Something I've always wondered about the mama Direwolf scene: did Jon spot Ghost earlier, and did he thus essentially trick Ned into taking in the pups, or did someone (Bloodraven) make him "hear" Ghost? Ned allows the kids to take the wolves after Jon does his "you've got 5 kids, there are 5 pups" thing, and everyone is impressed that he left himself out. Then a page later Jon suddenly hears something that no one else hears, goes back and finds Ghost, so now he has a puppy as well. Only... Ghost is mute. So what on earth did Jon hear? Bran specifically says he can hear the wind, the horses and the other pups, so it doesn't sound like Ghost was making rustling noises or something like that... So was Jon's earlier emotional spiel a mummer's farce, or did Bloodraven go "Crap, he didn't find his wolf! Quick, lure him back!"
I saw a theory on this a while ago, forgot where, but basically it was since Jon and Ghost are so emotionally and spiritually connected, he could hear him in his minds eye. He was the only who heard him because he and Ghost and essentially one in the same
GRRM has said that the first chapter he wrote was the Bran chapter where they find the dire wolf pups so I think it must be important and has an influence on the story. Great work as always, thank you.

@Graig Simmonette how about just accepting the fact that it would be logistically impossible to perfectly adapt this book series because it would be way too expensive and take about 20 seasons? I always thought that Ludwyn and Cat worked together to send Jon away. As long as Ned was in winterfell, Jon wouldn't leave. Cat said herself "many time I asking him to send the boy away, he wouldn't do it." the Only way to get rid of Jon, was to Ned going to King's Landing
Big E Having Jon join the Night's Watch so he could never father legitimate children was a big win for Cat especially if she was aware of Ned's dream for Spring.
Love all of your material PJ, but i have to say: you've overthought things a bit when it comes to "how did Gared the deserter get south of the Wall?" If he's a deserter, then he's a member of the Night's Watch. Brothers of the NW don't have to worry about going over/through the Wall, as they reside in castles south of the Wall, with tunnels/gates leading to the north side for ranging. After he escaped the White Walkers he would simply pass through a gate (maybe Castle Black), and from there simply leave the castle and head south - only to be found by Stark men.
I'm struggling to come up with a theory as to why Direwolves disappeared south of the Wall in the Old King's reign. What is clear is #AlysanneIsToBlame - after all, she did really change a lot in the North (and I can't see her hubby-bro's Kingsroad being to blame). I'm thinking that closing the Nightfort and opening of Deep Lake blocked their way through the Wall. Or perhaps they went through the Snowgate? Either way, Aly's alterations at the Wall stopped the population to the south of it getting replenished by the larger number to the north, and so they died out.
Si Hollett it’s possible that with the abolition of the right to first night, other lords took offence and partly blamed the Starks and killed the dire wolves in revenge?? Perhaps?
I don't think Ghost is brainwashing Jon, but you have convinced me he's influencing me. In my mind the wolves are more like close friends, but also expressions of the deepest desires of the Stark kids. Too tired/drunk to go into it much now, I'll write an essay in the morning if this gets a single like.
Dude. I haven't sweated the premier of something that wasnt a movie, TV show, or album before. Thank you for just giving a couple hours motice instead of days.. I'm sure YT gives an incentive for using the feature (or so many creators wouldn't use it for no reason, right?) So get yours, but this is a good balance.
Jon befriending Sam makes sense because they're both outcasts who get bullied in the training yard, which reminds Jon of Tyrion whom he bonded with due to their shared outcast status. Jon thinking about Sam when he sees Ghost makes sense because Ghost is his friend, so that triggers him to think of his other friend.
Your videos and other asoiaf you tubers inspired me to get the books and start reading. The only downside is I don’t want to watch any of your videos anymore because I’m only half way through the books.
Not sure why you can't see a certain amount of bravery in someone having the insight to admit their own character flaw. This world is filled with people who lie to themselves rather than face unfortunate truths
@@rhaenyrareigns2200 admitting it is only superfluous if you do nothing about it. Sam has internalized her cowardice and hasn't tried to grow or change in YEARS.
There is one more possibility for Garet's method of going south of the wall though Running back to his castle and reporting the situation like a normal ranging, but then riding off while everyone else was busy Now that I think about it, this probably explains how Ned was informed of his desertion - via raven from his sworn brothers once they noticed him missing
You know, I feel like it would actually be quite possible for a direwolf to go through Gorne’s Way. It’s supposed to be a bit of a labyrinth that wildlings get lost and die in, but with a direwolf’s sense of smell they could probably find the way. Like Gandalf following his nose in the Mines of Moria. Though there still remains the problem of a direwolf willingly going underground in the first place.
Why is that? The search for truth is behind any conspiracy theory. Why would that be a bad thing in real life but good thing in fiction? Effectively you are saying you'd much rather be lied to and never know than live in a truthful society without a need for such search. Think how jarring it would be to go online one day to find out that people apparently don't have a shred of critical thought in their heads and everyone agrees about everything they're being told. Wouldn't you start thinking it was weird and suspicious? And wouldn't you then be a conspiracy theorist? I guess the point I'm trying to make is that conspiracy theories are a proof of critical thinking in larger scale and should be encouraged, not berated, no matter how ridiculous the subject matter of said theories might seem to any person or group.
