In this video, I react to Trikaya Psychology's video in which she calls out her ex, Jay Shetty, for what she believes to be misinformation about therapists and the field of therapy. I use this video as a jumping-off point to discuss the very thin line between coaching and therapy.

As a life coach who is slowly but surely pursuing my degree in social work, I'm constantly referring clients out to therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, etc. My job as a coach is to help people set goals that are authentic to them while providing some accountability for that. If their goals are related to their mental health, I refer them to people qualified in my area. Anyways, it's frustrating to see my field like this.

Same here! Many people seek my coaching services, but just based on their initial description it is clear to me they need therapy. And I tell them and let them know coaching is secondary. Healing needs therapy. It's not in my competence as a coach. But this is because my certification clearly outlined the threshold of competence for coaching. We are trauma informed and were recognize when someone firstly needs therapy.

i think there is a sore lack of practitioner-based referral networks here with licensed therapists in germany so this is such a green flag for me because it evades the whole everyone should be able to treat everyone expectation that i think i've encountered here. where there is just no discussion of how do we make sure that this is the right method of approach for me to be engaging with as a patient like how do we gage fit early on to predict that this will move me forward from a stuckplace and not just prolongue it!

One thing I'd like to mention here: many coaching certifications do not have clear ethical guidelines and professional boundaries. The threshold of competence is clearly outlined in sound coaching certifications. Also, coaches who stick to their lane usually do not make it that big. I say this because many people need therapy primarily. Pure coaching is actually for the very few stable / balanced / at peace individuals. I say this with all respect to everyone out there, including myself (I too am human and have had my history of trauma to slowly heal). 🙏🏻

About the last part where you're asking why coaches wouldn't sign up to become therapists.. In my country, the Netherlands, the psychology bachelor is quite competitive to get in to. It's a very popular study. Then after a 3 year bachelor, they have to go through a 1 or 2 year master's. Then a 4 year psychotherapist training. In the best case scenario, it takes 8 years. Or.. You can take a coaching course for a week or month and call yourself a certified coach. Yes, it's a shortcut.

Therapist is different in the UK to in America. Therapists in the UK don't diagnose or use the medical model. Although NHS might ask therapists to record metrics (like phq9).
There is a lot of stigma associated with PD and schizophrenia in the UK and I've heard those disorder labels used as common slurs. Many people go a long time before getting help because they think "I don't want to take resources away from people who need it more".

I’ve utilized both therapy and coaching- Therapy has helped me explore family trauma and interpersonal dynamics.
In coaching I’ve focused on my anxiety, my faith, career or achieving very specific time framed goals where I needed additional accountability.
Yes a therapist can help in those areas but I found that my sessions with a subject related coach are my action oriented and I found that they were truly experts in those fields where I needed strategic guidance.

In the UK only psychiatrists can give diagnoses. It is also extremely difficult to have an assessment with a psychiatrist to be diagnosed. Especially if you have had a diagnosis in the past. Many people who have the means will seek private health care to be able to see a psychiatrist. I have seen a psychiatrist only once over a 10 year period, even though I had requested so. However, my parents' generation and the older ones still either don't know too much about mental health and struggles so they don't care for it, or they still believe therapy is for crazy people. I see it in my parents, how they neglected their mental health and issues and how it affected themselves and those around them; and they're not the only ones who display this sort of neglect. I am going to therapy and have never told my parents about it, largely because they're the reason I need therapy, but also because I know they'd jump to all sorts of conclusions.

Hi Ana. I agree with the points you are making regarding the training and credentials of some online coaches and therapists. I think the money aspect is important and very tricky because a lot of psychologists and therapists charge their clients through insurance especially in the US and I think that’s a major factor in why people hire these types of individuals rather than deal with the nightmare that is American health insurance. I have experience in the medical field and have seen the same psychologist for over 10 years and my insurance issues have come up a few times however my therapist has never turned me away because of my insurance and I’m very fortunate for that however many others can’t say the same. I really enjoyed Jay Shetty's interview, mostly on meditation, a huge interest of mine, with Sam Harris. However, I've since seen an episode he did with Joe Dispenza, in which Dispenza claimed meditation, among other things, can help the blind see. Shetty didn't call this out but instead heaped praise and enthusiasm on Dispenza. I've since seen any number of prominent podcasters, huge names in the UA-cam interviewing business, like Lewis Howes, Tom Bilyeu, and Chris Williamson, do interviews with Dispenza. In the Lewis Howes interview, Dispenza says, "There's information in their blood that can cure viruses. Any virus." It's been disillusioning regarding not just Shetty, who I liked but didn't follow too closely, but a lot of the UA-cam podcasting world. It's interesting but not too surprising Shetty is himself selling materials he's not really qualified to sell.

