4-year-old Ralfy: "The whisky has a hit of milk, strained peas and smashed carrots...but those are the only tastes I know so far"
This is the closest you can get to hanging out with a friend at a nice pub during lockdown. Good advice, Ralfy.
Wait...a Ralfy book? Sign me up!
Thank you Ralfy. Have cut back with drinking in the past 6 years and started enjoying a dram of whisky now and then.
Drink responsibly.
And munch more marzipan.
Hard liquor at 4, cigars at 9...welcome to Scotland :o)
Meth at 11...welcome to Australia
4? That's late for a Scot....;)
Ralfy, your whisky tutelage is priceless...but I could stand to see more of these slice of life Ralfy vids... reminiscing about Scotland, your fondness for Doctor Who(the Dalek is prominently placed), life in the Irish Sea......or whatever you feel like blethering aboot, really...
"Sharp, nippy and exotic" You were a gifted reviewer at the ripe age of 4.
karma...Moozart wrote his first symphony at 4...Ralfy entered the world from the angelic future cyberspace
Hi ralfy
Hope you are getting along well, your subject was very much appreciated, it took me down memory lane, you have convinced me to tell my story. I was around 8 years old and I would lay down in the front seat of my father's 1952 Pontiac cheftone and would turn on the radio 📻and this night I ran down the cars battery, most importantly I had lit up my father's cigar left in the ashtray, I didn't know he would come out of the friends house and I guess he knew that I had lite up his cigar, so he told me to come into the house, and he said you are grown up now, and then he said here is a brand new cigar, and then he said lite it up so I did, then he said here is a great whiskey (old crow) so I started to puff the cigar and I was blowing the cigar, and he said no no, inhale it, don't blow, he then said take the shot glass and drink it down, which I did, and just shortly after I was throwing up outside the front door, needless to say that was the last I had experienced cigars and whiskey for a long long time, it was years before I attempted it again, in fact not until I joined the army in 1968 and went to Vietnam, I will never forget that for as long as I'm alive, I now as you know drink scotch whiskey, but I don't drink until I'm drunk, anymore, what an awesome experience I had as a child, thanks for the trip down memory lane, and keep up the great reviews, cheers brother !!!
Been drunk more times than i can count. Sorry. Funny. since I have been watching Ralfy, I have really gotten in to scotch. Oddly enough I do not drink but maybe two drams in a sitting watching reviews.Realizing that exploring flavors in whiskeys instead of just shooting them down has really changed the way I drink now. I never thought that I could actually enjoy sitting in my house and exploring how whiskeys can be lovely WITHOUT getting trashed. Thank you Ralfy for passing on your Knowledge and your compassion in your videos. wish you all the best, and hope I get to meet you in person one day. My dream vacation is to one day go to Isle of Man and see the motorcycle races for my birthday. June second during the TT races. That would be so cool. Keep up the good work!!!!!
As I am turning 21 in 5 days, I feel like the timing of this video couldn't be more appropriate. I look forward to having a nice collection, yet having the integrity and the will to see those bottles around for many a month.
UnknowingPlayer wating 21 to drink ... murica is just wierd
Good Point! Social media can be very "dangerous" in one way or another ...
Best Extras I've ever listened to.
Such a good message. Very focused, short and sweet, to the point, and what a fantastic insight. Thank you.
Thanks for the wisdom Ralfy, I keep a check on my own intake and while I get to that edge on occasion I take regular breaks and monitor my liver and kidney functions with bloodwork. It can creep up on a person when the product is so alluring as Single Malts but must still be kept in check. Thank you for enlightening those who may not see that yet.
Surprised not to hear the word "pished" during this vid
This vid ranks high in my all time favourites, Ralfy. Thanks for this truthful and wise words and for sharing them with us.
I love these talks! It’s the kind of deep but enjoyable conversation one hopes to have at a pub besides the typical banter. Hope to someday visit Scotland and enjoy a whisky in a nice pub!
