Box # 139

Rudy thanks for buying my product. Keep making awesome videos. For everyone concerned and talking trash...I sold because I wanted to turn it into some legacy staples I'm able to get on the cheap. I own a small business, and time is money, hence why I was willing to take a larger hit, about 28% to Rudy on my sealed product, which is not much more than the 18-25% you'd lose selling stuff individually on TCG player with way more time invested. I understand buy and hold very well, this is just for fun, it's ultimately not a real investment strategy for my future.
Jade Jenny what did you pay for each box ? We all want to know
Well as along as Rudy +Alpha Investments doesn't care, Rudy feel free to take it down if you want. I paid the following...
Avacyn - $163.35
BFZ - $110.99
Conspiracy: Take the Crown - $63.95
Conspiracy - $89.37
Dark Ascension - $103.46
Dragon's - $85.19
Eldritch - $68.98
Fallen Empires - $109.25
Fate Reforged - $76.34
From the Vault - $35.11
Gatecrash - $53.44
Innistrad - $272.82
Khans - $99.26
M14 - $86.21
Oath - $78.57
Origins - $91.40
Planechase - $92.57
Return to Ravnica - $84.41
Shadows - $69.30
That should about cover it. Those are average prices, a few boxes here and there, maybe 6 total from my LGS that skew the average prices a bit.
+srdalgic not really sure what you're asking, doesn't make sense.
The above prices were my average price for each item. Rudy paid me approximately 70% of my cost to purchase everything, that includes shipping.
he paid, so its his buy in price. i think rudy payed one big price which would make it impossible to nail down the price for each box and set.
Jade Jenny No harm or loveloss imo for pursuing what makes you happy, even if on the surface the logic behind the decision isn't obvious to everyone. Good luck on the new direction
If i Had so many booster boxes I would come home one day, drunk out of my mind and open them giggling in childish joy falling asleep on a bed of magic cards
That sounds awesome and sad at the same time
I dream of the day I have that many booster boxes.
I'm certain the existential dread of organizing and categorizing those cards will be acute.
That sounds a lot of fun 👀😀
@@seekethtruth So much this. I have boxes that I could crack but I don’t because I don’t want to organize them. I already have 20 4K count boxes with sets back to revised.
Look at this amazing packaging..
*boxes crashing heavily onto floor intensifies*
"What great packaging!"
*continues throwing everything onto the ground*
Weird right 🥸
I don't know anything about investing, so I have nothing relevant to add. Other than the fact that I want to open all the boxes. All of them!
Same, with the difference that I dont even know anything about magic...
GamePlayHD Dude try it out it's amazing. A bit expensive, but incredibly enjoyable
OrganicFlu A bit. I think the average magic player spends $40000 in their lifetime
How about we split them?
@@epiphanyunleashed7341 why not just use a printer and print and cut the cards out instead? Just glue them to playing cards if the game is fun
You may fool the others, but you're not fooling me, Rudy. You again aren't wearing any pants in this video.
He never fooled anyone, he openly admitted it. And if you would be a truthful person, you admit right here and now, that you didn't wear a pant as well as you were typing your comment!
I am not wearing any pants writing this comment either.
Sheepy007 Me too
We should find someone good at making clothes design/produce Rudy some Floppy Taco print Yoga Pants.

I'm watching this in July 2021... Turns out he didn't need to wait 7 to 10 years. I can only imagine if he just held on just a little longer. I hope he grew his money that he got from this sale.
im new to magic, care to explain?

As someone who never could afford actual magic cards as a kid this makes me very jealous of having all those cards to be able to make some Decks.
you can always get back into magic. you dont need to spend an arm and a leg.
This is what I like about your channel.
You tell it as it is. No sugar coating. No telling everyone to invest in magic unless they have a secure investment and alot of extra capital to tie down.
again, great video and keep it going.
kinda ironic listening to you saying how good of a packing it was, for you to 2 seconds later throwing the packs on the ground lmao.

