    It’s been 3 years since I released a new LUT pack. This time I worked with professional Hollywood colorist Sam Zook in this, specifically for iPhone LOG footage (although I have slapped some of these onto my Sony footage and not bad tbh 😅) We have it on sale right now for limited time to celebrate its release. Enjoy! tinyurl.com/4exuntjn

    • @EnochLight

      @@OVYEDDeno - because as a professional cinematographer/colorist, the person shooting the footage is supposed to have complete control over color grading in post. I find that if you're working in a Rec.709 timeline, the iPhone Log footage is in Rec.2020 and you need to override the colour space to 709 before applying a Log to 709 LUT as the greens and blues will be overly saturated and look unnatural due to the extra latitude of Rec.2020 in those colours. I got the Apple Log to Rec.709 LUT from the apple dev kit as a baseline and it's great, then I can just work around with that. I'm still testing things, I only just got the 15 Pro Max a couple weeks ago.

    I appreciate a pro colorist looking at the log footage closely, that exterior night shot was pretty impressive. I still feel that "phone look" to a certain extent but perhaps that's just a huge depth of field?? Additionally, is this something that you could compare head to head against MotionCam to see how it holds up? Since one is log and the other is cinemaDNG it's not a perfect comparison but it should be close, and I don't have either a 40k monitor nor an iPhone to do the tests myself 😅

    Agree completely - the iPhone is not idiot proof. Your phrase "If you want to use it as a cinema camera, you have to treat it as one." The same doubters are mocking Apple for having shot their Scary Fast Event for substation the cinema camera with an iPhone. They think you can walk around and get amazing work. A good videographer knows the limits of his camera and is able to create amazing videos by knowing how to properly use it. So Amen brother - best advice you can give anyone. BTW - I am getting simply amazing and stunning footage off my iPhone 15 Pro Max with BMC app. It has been a game changer for me and I know a lot of other people now are believers. ♥♥♥ BTW - I have several LUTS but I also have a PowerGrade that I use for most iPhone ProRes 422LT footage. You may want to look at developing your own power grade and can use it with LUTS.

    The power of a reference monitor cannot possibly be overstated. The Sony 310 shows exactly what is there. Without it, little can be reliably accomplished in terms of a final look. It has to be seen to be believed. I feel like I can fly into the images, so perfectly do they mimic what I see in real life. Just like the recording studio speakers we spend car money on, there is no other way to get there.

    Blackmagic Camera App does not automatically record to SSD when you plug one in, only the standard camera app does that. It's a royal pain in the a*se that I have to keep going into BMCA settings to tell it where to record to. Hope they sort it out very soon. On a side note the BMCA app did actually trash a brand new SSD and I lost all the footage on that drive. (a crucial X9 Pro 2GB) I Had to reformat it. When I updated my app store review saying about the SSD issue with the BMCA Apple decided to unpublish my review!

    It’s true, screens are so vulnerable, I took my iPhone 12 screen protector off to sell it and stupidity put phone in computer bag along with a bunch of cables, took phone out only a few days later to find scratched screen, so if your reading this and your selling any phone with protection on, leave it on. I’ve taken a fair few log photos with iPhone 15Pm but have not sat down yet to have a go at seeing if I can improve photos, this has inspired me to have a go over Christmas, going to look for screen protector on my Mac now and always touching the screen without trying too 🤣🤣🤣🤣
    PS. Very true about the light as photos get a more noise and it’s very noticeable in very low light and holding phone still with longer exposure does help

I’d love to see someone like Mark making a feature film with iPhone, even if that means that it will be ready when the next iPhone is launched next year, when the iPhone 15 topic isn’t trending anymore. Link to that $40K monitor please.. Not that I can afford one in my lifetime but just curious about its specs like delta E, warmup time etc.

    Being a Samsung user myself I actually can't wait for this kind of stuff to get to Android, if it ever does. The iPhone was already better at shooting videos before, now it's straight up in another scheme of comparison.

    I’d really love to see someone make a short film with the iPhone 15 Pro series. Just to see how viable it really is.

    Do you get to lock white balance without a pro app? Do you get to choose white balance?
    If it requires a third party app, then I can keep shooting on my 12.

      You can white balance with BMPC app

    Do you first use rec709 lut and afterwards cinematic luts?

  • @KaurH
    @KaurH 7 місяців тому +3

    Great video, but I'm sad to see log > 709 LUTs still being released just by themselves as many colorists prefer to have control over their imaging pipeline and would thus prefer LUTs working in intermediate spaces like ACES and DaVinci Wide Gamut Intermediate without a technical transform baked in. I suggest offering ACES and DWGI variants in addition to the plug&play log>709 version for those who are just interested in the creative look you've made.

      I would love to see DCTLs instead of LUTs. I never use LUTs anymore

    • @KaurH
      @KaurH 7 місяців тому

      @@michaelavrie Same here... unfortunately creating DCTLs for creative looks is much more difficult than baking something you've made in Resolve into LUTs.

    10:45 what do you mean by normal footage? What is not normal with the iPhone footage? Isn’t it a sequence of pictures shoot at define frequency

    Hi. How can I activate the prores 4444 codec in black magic? I have iphone 15 pro max 512gb

  • @PierpaoloPerriFotografo
    @PierpaoloPerriFotografo 6 місяців тому

    Actually I found that the blackmagic stabilization is terrible compared to iOS Camera and Filmic Pro. What do you think?

    • @drumfynnfun
      @drumfynnfun 2 місяці тому

      in cinematic and extreme mode? Terrible because it is not effective or bc it introduces motion blur or other artefacts?