    • @AnaPsychology

Joe Dispenza's claims are usually rooted in a glimmer of science, but I feel like he takes them to a very extreme point where they cease to be accurate. Tbh my main gripe with him is the fact that he doesn't acknowledge he's a chiropractor, instead framing himself as expert in several very complex fields (quantum physics, neuroscience, medicine, epigenetics). If he were more open about what qualifications he does or doesn't have, it would feel more honest to me.

There's plenty of frauds within the certified therapists as well. Every profession does have their imposters. Just because there are some crappy coaches , doesn't mean whole industry is bad. As for regulations, coaching doesn't need to have similar regulations as medicine/psychiatry as they are not doing anything related to medicine/anatomy/physiology which need to maintain strict guidelines. At its core, coaching is people helping other people. Having a supportive community, that's all coaching is. And it has helped 100x more people than therapists can ever dream of

Thank you for validating my concerns about coaching. I became a certified life coach in 2019, but have never worked in the field because I never felt comfortable doing so. The lines between coaching and counseling felt incredibly vague and dangerously easy to cross. Everything I wanted to do as a coach, I knew could be done much more effectively by a licensed mental health professional. I would never want to scam people out of their money when they could be getting real help.

You’re incredibly wrong. Therapists, by design, don’t do what coaches do. Therapists are explicitly told NOT to help fix a problem. - I say, I’m having issues making friends or getting in a relationship with a partner or getting into a specific career field…
Are there aspects of overcoming those issues that therapists can theoretically help with? Absolutely. That said, at no point are we going to make a checklist of: Do A, then do B, Then do C… that will get us to the second checkpoint which unlocks checkpoint a, b, c in part 2. Once those are completed we can go to part 3.
That will NEVER happen with a therapist in any almost any circumstance. - again, they are told Not to do that. It’s a way of absolving responsibility and this isn’t what I think, this is widely known.

@@skaylingop9673 I agree with your definition of therapy. depends on the type of coach (there are so many different kinds), but if we're talking about life coaching they aren't there to "fix" problems either. They are there to empower the client, help them see new perspectives, and help them move towards their goals. Client is in the driver's seat.

Unpopular opinion: Results speak for themself, and shitty coaches get vetted out. Successful coaches prosper due to word of mouth, not a qualification. There's plenty of qualified therapists who do harm alot of harm to clients, most people seeking assistance don't do their due diligence and vet their therapists. Honestly i think the harm is worse, because many end up believing that therapy is not for me or doesn't work.

In this day & age of social media influencing, there are many word-salad-manipulators who lure people in through emotional connection tactics, then they sell them services: classes, courses, retreats, books, etc...

I have personal experience using a service that was supposed to help me, where they would make me feel awful for days/weeks after every interaction with them and they seemed to want a pat on the back for the ‘good deeds’ that they were doing in a job that they were paid for, and that they were severely undertrained in.

That doesn't mean it is made up. That is a weirdly specific thing for someone to make up, if they're going to make something up. I used to have a coworker who was a former monk. He was a kind and fascinating person to talk to. Jay reminds me of him.

I agree with you that the definition of therapy is not correct. In the Uk registered psychologists may diagnose. For example, I as a counselling psychologist I tend to have a more holistic view than the medical model and do not diagnostise unless I work with insurance clients and it is required. There is now book in the UK by M Trent et al that helps to find a qualified therapy.

    3 Assorted Thoughts:
    1. This talk of mh diagnosing logically entailing the infliction of stigma sounds like anti-psychiatry thinking. I think this notion is based on a failure to distinguish between 'unfortunate' and 'derogatory'.
    2. Over the years, I've been doing a lot of anti-stigma activism that consists mainly of resistance to stigmatizing language--I resist the use of mh slurs ('l**atic', 'n*t j*b',...), words that imply that there are no law-abiding citizens w/mental illness, etc. I'm not offended by the use of 'patient', but use 'client' instead in order to accommodate those who are offended by the former term.
    3. I disagree w/anti-psychiatry because this philosophy is also anti-a-certain-segment-of- the-mentally-ill-population, namely, those who freely comply w/mh treatment. Of course, I also acknowledge the existence of good psychiatrists.