Well Ceepy Rudy, thanks for taking the time to share this with us. It seems that some people begin investing and do not realize the risk or the time that must be put in to invest in this game that we all love.
Love going back and hearing what the prices on these were at the time. Interesting to see what's stayed flat and what's gone way up.
Looks like he had the right idea in product diversification, but sometimes shit happens. Hopefully things work out for the guy.,
How is that "product diversification" if all he invested in was WotC product, all with a long time frame and a substantial risk if it ever goes up? What if he needs money? No short term assets in here. What if WotC reprints the living shit out of the game? No non-WotC products here.
You are making the same mistake as the dude ho had to sell. You think you spread the risk, while actually you are all-in on one product category. This dude wasn't financially stable, but though he should invest in long term stuff. That's just a disaster.
Don't worry guys, that makes up about 5% of my investment portfolio, I wanted to purchase another expensive MTG product and wasn't going to dip into the other 95% of my more liquid assets.
Jade Jenny have you by chance mentioned the price the product was purchased for original? were you paying 80 a box or 100+? just curious on how much you were able to pay..
Everything was bought in the lat 20 months or so, when I got back into MTG. So for instance the Innistrad box was $270. About 20 of the boxes I got for around $63 on special sales. Very little was bought at my LGS because they charge $118 a box. Most boxes were in the $70-90 range. From The Vaults were all under $40.
Well I was referring strictly to mtg investments simply because this is a channel about investing into mtg and other tcgs. And I am making no mistake because I am investing no money into mtg.
That box is used for shipping fish. The styrofoam is lined with a plastic bag, then the fish and lots of ice are packed in. A styrofoam lid is put on, then the cardboard box is sealed. I worked at a fish market all 4 years I was in college.
Darmath I wasn't aware of that.
I don't know what to do with this information
Also used for raw dog food too!
Cards probably smell like fish too XD
Lol I worked in an aquarium and that’s how we got shipments of saltwater fish
Very valuable lesson, Rudy. I was curious about the investing, but after remembering the previous video you recorded where you set the realistic bar for point of entry into MTG Investing; I thought I'll just stay a competitive player.
Watching this in 2021 hurts. This man could have waited 2-3 years and made out like a bandit if he wasn't over paying. Patience is a virtue and not everyone can wait I guess.
Also you have to pick and choose your products not all boxes are created equal I tend to avoid the lottery boxes and anything after amonkhet.
Agreed buying sealed product to a popular game is a good idea. In fact I think in five more years the boxes would be over a grand or two. if he could wait it out.
What people like you not understand is opportunity cost. If he put the money he got from the sale in ETH he would have 40x'd. Last 2/3 years there were wayyyyyyyy better investments than a x3 from illiquid boxes.
He could be doing better on the things he pivoted into. An above post says he got into some legacy reserved list type stuff, so even taking a minimal loss could have positioned him into making a great move with 2-3 years of growth on it. Sometimes you take an L to get a bigger W
I don't know anything about Magic somehow found this interesting.
TheRageFiend dead ass. No idea what's happening but i looks cool
TheRageFiend same here bud but , I’m a geek and like all things nerdy lol

Great Video. What do you recommend for buying at the moment due to an investment on a time horizon of several years? Especially in the field of actual diyplay boxes or other compilations since they are cheaper to get than old stuff?
Best greetings from Germany to you and the other guys! You are a great team!
With this video and Jade comments ( I am glad you were not too damaged about your initial investment ) , all the "investors" are receiving a free lesson that would cost a $$$$ course. Hands down. Probably one of your best videos post-floppy taco era.
Rudy, could we please get a video that encapsulates your 4+ year old sealed box collection buys?
I think they are super fun to see how much value they have accrued over the years!
ya he spent all that time packaging all those boxes properly, just so you could throw them all down on the table... man ...
I don’t know a damn thing about magic cards, nor do I know how or why this was recommended to me by UA-cam? However, I truly enjoyed watching this video along with several other videos of yours. I was shocked at how expensive magic cards are, especially after they’re graded by PSA. Thanks for the entertainment and knowledge!!! Cheers from Western Australia.
When I was in High School I collected all the Revised edition multilands to where I had 4 of each. I sold em all for $5 each when I stopped playing. Whoops.

Watching this in 2019, and many of these boxes went up considerably. Pretty interesting.
I feel bad for the guy who didnt wait some of his investments out.
@@Hundo_Mo I was thinking so hard about how the prices might of changed in 3 years!
Rudy did call out in the video that Jade couldn't hold for the 5 - 7year timeframe, and if he still has the 2 Boxes and Lotus he sold these to purchase he's doing alright.
@@Hundo_Mo Sometimes one has to liquidate something at a loss to take advantage of another opportunity. Back in 2017 would you rather have all these or 2 Boxes and a Lotus?