@@k0rppi259 Well said. And many "conspiracy theories" aren't necessarily "theories" at all, just conspiracies. The latter of those two words has more and more become associated only with the first, and cannot truly exist on its own. People don't like to believe they're not in the loop of everything that happens within their lives or their world. It's hard for them to comprehend that institutions such as governments, or industries, may keep small *or* large things from them. They're accountable to us, right? We elect and hire them? The human ego is immense, and it's often very true that, the more you know, the "crazier" you appear. Can't deny how sweet it would be to live in a world where "conspiracy theories" only exist in literature or film, so I get it 😑
CheeseballQuartet It's frustrating how little we know of Gared's movements. As is our ignorance of what Gared told Ned during his rather brief interrogation. Did Gared even see the White Walkers?
@@alanpennie8013 I am pretty sure he did see the Others. He was the one watching in the trees, right? The POV guy. I honestly don't remember if it was him or the other ranger that wasn't Royce. I don't think he could go back to Castle Black without explaining what happened. It would be hard to escape after that anyway. The Watch would pursue him and it seems like he never informed the Watch about the Others either. I know the Watch is skeptical, but it seems experienced rangers like Benjen and Qhorin would believe it.
@@dirrdevil The problem is that the scene in the book is quite different from the one in the TV adaptation which leads to more confusion about the encounter. In the book, following Will's preliminary reconnaissance he and Ser Waymar walked up a low wooded hill to investigate the wildlings camp. Gared was left behind with the horses so it's hard to know what he was able to see. In the show all three investigated and were ambushed and it was Will who survived rather than Gared.
I remember watching the series for the first time (not a book reader) and asking myself how did that Night's Watch man reach Winterfell without being arrested at the Wall, as well for the Dire wolf? And also how did a faceless man got arrested in the first place? That's how I found Preston Jacobs whose analyses are truly brilliant and portray books in much complex way than the show does. Again, not a book reader but from watching Preston's work I myself see it as an abomination and completely understand why the readers are angry as hell.
You should watch some stuff from *The Dragon Demands* channel. He pretty much explores why D&D run the show into the mud. It is quite heartbreaking, especially knowing that they are in charge of some of upcoming Star Wars content.
The problem with having a warg move the direwolf is that the warg would also need to cross the Wall. Warging doesn't work through the wall (perhaps for powerful greenseers through the weirwoods?)
Sandman730 true, I don't want to discount my point just yet though. I know for a fact that the others were able to resurrect and control wights. (The one that attacked mormont.) If the others magic can work then I would assume wargs could work as well. When Jon couldn't feel ghost it was right after he traveled OVER the wall right?
I like how Cat says you knew the man that was a long time ago but doesn't apply this same logic to little finger and just assumes they can trust him especially when if she's wrong the decision could have equally dyer consequences.
Oh my Chad Summerchild, what do you know of premieres? Premieres are for the winter, when snows fall a hundred feet deep. Premiers are for the long night, when the sun hides its face for years at a time, and children are born and love and die, all in darkness.
Thanks Preston! Always wondered about the "coincidence" of the dire wolves matching the stark children. So whoever sent Ghost must have had an agenda for the other children too?
It would mean that Sansa got away and possibly Rickon being under the biggest influence of his wolf serving as the best piece...? Lets remember that Robb pretty much died, because he refused to listen to his pet...
I disagree with the bit about how Catelyn refused to let Jon sit with his siblings to avoid offending the royal family because of the sign of the direwolf. Catelyn already hated Jon and would have used any excuse to not let him sit with her family. And the thing about seating bastards next to high lords/ladies in general and royals in particular came up later too, when Oberyn brought Ellaria Sand to Joffrey's wedding. From Tyrion V, A Storm of Swords: "Tyrion swallowed a groan. His paramour, and bastard-born, Cersei will pitch a holy fit if he wants her at the wedding. If she consigned the woman to some dark corner below the salt, his sister would risk the Red Viper's wrath. Seat her beside him at the high table, and every other lady on the dais was like to take offense. Did Prince Doran mean to provoke a quarrel?" So this is a cultural thing in Westeros, not caused by Catelyn's fear of the omen of the dead direwolf.
Indeed, I wanted to point this out but you did it perfectly. IT IS a thing, that worked along Cat's dislike for Jon, and I guess it could be say that she truly (and with some personal benefit) didn't want to offend the King's family for 2 reasons, common courtesy and conveniently again with her personal motive in this prophecy. If we asume this is true of course.
Couldn't the direwolves and Gared technically have just crossed over the bridge of skulls? Granted, it's weird that if Gared came from so far west that he would travel anywhere near winterfell when fleeing south so that seems unlikely. But it could be a possibility for the direwolf mother - particularly if we assume that she was sent to them, not that she was just fleeing south.
0:59 and who they are! 3:42 : "sending a pregnant direwolf wouldn't really be that difficult" and peforming telepathic ultrasound? sure! come on. but, someone who is able to skinchange could probably also skinchange into the fetuses ... so yeah, why not.
If you can skinchange into fetuses then fetuses can carry consciousnesses then abortion is definitely murder. Quick find out if GRRM is pro life or pro choice. This will figure greatly in The War of the Raven Part 4 /s
I feel like you're implying that BR knew exactly what would happen everytime he tried to manipulate the chracters, but it seems more complicated than that. The dead direwolf, for example, would make a lot more of sense for a warning for Ned Stark NOT to go to KL, rather than the opposite. I do agree with the BR idea, i just dont think it is possible for him to have antecipated every decision those characters would do in asoiaf.