Ralfy you’re a good guy. I always trust your whiskey reviews, but these bits of wisdom are also greatly appreciated.
It took one bad time being drunk for me to establish limits and stick to them.
When I was beginning my third year in college, my roommate and I decided to have a wine tasting with wines we had. Between the two of us there were about 5 or 6 bottles, most of them sweet wines, and from each bottle we poured a full drink's worth. Within around 2 hours I had had 6 drinks, and being the lightweight that I am, it hit me hard. Sure enough, I became nauseated and rushed to the bathroom to be sick.
Problem was, I couldn't; nothing would come up. So I'm sitting here over the toilet with horrible nausea and the room spinning. To make matters worse, I'm also a hypochondriac who panics anytime his body does something unusual. Normally I can beat the panic with reasoning, but I was too drunk to think straight, so I ended up freaking out because of the symptoms which only made them worse.
I finally started to overcome the panic about 2 hours later, and the nausea subsided an additional 3 or 4 hours later. However, I had had the worst heartburn for a week after that that, and I noticed my stomach was weaker than normal for the next couple of months. It was a long time before I could drink wine of any kind again, and I still can't stomach sweet wines.
Thanks to that incident, I now monitor my drinking very closely, because I don't want to experience that ever again.
Great point near the end. My father makes home made fruit brandies, and with many delicious alcohol being free and available to me, I sometimes used to lose track of my drinking. Now I am good and moderate, but wish I saw this video a few years back.
This is one of the best extras i watched so far
Christ, I hadn't thought of the internet insurance angle...
Neither did I. Clever man that Ralfy is... hahha well aged and more up-to-date than most youngens. I really like his view on life, he brings up many interesting ideas and points of view.
Take care ;)
Very interesting Ralfy... and informative. Thanks 👍
Hi Ralfy....fascinated to know more about your book. Important point about being mindful of how much we drink at home. One of the main reasons i haven't been to a whisky festival is because i would be too tempted to try my best at trying everything!
In China I had to really watch out for the Baijiu. ABV varies a lot and they like to toast (bottoms up). I eventually had to pass on it and only have low ABV wine. I appreciated your vid on the 7 levels of intoxication. I set a limit years ago of no more than 2 drams in one evening and at least one hour between them with plenty of water.
Sneaky drunk...happened to me many years ago, at a bar with friends. The place was packed...wall-to-wall people. I finished my drink, looked up, and the bar was completely empty except for my group. Hours had gone by; I had no idea. Did I have one drink? Two? Three? No, it was far more than that (according to my friends), but I had no idea. I tried to stand up and fell over. I couldn't feel my face. I had to be practically carried out to our car. I didn't touch alcohol for years after that...the event terrified me. So yes, it happens, especially when you're not paying attention. Thanks, ralfy...great message once again.
. . . the experience is never forgotten !
Good points of view . I hope people into whisky or other liquor would watch this eye opener blog . Cheers to you Mate .
Great video, most people treat getting drunk like an achievement and laugh about it.
One thing that gets me mad is people and TV shows, saying how bad illegal drugs are, people that use them are criminals and the like. The next sentence they joke in about how much they love wine and about how they can't wait to get home to crack open a bottle or have a gin and tonic.
Alcohol is a drug weather you like it or not, it's more harmful than illegal drugs if you go by deaths and users.
I don't know how government can say getting pished is fine but if you use illegal drugs and feel high you're a criminal. Why do they get to decide what drug us fine and what isn't.... don't get me started on drug testing at work, checking to see if you've been high when you're at home, even though you're sober for work... imagine if they done that with alcohol.
Moderation is the key in all cases, anything can be abused.
I'm sipping a glass of Appleton estate 12 as I type, it's not a good flavor 💩
Excellent advice Ralfy
So... Ralfy... your parents' liquor cabinet... what were the malt/blend marks? ;)
Here here Ralfy well said big brother is always watching and now with thousands of eyes
I'm from the Philippines. I am going to find a way to get my hands on that book of yours. You've been my guide in not only my journey in discovering the wonderful world of whiskey but also rum, brandy, and other fine spirits and even cigars!....but also I blame you for the random comments of people around me sayin that i have a very slight scottish twang on my speech. Anyways love your work. Mabuhay ka!
