I took an in person lesson from Mike about 10-15 years ago at age 60 after being out of bowling for 20+ years. My avg. went from 150s to 170s almost immediately. I'm now in my mid 70s bowling once a week with avg in 180s.

Let me share a TOP TIP in here for all of you: PRACTICE 1 thing at the time and repeat over 1,000 times. For example, if you want to improve your release, practice just that, 1,000 times. Don't think about anything else. Just focus on 1 thing until it becomes ingrained in your subconscious and your body learns the movement.

I'm 72 years old and have over 20 years of BAD habits. I've been lucky enough to maintain a 160+ avg. NOT GOOD ENOUGH. Never too old to learn new things. 'nuff said

What would you suggest for people on more time constraints? I could maybe get five full games of bowling in a week
Spent a good portion of my summer of practice last year working on this very aspect! You're right, Coach Shady, it's hard. What makes that funny is that it really is the easiest thing to do! Gravity will take care of getting the ball started. That, and a couple other things I was working on, brought my average up 10 pins this year. Not bad for being away from the game for 20 years!

Great tip! Basically, you’re saying “let gravity take care of the arm swing” and don’t muscle it.
That's how I'm understanding it.
But that's not easy for me to do because everytime I try to let the ball swing without grabbing the ball at the top. It falls off my hand and I have bad issue with squeezing the ball and I have a hard time creating any kind of ball speed and getting pin action. I got the revs in all and the ball fits my hand just fine. But speed though I need help with that can any of you guys give me a few tips on that?
@@travoncordova7798 Sounds like a grip issue. Have your pro shop fitter check your span and pitches and make some adjustments so you can relax the fingers and thumb.
@@travoncordova7798 it's possible that your thumb is drilled with too much reverse pitch. A lot of pro shops still favor using reverse thumb pitch since it gets the thumb out quicker (better for beginners). Unfortunately, once you learn to lighten your grip and your swing, you'll lose the ball in your back swing unless you use a lot of tape.
You might go to your Pro shop and see what your current thumb pitch is. If you have an extra bowling ball you don't use much, you could have them fill the thumb and re-drill 1/8" more positive.

I watched this video 8 times and then went to the lanes committed to practice this correctly. OMG, what a difference. I’ve never rolled the ball so effortless and I kept it up. First game was 121 and the last game was a clean 233. Will practice this for the next two days to ensure i have it down. I felt like a bowler for the first time in many years. Steve S.

Hey, I definitely remember Mike Shady. We bowled a PBA Midwest Regional at Hawthorne Lanes in Quincy Illinois. I started out with 636. Mike had 836. I've always had a hitch in that part of my swing, and it showed. I could never get rid of it. Thanks for the tip. If I didn't live on Maui, where there's NO bowling center, I'll practice that tip. I have changed from 5steps to 4 with the 24 rule’ it has helped me out so much, moved from a 165 to a 180 in the first 3 weeks of men’s league this year. Thank Coach Shady, do you think that 1 day you can talk about the V with the finger that you spread out on your ball and carry that before you snap your hand on release?
I always let the ball carry my back swing an feet slow an consistent an my avg.went up with the storm Hyroad from 172 to 195

I was always told I'd never be a good bowler only using two fingers. Now days I see a lot more of such bowlers. I bowled a 276 Sunday (with a house ball) with a friend. Now no way I can do that consistently but I can roll 210-230 consistently and I'd say that's pretty good.
My Son and I also bowl two fingers and we have a 180 avg, we both can bowl in the 200's and we're both consistent weekly.
Man I'm so nervous, starting my Bowling endeavor tomorrow..I gotta do it, I'm starting from scratch...let's Bowl!