I remember cat being happy jon was gone and george talked about cats worries not being jon but his decendents challenging hers as he is a bastard but his kids if highborn would be highborn bastards and thier kids woild be high born and able to claim winterfell. Same as cersie. Has worries that are far from the present and paid for it
Another option is that the direwolf could have crossed the Bridge of Skulls next to the Shadow Tower. Same for Gared during Bran's first chapter as we don't know where he was actually captured. As for Jon befriending Sam, it's important to note how young Jon is. Being brave by admitting cowardice sounds like teenager logic to me, and Jon is not the deepest thinker. I read Jon's motivation as seeing Sam as a kid and another outsider who didn't deserve the harsh treatment he was receiving. Jon being the paragon-type character he is, and perhaps a bit entitled as well, stood up for Sam thinking the repercussions wouldn't fall so badly onto him. Details, I know, and they don't affect your overall thesis. Perhaps Ghost is Jon's conscience in the story - reminding him what the "right" thing to do is. Anyway, looking forward to Part 3.
The direwolf could have come from Brandons Gift it is pretty much deserted and like Chernobyl with the abandonment of it by people. There would be an over growth of plant and animal life so a direwolf population could survive easily in that environment.
Are you planning to expand Dragon Genes videos based on Fire & Blood? I think our dragon hatchers are - Visenya - Rhaenys (d) of Aenys - Daenerys I - Rhaenyra - One of the twins of Daemon - and Daena the Defiant?
It makes sense that Cat put Jon at the back of the feast as to not insult the royal family seeing as thats fairly normal behavior across westeros but I had always assumed that Jon wasn't directly told this and just assumed that's why he was hidden from the baratheons when in actuality it was Ned just trying to keep Jon as far from Robert as possible because of yknow R+L=J shenanigans
This is hindsight, but Catelyn misinterpreted the signs, she encouraged Ned to go south when she should of told him to stay in the North. She wanted to avoid conflict, but the attempt on Bran's life causes her to arrest Tyrion setting off the war. Essentially Catelyn thinks she knows better but that often proves wrong, well except concerning sending Theon to the Iron Islands.
@@alanpennie8013 Actually, it hadn't occurred to me, but now... Do you think George RRRRRR... Orwell might sell more books? More importantly, would it be easier to sell my as yet unwritten fantasy-sci-fi-alt-history-political-fable (which will bust all of those genres, plus others yet to be specified) to HBO? I would fight my noble urges to extreme modesty, if it allowed me to better connect with my future fans!
hm....is ghost an isolated phenomenon, b/c bloodraven/weirwood.net, or are the other wolfs also in on the thing with/against/for their respective stark sibling? or is ghost only leading jon with his wolfishness, like it seems to be the case with nymeria, greywind, shaggydog? interesting.
Good question. I have to wonder... if they _are_ steering the other children as well, does that mean that Grey Wind steered Robb into his (and Grey Wind's own!) death for some kind of higher end? Or was the Red Wedding an unforseen circumstance for Grey Wind (or whoever is behind him) that put his plans for Robb to an unexpected premature end?
@@tarvoc746 Grey Wind did not want to attend the Red Wedding, he attacked one of the Freys (Black Walder I think) at the gates, shocking Robb who ordered him locked up. So I guess he had some premonition that he didn't want to come true.
Rickon is definitely under the biggest influence, being the youngest and not able to control his pup while Robb as the oldest with most developed "brain" / "mind" shrugged off his wolf's influence almost completely. There's clearly some telepathic connection running two-ways here, but it seems that only Ghost's link is being used in most significant way by someone.
He answered that in the live chat. Pretty much he is less of a believer in his statement that all prophecy is fake and more inclining to believe in time traveling Bran influencing everything.
The mother wolf could have walked around the Shadow Tower. Mance told Jon that his host could have bypassed the wall that way if he was comfortable with high casualties.
Hey this is Preston, never accept a simple explanation when you can read an extravagant theory into anything. Preston's razor is the complete opposite to occam's razor.
@@davidjones272 Bevcause GRRM is very straightforward in his stories and there is nothing left to speculation clearly designed by a crafty mind, of course not!!!
Never remembered how unrealistic Cat was here. Why even fear Robert? He has no Dragons, so Moat Caylin should be more than enough to defend the North. But who could predict what Cat would interpret into a Direwolf choking on an antler? I'd interpret it as a warning against getting closer to the Baratheons, because they will "choke" the Starks.
That's what I recall as well. It seemed so obvious that she had it backwards and it was a warning to stay away from Baratheons , especially given that she ought to know about the Stark's history going to King's Landing.
The whole time I was reading that book (between the times I threw it across the room for all the times it angered me), I kept going back to my very first reaction to Robert's offering Ned the position of Hand: "I shall be pleased to serve as Hand to the King who claimed the Iron Throne from mad old Aerys. Until that man returns, I am left with no choice but to see to the North, and the Wall, and hope he may present himself to me someday."
@@largefinger2838 It's not easy to make sense of Cat's reasoning in these early chapters. Sansa's betrothal to Joffrey surely involved sending her at least to the snakepit of King's Landing.
I think the Dire wolves are the Starks resurrected after death. Sounds mad but the Starks' discovery of them was the very first thing GRRM thought was a good idea for the books. It adds up if you think about how the Dire wolves always seem to know what is going to happen to their soul mate.