As much as I love whiskey, I hate being drunk. If I feel a buzz coming on, I call it quits. I don't mind the euphoric feeling, but I HATE the sickness that follows. Good advice for fellow maltmates. I'm enjoying a dram of Cooper's Craft bourbon as I watch this before settling in for the night. Cheers, mate!
Oh Ralfy..... I think we've all been there. Try to take something away from it. It's part of life. We don't go out to have a sinfully, and it's not about the drink but the people we are with, enjoying ourselves. I'm here once chap, not a prequel. Enjoy ourselves, but know our boundaries. You know alot about whisky, but you know alot about life chap. Really enjoyed this.
'I can remember every time I've been drunk' checks to see if the upload date was April 1st
When Trenny and C get drunk we make happy memories! Gotta be a happy drunk!
Not fans....more like coworkers! Ah hahah just kidding of course we’re fans. Ralfy is THE whisky legend!
Looking forward to that book Dear Sir!
Again, wisdom that will stand the test of time 👌! Thanks for a great video Ralfy! Slainte 🥃!
As the Christmas work do comes up these are wise words of wisdom. Ralfy is spot on again and it's why I restrict my social media footprint and are careful what I post.
Good video bro, great reminder to be aware! I was just pondering the interesting fact last night that alcohol is a very rare drug in that it is a stimulant and a depressant... If you are about taste and smell and a little stimulation great, that's the pros, but once you cross the tipping point to it being a suppressant ya gotta be careful, there is very little of fun down that road. I confess,I probably drink a tad more than is reasonable, and if you can recognize that, take a break for a week or two, dry out.. you'll come back with a new appreciation and less will go a long way again :-)
Thanks Ralfy boy. Sending you only good thoughts.
Your stories are hilarious, because they have been true in my life, too. Yes...I can count the times I have been drunk!! ...and I don't know HOW I got home but I was stupid to drive. Thank you for the reminder...I appreciate it.
I will usually have 1 or 2 whiskys. Sometimes I will have 3 if spaced out through an afternoon/evening. Whisky deserves respect in multiple regards and if one wants to drink to get drunk they should switch to cheap vodka IMO!
That being said, I have also had my younger years of going out and getting absolutely hammered! So glad I got out of that messy lifestyle!
I remember sneaking in swigs of my stepfather's bottles of Harvey's Bristol Cream (yummy as I recall) and vodka (instantly sick to my stomach) as a teen.
Most of us have had similar experiences and have averted disaster. Others, not so fortunate.
Not too long ago, the misses was visiting her sister for the weekend, I was on my own. I was just getting into the bourbon train. I had discovered a bottle that was just so delicious, dried fruit, cherry, carmel and spice, yum. The music was bringing me back. I woke up face down in the cool grass in the back yard. There is more to the story but I will leave it there.🤕😝
I feel like everyone who drinks overindulges eventually, and leans this lesson the hard way.
I've learned over the years to drink for taste and not for effect. Regrettably, I did not have that discipline when I was young.
Ah, the sneaky drunk!
Awww Ralfy. I wish you had longer talking videos
Well said!

"When I was drunk.....I decided to become a mortician..."
Must have a signed copy...
I work away a lot but when I get home to Dublin I tend to have two or three good sessions with plenty of Guinness and Irish Whiskey. .and look forward to being drunk...if you are with good company these sessions are absolutely essential and good for your spirit. ...the trick is not to over do it and never drink if you having a bad day .
. . . your right - the trick is not to over do it, that 'balance' is an aquired skill !
You had pocket money at the age of 4?
. . . some, not much !
A comment about nothing
to buy lager
I tend to drink and drink and drink until I can't drink no more.