With that average you should just focus on picking up spares and getting consistent strike ball hits so you leave less splits. Then you'll be a 200+ in very little time. Remember a game of all spares is around 200. Throw a few strikes in as well and you get 220+

I have a question . I have a new 15 lbs storm tropical surge. Im standing with my left foot behind the far left dot. Im right handed and I target between the secend and third arrows from my right. I had to move to two steps from the fowl line to slow the ball down and swing slower becouse I'm over powering the ball. ( I want more power ) so should I try to put more rotation on the ball so I can go back to being four steps away from the line. or put more traction on the ball by sanding it with a lower grit truecut . so I can put more of my stranth into it
I haven't bowled for 9 years but I had a high swing and bowled right handed re verse hook ( backup ) and use to stand at the back of the lane and run up the approach for 25 years.
You obviously never had a coach or friends who bowled seriously and tried to help you with your game. Many guys start out with unorthodox and bad forms (such as running from the back of the approach) but most guys, once they bowl more leagues and then tournaments, pick up advice along the way and begin bowling more seriously. Running is awful because although you generate a lot of ball speed, it is almost impossible to repeat shots and execute. Watch the PBA pros. Although the throw their balls at around 19 mph, faster than us amateurs, pretty much ALL of them creep up to the line in terms of their foot speed. They take slow, steady steps and their heads are dead level during the entire approach. Take a look and then see if you can make yourself slow down. It will help a lot. Also, you can't generate much rev rate throwing a back up ball, unless you are Anthony Simonson who is a very unique 2-hander.
I need to get the fear of dropping the ball on the back swing out of my head. My biggest problem is a tight grip with the thumb on the back swing and not relaxing my grip swinging forward. In turn I end up with sore middle/ring finger joints and a puffy thumb after a series.

On the 2nd "bad shot" Brock threw straight and flat at the 10 pin... In the magic shot he put a little wrist in it and got it to the 1-3 pocket..
Basically what they teach as 24 inches of magic, I teach by telling my students to keep the ball in front of your shoulder, not your chest. That way you can drive through the ball on your follow through.

These 24 inches have helped me and many others compete at some of the highest levels all over the country with some of the most talented athletes in this sport.
I set different hand positions to achieve different results on the lane. In this video I used the same hand position for all 3 clips.
The shot where I was really constricted...all muscled up. It resulted in slower ball speed and a slight tug left because I was squeezing. Yeah, my hand got around it. When you add all those things up, especially squeezing, that will happen. Muscle-ing it like that will not allow you to be free and loose. And thats why the ball actually hooked like it did.
The shot where it looked like i flat handed it, where I threw it faster, and the ball hit the 10 pin? I had the same hand position and tried to hit the same target. I was going so fast I missed right, had no idea where it was going, and because I was out of line in the 24 inch zone, my tilt, rotation, and rev rate were not right. I had no leverage, and no timing to get where I needed to be. Resulting in bad ball motion.
It is a feel thing mostly. If you watch closely at my setup, I actually setup the same way in all 3 different shots. I never moved a board and tried to hit the same target in all 3 shots.
The three different results you guys see is really what can happen if you get the 24 inches wrong!!!! Once you see it from this perspective i hope it helps you guys out some. Best wishes.

Great tip. Sometime I use it sometime I make the mistakes you mention. I still remember Mike and teammates on the log flume ride at Six Flags-Great America trying to get me as soaked as possible. Great times back then in 1985!
Of course with my failing memory, i don't remember whether Mike was a co-conspirator or just his Lacrosse teammates.
In relation the a free flowing swing, our foot speed needs to slowly accelerate as well. Basically try to emulate chris barnes' game and you will be a good bowler for a long time.

I have kind of went to a 2 handed approach more like jespers in the past few years where he has his arm already down and takes the push away out of it but maybe i should try to go back to the push away more like belmo again and see how it feels any opinions on jespers approach
How do you get a high back swing with the ball starting from such a low initial drop ? A true pendulum would only give a 45° back swing and slow ball speed, do you muscle it high ?
It’s in the drop. Like, grip the ball, but “drop” the weight of it and let your shoulder direct it back. A “properly” weighted ball (10% of your body weight or something like that, no higher than 16lb), will have the weight necessary to swing. Let your arm go with it and see what happens. Comments sections are hard to describe something that’s easier shown.

