Thank you very much for watching.
About 10 years ago, I heard Itzhak Perlman's Chaconne and was fascinated by it. The original piece is a solo violin piece, so there are quite a few parts that would be reckless to play on the koto, but I wanted to play it myself, so I managed to record it.
It is a very famous and wonderful piece, and I am sure there are many interpretations.
It is a piece that I would like to continue performing throughout my life.

Brava..!!

I cannot imagine how deeply you need to know the music to be able to retune the instrument on the fly. Amazing.
I can't speak for her, but as a koto player, what we normally do if we have to quickly change the bridge position during a piece, is during setting up, make a small chalk mark (on the sound board) at the point we need to move the bridge to. It is surprisingly accurate, because even if the strings tighten or slacken due to temperature, as they are all the same thickness, they all adjust by the same amount.
@@IfUfindthisURlost That's fine once, but all the time?
I bet Bach would absolutely have loved this, so interesting hearing what the instrument does for example in the broken chords and bringing out the harmonies so beautifully.
I felt that the Chaconne was fully adapted to the koto and to your playing. Bach would be proud of how well you brought out the core intent of the composition!
This is so impressive on many levels. To interpret, you have to know the piece intimately, and there is a lot to remember, lots.
And the sheer physicality of it. That instrument seems designed to wreck a person's back, yet she danced around it with lightness and focus.
Thank you for your work and dedication. And thank you for sharing with us.
Lovingly performed and faithful to the original. Your technical mastery of the koto is on full display. I really enjoyed the performance. Thank you for sharing this video.
The rhythm at the beginning already is far from what Bach wrote.
She is amazing! Wow!😮 Moving the bridges while playing would be so hard to master.
Yes, imagine any other instrument, other than the human voice, that you can tune and re-tune on the fly, so to speak. Truly mind boggling virtuosity, that.
All you need is Bach, artists in love with music, complex instruments they play and ears to listen.
Your soul connects with its homeland and a new life begins ❤
This work by Bach is just one of the highest points of human achievement, and this performance shows that. Humans do terrible things, but a few of them can also do things like this, this woman is a marvel. This is just unreal virtuosity and musicianship.
Bach sat down and wrote this entire piece in his head! Let that sink in.
One of?? What is higher than this?
@@marcossidoruk8033 I absolutely LOVE this piece by Bach, and this particular interpretation of it on the koto. Nonetheless, I think there are human achievements which might rival it, e.g. Einstein's theory of relativity or Rembrandt's paintings or some works by Shakespeare or Tolkien, Brahm's piano concerto no. 1 in D, ......
@@bilbodw None of those things come even close to 1% of this. Especially the works of Shakespeare and Tolkien wich are MASSIVELY overrated, there are far, far better writiers out there.
And seriously, did you just compare this with Brahms concerto 😂😂😂. Don't make me laugh.
Many thanks to the cameraman for cutting out of the scene, for most of the time, the most interesting things to see. What a genius.
If the performer's facial expressions are not the highest priority for you, then may I humbly suggest that you may not have a very interesting perspective on the musical arts.
@@dzhaughnne he means what she is actually doing when she is playing the instrument...
@@dzhaughnne You are insane. Watching her perform on the instrument is what's important - not her facial expressions. Not her dress.
shut up and enjoy
@@alvarobelevan Hey calm down ok? Take a cold shower
Bach wrote music - he left it to us to play it - even on instruments he never knew about (and even those we still haven't invented...)
Unbelievable beautiful - she is not only able to play this complicated piece - she can also tune the instrument while performing, just beyond this world. I have heard this chaconne being played by many artists and also on unimaginable instruments and all of them where up to this monumental piece of music. I got to know this chaconne not before I was in my 80s - I am thankful that I didn't die before that happened,
When you say 'tuning' are you referring to Ms. Kimura placing her fingers on the other side of the bridge and pressing the string down?
That would just be temporarily bending the string to get chromatics.
That is often done to get vibrato, but in this case, it allows her to tune the 25 strings to a single key, and then bend the notes for any chromatics needed in the score.
UPDATE: Sorry, you are correct, I see that she is moving the bridges as the piece progresses!

Sublime! Bach transcends all boundaries, your artistry commands the utmost respect, Bravo!
She is a national treasure❤❤❤
The runs of 16th notes are handled beautifully. Masterfully nuanced playing. Changing key on the fly by depressing the string of shifting the bridge is also a wonderful demonstration of proficiency of the musician.
Mesmerizing. Hypnotic. Magical, Beautiful.
Thank you.
Wonderful. Very moving. Bach himself would be amazed. Greetings and love from Korea.
One of the greatest Bach interpretations. Very deep, passionate and very baroque. Rhythm and Notes inégales are marvelous.
...a trip to God. Thanks to Johann Sebastian and to you for this great rendering..
Just amazing! Your performance and creative artistry brought me to tears. Thank you.
Love ❤ love ❤ love this! Thank you for the hard work and inner beauty that moves through your playing. Arigatou gozaimas ❤
It’s more than wonderful, perfect mastery and above all heavenly musicality !!!! Bravissimo !!!!!
I can't believe what I just saw 😮🙏
Absolutelly wonderful! one of the best musicians ever listened. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Amazing, one is transported to a recollection of Lute and Harpsichord timbres... yet this is unique. Your rubato and dynamic sense are superb, even invoking the ponticello and tasto of the original violin manuscript (BWV 1004). Your roaming intonation and tuning changes/string depressions are a sight to behold! Bravo Maestra.

