Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power episode 4, the show that seemed so long it actually managed to beat She-Hulk going shopping for a suit. How is that even possible?! This review almost broke me, something that has not happened since Wheel of Time episode 7 but I think you can witness my decline by the end lmao. But what did you think of the show or the parts you saw in the review? Let me know your thoughts down below and as always, thanks for watching :)

Friend, how you maintain the energy to cover this shite is one of the eternal mysteries. RoP is HORRIBLE, and not in any sort of fun or jaw-droppingly insane way, such as was the case with Halo in e1 and its routine denial of physics whenever the script writer thought she could jolt you.

@@admontblanc Yeah, in the books. We can't know who sinks Numenor in this show, nor why will they do it, nor who's indirect fault it is, nor when it will happen, since this show can't take stuff directy from the books, and even if it could, it probably wouldn't because the showrunners are too narcissistic and are convinced they will do a better job than JRR Tolkien. In the books Numenor was sank by Eru Iluvatar because Sauron outplayed the Numenoreans and convinced them to go attack Valinor and sacrifice their children to Morgoth (Numenor had weary of producing braincells during Pharazon's rule, therefore that happened).

The fall of Numenor deals with the theme of mortality and humanity’s desire to overcome it. We see this in the Numenoreans rejection of the Valar and envy of the elves. It is a key theme of the epic of Gilgamesh, so it’s safe to say it’s pretty timeless. Amazon, in their infinite arrogance, have decided that any mention of the Valar should be avoided on pain of death and the Numenoreans envy of the elves should instead be turned into modern day xenophobia. They have taken a timeless story and turned it into a modern day, American, political issue. This show is cultural vandalism

I mean it's not an adaptation of some random fantasy books, it's Tolkien, it's so sad to see such a fantastic fantasy universe that he literally spent his life creating being turned into some political propaganda garbage about things like immigration. Elrond has super sonar hearing and super eyesight to eavesdrop while standing beside a waterfall but soldier elves cant see an entire forest be torn down from a watch tower.
We see Galdriel, on screen, warrior princess her way through several soldiers who were otherwise surrounding her. Then, the camera goes off her briefly, the camera returns to her and all the soldiers are lined up perfectly like ducks in a row running into the cell.
Where the hell did Arondir get a bow, arrows, and an elf blade? Why would dark elf guy give his weapons back that would result in more orcs being killed, which we just saw him crying over a few scenes before?

Tolkien was a master linguist and it is tough for anyone with decent brains to imitate his writings let alone these clowns from Amazon. Ten-years old can write better than them ffs.
Just take a look at these dialogue comparisons:
"The world is indeed full of peril and in it there are many dark places" vs "The skies are strange".
"Get thee gone, and take thy due place" vs "You have not seen what I have seen".
"It is said by the Eldar that in water there lives yet the echo of the Music of the Ainur more than in any substance that is in this Earth; and many of the Children of Ilúvatar hearken still unsated to the voices of the Sea, and yet know not for what they listen" vs "The sea is always right". Jeez…….

