I love seeing Jed, Byron, Gene and Devin all together, interacting and sharing their thoughts in this wonderful interview. This is the behind the scenes stuff I've missed all these years. Delighted to see their wonderful chemistry and friendly banter. Precious.
Youre so damn right. Its so fucking incredible how much bandwith devin has and has developed in all those years. Hope he will continue doing shit for ages.
Have you started listening to the podcast yet? If not, get on that! It's on his official channel. He analyzes his development over the years brilliantly, album by album.
4:40 there is a dynamic between a rock solid drummer and a lunatic guitar player that makes its own stereo picture, the drummer acts as a foundation that is so dependantly reliable that enables the guitarist to get so far off of the beat but have everything stay together, but that always land on the one together, it's magical
VIVA was open minded... Also the only footage of the crazy Iced Earth DVD Alive in Athens was shot by VIVA for a special and was dug out years later for the DVD
He says that they looked for a spot that resembles the one in Canada, where the band was filmed introducing themselves. But i agree, it has this funny 90s vibe to it
Well, those auto-generated English subtitles are super clear and not cryptic in the slightest! _"Devin Townsend is the Arkansas is a sign thus dis Amanda appointed entertainers and of youth except Marcel's Nam flag a mock tuba have a Lesseps Lamar taktik except on the swing"_
Man I wish I had friends who were into the metal scene in the late 90's. If I had any I would've been able to see an early Strapping Young Lad, Death's Chuck Schuldiner, and Dimebag Darrell. By the time I did have friends in the metal scene Chuck and Dime were dead and Strapping had broken up a year prior. The only good thing that came out of it was that I got to experience Ziltoid hot off the press at age 17. As a result that album heavily influenced my music tastes more than it would have normally had I gotten into the scene earlier.
Most people are scared to leave their town it seems. Literally every real person I've ever met is a metal head. I've never met someone who had integrity that didn't like metal music. Literally Not one person. So in my 43 years of life I have learned that anyone who says they hate metal music have no integrity at all. These phonies go home and are closet metal heads.
Gene was already a beast back then... Awesome drummer! And... I think Devin watched too much Benjamin Buttons... He seems to grow younger... I mean wtf
Lol he'd already been in Dark Angel, Testament and Death at this point, and almost replaced Lombardo in Slayer right before he took the SYL job. Pretty funny that you look at that pedigree and use the word "already".
Foriegner's are still trying to work out what, "Strapping Young Lad' actually means, lol. Probably think it's some sort of reference to bondage or similar. "Lad is boy, und strapping is, like, ahhh, whipping, I see...."

Gene Hoglar, lol
We never knew...
ahahahhaha
Hey sometimes you forget your own name man
Haha Hoglar
Gernan version)
I love how much of a rock star Gene Hoglan is.
but did he pronounce his last name like 'Hoeglorp'? not at all how I thought his last name was pronounced
What an incredible and rare video.
Just great.
I met Devin at this period for an interview in France. Great souvenir.
Thx for sharing
His vocals have really matured.
They're better technically, but more restrained. Live he is a monster now though
He is a God
Smoking so much weed held his voice back for years.
@@rocket_skates-mj Touring with SYL-style vocals didn't help either.
Wow Devin looks hurting. He is so much healthier now. But man what music came out of his suffering.
What the fuck are you dribbling on about??? 😂😂😂😂
Yes this was a very dark and turbulent time for him
Actually Devin was doing ok around this time. It was the infinity era where his mental health was in jeopardy.
BUT!? Hurting = Great Art!? ..a fact :-(
@@jointhefuture Why?
I would love to see more videos from this era

Shit... This is gold. Just look at the progress this man made. Infinite Awesomeness.

Byron shouting out Kyuss makes this even better holy shit

Im worried this will happen to me
And it happened to me. 😫
It's happening to me :(((
I'm currently not giving a fuck anymore and growing a skullett! Haha!
Reminds me of my teenage time, love you all
Dev's speaking voice sounds different here, like lower - but his stage vocals are always killer
Damn, those concerts looked like a blast.
Does anyone have full footage of those?

This is amazing.
Wow thanks for sharing this was awesome.
Wow Devin was super different back then.
Its strange seeing devi with hair lol
Joshua Berthelot He handled his balding crisis like a fucking boss, cracking jokes as it’s literally falling out on camera. He’s my role model.
You can see in this vid that his hairlines receeding and he's balding.
He was my age here, I couldn't imagine balding like that at this age lol.
It was definitely holding him back lol.
Drizzle hell is my favorite syl song! Heavy was a awesome album!
5:56 so it just got real
Devin "you know what I mean" Townsend
Awesome!!!!!
I feel so fortunate to have seen them at the Starfish.
Jesus Townsend was a nutcase in strapping
Such enraged music but really nice guys. Fuck yeah.
If only SYL played on MTV in the states.
It was too heavy for Mtv at that era and europe was more open to that music at that time and.... mmm always LOL
VIVA was open minded... Also the only footage of the crazy Iced Earth DVD Alive in Athens was shot by VIVA for a special and was dug out years later for the DVD
Man, this show looks pretty cool.
LOL at Gene Hoglar and Dev running around in a speedo!
Gene Hoglan, not Hoglar.
I know that, you obviously missed the joke sir.
they were ahead of it's time
Sweet devin townsend.
0:30 why is this guy sitting in the middle of the road in some random suburb?
Video content was so weird in the 90s lol
He says that they looked for a spot that resembles the one in Canada, where the band was filmed introducing themselves. But i agree, it has this funny 90s vibe to it
I dunno, a German guy, sitting on a street in Vancouver? It just makes sense for the 90s lol
Once lived nextdoor to Mr Simon's mom in law. He
Gave me strapping C.d. bin hooked since.
Thanx much Jed " so long ago!

Rocking oot!!!!
Man, they are such regular chill Vancouver guys. Stoked on metal. Love it.
@S S definitely picked that up over the last 11 months lol! but thanks for clearing it up
@@arekhautaluoma4276 lol you were still wrong over the last 11 months
Wow Devy with hair! Amazing
I particularly apreciate the random Satan's appearances during the clip, like half second of pain and then coming back to Devin's chills
Time makes fools of us all.
Naw just kidding this is awesome
Ahhh, the beginning of the infamous skullet
"Oh man...this is a sad moment in metal history" - Jed Simon

I had no idea Marky Mark spoke German.

6:29 That Python reference was the icing on the cake

Jay from Clerks
Devin looks like the first Corey Taylor mask.

Wow that Morbid Angel video was brutally fast. Hope Jed wasn't waiting too long for those 4 seconds.
Gene was already a beast back then... Awesome drummer! And... I think Devin watched too much Benjamin Buttons... He seems to grow younger... I mean wtf
He had already been a pro drummer for about 15 years by this point man. Talking about him like some newbie
If you think that's when he became a beast you neeeed to listen to Dark Angel Darkness Descends hahah
Lol he'd already been in Dark Angel, Testament and Death at this point, and almost replaced Lombardo in Slayer right before he took the SYL job. Pretty funny that you look at that pedigree and use the word "already".
It's like as if they were Type O Negative, only on threefold of drugs of what TON could be expressed as!
"Gene Hoglar" LOL!!!
Is that brad Pitt?
yep
wow a Spanish mark Walberg
vhs makes avatar out of him
I wanted to like this but it is sitting pretty at 666
the beginning of the skullet. poor devy losing his hair.
Young hairy devy was the best comedic devy. Blad devy came around and still is funny.
5:20 little did he know that QOTSA would come kick Kyuss in the ass
most singers turn bad with time.... devin did the opposite
