Daniel Gonzalez exactly. Church has lower conversion rate because many times they don’t try and make it. 7-10 is attempted ever time, because they’re just trying to hit 1 and get lucky.
I have one that actually works with one bowling ball. So here it is: You have to throw the ball at just the right angle upwards so it hits the ceiling panels causing one to fall off and bounce onto the pins.
I got one totally by accident when I was with my best friend at his Birthday party; I was around 13/14 years old. First time ten pin bowling, I just chucked the ball without a thought about what was going to happen, but the thing I remember more than making this shot was the people in the lane next to ours that were all wearing those bowling gloves and decked out in their kit just stopped and all four of them started clapping. I had no idea why until years later lol For anyone in the U.K it was at Bitterne Bowl in Southampton.
if the ball went in the gutter and popped out of the gutter and hit pins.. it's still considered a gutter. as cool as it might of been that you hit the 7 -10 split. technically in your case this wouldnt count in a game.. the score would be erased and a gutter would show.
When i was a kid my bowling coach spoke of another way to pick up a 7-10, he said you could hit the inside edge of either pin to send it outword toward the hard wall instead of the curtain and you had more of a chance to bounce the pin back across to hit the other pin. I never could do it, but i have seen him do it.
eric fortson I did something similar. I curved the ball into the gutter right before the pins. It hit the wall and bounced back into the lane hitting the 7 pin. The pin flew across hitting the 10 pin. I was honestly trying to do what your instructor said, but I put a little too much spin on the ball.
It doesn't surprise me that at least one person in the world got unusually good at them. Millions of people in decades. At least one grandpa with a chip on his shoulder and some time to think and practice could do it. It takes not only luck. It takes skill, and obsession. I think people discount that some of us are smarter than others. Some of us have better blood pressure. Some of us really are more dedicated even only looking at leaguers and pros. All of these factors can't just be washed away by watching videos. By obsession i mean getting it in your muscles. Getting 300 is supposed to be impossiblish bc of fatigue. The same things that turn 275, 285 scores into 300 would help with the 7-10. What you ate matters for a 300. That's technically randomness of your body chemistry staying equally alert but you can do things about it. And they said what, .o75%? 7 hundredths of a hundredth. Or in other words in 10,000 7-10s, 1 is going down at least. 100 frames is 10 games. A league/pro bowler should be able to get 20 games a week. 50 weeks a year. 1000. 10 years like that and you can do it. 40 years like that and if you tried to game the math you ought to have gotten it at least 4 times.
I've been bowling since I was four, and I somehow made this spare when I was seven. The ten pin bounced right off the back of lane (black part) and came back to hit the seven pin. I've never been able to do it again and it's been 10 years.
Seems like you have to do one of two things to have any chance, especially with the newer curtains: 1) Instead of aiming for a glancing blow on the outside where you'll land in the gutter, you should aim for a glancing blow on the inside of either pin instead, which is even more achievable since you can use spin to curve it in, the idea being to bounce the pin hard into the wall on the side and causing it to ricochet back, all in order to avoid the pin hitting the curtain and losing its kinetic energy there. 2) Hit the pin straight on with a fast throw, the goal being to achieve a double bounce as mentioned in passing in the video, where the pin hits the ball a second time after colliding with the curtain, regaining kinetic energy and bouncing unpredictably in one of any number of directions.
I've made it exactly once in about 20 years. I've almost made it many times, sending the 10 over towards the 7. For me, the idea is to hit the 10 on the LEFT side with as much speed as possible, so that the 10 hits the right sidewall, then the ball that's in the pit. The 10 will squirt over to the left after hitting the ball pretty consistently. Chances are still low, but getting the 10 to go left increases your chances greatly, as opposed to hitting the curtain which kills the speed off (which is what it is designed to do.)
yeah even in the footage thats more or less what happened. i don't know why they kept harping on about the back curtain. bouncing off the sidewall as long as you don't get the pin caught in the gutter has much more chance of success. the pin needs to bounce and get caught up in spinning like a top to maximise the chances of collecting the 7. so it helps if your rev rate can knock the pin to the right and add a little bit of a lift to clear the gutters lip so the pin makes it back onto the lane. i'm still not calling that easy. such a glancing blow to the side of a pin wont inject much energy but it's much more likely than using the backstop designed to kill momentum
@@MrOsmodeus I think the point is that banking off the curtain ensures that you pick up at least one pin where putting enough spin on the bowl and/or angling it to impact the side of the 7 or 10 pin carries a much higher risk of missing the pin entirely. That'd be the same as trying to get the ball to cut so hard that it goes into the gutter with enough speed to pop back out and catch a pin on its outer edge and likely a bunch of other crazy throws.
