    hello malt comrades,
    on the topic of miniatures: just enjoyed a micro 15 yo Balvenie at 50.5 ABV,; screw top, full neck fill and absolutely exquisite; found it by sheer miracle in an off the beaten track location in the Iberian Peninsula...oh, cost me 2 euro...and there are more...will keep you posted...

    I do believe Ralfy gets younger! A wee dram (imbibed sensibly of course) must be good for you. Thanks for these great reviews, on which my malty maturation has relied since number one. Slainte Ralfy, and all malt mates out there.

    I haven't drunk very much whisky in my life, but I've watched hundreds of your videos. Knowing my habit for bingewatching your channel, my family got me a bottle of Springbank 12 yo at cask strength for my birthday. I want to give you a big thank you for inadvertently getting me to start my whisky journey with such a high quality single malt. Cheers!

      Wow, Springbank 12 as your first single malt? Not one I would recommend as a beginner's malt. How did you get on?

    • @brotomann
      @brotomann 6 років тому +3

      I got on quite well! The initial nip on the palate and nose was quite sharp but still pleasant, so I added two teaspoons of water and let it sit for about 10 minutes. When I got back to it, the nose had sweetened into a very lightly smoky vanilla marzipan mixed with some slightly burnt honeycomb confectionery. The taste was initially like stewed blackberries in a vanilla black pepper syrup with a liquorice undertone, finishing into a spicy ginger and light clove with a distinctive dark chocolate aftertaste which even had the same kind of tongue coating rich mouthfeel as having melted a nice square of dark chocolate in your mouth. It's definitely very complex and will require quite a few nights spent with it to get to know it properly, but I'm certainly not complaining about that! The only minor problem I've had is getting used to that intense alcoholic mentholic burn in the nose when breathing out during a taste, but it's not too bad
      I think having spent a lot of time with strongly brewed gong fu Chinese teas gave me a good start for picking out complicated mixes of flavours. I definitely see a lot of parallels between puerh tea and whisky in particular.

      brotomann this couldn’t have been your first malt ever: picking.up so many flavours! Even a springbank has not that many 😉

    • @RebMordechaiReviews
      @RebMordechaiReviews 6 років тому

      Springbanks are quite spirit hot driven which is why it is never recommended as a beginners malt. I'd try something more approachable at the beginning like a Deanston Virgin Oak or 12 YO, Auchentoshan American oak, Glenrothes Alba Reserve and many others...

    Great advice as usual Ralfy. You can pick up some real gems at auction that fly under the radar. I picked up a half bottle of Chateau d'Yquem 2002 for £85 which was completely ignored by the whisky heads. Likewise a Del Maguey Pechuga mezcal for half it's retail price because nobody was interested. Other people can chase the premium stuff, I'm not interested. It's the quirky offerings that get my interest.

    Unless it's limited Bourbon or Scotch, or age statement Japanese, most whisk(e)y isn't collectible. Ex: Certain rye's like Van winkle or Thomas Handy or Sazerac 18 are collectible. But others like Boss Hog or Jame E. Pepper 15, are a tough secondary market sell. Irish whisky also isn't much of a collectors item and neither is highly awarded whisky like Kavalan. Branding is everything as is rarity, age statement, and availability.

    My dad collected miniatures until he had too many to keep. I've ended up with most of them. Some I may sup, but most of the older blends look like they might be a mix of cold tea and white spirit.

  • @StevenCalwas
    @StevenCalwas 6 років тому +2

    Fake bottles aren't only at auctions. I bought a special single-cask offering from a reputable online shop. It was delicious, but when I went to buy more, it was sold out. Then a few months later, it showed up again, same bottle from the same cask at the same shop. I bought three bottles and thought I was such a lucky guy. But when I opened the bottles and drank them, their contents were nothing like the first bottle. Tasted like a cheap blend rather than a single-cask malt. Hmm, but because the shop was very well-known and reputable, I attributed it to my own changing tastes. A year later, the same cycle happened again. A different single cask malt was released, purchased, and apparently sold out, only to reappear a few months later. I gave it a second chance, this time buying only one bottle, but that second purchase was again vastly below the quality of the first bottle and didn't even seem to have come from the same distillery. I finally learned my lesson and won't be making a third go-round.

    • @darlsbarkley3493
      @darlsbarkley3493 6 років тому

      You should mention the name of this "reputable" shop so others can be avoid buying fake whisky.

