lovely advice and wisdom! i can add a few tips i've learned over time as well.
1: sometimes throwing up (particularly if you've had way way to much, or combo'ed alcohol with unsettling food) is a good idea. don't try to fight it all night and lose the battle when you try and lay down for bed. just throw up before you sleep. it gets ride of that food and any extra alcohol left in the stomach.
(and i fully agree with ralfy about keeping a bucket or trash can or large bowl with you incase you throw up in the middle of the night).
2: when you start drinking water don't drink it icy cold. for a start its harder on your stomach when its cold so its harder to get down, secondly the body absorbs water better at room temperature then when its very cold.
3: if you know you will be drinking a lot make sure you clear away anything before hand that you might possibly trip over when you become heavily inebriated! tripping over things on your floor is NEVER fun. but its even less fun when you are very drunk and can't easily stand back up.
4: finally, if you live alone make sure you can easily reach your phone incase you need to call for medical help. people die from alcohol overdose all the time sadly. and also its possible to have other medical emergencies when under the extra stress of booze. and when you are not fully in control and in need of help as fast as possible having a phone to hand instead of lost might just save your life.

Important topic, especially when people start drinking to escape their problems, start drinking to feel normal, or drink because of mental illness. My brother was an alcoholic. Over the course of his life it consumed him. Even after he lost everything and his health deteriorated there was nothing that would stop him from destroying himself. He died in November at the ripe old age of 54, a shell of his former self. I grieve his loss but truth be told we lost him many years ago. I enjoy a dram of whisky but never more than 2 and never more than 3 nights out of any given week. I follow this rule rigidly because I know how easily one can get lost in it.

I'm not an alcoholic, but I definitely have the potential to be one. There have been parts of my life when I have drunk far too much. If you find yourself spending most of your leisure time in the company of heavy drinkers your life is going wrong. The problem is we tend to see alcoholism as a cliff edge you can fall off and if you haven't fallen off the cliff you are not an alcoholic, but it's not like that. It's more like a gentle grassy slope on a summer's day. The top of the slope is quite a pleasant place to be and we visit it more often because we like it there and sometimes we wonder a bit further down the slope in our alcohol consumption, but what we may not recognise until too late is the slope gets steeper and steeper, until it does become a cliff edge and people are hanging on by their fingernails and struggling to climb back up, but some of them never make it and fall to their deaths. It may just be my nature, but I know I have it in me to wonder further down that slope than is good for me. It requires a small act of will for me to not do that. I will buy a bottle of malt every couple of weeks and enjoy that over 3 or 4 evenings, but there's always a bit of me that says you enjoyed that where's the harm in buying another one and enjoying that too. I have to exercise some self-discipline not to do that, because I know it would become an every night habit for me and then the amount I drink every night would increase and I would end up much further down the slope than I intended. I think we all have to recognise that alcohol has an addictive quality to it and if you are not careful you can become psychologically and then physically addicted to it. Almost all the pleasures of life come with attendant risks. The problem with alcohol is those risks aren't always immediately apparent. Whether it is over consumption on a single evening, or over consumption on a regular daily basis it's very easy to get a long way down the slope before realising you are in trouble. You need to do your best to keep in mind that it is an ever increasingly steep slope and where you are on that slope. These are just my experiences and opinions, for what they are worth, and others may see the world differently.

I've only been blackout drunk once in my life, no memory of most of the night or how I got home, at a party of people I didn't know, six towns away from my house. I once blacked out and woke up in a different city, missing my shoes & shirt, covered in dirt, bleeding from the forehead and nose, and missing my wallet. I'd also damaged my right knee and couldn't put much weight on it. Still had my phone, but it was completely dead and smashed.
I distinctly remember how terrified and vulnerable I felt. At the time, not thinking straight, I resigned to the fact I wasn't going to be able to afford to get home or even eat. I was just stuck there. I sat on the floor and sobbed, 20 years old and a complete mess. Embarrassing to say the least.
Some kind guy found me and escorted me to the train station where somehow I managed to sneak shirtless on to a train without a ticket and got off at my hometown where I just about hobbled home. Took me a good few days to recover from most of it, and months before my knee fully healed. Had the lovely surprise of finding out I'd also spent all my savings and inheritance on champagne that night too. I don't even enjoy champagne...
Safe to say that was my turning point!

One thing I touched upon today was that I took a good whiff of the whisky glass after having tried the classic laddie from bruichladdich and the glass had a aroma of honey and mollasas with a very prominent dried oak aroma. This was not as present when TASTING the whisky but after allowing the glass to air out after finishing the glass to revealed a character to the whisky that would have otherwise gone unnoticed.

Personaly I have kept record of my alcohol intake for severel years now. My trick is to keep count during every day and before bedtime write the sum of the units down in the top of my calender. This way the intake does not creep up without im avare. My rule is keep the weekly intake belov 20 units of alcohol and never never drink more than 10 in one single day. This simple method has keept me ahead of "mistakes and denial" for years now 😊.

When I was in college 30 years ago, the rule of thumb that helped me avoid many a bad hangover headache the next day was to drink 8oz of water before bed plus take 2 aspirin, acetaminophen or etc. You might still be foggy-brained the following day but you didn't have a throbbing headache at least.

Try this Ralfy of an evening. Have very little carbs at dinner then at say 8.30pm have 3 egg yokes boiled or fried then have 2 to 3 drams and see how you feel. Then another night having the same meal then have 3 slices of toast with jam then have the same 2 to 3 drams. I have noticed that I feel the drink far more while having carbs. Apparently sugar and bread cause more liver damage than spirits.

    • @jamesbrown8503
      @jamesbrown8503 3 роки тому

I had the opposite when I was on a keto diet, I read that it's because when your liver doesn't have any carbs to deal with it absorbs alcohol twice as fast, also carbs make you retain water and sodium so you could get dehydrated more easily when drinking on low carb. Not being contradictory, everybody is different. It's true about carbs and liver damage though, I think I read somewhere that non alcoholic fatty liver disease kills more people than smoking.

When I get thirsty after a drink or maybe two, I get a syrup and water and be done with drinking.

good advise people need to hear. the truth hurts some times but a real friend will tell you the truth so you avoid the really painful things that will happen if you continue to live a lie

I hate the feeling of being drunk. That's why I never have more than two or three drams per evening, and those evenings are few and far between. Being 6'4 and 300+ lbs, that amount of whisky doesn't really affect me.

Ralfy always speaks the truth. This time it is the ugly truth of what does happen when you imbibe too much. The truth must get out. Thanks Ralfy. Unfortunately knowing and doing are two separate things.

Probably worst for you Ralfy, I’m sure everyone wants to have a round or a dram with you. I agree with the video, it takes some experience to know your own personal limit. Some bumps in the road to get there but that’s life I suppose.

I recently bought a set of nice Culver glasses made in the 1960s to help me enjoy my scotch. I don't like being drunk on scotch. I don't enjoy the drink, I don't savor the experience.

Great topic for a whiskey channel. However, some of the social pitfalls mentioned are strangely specific.

Tomatoes. That’s right. Tomatoes help to lessen the effects of heavy alcohol consumption on your organs. So eat some cherry tomatoes instead of those peanuts and popcorn at the pub.

It took me several whisky festival to learn that there's actually no added value to swallowing the whisky when you're trying to rate it. Now I'm spitting most of them out and it's still a balance act when you're tasting 40-50 of them in few hours.