I consider it a separate entity since most of my fav characters- Darkstar, Arienne Martell, Ser Harras Harlaw(not sure why since he doesn't say much, guess it's the name and his VS sword Nightfall), Rodrik the Reader, Asha(not buying the Yara who has a completely different personality and couldn't even have her name), Aegon VI.. at least I got Arya :) in the show.
@Graig Simmonette how about just accepting the fact that it would be logistically impossible to perfectly adapt this book series because it would be way too expensive and take about 20 seasons? Seems to me that a sensible and classy thing to do would be to be grateful for the existence of an alternate interpretation of a favourite work and appreciate it for what it is: one of the greatest TV shows of all time and a decent, if greatly edited adaptation of a great story.

That was an amazing video, Preston. Thanks
seriously I hate finishing a video of yours without the next one being out! Its horrible.
Poor jon cant even trust his pet wolf lol....sigh
Loving this series so far.
Nights Watch videos definitely have the best music. Always listen to at least 2/3 times.
Really interested to see part 3. So far I can't say I'm very convinced. It seems really circumstantial.
I never even read anything with this thought pattern.. applying this logic makes things make way more sense now..
Big E
Having Jon join the Night's Watch so he could never father legitimate children was a big win for Cat especially if she was aware of Ned's dream for Spring.
Awwww, you got my hopes up man, my heart skipped a beat but was then utterly crushed by disappointment :(
Love all of your material PJ, but i have to say: you've overthought things a bit when it comes to "how did Gared the deserter get south of the Wall?"
If he's a deserter, then he's a member of the Night's Watch.
You’ve honoured us with another video Preston. It’s 8am in Australia and waking to this video is a wonderful surprise. Thankyou P man.