Don’t worry to much about high back swing, you may injure yourself. Everyone has different ranges of motion when it comes to joints and muscles. Bowl relaxed.
Higher backswing is achieved by tilting the spine forward. The swing is still effortless but the “pendulum” is effectively tilted with the spine as it moves forward. Accelerating the ball into the swing also works but is probably not consistent.
I had a level swing as I learned to bowl. One day I decided to tighten the thumb drastically with tape so I didn’t have to grip at all but still could rock the ball off of the fingers with a relaxed thumb. The ball finally felt weightless thanks to the tape.
I also worked on opening the shoulders to learn to play a bit more inside.
I recored myself and was astonished that my swing was nearly 90 degrees vertical. It felt like the ball went weightless into the swing and thats it. I never knew I was doing it until I watched the footage.
I showed my pro-shop operator (he is a coach) and he said it looked normal. Something about having more flexibility contributing to a higher swing.
I have tried to actually lower it and have gotten it to a more reasonable level over time.
The takeaway to have a higher swing is:
-low grip pressure because thumb is tight
-spinal tilt in the first bit of approach
-opening of shoulders to allow joints more range of flexibility
I bowled with grandkids first time in forty years. Scared them to death. Ball bounced a couple times and went straight down the middle. Made two strikes. But they thought I was going to fall a few times. A lot of drama in my swing now 🤷♀️

The vid is not perfectly clear on the point, but seems to be close enough to “get it”. Are we saying to push the ball out front 24” prior to, or in concert with, the first step? And that this will make gravity take over?

how would this work for a wheelchair bowler? I'm sure it is something simple but I really need help on arm swing at times
how do you hold onto to a heavy 15 lb bowling ball without excessively gripping the ball? My wrist immediately breaks as soon as I start my back swing.
go to a lighter ball if you cannot create a backswing and you grip the ball.
You can build up wrist strength by doing exercises, but in the meantime a lighter ball may be the best option just like Dylan said.
Also make sure the ball is drilled properly. Improperly drilled balls feel much heavier than a proper fit.
I dropped from a 15 lb ball to a 14 lb ball and have much better control
This is probably why my elbow and bicep are hurting lately. I'm not letting the ball fall free enough because I think I will lose speed if I do but even forcing gets me barely to 16mph. Ughhhh. I just need to relax and do a better free flow push away

@@scotty2221 swimming is great but it does not help you with bowling. You need to work out with weights 3 times a week after you lift weights you need a day or 2 for your muscles and ligaments to recover. A good exercise is to get a 20lb a 25lb and a 30lb dumbbell then use the dumbbells to bowl in slow motion. Do this on both arms. Then do one legged squats.

Because I suck big time I really didn't see a difference in either swing, or approach. 🤔 I also golf, and a great golf swing looks effortless just like bowling. Trying to explain how difficult both sports are to people is also very difficult
I am about Mr. Shady's size, have been bowling in leagues since 1979, and average in the upper two teens. I still bowl like I learned decades ago and am similar to the technique in this video - I pushaway when I start my approach. But a majority of bowlers today wait until after a step or two to begin their swing. I believe this gives them more hook, but I don't want any more so I have never tried a delayed pushaway. Maybe it is more accurate. What is Mr. Shady's perspective?
The pushaway in my game is SO key.I've always had "late timing".I'm a right handed mostly down and in "stroker"style.And a husky guy. 5'11"255 lbs.And 55 yrs old.
I learned from my(female)coach I had many years ago NOT to force the ball into it's swing.Like PDW and so many others do.I still try and roll the ball like I did back when it was straight urethane.But.I cannot play the shot I use to,out by the 5 board any more even with a mild reacting and drilled ball.The new stuff is SO aggressive.I'm almost tempted to get a "new technology" urethane to see how it works with my old down and in style.I use to typically stand about 15 and shoot about the 8 board with a little swing out to 5 ish and a mild reaction into the pocket.Now I'm standing with everything (obviously) adjusted about 5 left.And cannot play the big hook because of that muscle memory swing of the "old school" days.If I get too deep inside,say past 15 board I turn into Cpt.Chicken Wing. :- (
@@jeffbear3075 I am 5'9" 160lb and 63 and have always thrown 16 pounds. My style is to fling it as hard as I can, without losing accuracy, over the 7 board at the arrows. If its really slick the 6 or 8-11 if dry. I play relatively straight, my ball only goes a little right at the start. If I miss I want my ball to be light or too straight so I leave a 10, the easiest common spare in the book. I employ balls that hook just enough and aren't drilled to aggressive. My go to balls are the Storm Marvel Pearl and AstroPhysix.