Hey rudy, I was wondering if you have any advice on buying authentic boxes and avoiding scams.
Got any tips?
awesome vids rudy your doing well on patreon good for you i remember when you first started doing it you were at like 2k ???
Hello, I was thinking of opening an online MTG selling store, I was wondering how much you actually save buying from a distributor. I know they say around 45-47 percent of MSRP but I have rarely seen a box sell for anywhere near MSRP prices. So lets say a box sells on ebay for 100 dollars, what on average would be the cost from a wholesale distributor? I am guessing about 80 dollars? So maybe only a profit of 20 dollars a box?
Every intro has a foreboding feel and an other worldly ness, over these vignettes we can see a man slowly spiral into madness, where will it end, I see flames and laughter.
How do you edit your videos? They way you interacted with the green-screen background was amazing
The wave of envy I felt when I saw three unopened Return to Ravnica boxes... my god I WISH I had money to buy even one box of that set, one of my favorites just for the theme alone, same with Gatecrash and Dragons Maze
I'm looking to buy old set's, can u recommend a good place to find them? Thank U.
i think he unloaded those ftv slightly too early. i think dark depths is going up in price with solemnity, along with glacial chasm and phyrexian unlife. also i think another valuable lesson is dont invest if you cant live without the $$ your using to invest.
I'm just gonna guess that the Rudy (house) wins?
Wrong! He bought that stuff to lose money.
I have no clue whatsoever about anything related to MTG or any other card game.....But what triggered me is watching you toss the boxes around like you don't care about the content.
If they get scuffed up, won't that potentially affect the value of whatever's inside?
a box of cards is like a brick, are you kidding me? assuming it stays dry and he doesn't dent the corners or puncture it, he can take the shrinkwrapped box and toss, plop, slide, or bump about all he wants and the cards will be fine. it still made me wince.
Yeah, that was definitely a little hard to watch, but *nothing* compared to how UPS/FedEx/USPS/AMZL drivers treat packages...😳
@@myrealnameisjohndoe116 for real if people think he's being rough they should see how shipping companies handle their packages.
I am shivering when I imagine the beautiful smell of all those boxes wrapped in plastic! :D
I played majic with my brother in the early 90s still have a few of the cards in original boxes are they worth going through to sell?
Yes
Rudy.... I got a question, what is the cheapest set I can buy that u think will go up in price enough to make a decent profit or investment
I love how Rudy perfectly reads all the letter, but struggles reading only the word 'enjoyment' ahaha 3:01
You looking to buy out collections? I started playing in 94 - I stopped in 2002 sent $200-400 per cycle. Tons of Dual lands, some power 9. I wouldn't really want to try to ebay them one by one or anything I'd rather dump everything all at once.
Yes! What are you looking to get?
Secret of investing: sit on CA$H and wait for other "investors" to hit hard times, then offer to bail them out for 30% discount. Wait 2-3 years then quadruple your investment.
that's what I did last March. it was beautiful 🥰
Where did you get that sculpture in the background, and what is it a depiction of?
The man could have at least tripled his money had he waited until today...
dude some of those are 5-10x....i just went through all his prices on his sets vs current prices and not ONE set is at a loss. only 4 years later. wow
Fallen Empire boxes are at 750 to 1K. When he said 150 in the video, I cried for the original investor a little.
@@daxl153 in other comments he said he invested to an unlimited lotus and 1 unlimited mox and one beta mox with the money he got from these, so he is fine i am sure.
I remember finding 3 unopened booster boxes in my basement one time while cleaning it from around the Ravnica release. Tripled my money when I sold them on eBay.
I was into Magic when it came out back in the 90's I could have invested into buying Alphas and Betas unopened boxes back then, but i was just out of High School. I had no capitol at the time. These cards prices blew up in the early 2000's i heard not so much now. That's how it goes i guess, I just didn't have the capitol to buy a whole lot back then.
"Oh! Yellow back!" - Rudy

Hey Rudy how do I get one of those boxes I would really like to buy one
also i wish to ask what are you going to do all them ? just asking cusim looking at a 6000+ bulk cards for 50$ so ya yes im a new player if one cant tell
Rudy, what do you suggest we invest in?
Rudy can you tell me how I can get that many boxes of Mtg cards, so I can open them?
you took him to hose town
I played during the 4th edition/Ice Age/Homelands/Alliances era. What do boxes of those go for now?
Khan is the latest good set. Kaledash is just a ton of fun,
Everything new is overprinted lotory which no one wins
Yeah, that is some incredibly nice packaging right there!😏
I've started investing in the Pokemon TCG, and so far have had an ETB and a pack of cards arrive in nothing but Amazon's bubble wrap envelopes
i'm new to this channel and such but how much is normally a person looking to spend on starting to do that kind of stuff? and honestly with how these new sets are having so many issues in quality and value is it even really worth investing in anything new or to focus older sets?
I'm not sure if you can help but in 2008 ish I was at a magic the gathering tournament at a local game store where the winner got a box that had like 10 or 13 or 15 dragon cards in it. It was kinda a wide box with a clear display and I think 5 of the dragons were on display. Anyway I just wondering if anyone know what this dragon set was called so I could look it up. Thanks.
Yo Rudy, where do you sell your sealed products? Are they on ebay ready to buy from AlphaInvestments? 🤔
Crowe_Reaver I'd like to know as well because he has a ton of sealed boxes and I'd like to snag a couple at some point :/
Out of sheer curiosity, the next time you buy a collection like this, could you open them and show the notable pulls?
"Let's go through it" I thought he was going to open up each sealed box lol
So rough on the poor boxes :-/
Don't worry they don't feel pain.
So you don't play with these cards or open them? you just keep boxes?
Hey Rudy how do I buy one of those boxes

Non-investment and non-magic related: does anyone know a reputable seller of comic book trading cards, sealed boxes.?
Watching this in 2019 hurts my soul a little bit
Why?
@@priceless3020 Some of them finally appreciated. The Conspiracy sets, based on the seller's avg buy price if bought at release (and based on the prices, I'm not sure that was the case) would have returned 13% annualized if sold at today's prices. That's a pretty good return. Conspiracy TtC if bought at introduction would have returned ~21% annualized. Thats an even better return.
But as the seller said - time is money and he had other things to do with his money. I hope it worked out for him.

What's the ROI here? What kind of annualized yield can one expect?
I remember reading a new computer gaming mag and seeing one of the first adverts for Magic announcing its forthcoming and wondering what it was. As a non-player I'm still not totally sure what it is all about but it seems to be more betting on the future $$$ value of cards than playing an actual card game.....