Roy Munson hit it back in ‘96 at the championships in Reno. He had been out of the game for 20 years and had this epic come back going head to head with the “Muhammad Ali of bowling” ‘Ernie McCraken’. Unfortunately Munson came up short in the epic match but he did hit the 7 10 split during competition. He did all this with a rubber hand over a hook mind you. He’s definitely the 🐐
a good one can. we just don't have robots that can dynamically analyze everything instantaneously but scientific advancement is pretty much engineered luck. like the rube goldberg machines
They forgot another method getting the 7 10 split, which im surprised they didnt mention. You can throw the ball hard into the gutter and hope it bounces back up into the side of a pin, which would slide it straight sideways into the other.
When I was like 8 my older cousin hit a picture perfect 7-10 split. The pin he hit flew perfectly sideways into the other. All the adults went a little nuts and us kids just sat there like "yeah that was pretty cool I guess"
Physics says that's not possible. For the ball to hit the 10 pin on the side so that it slide directly across the lane, the ball would have to come out of the gutter. If the ball goes in the gutter, it is a dead ball and any pin count is negated.
@@brownro214 guy that always plays bowling like its a pro match coming in here and trying to ruin someone saying they hit it because physics says its not possible. But remember physics has been proven wrong before. Technically there is always a chance even if it is 1 in several quintillion etc.
@@brownro214 I don't know what materials the sides are made of, but if he hit the inside of the pin in a way that it bounced off of the side to actually fly perfectly sideways, I guess it's possible
In order for a 7-10 split to be possible, the ball needs to hit the first pin with enough force and accuracy that it bounces off the back curtain and into the other pin. As of now, all other instances regarding a perfect 7-10 split have been made using this method. In order for the pin to fly sideways in the way you described, it would need to be hit nearly perfectly on its side. Theoretically, if the bowling lane were bigger, this would be possible. But, for the pin to be hit perfectly on its side, the bowling ball would be in the gutter. So no, it’s not possible.
8:15 The bowler converting the Greek Church still continues to aim for the 3, and not the 2. He gets both count and picks up the spare. Where the robot and drawings aim for the 2.
Robbie, great video. I'm in my early 70's. My Dad was a huge bowler and I was able to go to the lanes back in the 1950's to watch him bowl in leagues. I did set pins in Buffalo, NY (Grant Street Lanes - above Molin Taylor Motor Parts) in the early 60's but was clueless as to how the machines operated after the mid 60's. Really enjoyed your presentation. I have seen the 7-10 picked up as well as 'box-cars' split. Bowlers today are insane! Also, never knew 'Earl' existed but very cool indeed! TY!
I average around 220 in league and have been bowling for around ten years, now. I've made the 7-10 split once in my life, and that was in October of 2016. I've left the split probably around 150 times and I've only converted it once.
One time I literally was with my family and I got a 7-10 split and I just went for one of them. Apparently I hit the back end and it skyrocketed and knocked the other pin down. That was in a clutch round where I was losing 30 points down and won.
Wait, they say the greek church is made less often because people go for the 3 pins instead of the 2 for count yet you need to go for the 2 to get the split BUT the pro bowler literally makes the spare in this video by aiming at the 3 pins. 7-10 still harder.
There are 2 versions of the greek church for a right handed player. 2:3 and 3:2. If you get 2:3, you can go for count and spare in the same shot. If you get 3:2, you have to choose
It's case of being possible on either side, but the 2 pins is considered more likely to collect the whole spare. I'm no expert, so I can't explain the details, but that's the basics.
Easier to pick it up aiming for the 3 pins... aim to the outside edge of the front pin and the front pin deflects off the inside back pin over to the 2 set. I have about a 25% conversion rate on that split using this strat.
You can convert it both ways, going for the 2 or the 3. But physics-wise, it's higher chance of converting by going for the 2. Right-handed, we'd normally leave it 2 on the left, 3 on the right. The way to convert it by going for the 2 pins is basically going for the 4-9, but slightly thinner (think going between a 4-9 and 4-10), and hoping for some nice pin action. But aiming for the 3 on the right side, you don't have that back 8 pin to bounce things off, so you have to slide the 6 between the 4 and the 7, so your angle is even thinner. Basically the angles. Going for the 2 side, your angle needed to slide the pin across is greater than going for the 3 side.
Converting a whole church is an impossible feat, because they are set in their religious ways and no one in the congregation would go for it. I just saw your comment and realized the alternative meaning of that statement that has nothing to do with bowling. I didn't catch that hearing him saying it in the video.
I've only been bowling a couple dozen times. I hit this shot once and didn't realize how insane that is. I missed the 10 pin wide right completely, but the ball bounced back out of the gutter enough to cut the 10 pin straight across the lane into the 7
