I'm not sure why nobody else's adobe photoshop pen tool tutorials cover this. this really helped me out.
just in general, when i had a shape connected, like the outline of a horse, but wanted to break the path/line at the tail to add hair, upon using the delete node pen tool, the path would always stay connected and the overall shape of the horse would morph. from this, i learned that to BREAK a hole in my outline, i need to use the direct select tool, make sure only one specific node is highlighted, and hit the delete key on my keyboard. whew! i could not find this information for the longest time. thank you!
I am so glad you found this video and were able to solve this problem. Thanks for letting me know it worked for you.
Super useful tip ❤️ thank you so much
Glad it was helpful!
Seven years later and this is still a very valuable trick that isn't immediately an answer i see when I google it. Thank you Helen for making this video or I wouldn't have learned how to delete path sections correctly.
I am so glad this helped you Myles and thank you for taking the time to comment.

how do you cut a slice of a path shape? like in Illustrator there's a tool for cutting a path line, but on photoshop i guess it's not available. also, how do you start drawing a new path shape remain in that same layer (without ps creating a new layer for it?)
Thank you for this very helpful tip!
Awesome news!
Smart move. Thanx!
Thank you! Glad to be of help.
Cheers! I just spent an hour or or so looking this up and trying to work out. Yet so simple.

Add an anchor point and delete it... thank you. It was driving me insane trying to figure out how to delete a segment without deleting the entire shape. Everything else I've seen just use the direct select tool and hit delete but that doesn't work. Your method on the other hand is quite lovely.
very useful and well spoken, what version of pshop is this though, need to say,as you are accessing premade paths but where are they in CS6 ? However two adverts appear over the last part I wanted to view and are not removeable, no x to click on, rerun it and they appear again.
Sorry about that. I moved the ads so you can see the end of the video better. I hope this helps? I am using pre-made paths which are shipped with Photoshop. In CS6 just select the Custom Shape tool and then the shape from the dropdown list on the control bar at the top of the screen. I hope this helps?
OK, so how would you use the pen tool to draw the outline of shape THEN draw a line across it, and join them together?
By the way which version of PS are you using? I am using Photoshop CS6.
You're a babe. saved me alot of work!
+Fresh Clip Media Ha! Thank you!
many thanks
I don't see the need of adding anchor points before deleting a segment. You can just select the segment with direct selection tool. Only the selected segment will be deleted. I use CS6, but I think it has been this way for many revisions.
I doesn't work in CC.
How to you make a point go off in two places, like the letter Y?
Learn how to split and join paths (and why you might want to do this) in #Photoshop.
Great Tutorial! Right to the point.
John Mendez Thanks John! glad you liked the tutorial..
you do not cover what is in the title... i have to circles that do not connect on the inside and th outside i want them to be the same path so i can connect them with vertices
You can make two circles on the same path by making each circle as a path then copy and paste one into the other. I don't understand what you mean by connecting them with vertices though?
It's just doesn't work! :(
I have a closed path with 8 anchor points.
I've selected 3 anchor points with Direct Selection Tool.
I've pressed a delete key and... the whole path disapears :/
AND HE IS THE ANSWER!

I bet even creators of Photoshop doesn't know that this bug exists.
Oh Yeah! I would have had trouble reproducing that issue because I would be unlikely to have selected more than one layer but I can totally see how that might happen. I'll look into actually making a video for that problem/solution.
Thank you sooooooooooooo much for taking the time to swing back with the information - I so appreciate it and so will the next person who encounters this issue :)
God damit, for mine it just connects where the points were!
I figured it out, you go into the 'convert point tool' and add the tangents or handles or whatever they are called and then delete the points. I think it wouldn't let me delete the line segment because I drew it with the curve line tool.
Great catch! Sounds like that might have been the problem. Thanks for letting me know.
trying to do this in 2024 and it doesnt work like this