Spellbinding adaptation and performance. Brava!
We all Love Bach just like you do !
Bach is universal.
Applause!
I am surprised that it is possible to play Bach on the Koto.
Kimura-san is truly a high master of her kind.
Why? His music is transcribed by now to almost all kind of instruments, this by the way actually written originally for violin, may even be known for most people as either a classical guitar or piano showcase piece. I wouldn't even be surprised, if I saw a kazoo transcription by now!
@@1corinthians15.1-4kjvHe is surprised because the koto has technical challenges when playing polyphonic music like Bach. You may notice her moving tuning blocks frequently so that she is set up for certain passages. She is also bending strings to get certain pitches. Yes, everybody knows this is part of Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin. It’s literally one of the most famous violin pieces in the repertoire. Playing it on classical guitar is a much more straightforward matter because the guitar has fixed frets - you can just about play it on guitar right off the violin score.
A flawless performance of one of the greatest masterpieces in musical history!
Maestra Kimura Maya-san has opened a whole new world of beauty in her stunning, incredibly expressive and heart-felt performance of this epic Bach classic on the Japanese koto.
It seemed like the music organically came up from the earth itself through her koto.

Extraordinary and quite unique. Maya, the solemnity and virtuosity with which you interpret this pinnacle of musical creation is simply outstanding. I had the great privilege of meeting you in Mexico City some years ago. You have certainly developed into an accomplished artist. Congratulations.
Amazing. It never occurred to me that something like this could exist but I'm so glad it does. Thank you!
This remains one of the few most amazing things I have seen ever.
What else are we going to see ?! Chaconne moved all kinds of instruments, viol,a cello, double bass, piano, cembalo, harp, 2 cellos, 4 violas, violin-cello, mandolin, guitar, some unknown homemade instruments, and now this ! That is what I call eternal music. Maya is doing great , I wonder why can't she adjust it so she can play it sitting. Hope her back does not hurt.
Thats what i saw too her back is gonna hurt, anyway amazing instrument
Yes!!!! When the last measure was about to sound, the single D note was the greatest one of them all, and especially the way it sounds on this instrument. And I think it summarises the singularity Bach experienced. The divinity he was so commited and thankful to. That this whole piece with its extraordinary grandiosity, just ending on a single whole note. Beautiful rendition!
listened to a talk discussing how Bach is 'about' the harmony achieved by the combination of differing voices, something easy to understand in a string quartet or orchestra, but harder perhaps on a single instrument. But here there are so many different textures, tempi, dynamics one can really hear different voices brought vividly to life.
Yes, to me that's one of the amazing geniuses of Bach, that he can make a single instrument sound like many.
Yes. There is clear yet subtle dividing line between the mere virtuoso and the consummated musician. Sound is music's matter, not its living form or soul.
@@klausehrhardt4481 virtuosity leaves you with admiration for the skill of the player, while consummate playing admiration for the piece and sometimes a feeling that the piece has a life independent of its playing or the piece or yet music but has become a quality of your thought.
Wow! This was truly something! Thank you and congratulations
This piece sounds so natural. Like it was made for it. Sounds a lot like the baroque lute
Amazing! I hope to see you live one day!
Mind blowing ❤

Absolutely magnificent 🙏🏼 all the best from Central America - Costa Rica 🇨🇷- 🎵🎶
Unbelievable. Such an achievement for you and your instrument.
Planet earth has millions of guitarists who need to watch this. lol
It's totally worth to listen til the last note, simply mesmerizing!! Well done....bravo!!!
Standing ovation🎉 freaking amazing musician.
WOW! Once again, proof of the universality of Bach's creations. A piece originally written for violin or lute now played on an instrument native to a land on the other side of the world from Bach's homeland.

Marvelous what you have played here. Thank the Great Spirit that you heard Perlman’s recording of this - so that you have made this great work part of yourself. That you have shared your current vision of it with us now. Please keep growing with it and share with us your rediscoveries of it as you keep learning. May the wind be ever at your back. 🙏🏼🪷☮️🪷

Bravissimo Maya!!!
Extraordinary! Your mastery is just stunning!
Incredible performance on an instrument that is incredibly difficult to play.
respect from China!
Amazing!
i like these decent vibrato 🙂
how could this not be an example of Peace on Earth?
Words in any language cannot describe the amount of beauty in this performance. I imagine anything by Bach is quite difficult to arrange for Koto let alone performing it, and yet you did both flawlessly. You are a wonder my dear, bravissima 💐🌺❤️🌺💐
She is Making a sound through her own will ! It was impressive and astonishing.

Never knew the Koto could modulate into different keys. Wonderful!
The traditional Koto has only 13 strings and often tuned to a pentatonic scale.
The instrument that Ms. Kimura is using appears to have 24 or 25 strings, which could be 2 octaves if tuned chromatically. If a fully chromatic bass is not needed, she could get more range in the higher register.
UPDATE: I had only seen the first minute when I commented above. Someone else mentioned her 'tuning' the koto, but I see that she is bending the notes to get some of the chromatics, so that means she might even have 3 octaves, and bends to get the more infrequent accidentals.
Dang, further on I see that she is moving the bridges and indeed retuning the strings as she plays!
Not a well tempered clavier, yet she made it😮. She simply recreated Bach. Wonder what the old man would think of it. Yet that's the beauty of tones: the exact pitch is not a condition for us to grasp them imaginatively.
Wow! Interesting!!! I never would have thought of a western work of such virtuosity being played on a non-western instrument. This is amazing! Excellently done!!!
