Finally. I was unable to find one until now. Directly got it from u. Works perfectly. I’m on 15 pro max and need it for a TV production (documentary) with an ultra low key setup. Its technically aspect is approved by the broadcaster and that’s my first paid commercial job on a smartphone.
Hey hey Lars!
I'm so glad you found this video and that the LUT is working great for you! That's exciting about your documentary project! As I play more and more with the iPhone 15 there are so many things this phone can do for video projects without need of a large camera setup! Stay in touch with your commercial job, I'd love to see how the LUT worked in your workflow!
I'm curious, is there a significant difference between using log in the standard camera app and log in the Blackmagic Camera app, or are they the same log format with difference user interfaces for operating the camera?
Hey hey Bill!
I will be making a video more about that Blackmagic Cam App. Just hope they don't toss an update the moment I release it lol.
As far as I could tell the Apple LOG profile between the in-camera app and Blackmagic is exactly the same. However Blackmagics rec2020 HDR is completely different from the in-camera HDR. I was ripping my hair out wondering why the rec2020 was not behaving correctly when I went to transform it.
@@TLDR_filmmaker This one app is likely going to be the reason I buy an iPhone as my next phone. I currently am using an Xperia 1 ii I got a few years ago, and still love in many ways, but it's also made me feel a little bitter towards Sony and how poorly they support their old products. I'm very excited to see and hear peoples experiences with this app.
They are different
@@TLDR_filmmaker re: Rec2020 that's good to know. Very interesting.
Do you know if you can do Apple Log w/ H265 instead of Prores?
@nikilragav2193 Yes, as of the current Blackmagic Camera App version you are able to film Apple LOG in h.265. Provided that you have an iPhone 15 Pro of course.
I love the lut first day using it…only thing what would you recommend for removing color banding..i was shooting in log h.265 i was outside i had a nd filter im a beginning but in each video the sky had banding …i know its a me thing and not the lut but any tips?
Thank you for this as ProRes LOG editing can be so challenging, in any editing software! I am looking forward to trying it!
Hey hey Showingaustin!
No problem! Let me know what you think! Honestly I'm quite impressed with the Apple LOG and how is behaving. Getting this quality from a first party LOG on a camera is a bit more convenient for people that are more video savvy busting out their phone camera for any golden life moments to capture.
is iphone 13 worth it to try this LUT? or only iphone 15?
No it is not worth it. iPhone 13 is not able to film Apple LOG. Only iPhone 15 PRO and MAX have this codec.
Is this all in ProRes (through the BlackMagic Camera app)? Would love to grab an iPhone 15 pro to use Apple Log but don't want to lug around an external SSD for those huge 5gb/minute files.
Hey hey ProductDemos!
The first few shots are done from the in-camera app. The ones where you see me labeled as "Blackmagic Camera App" are the ones shot with that app. All shots are done in Prores422 HQ between the two apps. I will be covering my experience with the HEVC Apple LOG in my blackmagic cam app video. Its doable and the footage so far looks good to me in passing, will dive deeper in the video.
Dumb question - are you able to record with the black magic app with the LUT applied? Or you have edit the footage externally and then add the LUT there?
No such thing as a dumb question... usually lol.
No, you cannot apply the LUT directly on recording, you will have to add it after the fact. However I have a good feeling Blackmagic will make an update in the future that lets you apply the LUT on recording.
is there a way to purchase this lut without paypal?
Figured it out. Just added the option for credit cards.
@@TLDR_filmmaker thanks man!
Can you tell me how can I export a video from Blackmagic camera including the LUT? i have been trying to do it but I am unable to accomplish it because it only shows the video without the LUT.
Make sure you download the latest Blackmagic Camera App that was updated a little over a week ago. Going to the LUT settings menu you are now able to record video with any LUT you want directly applied.
I don’t have the 15 yet but I am getting it soon. I keep seeing people talk about Apple Log and LUTs and show the before and after but never the in between. I shot in ProRes but how do I APPLY the LUTs to get the final result?? Do I need a third party app?
Hey hey!