@bubblesburst1220 interesting I honestly did not know that hahaha. But I'll tell you what, the computers they had at the alley couldn't tell the difference, so I got the spare though 😜
@@callumdavies1093 only if the other factors are controlled. They aren't though, thus the robot can't reliably do a 7 - 10....but for real, I'm sure they could have picked up at least one if they stayed at tweaking the values a while longer.
Thank you for clarifying that case of the Greek Church. It would be rarer cause that formation is less common which is why it came up less on records In difficulty 7-10 takes it.
No It’s the conversion percentage for every time it appeared, so out of every frame that ever had a Greek church it was only converters 0.3% of the time
I like bowling but I don't like to do it. I'm left handed so the holes in the balls screw up my thumb since the holes are drilled for right handers. Being left handed it makes you move your thumb over your ring finger instead of your middle finger, and when the bowling ball comes off of your hand a few times it really makes your thumb start to hurt.
In tournament bowling-as a right-handed bowler-I would convert the 7-10 split by purposely throwing a gutterball to the left, releasing the ball without spin above the beginning of the right gutter and directing the ball to bounce hard against the side wall, ricochet off that and then bump the seven pin. You practice this on a throw-away game by just striking only this seven pin for ten frames. It's difficult to say whether this would qualify at the national level but I assure you that it was good enough for league play.
Its a rare condition that doesn’t allow you to control eye movements and in some people other random movements, i have it in my eyes, its common in people with ADHD
Same been bowling for almost 30 years, picked it 3 times... covered it twice out of league and once in league. Got me a patch for it. No skill was involved. 😂
In my 6 years of bowling I’ve had some 7-10 attempts that were almost successful. I’ve always wanted to convert it. But the greatest convert I’ve done was a 6 7 10 split. Being a lefty helped making me feel proud for converting a split that’s more advantageous to the right.
I've made the 7/10 split twice. Once was done with the bounce they show. The other was by tapping the right pin (10 pin) on the outside just as the ball was heading toward the gutter. It shot across the lane and took out the left pin (7 pin). But yes, most times I just get one or the other.
Use a light ball like a 6. Only put 2 finger tips in. Stand all the way to the left and throw it all the way cross lane to the right while lofting it high in the air with as much spin as possible so that the spin kicks in right as you hit the 10. Aim for the left side of the pin so the spin is going with the bounce off the 10 and hit the 7 with the ball.
ok, I’m no bowler, I like bowling though. I counter on that explanation at 3:02...I sent the ball hard and fast with major spin hook and just before it hit the 7, it dropped into the gutter, banked high to the left then came back to the right and hit the 7 perfectly, sliding it beautifully across the lane to knock down the 10. One of the long time watchers said with great joy, “I’ve never seen such a thing in my life!”
its how they are anchored best strategy is to barely clip inside of pin and kick it off the closest kick plate and bounce it back across the lane. I've made it twice using this method....fast, plastic ball and inside clip not bouncing it off back or in pit and then out of pit. Just my opinion
There was a dude who chucked a 10lb ball at 24mph next to me two nights ago, which caused the 7 pin to just launch it to the wall then ricochet to the other end of the lane into the 10 pin
All I can think about while watching this is the episode of Zack and Cody where in a thick accent they say “you can hit the 7 or you can hit the 10 but you can not hit them both”
Well it’s true... you can only hit one pin and hope to cause a ricochet. Also the abbreviated title is “Suite Life”-everyone knows that. ...Also I just watched that vid (thx lol) and it looks fake af 😂 ..why didn’t they just stand 10 feet away and film a “real” one? lmao
It's the hardest to pick up ACCORDING TO THE DATA. Because most of the time, bowlers go for the count instead of the fancy trick. Did you even finish the video?
And that, boys and girls, is a perfect example of why pure statistics in a vacuum are almost useless, and always require careful study and interpretation to understand the actual significance behind cold numbers.
He may have seen Mark Roth convert the 7-10 on national television on ABC Sports Professional Bowlers Tour back on January 5th, 1980 at Mel's Southshore Bowl in Alameda, CA?
I rarely get left with a 7-10 split but when it happens what I've started trying to do, and I need to actually just practice this more, is hook the ball in almost behind the 7 pin to kick it either directly into the side wall or a little forward and hope it has enough energy to come back across the deck and nail the 10. This method seems a little more reliable, if you can do it, than going straight at it and trying to get the pin to bounce off the curtain or something else in the pit. You also will have the sweep coming down in front of the deck so that is another thing that can help the 7 (or 10 for a southpaw) ricochet across the deck. Of course hooking a ball BEHIND the 7 or 10 pin would be a feat in and of itself. Happy bowling!

