Riyoko's channel: youtube.com/@riyopiano website: riyoko.jp Here Riyoko is performing a live one-off sight-read improvisation on 'Ultramarine Blue' by Shinji Tanimura (RIP 1948-2023) from the score of the original ua-cam.com/video/kS3ytm73P9Q/v-deo.html with vocals. In my opinion, Riyoko has created a piano masterpiece here and it was recorded months before the original artist passed away, making it a very unique tribute. It's easy to glance at Riyoko in a random video clip and dismiss her as just a "piano girl trying to look cute", but not everything in life is as it seems at first glance, under the surface that's a unique piano virtuoso with a very broad skill set, not a "piano girl". This performance was recorded in December 2022 (or January 2023) at MZES Tokyo (copyright holder, I don't own any rights to this recording), playing a restored World War II era one-of-a-kind Kawai "Majestic" grand piano prototype. Riyoko has prepared about a dozen of wonderful originals for 2023: ua-cam.com/video/PJdCXuHUVbg/v-deo.html (Riyoko's live 2023 originals compilation) and here's 2 hours of beautiful improvised piano by Riyoko: ua-cam.com/video/q4XHwaUuqeU/v-deo.html for you to enjoy. Riyoko is a full-spectrum improviser and she does have crazy contrasting dramatic improvisations like this sonic rollercoaster: ua-cam.com/video/gm0JnGpRR1o/v-deo.html for you to experience. At this point we all know that Riyoko is an amazing live artist and even though I prefer live versions of nearly everything Riyoko has recorded on the albums, I still own all of Riyoko's discography going back to 2009 and urge everyone to grab Riyoko's albums to help support this magnificent independent artist. Where to buy Riyoko's albums: www.allaboutjazz.com/musician... where I maintain BUY links Alternatively, you can use some eBayer that deals with Japanese exports, my go to is www.ebay.com/str/keyprojectjapan Riyoko is a complete artist (compositions, interpretations, improvisations, technique, etc. - you name it she's got it) and very hard to evaluate based on a limited sample size. Since I've been featuring Riyoko on my channel for about a year, I've received a wide range of feedback about her, ranging from critiques of her ("lack of") musicality to mistaking her improvised playing for a practiced/learned performance of a classical musician. Riyoko's own experience is the complete opposite, since she doesn't try hard to impress and doesn't show off (outside of her own live shows with experienced supporting cast). Add in the fact that Japanese live footage is very rare (due to their customs and copyright laws). Riyoko certainly has several gears and the only way you get to see Riyoko's higher gears is live. I lost track of all the Japanese comments I've got on my videos of Riyoko along the lines of "Wow! I also watch her on TV but this is different!". When she performs requests of early morning mellow waking tunes on TBS's 'THE TIME' TV show, some people assume she "has no skill". There even was a high-profile incident in September 2023, where someone on Japanese social tagged out entire TV station and slandered Riyoko, basically saying she has no business being on TV because she has no skill and the only reason she is there is because of her looks - to put it mildly. This performance is one great example where Riyoko's interpretive abilities, improvisation, musicality, and performance come together and shine. Riyoko is a world-class Japanese Jazz pianist and composer who isn't bound by a single genre or style and has crossed classical, traditional Japanese, pop, EDM, and anime genre boundaries and styles in her compositions, arrangements, and performances. She's a classically trained prodigy and has been playing piano since age 4 and for well over 3 decades, latter 2 of which she dedicated to Jazz. She's renowned for her musicality, deep harmonic understanding, live performances full of energy with fluent improvisations, and delicate touch on the keys. Together with her talent and charming character she continues to proliferate Jazz and attract many fans from all over the world. You can learn more about Riyoko and sample more of her music from playlists on my channel home. Riyoko doesn't really make short clips of her music and a lot of her music and performances are missing from her own channel due to Japanese copyright laws, where venues own all the rights to recordings on their premises. Because of that Riyoko can't freely share a lot of her music with us. But an artist like this should be shared with the world, so I'm making it rain on my channels.
This may be my favorite piece I’ve heard her play. I just love this so much. Will be a multiple listening experience ❤ Also noting , she appears to have both hands as dominant in her playing. A truly gifted artist. Yet another edit. This fu🌷king blows me away.
This is also one of my favorite solo piano performances by Riyoko. It's an older upload I had sitting unlisted for a while. I wanted to fix-up the sound level and re-upload but since I still can't upload anything on UA-cam for 48 hours now, I just let it go as a test without notifications but people still found it. If you like solo piano, I have a playlist of just Riyoko's solo piano here: ua-cam.com/play/PLFHWS95Y95wux2K2tV9GUNgjlzBzu9JWE.html and I have one whole solo piano show I still have to parse from earlier this month. Out of respect to the venue that is still selling streaming access to it, I still haven't done anything with it and won't until sometime in April. I believe I read in an interview that Riyoko said that she trains both hands independently, that's why she can play different characteristic things on either hand at the same time. There are even some older home performances going back a decade where it's very apparent: ua-cam.com/video/hJ3-IU2lF9k/v-deo.html
She looks like a cosplayer in this video. Exploding intro. Theme 1 sounds like a classical piece. Theme 1 and Theme 2 is a bit like Rzewski's 'The People United Will Never Be Defeated' The Jazzy transition literally fits, it's like going through the phases of piano music genres.
This one is one of my favorites from Riyoko's rare solo piano performances. Like you mentioned, it has a lot of different styles, themes, and moods alternating, plus it's one-off improvised performance based on orchestral score.

@@LogioTek Thank you for sharing all of the links. I’ll do a deep dive into them when I can put aside some quality time to relax and enjoy them.

@@LogioTek I love it as well.
It sounds great, just like all the other stuff that she played