Yes, you will need to apply the LUT afterwards in your video editor like Davinci Resolve, FCPX, Adobe Premiere. There are tutorials on how to work with LUTS depending on your editing software. I myself will be making a video about it in the future.
hy i like the background music on your video, can you tell me the name of the song please? artist and songname, sadly i can't find it on uppbeat :(
It's "Lost in you" by Abbynoise
@@TLDR_filmmakerthank you ❤
Did you use any exposure comp here? -0.3 or so? Seems like highlights are blown out easy?
I did not. In the samples you see it is either: Raw Footage -> LUT Applied -> Graded with LUT.
These clips were recorded back with Version 1.0 of the app. So I was essentially composing blind without the use of my LUT. I had to go completely off of the Histogram. So some of the shots you'll see the LUT blow out the sky when applied, but I bring it back in the grade.
Does it work in Luma fusion?
Hey hey EmadApple!
I have not personally tried loading the LUT in luma fusion. My LUT is in the ".cube" format. It looks like LumaFusion does support the importing of this LUT type to be used.
Does your LUT work with LumaFusion?
Hey hey!
Yes, you will want to use the 33 cube version (thats already included) for LumaFusion, not the 65.
im pretty sure u did not shoot this in 4k. why did u upscale it to 4k?
Hey hey!
This was all shot in 4k between the main camera lens and the new 5x telephoto. I have noticed that the 5x Telephoto sensor does not seem to process small moving objects well like waving trees leaves in a distance. Stuff upclose looks fine and sharp.
Can you please explain how to use the prores log on the BM camera app?
Hey hey MuseumDentalCenter!
Go into the BM Camera App settings and simply select Apple LOG in the color selection and select Prores as your codec. I will be covering all this in my BM Camera App video coming soon.
Thanks for the reply. I found that if you migrate from an older iPhone model with the BM camera app installed, the Apple Log will be missing. Deleting and reinstalling the BM camera app will make the Apple Log option available.@@TLDR_filmmaker
I'd like to see HDR vs LUT (over LOG) side by side. What happens if you just apply the LUT to the HDR footage?
Hey hey Joe!
I will have a HDR vs LOG look in terms of the Blackmagic Cam app.
For the in-camera app. There is a pretty big difference in Texture detail between HDR and LOG. HDR feels waxy in its overall color and overly crisp when it comes to fine details like hair. LOG looks much more smooth in its gradation of color and more what I'm used to seeing from more higher end cameras.
From what I saw with the HDR from Blackmagic, it is different from the in-camera version. The colors are very different and most of the normal Rec2020 to rec709 conversions create some very odd results thats not true to life. I will be playing around with it more and see if theres any reason to still film HDR for people that want a more pleasing video. Or if a specific conversion LUT could be used to get the Blackmagic HDR to look better.
Stay tuned!
Awesome, Jason. Thank you for the reply and info.@@TLDR_filmmaker
It's interesting but I'm not sure when you would choose to use this? - Tony Northrup tested this, resolution wise, the 15 Pro resolves around the same detail as an 8-10 megapixel camera (i.e. less then the 12 megapixel A7S III once you remove the artificial sharpening - this is in photos, worse in video). As for the lenses, you are getting 13mm f/10, 24mm f/6.3 and 77mm f/24 (120mm f/21 on the Max) fixed aperture equivalents to full frame, that's incredibly limiting. When would you ever go for a 120mm f/21 lens, seems useless.
Hey hey DigiDriftZone!
Video wise, so far, I've noticed the 120mm sensor doesn't seem to resolve fine detail movements well, but the main cameras sensor seems to do a great job.
As for the DOF for each lens. It is a bit limiting for certain shots where DOF would be nice to have. However I am also equally enjoying having such a deep DOF. It sort of forces me to rethink my composition and teaching me how to shoot differently in those situations.
@@TLDR_filmmaker Sure, I agree with that and this is somewhat academic but I found it quite fascinating. Despite the sensors and technologies seeming like they couldn't be more different on paper, in practice, you can apply the same crop factor calculations. You get an image uncannily similar to taking an image on an A7RV at 35mm F/21 and then cropping 70% of the image out to match what the iPhone's 15 Pro Max tele lens does. 70% because the crop factor here is roughly 3.54x.