Yep the times in the past, I have got to bed the room starts spinning, and the bed seems to keep going up and down to the ceiling, the. The day after, you can’t remember how you got home.
hmm...what usually happens when I have beer, ipa or lager what have you then chasing or just enjoying it late at night watching UA-cam music or listening to a CD or vinyl late at night one thing leads to another and no one else here to tell me then wake up on my couch 2-6 in the morning as I've passed out. Feel guilty and upset when it's a work day!
It's my 40th am drunk and looking at you Ralfy tonight I'll pay for it in the morning but sod it, can't wait for the book when is it out
At a whisky festival here in Nagoya a few years ago, I tasted some 37 year old Brora for 10$ a half shot. The mistake was I tasted this last- as a sort of cherry on top of the event.
Big mistake! I cannot even remember tasting! Now I taste the best ones first and the curious ones last.
...When I came to my senses, I woke up with a woman that I had just married.
Man, you would be a blast to have a dram and a pint with, Ralfy. When I rediscovered booze again, it was in your magnificent country of Scotland. Dun Flodigarry on the Isle of Skye...
Another great vid ralfy, you speak wise words!! Could you possibly do a video more geared towards newbie's in regards to the different flavours you can pick out from different whisky's? I'm new and get a few but struggle pinpointing flavours! Cheers
I watched this over a Jura 2016 Tastival.......the best Jura I have tasted..
If these stories are a teaser of what's to come in your book Ralfy, you'll have to let me know the publication details. Great stuff.
Well putt.. I'd like to ad the other dangerous type. Is when your hurting so much, for whatever reason, the liquor does a fine job dampening that pain. To a point you just can't get to sleep without it.. ..is a time to be really, really strong and discipline your actions. As for social media: That makes me puke without the booze😃
Not much of a drinker, but seems to me like this is good and wise advice
I’ll imagine we’re at the Mashtun in Aberlour or The Highlander Inn in Craigellachie 😁 Please, go on
Way, way back in the day I once had to be the "accused's escort" to an RAF airman who was up in front of the Flight Commander on a charge of Drunk and Disorderly Conduct. The charges and details were read out before the Flight Lietentant asked the accused if he had anything to say? The bloke was obviously still a bit wobbly on his legs from the night before but without hesitation he replied in clipped military tones;
"Yes sir. I'd like 3,256 other offences to be taken into consideration". I collapsed laughing and was subsequently charged with insubordination and the poor guy got a £50 fine and two weeks confinement to barracks and loss of privileges. What a laugh though.
LED Bulb Yes.
I can see it now Clive and Ralphy drunk sitting around in their diapers.
There is the bad sort of vulnerability, and the good, healthy kind...this here was the latter, maybe we'll just call it 'being authentic'. I'd be very interested in reading your book. May I ask the genre? Keep up the good work, love the Extras!
mos honest n as most of us hav bin there, a self loathin vlog 2date Ralfy.
bravo
Some people can handle their booze, some can't. Know you limit, play within it.
Sometimes limit is just walking away!
Yeah....whisky and beer make for blackout drunks BIG TIME...
Now that’s a book I’ll
Be buying and better not in Kindle edition!
And Damn good extras.
No harm no foul
I tried the ol mans whisky( Canadian club) when I was 9, he caught me and made me drink a massive peg, i puked everywhere !😨.....never touched whisky again until I was about 40😆
Just this last Saturday I had 3.5 8% beers and must have got sunstroke along with it because I ended up paralytic on the bathroom floor, throwing up into the toilet. Once I was able crawl to the bathroom door to unlock it my concerned yet amused flatmates helped me to bed but not before one of them took a photo of me unable to get up. Thankfully she is kind enough not to have posted it anywhere, just showed it to a couple of our friends the next day. Kind of an unfair situation since I really didn't drink much.
. . . put this down to experience, stick to less-strong beers, about 4.3%vol is ideal
Blaaaaaaah... Ralfy...I LOVE YA Man...
(Not drunk)...