I had no idea why until years later lol
For anyone in the U.K it was at Bitterne Bowl in Southampton.
if the ball went in the gutter and popped out of the gutter and hit pins.. it's still considered a gutter. as cool as it might of been that you hit the 7 -10 split. technically in your case this wouldnt count in a game.. the score would be erased and a gutter would show.
@@firebird68cougar69 it’s still impressive though
When i was a kid my bowling coach spoke of another way to pick up a 7-10, he said you could hit the inside edge of either pin to send it outword toward the hard wall instead of the curtain and you had more of a chance to bounce the pin back across to hit the other pin. I never could do it, but i have seen him do it.
eric fortson I did something similar. I curved the ball into the gutter right before the pins. It hit the wall and bounced back into the lane hitting the 7 pin. The pin flew across hitting the 10 pin. I was honestly trying to do what your instructor said, but I put a little too much spin on the ball.
eric fortson you went to a bowling coach ?? I didn’t even know that existed
It doesn't surprise me that at least one person in the world got unusually good at them. Millions of people in decades.
At least one grandpa with a chip on his shoulder and some time to think and practice could do it.

50 weeks a year.
1000.
10 years like that and you can do it.
40 years like that and if you tried to game the math you ought to have gotten it at least 4 times.

Seems like you have to do one of two things to have any chance, especially with the newer curtains:
1) Instead of aiming for a glancing blow on the outside where you'll land in the gutter, you should aim for a glancing blow on the inside of either pin instead, which is even more achievable since you can use spin to curve it in, the idea being to bounce the pin hard into the wall on the side and causing it to ricochet back, all in order to avoid the pin hitting the curtain and losing its kinetic energy there.
2) Hit the pin straight on with a fast throw, the goal being to achieve a double bounce as mentioned in passing in the video, where the pin hits the ball a second time after colliding with the curtain, regaining kinetic energy and bouncing unpredictably in one of any number of directions.

Louis use a parachute, you didn’t say I couldn’t
How did it feel when you finally got it?
@@pippincovington1348 I smacked it out so hard, I almost couldn't throw the fill in the 10th LOLOL... and we needed it to win!
I've never made it since I bowl a 300 every game :p
@@MrOsmodeus I think the point is that banking off the curtain ensures that you pick up at least one pin where putting enough spin on the bowl and/or angling it to impact the side of the 7 or 10 pin carries a much higher risk of missing the pin entirely. That'd be the same as trying to get the ball to cut so hard that it goes into the gutter with enough speed to pop back out and catch a pin on its outer edge and likely a bunch of other crazy throws.

They forgot another method getting the 7 10 split, which im surprised they didnt mention. You can throw the ball hard into the gutter and hope it bounces back up into the side of a pin, which would slide it straight sideways into the other.
i think they didnt mention that because its technically illegal in bowling

TY!

One time I literally was with my family and I got a 7-10 split and I just went for one of them. Apparently I hit the back end and it skyrocketed and knocked the other pin down. That was in a clutch round where I was losing 30 points down and won.
With the combined power the of the Wii Remote and the Wii Motion Plus, this shot is almost impossible to miss.
2-8-10 is the hardest of em all though
9:13 lmao “tried converting the Greek church”
Converting a whole church is an impossible feat, because they are set in their religious ways and no one in the congregation would go for it.

I've made the 7/10 split twice. Once was done with the bounce they show. The other was by tapping the right pin (10 pin) on the outside just as the ball was heading toward the gutter. It shot across the lane and took out the left pin (7 pin). But yes, most times I just get one or the other.

I remember a person in a nearby church who looked like he was Greek trying to convert me. I bounced.
Are you sure he wasn’t watching his buddy’s behind?
What if someone told you that you can't leave the bowling alley until you pick up the 7 - 10 split
I run inside the 7-10 split and I kick both like Cristiano Ronaldo
Twilight Zone episode...
@Marshadow Pokemon: I think, at that point, I would have to change my name to Sisyphus.
Roll a barbell down the gutters. 😂

Eggø Waffles yep belmonte
Reuben Gilbert does a 7 10 split across 5 lanes
Robbie Gonzalez is for sure an up and comping journalist. This was very well done and yes, the Greek Church is a really hard shot in bowling. 7-10? Hammer it down at one of them.
I did this once when I was 17 and me and my friends went nuts
cool
Sure thing
hahaha i could imagine how hyped everyone was