This is why bowling is a "game" and NOT a "sport." Its like darts or chess in the sense that you need ZERO athletic ability, strength, or god givin talent/ abilities... Literally ANYONE can be good, if they understand the fundamentals and proper technique and then practice. I played college baseball and almost had an opportunity to go pro, that requried 20 years worth of playing, practicing tirelessly, lifting weights everyday, running sprints for 20 minutes every morning for speed and 2 miles every afternoon for endurance conditioning as well as countless other drills and exercises... BUT for the life of me I never have been great at bowling. A good friend of mine who is a great guy, but a below average athlete and the kind of bluw collar dude that drinks a 12 pack of PBR everynight, kicked my ass over and over the last time I played. FINALLY after the 2nd game where he smoked me 140 to 210, he explained that I was over muscling the swing trying to "throw" the ball hard and that the extra speed wasnt allowing the spin to work, suggested I "roll" the ball with a smooth pendulum motion (like putting in golf) and slowing down the speed so the spin could catch and break properly. After about 3 frames I was in the zone and hit 4 or 5 strikes in a row (which for me is amazing!) I'm 34 and have been bowling all wrong for about 30 years!!!
Bowling is an individual sport but not a solitary individual sport. Young athletes travel, train and compete together. In training, different age groups come together and benefit from each other and compete with each other.
How about superimposing the three motions with the others.

Mark Baker is the best bowling coach in the world!!
There's plenty of people out there who can coach...Bowling is an individual game with very few concrete standards. Mark Baker teaches from a leverage standpoint. Other teacher from a biometric standpoint. Mike Shady teaches from a finesse perspective of what constitutes the perfect physical aspect of the game. Some of what Mark teaches and I've met with him personally, some people aren't physically capable of doing. There are plenty of people who play the game at a top level and never played professionally. That's the same with coaches. Just because you played a sport on a professional level doesn't mean one's coaching abilities are on the same level as their playing abilities. What works for some people won't work for others but both people can compete at the exact same level.
@@jayvallandingham2406 Interesting response Jay. Of course there are plenty of coaches out there. How many can actually make a living at it? What kind of results do they get? I see the results Baker gets and for me there is no one better and more successful at it.

Nah the best kept secret is that if you're 2 handed, right handed and can't hit 10 pins practice throwing backup at them. My percentage went from around 40 to over 90 with about a month of practice. Also helps with previously incredibly difficult splits for right handers. ie: 2,8,10 and 4,10

You are tense all the way thru it...so 1st and foremost

I am not a pro but here's another great tip...the tighter the thumb hole you can roll your ball with the better your swing will be...get to a point where it
Finally hangs on your hand then take out a piece of tape (always use tape)...
and bowl...

I'm confused also. There are so many things going on with your body, during the walk or run up, the timing of the release, the point of contact of ball with floor, the amount you bend down, the position of your wrist at release., not mention probably 10 other things. This guys off his rocker, that first 24 inches has a small part on the success of the ball upon contact.

What, exactly, am I supposed to be looking at? Even with the overlay with the handy 24-inches specified... 24 inches from what to what? Then, all three approaches LOOK identical, in the video. This video is basically a bunch of words that sound like they might be helpful but presented in a complete nonsensical manner. Instruction does no good if we're not clearly being told what we are being instructed to do.
If the moral of the story is "let gravity do the work on the backswing", you would be much further off focusing on that point, in plain English.
It is approximately 2 feet, or 24 inches, from your push off ("pushing" the ball away from your body in front of you at the beginning of your swing) to just past your legs during your backswing. Your arm swing is just like a pendulum. Also, when you begin your swing, may sure that you "push off" towards your target.