The dialogues in the show are ATROCIOUSLY bad in comparison, most of the time they don't even make any sense, the characters talking are spewing nonsense (prime example Finrod's weird rock and boat in the prologue!), take any piece of actual dialogues between characters from Tolkien, and one will see that it's not only high souding, epic, but also has deeper meanings, important lessons, hell Tolkien came up with the whole proverbs and sayings of the peoples in Middle-earth!!
"Yet oft in lies truth is hidden"
"It's an ill wind as blows nobody any good ..."
"And All's well as ends Better!"
"The wolf that one hears is worse than the orc that one fears."
"But where the warg howls, there also the orc prowls."
"He can see through a brick wall in time (as they say in Bree)"
Even Orcs get one :). "Where there's a whip, there's a will" But actual dialogues of in one case a monologue of sorts are really something else:
"And Amandil, becoming aware of the purposes of the King, was dismayed and filled with a great dread, for he knew that Men could not vanquish the Valar in war, and that ruin must come upon the world, if this war were not stayed. Therefore he called his son, Elendil, and he said to him:
'The days are dark, and there is no hope for Men, for the Faithful are few. Therefore I am minded to try that counsel which our forefather Eärendil took of old, to sail into the West, be there ban or no, and to speak to the Valar, even to Manwë himself, if may be, and beseech his aid ere all is lost.'
'Would you then betray the King?' said Elendil. 'For you know well the charge that they make against us, that we are traitors and spies, and that until this day it has been false.'
'If I thought that Manwë needed such a messenger,' said Amandil, I would betray the King. For there is but one loyalty from which no man can be absolved in heart for any cause. But it is for mercy upon Men and their deliverance from Sauron the Deceiver that I would plead, since some at least have remained faithful. And as for the Ban, I will suffer in myself the penalty, lest all my people should become guilty.'
'But what think you, my father, is like to befall those of your house whom you leave behind, when your deed becomes known?'
'It must not become known,' said Amandil. 'I will prepare my going in secret, and I will set sail into the east, whither daily the ships depart from our havens; and thereafter, as wind and chance may allow, I will go about, through south or north, back into the west, and seek what I may find. But for you and your folk, my son, I counsel that you should prepare yourselves other ships, and put aboard all such things as your hearts cannot bear to part with; and when the ships are ready, you should lie in the haven of Rómenna, and give out among men that you purpose, when you see your time, to follow me into the east. Amandil is no longer so dear to our kinsman upon the throne that he will grieve over much, if we seek to depart, for a season or for good. But let it not be seen that you intend to take many men, or he will be troubled, because of the war that he now plots, for which he will need all the force that he may gather. Seek out the Faithful that are known still to be true, and let them join you in secret, if they are willing to go with you, and share in your design.'
'And what shall that design be?' said Elendil.
'To meddle not in the war, and to watch,' answered Amandil. 'Until I return I can say no more. But it is most like that you shall fly from the Land of the Star with no star to guide you; for that land is defiled. Then you shall lose all that you have loved, foretasting death in life, seeking a land of exile elsewhere. But east or west the Valar alone can say.'
Then Amandil said farewell to all his household, as one that is about to die. 'For,' said he, 'it may well prove that you will see me never again; and that I shall show you no such sign as Eärendil showed long ago. But hold you ever in readiness, for the end of the world that we have known is now at hand.'"
Hell even the simpliest line from appendices THE ONLY spoken line that they have for Second Age material :).
"And Sauron lied to the King, declaring that everlasting life would be his who possessed the Undying Lands, and that the Ban was imposed only to prevent the Kings of Men from surpassing the Valar.
'But great Kings take what is their right,' he said.
At length Ar-Pharazôn listened to this counsel, for he felt the waning of his days and was besotted by the fear of Death." (Appendix A)
It still sounds BETTER than anything written by the show because it's not artificial, the main problem with the writers of the show is that they TRY to sound epic and imitate the Tolkien high style but often just screw up basic logic of the sentence or just make it weird. I am more sad that they will never adapt this piece of speech of Sauron to the elven smiths of Eregion:
"Only to Lindon he did not come, for Gil-galad and Elrond doubted him and his fair-seeming, and though they knew not who in truth he was they would not admit him to that land. But elsewhere the Elves received him gladly, and few among them hearkened to the messengers from Lindon bidding them beware; for Sauron took to himself the name of Annatar, the Lord of Gifts, and they had at first much profit from his friendship. And he said to them: "Alas, for the weakness of the great! For a mighty king is Gil-galad, and wise in all lore is Master Elrond, and yet they will not aid me in my labours. Can it be that they do not desire to see other lands become as blissful as their own? But wherefore should Middle-earth remain for ever desolate and dark, whereas the Elves could make it as fair as Eressëa, nay even as Valinor? And since you have not returned thither, as you might, I perceive that you love this Middle-earth, as do I. Is it not then our task to labour together for its enrichment, and for the raising of all the Elven-kindreds that wander here untaught to the height of that power and knowledge which those have who are beyond the Sea?'"

That Adar scene with the funeral for the orc was just plain awful. Tolkien described orcs as hating everyone and everything, and hating themselves the most. No elf, no matter how 'dark' they supposedly are would ever show mercy to an orc. They're bitter enemies and have never worked together except for Maeglin at the Fall of Gondolin who was a traitor. Peter Jackson managed to capture this hatred perfectly with a simple funny scene in The Two Towers... "Looks like meats back on the menu boys!" Cannibalism is entirely fitting for orcs. Holding a funeral for one is not.
It amazes me how Amazon can consistently screw up every single scene in this show... Even the absolute basics of Tolkiens lore is wrong. It's like the show runners have never even read any of the books. Just jumped straight to the appendices...

There are a few things you missed in this review, like the reason Elrond was able to get to the hidden room with the mithril was because he heard Durin's children sing a song about exactly how to open it. How exactly he was able to figure out the significance of the lyrics is beyond me. It makes about as much sense as a foreign dignitary visiting the USA and listening to the president's kids sing _Ring Around The Roses_ in the White House garden, and using that to figure out the nuclear codes.