    • @StevenCalwas
      @StevenCalwas 6 років тому +1

      Naming the shop is a tricky problem. I don't have proof that the bottles were fake or that the shop knew they were selling fake bottles, so identifying the shop could be doing them an injustice. However, I recognize that by not naming the shop, I broadly impugn all online shops. So what to do? The real lesson I wanted to share was that fake bottles might turn up not only at auctions, but also at reputable shops. And if fakes were sold by the large, well-known and reputable online shop that I dealt with, then fakes could be at any other shop, too, online or brick-and-mortar. Buyers are naturally on their guard for fakes at an auction, but may not be expecting fakes at a shop. The experience I shared has taught me to be wary in both situations. However, it's a calculated risk. I still buy bottles at auction and have had good experiences. But if I see a newly-released whisky come and go and then come back again, I'll pass. Also, some online shops sell old and rare bottles, and I now pass on those, too. I've bought some of those older bottles, and their contents have never been within the range of what one would expect. In addition, I've seen rare bottles sold at auction suddenly show up at an online store a month or two later. Is the shop bottle the same one that recently sold at auction? If so, are the bottle's contents unchanged? This seems like a bad bet to me, so I now pass on all rare bottles sold at shops.

    I recently started a channel about whisky, doing reviews and talking about the story of each distillery, and for my purposes the miniatures are an amazing option to have enough material to post, since I can't yet afford to buy 5-8 bottles of whisky/gin a month... I'm keeping the miniatures in my drawer, but believe me, they won't sit there for long so I'm not worried about the cardboard ruining the taste :)

    I am pretty new to whisky, I am a wine drinker. I love your videos, there are very informative. I am interested in whisky for the product and can't stand this idea of "collecting" it. I don't get the point. If it's for speculating, then the whisky collectors are the enemies of the whinsky lovers because they're the reason the price go up! If it's for having plenty of unopened bottles (like by many people, as far as I see) it's plainly stupid and must be assessed by a shrink (no kidding). Well, it's an industrial product, and I have zero trust in industries. Enjoy your whisky people and as you say Ralfy : don't take it too seriously, it's a luxury product and is meant to have pleasure and some fun.

    Speaking of Not collectable but nevertheless interesting whisky, I found a couple of bottles of Cutty Sark Prohibition Edition bottled at 50% and Non-Chill Filtered. Single Malt: Glenfiddich 12, Glenmorangie 10. Blended Scotch: Sheep Dip, Shackleton Blended (light blue label). Bourbon: Four Roses Small Batch (the single barrel is supposed to good as well), Henry McKenna 10.

    • @StreuB1
      @StreuB1 6 років тому

      I took floydian06's advice and looked online for those brands. I found that Glenmorangie makes a 4 bottle tasters pack. I looked online at Binny's and they had them instock for $30 which I felt was a good value. I watched a few of Ralfy's videos on Glenmorangie and then last night, I decided to swing over and pick up one of those packs. I also grabbed (2) Glencairn glasses that they had for sale as well. So, this evening I think I might be trying single malt for the first time. I am a bit apprehensive because I have no idea what to expect. I am keeping an open mind though.
      When I was at Binnys, I looked over the entire selection they had for the better part of 40 minutes. Saw many names that I recognize from Ralfys videos and got an idea in my head of price points. Glenmorangie Original and Glenfiddich are quite affordable to my surprise as well as many others!!

    Ralfy, any thought on intentionally ageing a whisky in porcelain to get that mineral patina? I remember you did a video about ageing whisky in a tiny oak cask, and one about rescuing bad whisky (dropping a charred oak stick in the bottle, if memory serves, adding honey, and so forth.)

      To a point. Diageo is going to refire the operation there, as well as port ellen and I believe brora as well. While it will take a while to renovate and longer still to get a decent whisky from the place it will be available again. The quality of the newly produced spirit may not be what it used to, but buy it now and sell it soon if that's your angle.

      You mentioned ceramic decanters as sometimes having a positive effect on whisky, and it reminded me of something here in Taiwan. Gaoliang (sorghum distillate) that is kept in ceramic decanters increase in price the longer they are stored because it is believed to add to the flavor and mellow out what is initially quite firey spirit. Plus the decanters tend to be quite ornate. Just thought you'd like to know.