Similarly if you take an image on the wide lens on the iPhone at iso450, it should equal 24mm f/6.4 at ISO3200 on FF - ISO formula is ISO*(CropFactor*2) - and wow, it does! - same exposure, same field of view, same depth of field, similar detail (if you resize the FF image down to around 8 megapixels and upsample to match the same image size), though iPhone has more aggressive noise reduction out of the box (try this if you get a chance!).
So there's no inherit advantage in DOF, or resolution or low light performance or anything else. But knowing this, if I do want a lot of DOF I set my 24mm on the ZV-E1 to around f/6 and the 12 megapixels still resolves more detail than 48 on the iPhone :)
I think all the negatives & limitations you're mentioning are quickly overshadowed by the fact that this fits in your pocket. You're comparing apples to oranges here. The benefit here is 4k pro res 422 60fps in a camera that takes seconds to deploy, and is always in your pocket. Unless you're filming a big budget job that is actually paying what it's worth to carry around 20k worth of camera gear, bulky DSLRs / mirrorless / cinema rigs with lenses, etc... Then it's not worth the hassle anymore. Especially since majority of videographers these days aren't getting offered 5k+ budgets to make some videos for their small business. The 15pro max gives us the ability to offer video services to smaller paying clients now because it's faster & easier to create the content. Plus... It's story that matters and will always be king.
@@justinmichaelfilms The ProRes I'm less concerned about, I don't use that on my pro gear. It's more the F/24 77mm - I don't care how pocketable that is, I would just never use that, ever. The f/10 13mm in very rare occasions maybe when lighting is great.
The 24mm F/6.3 maybe in some cases for documentary purposes maybe? -- as for photos, landscapes and just as a photo journal. Don't get me wrong, it's cute, but it's good to understand what the limitations are.
Northrup makes some solid criticisms, which are needed in this hype phase of selling new phones and LUTs. But he's also working the anti-iPhone angle for the views. Ultimately the proof lies in people's work. The main sensor is nice. Wish it had even less baked in processing tho. @@DigiDriftZone
Great work! A video I didn't know I needed but glad to see.
Glad you enjoyed it Triflixfilms!
It's so great to now have a proper LOG on the iphone. Makes people who know a bit more about video have the flexibility to really pull out a good look when they only have a phone on them!
Can you send log footage to practice on?
Hey hey suhaibsuleimani2767!
I don't have a way to do this easily at the moment because these files are huge.
nice reviews, but it would be nice if you would also respond to people
He responds to me when I leave comments 👀
Can you tell him that the clip of the surfboard guy is very hard to see with the color grade in the video?
Hahah all of you.
I get to the comments when I can. Always have.
Surfboard guy is a day for night shot. Hard to see in this context when the previous clip before it is bright.
I’m curious to see how it is Apple log in HEVC from the black magic camera app, could be game changing cause shooting in prores all the time is not feasible
it seems that it is available but you need to mess around with the settings, meaning selecting ProRes first and then Apple Log and then go back and change from ProRes to H264 or H265
@@clubrulers does it work?
I have shot some Apple LOG footage in HEVC from the Blackmagic Camera app and it looks pretty good. I will be covering it in my Blackmagic Camera App video.
People are also saying that the technical LUT that converts Apple LOG to Rec.709 results in an over exposed preview in the Blackmagic camera App when using said LUT. I’m not sure if this is the case for NLE’s, but something that would be interesting to explore.
@clubrulers That is what I'm seeing too that the LUT preview in the BM Cam App is not anywhere close and completely overblown. Even if you have the LUT Turned off it does not display correctly when you go past maybe 80 IRE?
This is not the case when you bring the footage into your NLE, the LOG shows up correctly.
Interestingly if you have your preview LUT turned on and you go into your Playback media area in the BM Cam App. Your technical LUT will be applied on the playback and it will be shown correctly without being overexposed.
A lot of times I was essentially filming blind and going off of the histogram to make sure I was within range.
Most likely all these Version 1 bugs will be addressed on the next update.
