficiencies of each of the Martial branches.
BJJ itself shows a deficiency in its own lineage, in a very very short time, in just 1 generation.
The first UFC fighter that inspired me was Marco Ruas, truly the first modern MMA fighter, from the lineage of Vale Tudo.
I have to give credit where credit is due. BJJ brings back Judo, and old school catch wrestling that people forgot.

Rolls was the most important person in the family in terms of the advancement of BJJ after Carlos and Helio
Neither carlos nor helio advanced it at all,they learned basic judo and then adopted the ground and guard strategy for vale tudo.Rolls and Carlson snr were the pioneers and then the ibjjf comps drove the evolution much faster.

@@graciescottsdale I think I was talking about the Helio side of the family even though Rolls was Carlos's son adopted/given to Helio.in terms of total importance Carlos saved and held high the Gracie name for 3 decades and also pioneered the more powereful and athletic training incorporating group training with killers. Rolls role can not be underestimated though as he introduced wrestling in Brazil and in bjj as well as sambo techniques which was a huge imporovement from just Judo throws
@@scarred10 I could not agree more, Carlos and Helio because they sucked at takedowns compared to the Japanese their biggest contribution is that they focused on Newaza and when the Japanese dropped the ground fighting they kept it alive despite not innovating anything
Rolls and Carlson are the one who puts bjj to the next level , they developed the sport aspect.
IDK about Carlos' side of the family. But as I recall, Helio's sons had black belts in Judo but didnt talk much about it. Their students, practically family, like Fabio Santos were also good judokas aside from BJJ masters.