I’m 29. I’ll have an AARP card before spring 🙄
Perhaps?
@@jscott7777 Maybe. Again, Alysanne is blame...
It got three.

Dude I love your work. I look forward to it. Keep it up.
Jon befriending Sam makes sense because they're both outcasts who get bullied in the training yard, which reminds Jon of Tyrion whom he bonded with due to their shared outcast status.
Jon thinking about Sam when he sees Ghost makes sense because Ghost is his friend, so that triggers him to think of his other friend.
somehow all I can think about is a Game Of Thrones Season 7 Scene, where a Direwolf climbs the Wall on his own... thanks for that image, Preston...

Not sure why you can't see a certain amount of bravery in someone having the insight to admit their own character flaw. This world is filled with people who lie to themselves rather than face unfortunate truths
It somehow reminds me of alcoholics during A.A. meetings admitting publicly (and most importantly to themselves) that they in fact are addicted.

Awkward...
The direwolf mother went across the bridge of skulls and went past the shadow tower and through the mountains towards winterfell
There is one more possibility for Garet's method of going south of the wall though
Running back to his castle and reporting the situation like a normal ranging, but then riding off while everyone else was busy
Now that I think about it, this probably explains how Ned was informed of his desertion - via raven from his sworn brothers once they noticed him missing
garet was completely traumatized to the point of not being afraid of death, and he was captured near a holdfast i believe
Though there still remains the problem of a direwolf willingly going underground in the first place.
wolves give birth underground, it went in the caves to prepare a place to give birth but found new and interesting smells to follow
Lol did Gandalf really sniff his way out of Moria, like a little naked mole rat? 😅

Conspiracy Theories are much fun as long as they stay in the fictional world xD
Can't deny how sweet it would be to live in a world where "conspiracy theories" only exist in literature or film, so I get it 😑
The former of the first*, I should say. Conspiracy - Theory.
ok but Gared could have just gone through the gate at Castle Black and then deserted after that
CheeseballQuartet
It's frustrating how little we know of Gared's movements.
@@dirrdevil
The problem is that the scene in the book is quite different from the one in the TV adaptation which leads to more confusion about the
encounter.
It's cool to listen some Jon theories other than him being saviour of the world.
Would be fun if he turned out to be its doom.
The problem with having a warg move the direwolf is that the warg would also need to cross the Wall. Warging doesn't work through the wall (perhaps for powerful greenseers through the weirwoods?)
We don't know that for sure. I think the magic prevents you from going over the wall.
@@youngspooks Jon can't sense Ghost on the other side of the wall. Other wargs can't send their animals across the wall.
@@youngspooks
Could also play into Preston's theory that there are wargs / telepathic influencers on both sides of the Wall switching pawns.