It's hilarious how mundane the Numenoreans are in the show though, these men are supposed to be greater than Aragorn on average! They should have great strength, endurance and all that, physically they are on par with the Elves both in terms of height and physical capabilities! :) Indeed her using magic would make way, way WAY more sense, hell there is precedent in the lore, in The Hobbit the Wood Elves used special enchantments, spells that put people TO SLEEP!!!! They could have used this as a sort of callback reference, in any case Galadriel in the show has no any of her canonic powers! Even her innate telpetahic mental powers!!! Which is totally weird, INSANE even, how are they going to explain her becoming a sorceress type...will they go the cliche, oh she received a ring and it's all from that?! Ughh such an oversimplification and dumbing down!
"They shouted and called: "Bilbo Baggins! Hobbit! You dratted hobbit! Hi! hobbit, confusticate you, where are you?" and other things of that sort, but there was no answer.
They were just giving up hope, when Dori stumbled across him by sheer luck. In the dark he fell over what he thought was a log, and he found it was the hobbit curled up fast asleep. It took a deal of shaking to wake him, and when he was awake he was not pleased at all."
      ...
"They wondered what evil fate had befallen him, magic or dark monsters; and shuddered as they lay lost in the forest. There they dropped off one by one into uncomfortable sleep full of horrible dreams, as evening wore to black night; and there we must leave them for the present, too sick and weary to set guards or to take turns at watching.
Thorin had been caught much faster than they had. You remember Bilbo falling like a log into sleep, as he stepped into a circle of light? The next time it had been Thorin who stepped forward, and as the lights went out he fell like a stone enchanted. All the noise of the dwarves lost in the night, their cries as the spiders caught them and bound them, and all the sounds of the battle next day, had passed over him unheard. Then the Wood-elves had come to him, and bound him, and carried him away."
      ...
" Consequently Thorin was angry at their treatment of him, when they took their spell off him and he came to his senses; and also he was determined that no word of gold or jewels should be dragged out of him." The Hobbit
If WOOD ELVES could do something like that, why not Galadriel who is one of the most powerful in those types of abilities! :)

There are two issues I have found in this series that completely ruin it. 1. The constant, strange mixture of under and over acting. Galadriel can't act and it hurts my skin. When she touched the palantir and was like "ahh my arm, that, that kind of hurt me". All the acting, bar maybe 1 or 2 is awful. I dont even want to get started on the orcs. The blue eyes. They're trying so hard to make white walkers from GOT. 2 and their scripts are just terrible. The things they say and how they say them is just making me sick 2. There is not enough variation of angles and you constantly feel forced into trying to be immersed rather than the writers and directors making it so you feel so.
I can't actually watch and focus. There's just far too many elongated shots of the same thing. They constantly try and include the dialogue in 1 shot between two characters. We are constantly basically shoved in the faces of the actors and forced to listen. The chemistry is god awful. The CGI is gradually getting worse. Even the tsunami destroying Numenor completely ruined it, but that unfortauntely was the highlight. Ardar, or the actor who plays him literally looks like Star wars character, I forget his name.
    Overall ?
Scripting is awful, variation of angles is awful and constant over or under acting makes this entire thing feel like some strange fan-made version of LOTR on a budget of £100,000 or less.

That running from orcs through the forest in slow motion scene was a ripoff from The Fellowship of the Ring when they were fleeing Moria after Gandalf's fall.
    Except...
In FOTR we had interesting, immediately memorable characters that everyone cared about. They were on a mission and just experienced combat with orcs, a cave troll and the sight of a Balrog, also a real tragedy having lost Gandalf, and they had to get Frodo, who was devastated seeing his long time friend fall , out of there while being shot at by orcs. So you can see why the epic, sad music and the slow motion worked.
Here we had: An elf who was sent to deliver a message through a chain of random, nonesensical events and some random dark elf's STUPID plan (giving him weapons and all that). The elf just RANDOMLY came across the Sauron blade boy. The boy who was in the village because of a STUPID plan to get food. The boy's mother who RANDOMLY came across them in a forest somehow... It's all just a random mess with forgettable characters that are impossible to care about.
And this show does this a lot - trying to inject epic music and slow motion to give a piece of crap a sense of grandure.

How English people behave now for example isn't the same as they behaved 2000 years ago. Also, orcs in second age were affected by sunlight which isn't a factor mentioned or alluded to in the Jackson's LOTR movies.

And, for God sak, who wrote this dialogues? A 6yo boy does it better. The biggest question here is: where they put the 1 billion budget? He continues to fight bravely, even after the second arrow. After the third he is kneeling and looking into the eyes of the uruk (Lurtz? Sp?) as he is drawing back his bow. Best parody ever! Such a pity that Leslie Nielsen died 12 years ago. He would be perfect cast for Celebrimbor role.