Honest
My mind instantly made a parody of an Eric Burdon song out of your title, LOL.
Well said mate! My experiences are all "Military* related .
Here its a weekend hobby of half of a nation.
I laughed so fucking hard from 7:29 to like 9:45 that shit is pure goddamn gold
#Respect to u sir...gr8 knowledge, gr8 content always...!!!
Gagandeep Singh chaloji changa. Tenu sahi lagya video.
Is a Whiskey tasting like a wine tasting where you can spit it out after tasting.
Obelix fell into a cauldron of the Gauls' magic potion, I am guessing you fell into the proverbial cauldron to :)
By accident ofc
On a side note, been watching and really liking another whisky aficionado, Whisky in the 6
So tru...
Too bad as a wee lad that you didn’t just go for the Irn Bru 😏 You would have only had a sugar hangover 😂
"a journy thru the glens of my yuth"
a fiting name 4 a chptr maltm8
and that why I have universal health insurance and won't even consider a contry where thats not the practice.
Ralfy you're not drunk if you can lay on the floor without holding on.
I love your content and have been diving into your videos. It makes me want to try decent spirits but i can't be sensible with it. Even wine. Just beers for me. I just can't beleive you have been drinking whisky for as you have and only been drunk a few times? Who doesn't love a good knees up?
I've only been downright apocalyptically drunk a few times in my life, and luckily it has generally been OK (if a little confusing) at the time.. Absolute hell the day after, of course. I generally only drink beyond 2 or 3 drams/beers/units if I'm in very good friendly company, so even the times where I've been quite pished, it's been entertaining and most importantly safe (in a physical injury sense, not for my liver obviously). However, I have also on occasion done the "vomit in the sink, run the cold tap, vomit again" thing, which is why I refuse to touch Fernet Branca ever again.
But I have to say, I've never gotten to the level of making outright stupid decisions, to me there is no excuse for being an idiot, pished or not.
I go to a lot of festivals and concerts, and I do see some people just go completely crazy and nuke themselves. I'd much rather stay at a nice 2-3 beer low-level buzz and just stay at that level by balancing alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks (and food, important!) accordingly. Shows are so much more fun when you can actually remember them afterwards :-) And I have a strict maximum 2 drams per week limit for whisky I'm drinking by myself for the taste.
Since I met my lovely German girlfriend, she's introduced me to radler/shandy, so much better for cooling down on a hot day or when grilling, than drinking straight beer.
Don't drink to blast yourself out of your mind, a nice low-level smooth buzz is what you want.
Henrik Nielsen Radler ftw! Cheers from germany :)
Facebook etc have run face detection on all their photos it is trivial to skim off it same with status updates etc... that said I have had employers say they were concerned about hiring me because I didn’t have enough updates, photos etc
Sorry Ralfy, I couldn’t help but laugh when you said you got drunk at 4 years old. I was not expecting you to say four years old, and then I thought to myself did he really say four years old or forty years old, then you repeated it and I heard correctly, it was four years old, how crazy...😳😮
Hey Ralfy, since you grew up in Scotland and have been around a fair share of drunks, how would you define alcoholism?
. . . regular intoxication beyond dignity and self-respect resulting in self-harm.
Is there ever a time when it’s okay to get drunk? When? Where? Why? What’s A good thing to do when you’re peshed ? Lastly , what’s the best thing to eat and drink, besides H2O after you’ve been drinking?
. . . never a good time, unless you remain sober whilst drunk.
@@ralfydotcom Yes Sir. Thank you. And Late congratulations on setting a Motorcycle land speed record .
Hello Ralphy from Canada. I love your VLOGS. I was wondering if you would review a whisky called Lochindaal X, or at least tell me what i may expect before i open mine. I purchased it from Prauge. I know Jim McEwan from Bruichladdich makes it, Im excited to uncork it. Thanks
. . . not actually tasted this one yet !
Well i sure wish i could share it with you. And thank you for giving me a response. As always i will watch all of your great VLOGS