From Tyrion V, A Storm of Swords:
"Tyrion swallowed a groan. Did Prince Doran mean to provoke a quarrel?"
So this is a cultural thing in Westeros, not caused by Catelyn's fear of the omen of the dead direwolf.
Do you think Sam is inherently important in some way? Or is he just a cog in the machine to move Jon around?
Didn't Sam play a crucial role in getting Brandon through the wall?
A dream for spring is a long term goal, set aside for when the good times return. Wonder what that means for the book "A dream *of* Spring*.
OMG THIS NOTIFICATION WARMED MY HEART, PRESTON
Awesome video brother. Keep em comin.

3:42 : "sending a pregnant direwolf wouldn't really be that difficult" and peforming telepathic ultrasound? sure! come on.

@@vy1585 hopefully :)
actually this is the perfect question to ask george about :D! i hope i will one day get the chance.
PRESTON KING
I remember cat being happy jon was gone and george talked about cats worries not being jon but his decendents challenging hers as he is a bastard but his kids if highborn would be highborn bastards and thier kids woild be high born and able to claim winterfell. Same as cersie. Has worries that are far from the present and paid for it
Maybe the deserted went back to castle black and deserted after that? That was always my explanation why he made it south of the wall.
I think our dragon hatchers are
- Visenya
- Rhaenys (d) of Aenys
- Daenerys I
- Rhaenyra
- One of the twins of Daemon
- and Daena the Defiant?
It makes sense that Cat put Jon at the back of the feast as to not insult the royal family seeing as thats fairly normal behavior across westeros but I had always assumed that Jon wasn't directly told this and just assumed that's why he was hidden from the baratheons when in actuality it was Ned just trying to keep Jon as far from Robert as possible because of yknow R+L=J shenanigans
I think you should consider that someone might have stabbed the direwolf with a stag antler in a sacrifice type of deal.
Mike Vett ooh great point
This is hindsight, but Catelyn misinterpreted the signs, she encouraged Ned to go south when she should of told him to stay in the North. She wanted to avoid conflict, but the attempt on Bran's life causes her to arrest Tyrion setting off the war. Essentially Catelyn thinks she knows better but that often proves wrong, well except concerning sending Theon to the Iron Islands.
Please don't use premier. It gets my hopes up so high only to tear them down
Its Preston Sensei's lesson. Hope on, hope off.

In the halfhand chapters in book two..does anyone else get the impression the halfhand is looking for visions in the fire he makes after jons dream
7:21 "We were closer than brothers."
Does that mean Robert and Ned had an intense sexual relationship?
hm....is ghost an isolated phenomenon, b/c bloodraven/weirwood.net, or are the other wolfs also in on the thing with/against/for their respective stark sibling?
or is ghost only leading jon with his wolfishness, like it seems to be the case with nymeria, greywind, shaggydog?
interesting.
Hey Preston, is there any old theories in the past that you would want to redo?
He answered that in the live chat. Pretty much he is less of a believer in his statement that all prophecy is fake and more inclining to believe in time traveling Bran influencing everything.
Do you ever DM for dungeons and dragons?
@@largefinger2838
It's not easy to make sense of Cat's reasoning in these early chapters.
So are we getting Jeor Mormont's raven in this series?
@09:26 Wasn't Cat assuming that she and most of her children would go with Ned until Ned told her otherwise?
Jon isn’t drunk when he announces his desertion in ADWD. Everyone starts getting drunk after, but he leaves.