So here's something fun I found out according to certain sources it is estimated that for a boat to go from just Numenor to Valinor is around 40 days (This changes based on wind speed, tides etc). For context the world record for fastest rowing boat across the Atlantic ocean is just a round 29 days.
How does the timeline work in this show? Does anyone know how many days have passed? The problem is that they've set it up that time should flow the same for all the characters as everyone saw Mr Star man falling down. So was elf boy kept for several weeks while Galadriel sailed and than did her nothing sauce in Numenor?
To say this show is a mess is an understatement. I could go over the plot holes but I've seen swiss chess with less holes in it. But here's some basic ones to think about.
Why did Adar release him for a message? He clearly has ravaged plenty of villages before. He's also been stealthy up to now (huge ??? on stealthy with a massive trench) by building tunnels and a massive trench? Why if releasing him as a messenger do the orcs than attack said messenger? Want to explain how Adar has more compassion than Galadriel? How did mum, step-elf and son all converge on that location? Why did villagers not take food with them? Why did they trust 2 boys to carry back enough food to feed up to a hundred or more when they know orcs are around? If you can answer any of questions well done. Go and get hired by Amazon for the next season please.

The timeline has things that happened at the end of the 2nd age taking place before things that happened at the start and middle. We are going to have the equivalent of the D-Day landings before Hitler has even declared war on Poland.

Nobody trusted the two boys to carry back food, they snuck off to go back to town on their own

I liked the bit where they walked past two dead sheep on the outskirts of the village and don't even consider taking those back to the tower. Nah, we'll just go and look for more shriveled potatoes in town instead.

Galadreyl Skywalker be like: " I, too, can command the wind,! I have a hurricane in me that will strip Numenor bare if you dare to try me".

I have to admit, I thought you were joking when you first said you liked it better than She-Hulk. But by the end of the video, I believed you! Galadriel looked so disgruntled, like Applebee's messed up her burger again!! I don't know who would think she was likable. Anyway thank you for the review, I laughed a whole lot man. You looked so traumatized at the end. 🤣

How they gonna talk about “DAY TURK UR JURBS!” When Galadriel was the first elf on their shores in centuries?

True to the lore: "Secret or concealed doors are difficult to hide from half-elves, just as they are from elves. Merely passing within 10 feet of a concealed door (one hidden by obstructing curtains, etc.) gives the half-elven character a one-in-six chance (roll a 1 on 1d6) of spotting it. If the character is actively seeking to discover hidden doors, he has a one-in-three chance (roll a 1 or 2 on 1d6) of spotting a secret door (one constructed to be undetectable) and a one-in-two chance (roll a 1, 2, or 3 on 1d6) of locating a concealed door."

Tolkien devoted a large portion of his life to developing the mythical world of Middle Earth. He drew inspiration from his real life experiences of fighting in WWI, the close friendships he maintained through his love of literature even the love of his life, his wife Edith inspired the stories of Beren and Luthien and Aragorn and Arwen. During the making of the Lord of the Rings trilogy there were always copies of the books on set to be used as reference for the director and the actors, even to the last day of filming. Peter Jackson and almost everyone in a high level position had read the books, loved them and were very respectful of the canon and lore. The writing and dialogue in TROP is not anywhere near as interesting and at times is as they say, cringeworthy. There will always be an audience for bad television/cinema. Not everyone is able to appreciate a masterpiece. Many prefer a simple story with lots of violence and gratuitous sex and Hollywood is more than happy to oblige. TROP is bad storytelling with bad writing, way too much CGI, and way too little love of the lore. That a couple of 40 something producers would fail to understand the importance of canon and lore versus pc and wokeness doesn't surprise me at all, being offensive while feigning being offended is a characteristic of their generation. I had really hoped they would produce a show that, given the obscene budget, would have approached the quality of the books and the Peter Jackson trilogy. A lifetime to write the stories and a singularly epic success of turning them into cinema. That is why people who CAN appreciate a masterpiece love the books and trilogy and do not love TROP. We are not racists we are lovers of the lore. Have diversity in the casting, I'm fine with that. What I'm not fine with are people who resemble Romans with pointed ears....with Elven warriors wearing slightly modified football helmets....with "Our hearts are bigger than our feet!" hardly quote-worthy....Ugh! I don't believe I can bear 5 more episodes so I'm cutting my losses and skipping the rest. I sincerely hope that someone in the future, who does love Middle Earth, will try again. These are stories that need to be seen as well as heard because they are singularly epic mythology!
